This was great. I did a 10 minute ball point sketch and was shocked at how it turned out. Fun to relax and keep expectations low.

Spiritually very inspiring, it shows that no matter the level we are, we all go through those moments and ... most artists are afraid to demonstrate this fragile side of creation. Délicieux merci Maestro.

Thank you for your honest and helpful thoughts on art block - as a elderly beginner with doubts, hopes and expectations - you are just what I needed Josh to help me on my path again.
Oh, by the way, beautiful drawing you have just drawn.
    Thank you so much .

Im a watercolorist mostly (as a hobby only) anyway my dad passed last year and I thought I had all his things mostly but my step mom found and old box of drawing supplies, In it were those charcoal sticks you use. I took them having no idea what I was gonna do w them. Obviously I know they're for drawing but not for me. Until I saw YOUR SHORTS TODAY! Btw it was TODAY that I received them...I think my dad pushed you through my algorithm..lol...You are an amazing artist and your portraits are hauntingly GORGEOUS! You make it look easy but I know it isn't. But I'm looking forward to trying the crumbling up the stick and smearing it on the paper and go from there technique...thank you so much for sharing your talent with us, New subscriber here! Sorry off topic today...

Sorry about your father's passing. Hope you're doing better. But yeah, charcoal is very versatile. There is also vine or willo charcoal which is easier to work with in my opinion but it smodges more. Also, there's different approaches. I've seen a Spanish guy on RUclips, Gerard millet, draw beautiful portraits with charcoal while blending with a brush. But he works ìn lines and more in academic style. I've tried like 4 approaches

I just finished reading The Artist Say by Julia Cameron and it’s all about overcoming art blocks. Basically by writing three morning pages daily and going on an artist date weekly you can free your creativity. I just finished the book and have made some beautiful pieces. Don’t be afraid to make bad art! Just keep creating more and the good stuff will come.

Apart from the fact that I really like your work, what you said about switching up your go-to style is really important. I like drawing faces, but because I do the same thing a lot, I get bored. Everything's repetitive and I don't like my work. I love your pencil, pen, and charcoal work. But what's also really interesting is when you paint part of a face. Clearly, using values is critical. The way you illustrate what you do shows values more than anyone else I've watched. You create out of chaos. That not only brings your work motion and depth, but it illustrates values. Thank you!

I have a little notebook labeled art ideas. I list ideas in it and then misplaced the book for awhile. Found it! And realized several of the ideas in it I had accomplished while the book was lost,
You will definitely get artblock by playing too much Candy Crush. Been there, done that.
Thrifted art materials inspire me to just go for it and if I totally mess up a charcoal it doesn't matter. I'm in the practicing stage. I scored a pile of vintage Charcoal and pastel papers and am having a blast creating.
There is no way I would use 300# CP watercolor paper for an ink drawing but maybe someday I'll reach the confidence to go for it,
Walking Every day helps energize and get the creative juices flowing.
Most of my charcoal drawings are tacked up on the walls of my garage. They remind me to keep drawing. My poor kids will think I've gone off the deep end and they will enjoy taking down Mom's drawings when they settle my estate.
Thank you Josh. Tomorrow is my all day art day. Can't wait!!!!!

As usual, your video was very informative and gave excellent advice. I'm a self taught artist and definitely have days when i'm struggling with motivation.
I find inspiration helps a lot. I visit art galleries in London frequently and always come away buzzing with ideas and wanting to try something new. Also I have joined a local art group where we have a tutor who specifically gets us to try a range of different mediums; biro, inks, coloured pencils, acrylics. It takes me outside my comfort zone but really helps to push myself past the fear of failure.
Thank you so much for your RUclips tutorials.

But I have one more question. My ink pens dry out quickly and the refill dents quite often and then I have to keep buying new ones. Do you have an idea how I can protect them better?
    Greets Ric 🖤

Having the note taking available on my phone has been an awesome way to grab and save my inspiration ideas before they're forgotten. I've tried to keep a paper notebook, and at times I do carry one. But realistically, this phone is always with me. Where a pad and pencil is not.

I notice in this drawing you made her pupils smaller, she has very large pupils in the reference and I was impressed with this artistic decision as in my drawing the big pupils look wierd. I guess your decision was an intuitive one, ie you've done this enough to know her pupils were going to look wierd if you did them like the reference but if you have more to say on this I would like to hear it . . .

  • @jorgehumbertoescatelmontal9896

Good Drawing. . . but is not your Object. The Girl in the Photo Looks Right in Front of the Observer. Her Nose is Larger than your Drawing. Your Drawing Shows an Eye Lower than the other... And the Harmony, the Proportion, the Shape of the Elements that Conforms an All? Here, More Speach with Less Observation and Obvious Result, A Portrait wich not Necesary makes a goog Homage to the Person in the Photo... This, For Any with Clear and Sanelly Observation. I Enjoy your Drawings, but with reference, don't reach ( Aparently ) the Real Justice for the Model.
