Amazing how long a good pair of shoes can last. You can see the amount of craftmanship from Corthay that went into making this pair. Lovely patina as well!
To me this is the most beautiful aspect of the sartorial lifestyle. Developing a deep relationship with the garments you own. They accompany you throughout your life and you almost become one with them. And the enjoyment of something as "simple as a shoe" will last for years and years on end. Thank you Hugo for teaching me this!
I agree it teaches you to be more interested and intentional with your choices making the quality of life richer in my opinion. I specifically started with my passion watches my time pieces are ten years old and look new held there value and just make looking at the time a joy.
Thank you Hugo for continuing to educate us. I’m am almost 60 and enjoying my Satorial journey thanks to a lot of what I learn from you and Sonya and your guest. I am definitely purchasing your book(s). Cheers from Canada 🥂
Ah, the Corthay! I was at the London Trunk show for shoe patina and shoes makers and saw the Corthay stand. Some beautiful double monks in a blue patina there - super! Good job fellas. Tony
First of all.. great suggestion before write the comment...nice touch... And now my comment. Ladies and gentlemen...these are proper shoes...and proper use.... Thank you Hugo for this important lesson... Baci e abbracci a Sonya
Hugo, I had the pleasure of visiting the Corthay store in Paris last month. What a cool set up. The entry to the store is through the room the patina is applied. I already have a couple of their shoes and since the ready to wear its me well, I opted for the same ready to wear wingtip shoes. As you know the shoes initially have no patina applied to them. The process and experience of choosing the color and patina is… delicious. Sonny and Tom have been fantastic. They are making some final adjustments. I should have them in my possession by early June. Look forward to see how your pair of shoes look after the gents apply their magic. Cheers!
It's interesting juxtaposition of culture and mentality between humanist Frenchman and Christian Southern Tennessean. All shared the passion of shoemaking and shoes in general. I was pleasantly surprised to see them together.
This shows if you purchase high quality shoes and take care of them they can last a lifetime. I have Churches shoes that are 40 years old and look like new.
I have one "issue" when the investment argument is thrown around. Mathematically you're right, it's equivalent to 150€ a year and that's not bad for this quality. But realistically someone that buys at this level and appreciate the quality will not have only 1pair (it's a good start though). But I agree, on the long run you amortise it a lot better and you look 10x better in the meantime!
You're right my friend. This calculation was just for the sake of explaining how money is quickly forgotten when quality remains. As you can imagine, I own a lot of shoes. I probably wore this pair 35 times per year (on average). That means around 350/400 wears. Cheers, Hugo
I've had my lie de vin Arcas for almost six years and the uppers still look nearly new. I had to have it resoled once by Corthay and the cost was very reasonable...about $120 for rubber sole replacement and metal taps.
Hi Hugo. I’m absolutely with you about the quality of a good pair of shoes and they really last long and still look fine. I must always laugh when young girls and guys here around me talk about their “cool” shoes and brands (trainers) and how good they are… one year later these killer shoes go to the trash. 😂😂😂😂 (I don’t want to say company names, but I think you know what I mean)
I would love to buy a pair of brogues. They not only have to get better with age but also be able to change the gears on my 1998 Yamaha Fazer without falling apart.
@@SARTORIALTALKS I found a great pair of brogues at Trickers but unfortunately the ones I tried on slipped a bit at the heel so I will probably go back and try on another pair. Hopefully they fit perfectly.
It is important to know how many times you wear the shoes weekly. I have some shoes I wear once in a while and the are in my closet for more than 20 years, still looking good
Great to have shoes that last ! With favorite shoes, try to alternate wear at least every other day, so they can rest and dry out with a pair of shoe horns for 24 hours or more. Cheers ! Hugo
I have been thinking about Jean Cocteau recently in terms of his artistic exploits (as a designer) outside poetry or any form of literature and as well, in terms of his style and it is strange i would look at a beautiful pair of shoes and think about all that 😂😂😂😁, i don't know why. It is just strange given there isn't necessarily a connection but maybe it is at the level of the creating aspect. As the bootmaker creates so did Cocteau create images and maybe concepts. Again, there isn't necessarily any connection 😁😁😁😂😂, i just don't know why recently i think of him when i see a fine pair of shoes. Besides, thank you for this video. Cheers dear Hugo
Very nice. I have a number of Church's shoes purchased over the years. Great shoes are wonderful to own. One thing to mention Hugo, no one buys just one pair of shoes. We rotate them between wearings.
We tried one on shoes and are still trying to gauge the interest. Many of the concepts here on tailoring apply to women as well. Thanks Penny for your interest and for watching, much appreciated. Hugo
11 years is nothing..if you rotate 2-3 pairs of quality shoes, easily 30-40 years or more with daily wear. I have JM Weston RM Williams shoes bought 20 years ago, and they're great condition. Of course these are several rungs below Corthay!
Lovely shoes. But it needs to be said that you do not need to spend 1500 to have shoes last that long. Any goodyear welted decently made shoe can last that long if you mind them, even (relatively) budget brands like Barker.

iv had church grenson trickers just afew to mention for over 30 years but i find it hard to believe that these have been wore alot for 11 years and never resoled , sorry dont get it . you cant buy better than english church and they need a resole befor 11years of hard wearing
Dear Timothy, you're right I didn't wear this pair very often, but the quality of Corthay's shoes are, by all means, comparable to the best of English shoes (like Edward Green or C&J). Cheers, Hugo
I saw the guy in green t-shirt touched the shoes sole and then he touched his lips. That is a beautiful shoes but he must have treated it as just shoes.
Dear sir, this is not nationalism. I'm just proud of the fact that the French Guilde '"les Compagnons du Devoir" is the only guilde of craftsmen in the world who is still training (for free, because education is free in France) aspiring craftsmen in many fields (including bespoke shoemaking). Cheers, Hugo
The French have an admirable tradition in both shoes and supporting their craftsmen, I’m British but I own JM Weston, Corthay and Aubercy shoes, they are all exceptionally well made although expensive. I also have a pair of John Lobb ‘Williams’ RTW who are owned by the French Hermes group but made in Northampton. The French have always admired British shoes, Hugo himself says that he has had both Churches and JM Westons from when he was young as he liked both styles . I see them as a sort of halfway house between British ‘elegant, stylish and understated’ and Italian ‘flair, beauty and flashiness’, which is probably why half of my shoes are French, they have a subtlety that seems to appeal to me.
Amazing how long a good pair of shoes can last. You can see the amount of craftmanship from Corthay that went into making this pair. Lovely patina as well!

this sickly old-fashioned nationalism makes no sense when French shoes have nothing more to say in today's world of handmade than in other countries.
