And yes the smell of new shoes is amazing for me and I'm also addicted to the window shopping of shoes...Many times I visit shoe shops just to get the scent of new shoes an the feel of soft shining leather.
The Gingko was my first pair of upscale shoes/boots as well. The same color as shown here except with canvas collar as opposed to suede. I purchased them around '97-ish in NYC. I've worn them through many New England winters and this year I will send them to be resoled. The condition of the uppers you say? Perfect patina because of annual Saphir moisturizer and chestnut cream from time to time. Hugo is 100% right when he notes they are "indestructible".
Thank you Sir for sharing your stories. I sense a lot of passion as well as humility. Our generation took a long time to acquire such beautiful and luxurious products and we certainly worked very hard to have enough savings.
Dear Hugo, as a 50 yrs old lady, I have found so much pleasure in watching your videos, I've just found you at 4.30am in the UK as I listen to the rain against the window and I need to get up at 6am for work. I love your elegant style and find there is so much elegance in a man wearing a beautifully cut suit and beautiful Brogues. I have previously bought mens shoes for myself in a size 6 (40) and I love them. However, I shall now search for some bespoke Brogues to wear. Much love and kind wishes.. Thank you, I have found inspiration today. Julie x

Many thanks Hassan ! The suit is a bespoke double-breasted by Sartoria Manna in Napoli, the shirt is a bespoke shirt by Marol in Bologna with a fabulous Soyella Royal (240/2) cotton fabric by Alumo and the tie is an old heavy silk tie by Marc Guyot in Paris. Best! Hugo

As an Englishman living in France , I’m always pleased when one of your countrymen comments, favourably on the shoes I’m wearing. I was born in Kettering, and had family in the shoe industry so was brought up to appreciate good footwear. Just like yourself, I bought my first decent pair of r t w shoes in the late 80s.I too opted for the Church’s tan Grafton Bookbinder brogue on the 73 last.In my eyes the most beautiful shoe ,which also ages gracefully. As a footnote ( no pun intended) I was very disappointed when Church’s was bought out by a fashion house and to cut costs now only produces the Grafton on the 100 last !
Dear Shaun, thank you so much for your contribution. Oddly enough, when I was a teenager my school had an exchange agreement with Kettering... So the first trip of my life outside France was in Kettering when I was 14 years old! I also visited the magnificent factory of Gaziano & Girling in this town a few years ago. I agree with you concerning Church's. Prada buying Church's seemed so bizarre, almost counter natural... Cheers, Hugo
KlaasDeKaasBaas Try eBay. The first Goodyear welted shoes I got was a pair of black chukka boots by Sanders and they cost me £65. They were freshly refurbished and resoled by Sanders so they look practically new. A new pair would have cost me over £200.
I would say goodyear welted fullgrain shoes, like Loake 1888 in the $300 range is well spent money. I would go with chuckas and boats, rubber sole brown.
Rewatching this episode again, having enjoyed it so much the first time. So nice to notice the readjustment of Hugo's pocket square part way through. Having just started to venture out in a jacket with square, I found myself quite paranoid about it slipping back into my pocket, and constantly wanting to pull it back out!
Love that “licking the window “ I have done that when looking at a rock and roll display of 1960’s drums, guitars and amps. I must have been 6 years old! Very impressive shoe collection can’t wait to see the next part. About 2-3 years ago I started my journey learning about classic men’s style. I first heard about over the calf -thin socks. They were from a company called Fort Belvedere and were about $40 which was 10 times what I was used to spending. Took a while to step up on the socks. Please show us what you favorite socks are,
Fort Belvedere is the brand of Gentleman's Gazette. My favorite sock's brand is Bresciani in Italy. They are distributed by Mes Chaussettes Rouges (www.meschaussettesrouges.com/en/). Cheers, Hugo
One of the most well Dressed , well spoken, well versed, well read and a very enterprising Gentleman i have ever seen in RUclips would be gem of a time talking to him about custom shoes..I am from India Cheers God Bless
Never have I watched a more interesting Shoe video and on Men’s Shoes but this was so much more. 🤔 I was absolutely inspired to earn one or more these shoes or their brothers. As well inspired to have better shoes. I was able to get some understanding of refined upper tier quality Menswear Shoes I’ve no knowledge of and their styling. I’ve been introduced and a great video.
Fun to hear you have sold your shoes to buy up, I have done the same many times. I've owned the 677 chases JM Weston (bought on eBay for $175 a few years ago) were too large and sold for a profit.
I like how you talk about feeling invincible wearing great shoes, and I couldn't agree more, and keeping those great shoes looking great is an art itself, my leather shoes would be incomplete without a mirror shine.
Hello. New to your channel and totally captivated by your content and dulcet tones. Just starting my collection, and I suppose I shouldn't be surprised it is possibly more difficult to transform at 52. Always obsessed with beautiful clothes, but until now, never in a position to invest. Thank you for imparting the courage to admit that, as a child, I even slept in my new football boots! And thank you for your inspiration. Please continue.
3:57 I exactly understand I still have shoes that I only wore indoors just not to damage the sole 😂😂. If it is raining or going to rain only certain shoes are the ones to wear.
Hugo your story on the Berluti shoes are inspiring and how 20 years from now u have such a collection! I walked into the Sydney Berluti store a couple of weeks back and tried on the Andy loafers and ever since that moment I have been consistently thinking about them. Now in the process of saving up to get a pair since cost wise they are such a big jump up from the shoes I usually wear aka C&J, George Cleverly and Alden. Keep producing your videos your content is amazing!
Wowowowoww! I have officially been schooled. I loved the look of every single pair you mentioned. And even worse, what am I now without a pair of Corthays, or even the Gaziano & Girling's Deco?? Hahaa! And that monk strap Jouvette, the first ever monk straps I actually liked because of the single buckle! Thank you sooo much for sharing this. Bonne chance!
I managed to find a pair of Corthay Wilfred at an outlet back in 2015. It was like finding gold! I’m still blown away by it’s beauty. I have only ever worn it twice so far because it’s like wearing art, don’t want to ruin them
I really enjoy watching your episodes, I always save them for Saturday afternoon and relax watching them with a hot coffee and a cigar. I thought I was the only one obsessed about not damaging the soles 😄. What I do is always take new shoes to a cobbler and add thin vibram inserts on the sole. Not a very elegant solution but to my eyes neither is a scuffed and damaged leather sole. Plus I never have to resole them at usually big costs, when the insert gets damaged I simply replace it
I don" know what it is about shoes but they are something to covet. I remember being young and going to shoe stores and trying on shoes without having enough to buy them. Can't wait for part 2. One other thing love the collar on your shirt hard find long collar shirts
What shoe styles and brands would you recommend for casual wear, going to the beach, on weekends, etc.? I have been considering a slipper style such as the loafer, or boat shoes, though from what I’ve seen boat shoes seem a little gimmicky. I recently spent three weeks in Italy and slipper style shoes are very popular there. In fact, I bought my first pair of casual leather shoes while in Florence, and ever since I have become quite interested in quality, stylish clothing. Your videos have most definitely helped me understand the technicalities of the world of men’s fashion and inspired me to research which styles I am fond of. On a side note, are there any good shoe and suit manufacturers that you know of based out of Australia? Most I have seen are based out of Europe and shipping costs are often very high.
Dear Barnabas, Australia is indeed quite far and the local production is not very developed (to say the least). For casual style I would recommend "Belgian Loafers", very casual but chic at the same time. Companies like Velasca (shoes) or Spier & Mackay (affordable ready-to-wear suits and jackets) do ship to Australia. Best, Hugo
SARTORIAL TALKS Thank you for your reply! I have just realised that I wrote Oxford in my original comment as opposed to Loafer. As for the Belgian Loafers you have recommended, they are a style that I have not seen before and I really appreciate the clean lines. I will definitely take a look at them in more detail. Thank you greatly for your manufacturer recommendations as well. You mentioned Spier and Mackay in your value suit brand video, and I have had a positive impression from their website, and I will research Velasca more. I wish you all the best. - Barnabas

J ai vraiment adoré le vidéo et les histoires personnelles. Continuez votre travail exceptionnel!! Moi aussi j ai eu la piqûre de collectionneur de souliers 😁.
I love the passion with which you talk about clothes and shoes, Hugo. It is also a very human story about starting at a lower budget and trying to progress further up the quality ladder. Do you use autocue when you narrate your videos?
Great collection so far! My grail and first one was also Berluti Alessandro. I think there are now maybe four different Alessandros out there. I chose Alessandro Eclair because they were only ones with gooldyear welt. They are beautiful shoes. My next ones may be Crockett and Jones or Gazziano Girlings.
An interesting point you make regarding black shoes, I recently wrote a little piece on my site about it - though talking about the wardrobes of young men in particular - and came to the same conclusion: you can get by without a pair of black shoes for a long time. This month I purchased my first pair of decent black shoes (Cheaney brogues), and they were something like my 10th leather shoe purchase. Great video as always, Hugo.
Thanks Hugo. I wish I could enjoy Corthay, Weston, and Berluti but my feet are too big! A video on Sonya's shoe/suit collection would also be much appreciated.
Have you looked at Heinrich Dinkelacker? That's in the €600-800 range. Then there's Tallsem in the €80-140 range. Yes, you read that right. Great beaters - well polished they look better than 99% of sloppy men's footwear anyway. Tallsem/Nelson last has high instep and roomy toebox. Spain only, but you can always send them an email. They're nice people.
Very, very interesting indeed thank you Hugo, and delivered with such passion! If you're an aspiring shoe lover like me, I reckon this video will make you think long and hard about the state of your own shoe collection as you ponder a few new acquisitions I suspect?!
I just ordered some Di Bianco V-Front plain-toe bluchers in black with a waisted rubber sole. Basically, stylish sensible shoes. I learned about V-fronts from this video. 🙂
Great collection Hugo! I'm surprised it took you a long time until your first proper black shoes, I thought it would be one of the first two! But I guess in a way it also makes sense, I guess you would want to wait until you see the most proper one. I prefer shoes without brogues but I recently got one and they have been rather enjoyable to wear. Anyway, thanks for another great video, cheer! - Han
So the low (far) wing tip of the shoe has elongating effect similar to low vamp in ladies shoe? Chic, discreet but at the same time with strong personality - it resonates strongly with my style goals. Hugo, would you be so kind to please write in French that expression that translates as window licking? Thank you.
Just bought my first Corthay last week from Degand in Brussels ... called Arca Boucle ... what I don´t understand is where they differ with the Corthay Jouvette, as you mentioned and showed them in your collection ... at least on the picture they look very much alike ... even the gradient looks similar, apart from the fact that mine are black-bordeaux coloured ... ?
Something completely unexpected and very nice just happened to me. I went to a store for a tin of Saphir wax in black. Scatterbrain that I am, completely forgot, bought pigmented renovateur spray and Super invulner for my suede shoes instead. Then spotted a pair of Carminas on sale, tried them on, found the last a bit to narrow, and started chatting with the enthusiastic young salesman about the joys of shoes and well made things in general. Then it turned out he had my size in Edward Green Chelsea on sale, 50% off the price from a few years back. Shoes I expected to always want, but never own. And then when I got home, determined to start wearing them in immediately, I couldn't help thinking of you. I seriously considered cleaning the floors before putting them on...
Hi, A hand welted shoe indeed is often "Goodyear welted" -- done entirely by hand. Many shoe lovers crave hand welted shoes. More commonly, Goodyear welting is done with a bench made machine (some of these machines are considered antiques because they continue to work well). So, we are talking about Goodyear welting either done by hand or machine. Cheers, Sonya
I've got a pair of Berluti but hardly wear them they are chic and well made but somehow not for me. I only like English type of shoes really Crockett & Jones and Edward Green. Nice collection though thanks for sharing and looking forward to part 2.
I'm at the Alan Edmond's level now. Next shoes will be Cobble Union and then who knows. Maybe some day some nice made to measure shoes. Thanks for sharing.
Dear Asher, we will launch this week-end a special campaign with Cobbler Union (with a % discount + Free shoe trees + Free shipping). Send us an email at hugo@parisiangentleman.fr and we'll send you the code to benefit from this campaign. Cheers, Hugo
Salut Hugo! I'd like to ask your opinion on the Suitmaker DanielRE. I don't know if you know them. But what is your first impression? I've seen that they have nice wide lapels etc.. Thank you and Cheers. Alessandro
Hey Alessandro, Daniel whatever his name is not a suit maker, but an Instgramer. The photos are ok but I have no idea if this is what you get when you buy. Best, Hugo
Please Hugo! I am 6'5 and 320lbs. My pants are 44x36 where can I turn for an affordable, classic style, off-the-rack suit? No one makes pleats anymore. No lapel 🥶
Dear friend, I think you are the perfect client for Made-to-Measure. Drop us a note at hugo@parisiangentleman.fr and we'll do our best to help you find the right maker depending on where you live. Cheers, Hugo
I got a good made to measure suit from Oliver Wicks. They do pleats. Affordable is a relative term though. I have also found good deals on second hand suits on ebay. If you know your measurements and have a good tailor, that can be a good way to get a quality well fitting suit affordably. It takes some investment of time though. Make sure the jacket shoulders fit and its the correct length of jacket. Trousers can be taken in or let out a bit and the legs shortened. Good luck.

Is it a bad thing, that as a 22 year old student who's very into dress shoes but can't afford all these brands here; I have 10 pairs but they are all at a just meermin,Allen Edmonds, loake etc.?
Dear Maestro your collection is truly magnifique. As a small boy myself I would watch movies in possibly the era of The Count Of Monte Cristo the fashion and style I loved and the style of the Kings guard Cavaliers their flare. BUT the high boots and,..... are you ready, the buckle but two buckle always intrigued me. Never before today have I been bold enough to confess this desire to wear a boot with two buckles with a raised heel but in burgundy with a flare of dark colour. Forgive me please for talking about myself but I have kept this secret for sixty years. (I am 63 now)
wow fabulous story sir i also had this habit sleep with my shoes in my childhood because i love my shoes now i have a three pair of shoes cap toe oxford, penny loafer, tassel loafer and i always like to wear loafers because of our Indian weather condition
I love listening to stories like this; told by someone who has already walked the journey....I am still young; but was fortunate to purchase my first pair of Cheaney shoes (UK)...and oh my...have they set a new bar for me!
Thank you Hugo, you reminded me of my young days licking the windows myself and sleeping with my shoes on. Although it is not very different now... ;-)

Are you South African?
Rewatching this episode again, having enjoyed it so much the first time. So nice to notice the readjustment of Hugo's pocket square part way through. Having just started to venture out in a jacket with square, I found myself quite paranoid about it slipping back into my pocket, and constantly wanting to pull it back out!
😂 I can relate that John ! But after all it's a small gesture to pull it up! Best, Hugo
Hugo, I would love to see a video which shows all of your shoes in close up and also paired with an outfit. Keep up the good work...
One of the most well Dressed , well spoken, well versed, well read and a very enterprising Gentleman i have ever seen in RUclips
would be gem of a time talking to him about custom shoes..I am from India
Cheers
God Bless
Never have I watched a more interesting Shoe video and on Men’s Shoes but this was so much more. 🤔 I was absolutely inspired to earn one or more these shoes or their brothers. As well inspired to have better shoes. I was able to get some understanding of refined upper tier quality Menswear Shoes I’ve no knowledge of and their styling. I’ve been introduced and a great video.
Love this approach to life - makes so much sense !
Fun to hear you have sold your shoes to buy up, I have done the same many times. I've owned the 677 chases JM Weston (bought on eBay for $175 a few years ago) were too large and sold for a profit.
JM Weston is always a safe buy for sure my friend ! Hugo
you look so excited remembering your past.. that´s very nice
I never thought about that. But I'm also very excited about my present and even more about my future ! Cheers, Hugo
Absolutely stunning shoes! Thank you for such a wonderful representation of works of art!
Im in love with the classical music you have chosen Hugo!
Many thanks my friend. And by the way, C&J, GC and Alden are all great shoes ! Best, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS Yes they indeed are Hugo but sometimes the heart really wants a beautiful patina loafer ahahahha
I have only ever worn it twice so far because it’s like wearing art, don’t want to ruin them
Ha. Just discovered this channel and Hugo as well. I like this guy, he's got a lot of class. Great storyteller.
Plus I never have to resole them at usually big costs, when the insert gets damaged I simply replace it
That's indeed an excellent solution Vali. Very efficient. Cheers, Hugo
I don" know what it is about shoes but they are something to covet. I remember being young and going to shoe stores and trying on shoes without having enough to buy them. Can't wait for part 2. One other thing love the collar on your shirt hard find long collar shirts
Thank you Paul. My collar is a long point pin collar by Marol in Bologna. Best! Hugo
Hugo - what colour and patina is your Corthay Arca? Truly stunning!
I believe they call this "crème brulée". Cheers, Hugo
- Barnabas

As expected 100% quality content. I truly enjoy your channel. Godspeed my friends,,,
Thank you very much Randy! Blessings, Hugo
J ai vraiment adoré le vidéo et les histoires personnelles. Continuez votre travail exceptionnel!! Moi aussi j ai eu la piqûre de collectionneur de souliers 😁.
Merci mon ami ! Hugo
I love the passion with which you talk about clothes and shoes, Hugo. It is also a very human story about starting at a lower budget and trying to progress further up the quality ladder. Do you use autocue when you narrate your videos?
No I don't Russ. Nothing's written. Just the list of the shoes. Cheers! Hugo
SARTORIAL TALKS Well I’m extremely impressed, Hugo. If you are doing that fascinating presentation without any prompts, that is true passion!
C&J are great, G&G are fabulous. Tough choice, but personally I would go for G&G. Best, Hugo
Actually I think Weston offers different widths on all its models. All the best, Hugo
Such a pity you did not have the shoes with you to show us.
Dear Colin, I agree with you but we shoot sartorial talks in the USA and my shoe collection is in France, unfortunately. Best! Hugo
Thank you
Hugo, thank you for turning me onto carlos santos. Super happy with the dress shoes i got.
I'm glad to read this Corey! Best, Hugo
the spoiling of sole of shoes is true in my case also. also the uppers of the shoes get the same attention.. totally agree . .
😂 I'm happy to read I'm not alone with this little obsession! Cheers, Hugo
I just ordered some Di Bianco V-Front plain-toe bluchers in black with a waisted rubber sole. Basically, stylish sensible shoes.
I learned about V-fronts from this video. 🙂
Scarpe Di Bianco are good shoes. We know the founder. Cheers, Hugo
Really enjoy your content, Hugo! Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much Cameron ! Hugo
Thank you, thank you, thank you Hugo!
Good to know I'm not alone in feeling a cringe as I wear new shoes outside the first time.
Haha, you are not alone for sure ! Hugo
- Han
Dear Han, I discovered quite quickly that dark brown shoes were in fact much more versatile than black shoes. Best, Hugo
First like! Love your channel Hugo! You and Sonya continually renew my passion for menswear and sartorial elegance :D
Thank you my friend, we appreciate! Sonya and Hugo
Hugo, you never cease to make me want to 'up my game' thank you for another glimpse behind the curtain, I await the next one with bated breath.
So the low (far) wing tip of the shoe has elongating effect similar to low vamp in ladies shoe? Chic, discreet but at the same time with strong personality - it resonates strongly with my style goals. Hugo, would you be so kind to please write in French that expression that translates as window licking? Thank you.
Well "window licking" translates in French like this : "Faire du lèche vitrine". Bien cordialement à vous, Hugo
The difference is very subtle. The quarters are straight on the Arca and pointed on the Jouvette. Cheers, Hugo
I too prefer single buckle monk strap shoes! Also happened to be my 1st pair of goodyear welted shoes
Thanks Jack, I'm with you on this. Hugo
After watching somebody talk so passionately about shoes I have a strong urge to go out and buy a pair!
Haha, take your time my friend. Dreaming is sometimes much more enjoyable than having. Cheers, Hugo
Wow. I love everything about your outfit here!
Great video. Would be interested to see your shining / maintenance routine for all of these
Dear Ross, the best channel for shoe maintenance / shining is Kirby Allison's channel. Cheers! Hugo
Fantastic video as usual. I look forward to the day I can pass my George Cleverleys on to my grandchildren!
What do you think about Silvano lattanzi / bontoni / Paolo scafora bespoke / mtm . Thx for any input :)
I mean in comparison
SL, too expensive (and too show off for my taste). Bontoni is great and Scafora also (especially the Norwegian stitched models). Best, Hugo
Hi Sonya. Could you explain the different between goodyear welted and hand welted. Thanks
Love the suit, big fan of wide peak lapels and the fabric choice!
Thank you Parker. Hugo
yes, nice colour combination today
I've got a pair of Berluti but hardly wear them they are chic and well made but somehow not for me. I only like English type of shoes really Crockett & Jones and Edward Green. Nice collection though thanks for sharing and looking forward to part 2.
WOW I LOVE ALL OF YOUR FIRST 10 PAIR OF SHOES
I love the Scaforas!
Honestly, I've been wearing my Scaforas more than any other pair of my collection. Best, Hugo
Until I saw the Fantomas, I didn't get the idea of sleeping with shoes 😂..
Haha, you're very funny. Cheers, Hugo
Wonderful shoe collection!
Many thanks Manny. Cheers, Hugo
I'm at the Alan Edmond's level now. Next shoes will be Cobble Union and then who knows. Maybe some day some nice made to measure shoes. Thanks for sharing.

Good luck.

@@aquanaute17 Avec plaisir. Hugo
what do you think of paul parkman and maglieriapelle?
Dear Brian, Paul Parkman are nice but a little too "flashy" for my taste. I have no experience with Maglieriapelle (from Istanbul). Cheers, Hugo
Hi Mr.Jacomet would be interested to know your opinion on Men's Louboutin 's RTW dress shoe line.
Regards
Way overpriced and tacky for my personal taste. Marketing brainwashing my friend. You can get so much better for half of the price. Hugo
Is it a bad thing, that as a 22 year old student who's very into dress shoes but can't afford all these brands here; I have 10 pairs but they are all at a just meermin,Allen Edmonds, loake etc.?
Great ...simply great content Hugo.... Merci.
Many thanks Eyad! Hugo
This Fine Man is an inspiration from what I thought was a bygone era. This class Act proved me wrong and I am now a better Man for it.
Many thanks John ! Cheers, Hugo
(I am 63 now)
Dear friend, you "secret" is a wonderful project. You should go for it ! Let us know ok ? Cheers, Hugo & Sonya
Very good patina. Especially for the burgundys
Merci Luis ! Hugo
wow fabulous story sir i also had this habit sleep with my shoes in my childhood because i love my shoes now i have a three pair of shoes cap toe oxford, penny loafer, tassel loafer and i always like to wear loafers because of our Indian weather condition
Haha, I now discover I'm not the only one who did sleep with his shoes! Best, Hugo
What an extraordinary jacket. Love it
I love listening to stories like this; told by someone who has already walked the journey....I am still young; but was fortunate to purchase my first pair of Cheaney shoes (UK)...and oh my...have they set a new bar for me!
Thank you Hugo, you reminded me of my young days licking the windows myself and sleeping with my shoes on. Although it is not very different now... ;-)
Haha, it's not very different with me neither :-) Hugo
;-) I knew it!
Definitely #8 Gazziano & Girling Deco lovely.
What about comfort? I know the style it's the decision maker but how comfy they are? Thanks you for such a great video Hugo
Dear Yak, all these shoes are extremely comfortable after a little break-in time of about 24 hours of wear. Cheers, Hugo
Impecable como siempre, Sr. Hugo. Saludos desde Perú.
Many thanks Daniel! Greetings from France. Hugo
Good on you for going with purple for one of those pairs :D.
