As an NU player, i have to mention Oricorio. Revelation Dance changes type with the bird's tera, due to how its forme change works. Oricorio has been a menace in the lower tiers for most of the generation, and it's because its qd boosted revelation dances hit harder than Tera Blast.
Xerneas and Yveltal aren't in Scarlet and Violet most likely because of Tera. Flutter Mane's Tera Fairy Moonblast, as you mentioned, is already incredibly strong- having that further boosted with essentially a no drawback Life Orb would've been insane. Oh, and we can't forget about Urshifu's Wicked Blow, which is ANOTHER incredibly strong attack that you can't even use Protect against.
I like Tera as a mechanic, but I think it's silly that if you change type for coverage you keep your stab boost for your previous type. Volcarona would've been fine if turning to a ground type to kill heatran came at the cost of stab on fiery dance.
Porygon-Z consistently considered a "One Change Away from being Broken" Pokemon taking full advantage of Stab Tera+Adaptability on its wide Move Pool, as well removing its main downside of Mono-Normal meaning no resistances to make up for its middling bulk.
Shedinja is a neat little edge case. It's unkillable by direct damage when you hand it a little balloon and terra-electric, so you have to use indirect damage like sand, poison, or emotional harm. I'm told it's been a powerful ubers counter in the past because kyogre didn't have an answer to ghost+bug and hazards aren't as popular in doubles, and that was without tera. It's banned, right? I wonder if it'll be appropriate to allow it by banning balloon or tera on it? Or can VGC not implement complex bans? Maybe Wonderguard needs an added line: "this ability always uses the pokemon's original type" so that terra, soak, etc can't make it OP.
I’ve really enjoyed the Tera mechanic. Sad that it will be gone next generation. Really made a lot of pokemon viable and gave the most diverse meta. Still wish incinaroar was left out of the game.

Tera and Dynamax kinda took away the fun for me. Any pokemon can Do it at any point of the game and completly turn the fight or Generate unpredictable Situations, it just aint the same as Megas or Z-Moves (even tho i think Z Moves were also bs)

I was so convinced that tera would just get banned for singles, the same way dynamax got banned in gen 8. Imo it's a feature that is just simply too strong for singles, _Especially without open teamsheets_ The majority of OU bans boiled down to "well this pokemon is really strong ... and tera makes it impossible to counter it"

keep in mind that there's a ton different examples to choose from for each of these subgroups. i chose the ones i did because for the most part i hadn't talked about them in other videos, but pretty much everything in this video could've very well been different.
I think a big problem with terastalization (and dynamax too) is that there's really no drawback to it, look at z-moves or megas, both made the Pokemon sacrifice an item slot so the player had to really think if having that powerful gimmick outweighed the benefits another item could bring. Also, with z-moves it was a one turn thing, so you had to be careful when you used it and there was always the chance of your user(s) going down before you ever get your z-move off. And with megas, it was of course balanced by only being given to certain Pokemon and there are cases because of the stat and typing changes that mega evolving wasn't always optimal, or cases like with Garchomp where the mega was actually a downgrade. Were megas and z-moves perfectly balanced? Fuck no, but there was at least a bit of sacrifice a player had to make in order to use this powerful tool. I think somethings that would help balance tera at least a bit is having a Pokemon's tera type be revealed at the start of battle like how VGC has their open team sheets, that removes the whole guessing game that Pokemon like Volcarona or Baxcalibur abuse. But to have some kind of trade-off that I mentioned with z-moves or megas, sure tera could also be tied to holding a tera shard, but another way to balance it is having the Pokemon FULLY become their new type and removing the stab they usually have. Kingambit can have those fairy-type resistances and a fairy terablast but at the cost of its dark and steel stab, or Lando-T can boost it's flying stab even further but lose its ground stab in return. This way players really have to consider what situations are worth terastalizing in and narrows the pool of Pokemon that can take full advantage of the gimmick. I know there'd still be Pokemon that can abuse this version of tera like e-killer Dragonite, who wants to be a normal-type anyway, and I know Gamefreak will probably never reuse the mechanic again or rebalance it but in the slim chance that they do, that's what I'd hope they do with it in the future.

It's not a 1.5x boos to STAB moves. It's essentially adaptability on that STAB type, which means a 1,33... (4/3). Similar to how the boosting stages work actually.
Personally I like using Garganacl with tera ghost, it bassically just has a dark weaknesses, and while it's not the best weakness to have it also gets body press
I still think tera is still arguably too much for overused, but I don't expect that to happen if a tera ban happens at all until much closer to the end of gen 9, but at the same time I respect people doing all they can to keep it. Still think it creates too many unhealthy dynamics despite it's skill based nature and creates too many balancing issues and I feel like it limits variety a lot of the time
at this point it's pretty clear that tera won't be banned. what's interesting about its legality is that the better players get the more in favor of tera being legal they are, which is one of the big reasons why action isn't being taken action against. There's more obviously, definitely broken stuff that they're taking care of first. a tera suspect could absolutely still happen, but i'd be surprised.
This generation clearly shows that the new additions aren't thought at all for singles (not that they should, after all they have no obligations to support something made by fans), VGC is amazing right now, while singles almost destroys itself before DLC 2. Defensive teras ARE ban-worthy, it was one of the reasons why volc and gliscor pre dlc 2 were banned after all, they could turn into suicune out of nowhere and there is nothing you can do about it.

controversial opinion : there's no skill involved in tera at all and top players like it because it dumbs down a very complicated game no, tera is not healthy, even offensive tera is not healthy. Why? Because Z - Moves weren't healthy too, and they were 1 use and occupied an item slot. For instance, Tera + Specs / band does about the same damage of a z move to sometimes doing even more damage than a z move based on the same move, it doesn't cost an item slot and you can do it every turn. But somehow this stuff is balanced and ok, while z moves are not. There's a bit of an obvious contradiction here no? And this is just while not taking consideration of its defensive potential Yeah nah, probably they are on tied with dynamax as the unhealthiest mechanic introduced by gamefreak

Ive heard someone describe the state of gen 9 ou as survivors bias where the only people left like a mechanic even if it causes problems. I still hate how the tera cte was handled either way. Absolutely baffling.
Personally tera feels fine whenever I play, but there have def been people who stopped playing because of it. The way it was handled is something i'm less well-versed in, but from what i've heard its a bit shaky.
It would be interesting if gen 10 added a held item that was essentially “tera-lite”, one for each type but all having the same name (I.E. “Tera Badge (Normal)”) so that only one can be used when item clause is in effect. (And would allow the opponent to see what type the Pokemon would be with open team sheets). How this item would be different from tera would be that the Pokemon changes it’s type at the start of the battle (Grass Type Incineroar immune to sleep but not immune to prankster), the Pokémon’s stab is replaced with that of the held item (Ice type Regieleki not having Electric STAB), and the item matching the Pokémon’s original type doesn’t give it a boost to stab (Fairy type Flutter Mane still only having x1.5 STAB on fairy moves). In short, the idea is for the item to be used on Pokemon with bad typing and are willing to lose duel stab in exchange of loosing any quad weaknesses or a number of weaknesses to commonly used types
Espathra and Annihilape too. Espathra could easily tera out of Dark/Ghost weaknesses and use them to setup for free while boosting its DGleam to KO them. Annihilape definitely would have gotten banned at some point still due to 6-0ing stall but Tera pretty much let it beat most teams bc you could tera out of weakness and stack up Bulk Ups while the now non super effective moves after tera just boost up your rage fist.
There's so many examples you could have used that making a part 2 for this isn't super farfetched. Totally not saying this to see more peak content nope not all...
I’m a pretty serious Ubers player and I can tell you that Tera electric miraidon is straight up not real, but miraidon is still a top 3 Tera abuser. Except it’s Tera is whatever specific immunity or resist you want to fish for with ur team, and try to set up on some normally soft chrck
You know, you're right. Tera is fairly balanced, even if the mons introduced this gen have been powerscaled pretty crazy in some formats. Is the balance of Tera just an accident, or were these all well thought out components in their post- DS roadmap that they've been developing for over a decade, and Dynamax was their one big gimmick balance error? tera on top of a type you already have is only a 33% boost though? because it goes from 1.5x to 2x. but 1.5 is accurate for any tera that adds a new STAB to the mon
Bro how could you forget Heatran as the classic Volcarona check and instead name Talonflame. It's not that you're wrong, but 4 times resist/immunity on your STAB moves and potentially carrying roar to remove your boosts is such a perfect example.
Didn’t even mention chi-yu Tera fire blasting everything to death in sun, or espathra defensive tera’ing for an extra boost to clean sweep your team and Tera fight your gambit. Gotta love it

I still think Calyrex Shadow and Regieleki are the two worst designed Pokémon of all time, if the only thing keeping these broken Pokémon in check is that they get halted by one specific type (or in Calyrex shadows case, one specific Pokémon) and you give them coverage to deal with them in the form of Hidden Power or Tera Blast, it’s a badly designed Pokémon.
Just remember… Smogon tested whether or not to ban tera after like only a month to get used to it when their simulator still had major bugs. I remember trying to climb the ladder and seeing Glimorra’s toxic debris ability trigger on non-contact moves. I have no idea why we tested something with so many permutations and options without a proper amount of time to explore it. I imagine that’s the biggest reason it ended up uncontrolled rather than controlled. Mind you, uncontrolled was what I wanted at the time; now I’m a fan of specifically banning Tera Blast to see how many problems it solves. Most of the major tier shifts or bans Im aware of usually site Tera Blast as a major reason the ban happened or was considered. The three bans I can think of that didnt are Fluttermane and Iron Bundle which suffer from the stacking STAB problem you mentioned, and Gliscore which got banned for no reason other than they refuse to address the problem of Goldengo and would rather ban a multi-gen staple because spikes, and stealth rock are absurdly powerful as long as Goldehngo is around.
They banned gliscor for being too hard to kill, letting it set up hazards really easily and toxic stall. Also glimmora’s ability activates on all physically moves, not just contact.
@@theknight1702 Yes, yes, Gliscor sets up hazards. So do a lot of things. It might have it's pick of the all three, but when you invest in more than one it cuts into all the other moves it can use to stall. That's mostly a problem as removing hazards is a nightmare this gen thanks to goldehngo though. There isn't too much fundamentally different about Gliscors options this Gen. It's always had poison heal along with uturn, toxic and protect stall as an option, and this gen has so much offensive powercreep that punching through gliscor itself should in theory be easier on the turns between protects. It's ripe to get set up on if you play into how predictable protect is. Hazards itself is beyond oppressive this gen though because Goldengho effectively blocks every single means of hazard removal which makes hazards do a ton more damage over the course of the game. Gliscor is good at forcing a switch. Goldehgo is the monster that makes switching hurt as much as it does this gen with it's crazy ability and typing. Like... Poison Heal has been annoying but not a problem for a long time. It's like how they blamed and banned sleep as a whole rather, ruining multiple pokemon in lower tiers, rather than looking at the threats actually abusing sleep in OU, one of which was freaking Darkrai getting moved down. Or how they banned Houndstone rather than the move Last Respects because 'it was the only pokemon that had it' except we literally already knew and had proof that Basculegion was capable of learning the move. We might not have *had* access to Basculegion yet, but the proof was there, and Houndstone is not really that powerful as soon as you remove Last Respects. Like, the way they've been assessing threats this gen is super questionable to me.
the tera boost isn't 1.5x on top of normal stab, i got mixed up in my words there. It ends up at 2x, so the boost is 1.33x(ish).

Kingambit can have those fairy-type resistances and a fairy terablast but at the cost of its dark and steel stab, or Lando-T can boost it's flying stab even further but lose its ground stab in return. This way players really have to consider what situations are worth terastalizing in and narrows the pool of Pokemon that can take full advantage of the gimmick.
I know there'd still be Pokemon that can abuse this version of tera like e-killer Dragonite, who wants to be a normal-type anyway, and I know Gamefreak will probably never reuse the mechanic again or rebalance it but in the slim chance that they do, that's what I'd hope they do with it in the future.
Tera is annoying. Its used more cheaply than innovationally. And nobody seems to want a separate Non-tera ladder made

It's not a 1.5x boos to STAB moves. It's essentially adaptability on that STAB type, which means a 1,33... (4/3). Similar to how the boosting stages work actually.

I still think tera is still arguably too much for overused, but I don't expect that to happen if a tera ban happens at all until much closer to the end of gen 9, but at the same time I respect people doing all they can to keep it. Still think it creates too many unhealthy dynamics despite it's skill based nature and creates too many balancing issues and I feel like it limits variety a lot of the time
at this point it's pretty clear that tera won't be banned. what's interesting about its legality is that the better players get the more in favor of tera being legal they are, which is one of the big reasons why action isn't being taken action against. There's more obviously, definitely broken stuff that they're taking care of first. a tera suspect could absolutely still happen, but i'd be surprised.
This generation clearly shows that the new additions aren't thought at all for singles (not that they should, after all they have no obligations to support something made by fans), VGC is amazing right now, while singles almost destroys itself before DLC 2.
Defensive teras ARE ban-worthy, it was one of the reasons why volc and gliscor pre dlc 2 were banned after all, they could turn into suicune out of nowhere and there is nothing you can do about it.

no, tera is not healthy, even offensive tera is not healthy. Why? Because Z - Moves weren't healthy too, and they were 1 use and occupied an item slot.
For instance, Tera + Specs / band does about the same damage of a z move to sometimes doing even more damage than a z move based on the same move, it doesn't cost an item slot and you can do it every turn. But somehow this stuff is balanced and ok, while z moves are not. There's a bit of an obvious contradiction here no?
And this is just while not taking consideration of its defensive potential

Personally tera feels fine whenever I play, but there have def been people who stopped playing because of it. The way it was handled is something i'm less well-versed in, but from what i've heard its a bit shaky.
It would be interesting if gen 10 added a held item that was essentially “tera-lite”, one for each type but all having the same name (I.E. “Tera Badge (Normal)”) so that only one can be used when item clause is in effect. (And would allow the opponent to see what type the Pokemon would be with open team sheets).
How this item would be different from tera would be that the Pokemon changes it’s type at the start of the battle (Grass Type Incineroar immune to sleep but not immune to prankster), the Pokémon’s stab is replaced with that of the held item (Ice type Regieleki not having Electric STAB), and the item matching the Pokémon’s original type doesn’t give it a boost to stab (Fairy type Flutter Mane still only having x1.5 STAB on fairy moves). In short, the idea is for the item to be used on Pokemon with bad typing and are willing to lose duel stab in exchange of loosing any quad weaknesses or a number of weaknesses to commonly used types
Espathra and Annihilape too. Espathra could easily tera out of Dark/Ghost weaknesses and use them to setup for free while boosting its DGleam to KO them. Annihilape definitely would have gotten banned at some point still due to 6-0ing stall but Tera pretty much let it beat most teams bc you could tera out of weakness and stack up Bulk Ups while the now non super effective moves after tera just boost up your rage fist.
Tera-Ground Comfey is unkillable and if you say anything otherwise you're wrong

Bro how could you forget Heatran as the classic Volcarona check and instead name Talonflame. It's not that you're wrong, but 4 times resist/immunity on your STAB moves and potentially carrying roar to remove your boosts is such a perfect example.
I was debating with heatran for this slot, went with the others because volc oftentimes runs HP ground which dunks on it.

I still think Calyrex Shadow and Regieleki are the two worst designed Pokémon of all time, if the only thing keeping these broken Pokémon in check is that they get halted by one specific type (or in Calyrex shadows case, one specific Pokémon) and you give them coverage to deal with them in the form of Hidden Power or Tera Blast, it’s a badly designed Pokémon.

Just remember… Smogon tested whether or not to ban tera after like only a month to get used to it when their simulator still had major bugs. I remember trying to climb the ladder and seeing Glimorra’s toxic debris ability trigger on non-contact moves. I have no idea why we tested something with so many permutations and options without a proper amount of time to explore it.
I imagine that’s the biggest reason it ended up uncontrolled rather than controlled.
Mind you, uncontrolled was what I wanted at the time; now I’m a fan of specifically banning Tera Blast to see how many problems it solves. Most of the major tier shifts or bans Im aware of usually site Tera Blast as a major reason the ban happened or was considered. The three bans I can think of that didnt are Fluttermane and Iron Bundle which suffer from the stacking STAB problem you mentioned, and Gliscore which got banned for no reason other than they refuse to address the problem of Goldengo and would rather ban a multi-gen staple because spikes, and stealth rock are absurdly powerful as long as Goldehngo is around.
They banned gliscor for being too hard to kill, letting it set up hazards really easily and toxic stall. Also glimmora’s ability activates on all physically moves, not just contact.
@@theknight1702 Yes, yes, Gliscor sets up hazards. So do a lot of things. It might have it's pick of the all three, but when you invest in more than one it cuts into all the other moves it can use to stall. That's mostly a problem as removing hazards is a nightmare this gen thanks to goldehngo though. There isn't too much fundamentally different about Gliscors options this Gen. It's always had poison heal along with uturn, toxic and protect stall as an option, and this gen has so much offensive powercreep that punching through gliscor itself should in theory be easier on the turns between protects. It's ripe to get set up on if you play into how predictable protect is.
Hazards itself is beyond oppressive this gen though because Goldengho effectively blocks every single means of hazard removal which makes hazards do a ton more damage over the course of the game. Gliscor is good at forcing a switch. Goldehgo is the monster that makes switching hurt as much as it does this gen with it's crazy ability and typing. Like... Poison Heal has been annoying but not a problem for a long time.
It's like how they blamed and banned sleep as a whole rather, ruining multiple pokemon in lower tiers, rather than looking at the threats actually abusing sleep in OU, one of which was freaking Darkrai getting moved down. Or how they banned Houndstone rather than the move Last Respects because 'it was the only pokemon that had it' except we literally already knew and had proof that Basculegion was capable of learning the move. We might not have *had* access to Basculegion yet, but the proof was there, and Houndstone is not really that powerful as soon as you remove Last Respects.
Like, the way they've been assessing threats this gen is super questionable to me.
