Bear Visits My Campsite - Descend on Lost Sierra

- A bear visited my campsite a few mornings in a row. So I thought it best to move on.
I was camped out near highway 89 in the eastern Sierra when a bear came through my campsite one morning. Surprisedly, it came back the next morning so I thought it was best to move campsites.
I was hanging out waiting for Descend on Lost Sierra to start the very next weekend. I wanted to stay fairly close to Reno so I could get a haircut and do some shopping prior to Descend.
Well, I'm not so good at filming other people and events but I tried to capture just a little of what happens at Descend. Such a wonderful weekend with cool people. Looking forward to Descend on Bend!

What a great video! I like the contrast of being alone with a bothersome bear to joining a large group of people having fun. You did a wonderful job of showing all the different activities involved with the Descend experience. It’s always fun to be with people who know how to have a good time. Thanks for sharing.
That was clever, honking the horn. Glad he wasn't threatening but it is always best for us AND the bears if maintain the healthy respect/fear. Here in East TN, every year we have bears who get put down because they lose their fear of humans. Visitors NEED to understand a bear can get aggressive when hungry. Heck I get aggressive when hungry. Thank you for including this in your video.
About the only time brown bears are aggressive is a mother with her cub. I could immediately tell this was a juvenile who probably just separated from their mother. So it was really just figuring things out for itself.
Sabre Frontiersman bear spray 9oz. It takes a few seconds to empty can so DON'T waste it!

The drone shots really show the beauty of that area! And that bear! Good to know there is a healthy population of bears in that area and hoping that it stays far enough away from humans to have a long life.

Ya, this one rubbed up against my camper real good and I was like,"I'm not going outside until I know what that was!" So I was peeking out all my windows trying to see what was out there. :-)

I was just hanging out in the area waiting for Descend to start. I didn't go far after the move, just parked off highway 89. :-)
How sad for the bear but you have taught us a valuable lesson for scarring unwanted guests away when they don't listen and "go home" 💞👌🤗

Yeah, I was thinking about the horn too. Good news. Also good to move so you don't teach them that humans are ok. Many of us are but many are not and we none of us need bears coming around expecting food. I hope that baby found it's mama. Those mandalas were gorgeous. Such talent.
Debbie is @fleecetrain on IG. She had another huge mandala that was used for a stage at a local fest before. She's really talented.

That bear was way too comfortable being around you, my guess is people are feeding it, and he's not afraid of you. What a beautiful country and a fun day. Great music and good times. Stay safe out there.

The expo looked fun. Thanks for showing us. The bear though is unfortunate . We have a bear who comes around a couple of times a week. They get too used to humans and usually ends badly for the bear. I feel for the bear cause we are the ones intruding on their space.
Yes, I would feel awful if a bear was ever put down because of an interaction with me. So I try to keep my distance. :-0

Loved this! That bear was beautiful, but sadly way to much at ease around people. I loved that camper with the big googly eyes. The artwork was lovely. What a talent that lady has. The wooden spoons were cool too. I love your videos Bex. Thanks for giving me something to dream about!

An airhorn could be a good investment, and some bear spray just in case.
Here in North Florida, we have Blackies too. When I was on a hunting lease property, we had a huge male and a female with a cub. I never went without a large caliber handgun, but not all states allow that, I know.

Well Bex I tend to agree with you that that bear was just a little bit too friendly lol probably a wise thing to move. I am from Tennessee so I am used to camping around bears but you sure don’t want them down in your campsite. Descend on Sierra was really cool. Thanks for sharing safe travels.👍🏻❤️
I have "counter assault" grizzly bear spray 10.2 ounces [i think this is the most potent of bear sprays]....you should get some, if you dont have any. Order it online. **we worry. Better to have some & never need to use it than need it & have nothing to protect yourself. ♡♡♡ wonderful to see you again!!

I have some but it's in my hiking pack. A honk of the horn usually does the trick.
That was best to move on before a habit got out of hand. Too bad you couldn't have left a warning sign for next future camper that visits that spot, & there will be more. Descend looked very welcoming & fun. Lots of food, music, & people having a great time. Loved the camper with the googly eyes. The variety of woods he used to make the spoons. They were beautiful. So good to see you, & know your ok.
This was a great video! Man, that bear didn’t want to give up! Good idea to move. I loved the Maker’s Market. Especially watching that young man making flies. I used to do that with my uncle. What a gathering! Seemed like a really fun, relaxing moment. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Yes, this is one of the few gatherings I attend. Just a really chill vibe where everyone is welcome. No crazy drunks (or druggies) and lots to keep you interested or just sit around your camp if you prefer. Thank you so much for watching! :-)

Somebody or bodies has/have been feeding that young bear either intentionally or by leaving trash out. I put stones in an aluminum can, tape the top closed and shake them at bears who come into camp. Makes an awful racket. If they don't run off I toss one or two on the ground near it while firmly yelling at it to go. Works very well with black bears but I would not do this with Grizzlies. As always, Bex, great video.

Desend definitely takes a person with a certain type mindset. Looked like you were enjoying.
This one is pretty mellow. I like just walking around looking at peoples rigs. Free food and beer is always good too! :-)

You sure make good videos,I've been watching for years. I love Portola and Graeagle, beautiful country, I live further up the line at the end of nowhere. I think I saw your rig in front of Dollar General one year here? Otherwise your rig has a twin. I waited around for a while hoping to meet you, but no sign of you,so assumed it was a similar rig and I went home,lol

In national park they had bear cages. So I said how do you get them in the cages . I'm slow to catch on.
BOO???? Really? LOL! Come to the northeast -New Hampshire to see Clark's Bears. All the black bears in the shows were ophaned cubs, but not well cared for and maybe even spoiled! They are trained in simple tricks rewarded with spoonfuls of soft serve ice cream. Older bears are retired to a separate enclosure.

WOW! you had me at the bear, but that Descent event looked great. I make quilts and quilted products how can I get in on that next year. Is it always in the Sierras? Where was this one?
There are two Descend events. Descend on Lost Sierra is near Portola and is typically held on the Memorial Day weekend. Descend on Bend is near Bend OR and is around Labor Day weekend. They are both awesome and if you do a search you can find the website to purchase a ticket. The Lost Sierra event is a bit smaller and a bit mellower. But both are amazing.

Thank God he wasn't harmful I walked up on a black bear once with a garbage bag in his hand like what you looking at dude I'm trying to have my lunch in peace it was first time walking up on one not going to lie I almost peed myself lol
Get some bear spray.
It works for both bears and cougars and even the rare but dangerous humanoid predator.
As an afterthought…One could’ve taken a large piece of paper or cardboard, created a “Beware of Returning Bear” sign in bold letters, placed inside a zippered baggie to protect from rain or early morning dew, nailed or 🦆taped it to the closest tree therefore sharing advanced warning to others that might decide to pitch a tent in that area possibly with children tagging along. 🏕

Sadly, bears that bother campers with regularity are euthanized. A good lesson to never give them human food.
I wanna live with a cinnamon bear. Seriously I hope people aren't feeding the bear, park rangers will euthanize it if it's too comfortable around humans.

It's a shame the bear can't just live in his home without your intrusion. how very sad. humans seem to want to take over everything. and then blame the native inhabitants for being too friendly. seriously? that's your take on this encounter?
Not sure what you mean?! If you watched the video you saw that I immediately moved campsites right after this as I didn't want to habituate the bear to humans.
