Great episode, DaPurpleSharpie was such a fun guest for the podcast!! Hearing you all talk about that Teen Titans flash game brought back so many childhood memories, that was probably the first "fighting game" I ever played in my life

Really been enjoying the triple ko podcasts since discovering. I would love to hear you guys talk about tier lists and seasons as they’ve related to your experiences in various game. Like did you change characters. Was your character suddenly low or top tier. What your perception of changes in the community were
For the record, blade strangers did get a dlc update of three characters. I don't recall any news since. Also SNK Heroines has no low attacks but there are some unblockable items and guard break is a thing (also my head cannon is two people with keys looking at each other to unlock the button that cuts the stream). Currently no other corrections I can offer. Great ep.
You guys at Triple KO always make my day better when I am having a bad day. I love listening to your thoughts on certain games and I want to give a shout out to Justin Wong for promoting the new arcade 1up cabinet of Marvel vs Capcom 2.
Great episode guys, and great job allowing input when possible from everyone involved, especially Sharpie as the guest. Really looking forward to potential future collabs.

Loved Sharpie in this episode. Mixed in so well and was so knowledgeable. First time I've seen her after I found this channel. Great video. Time to play some games!
What's your opinion on original IP fighting games on 80s/early 90s computers? Are they indie? The beautiful Elfmania, or great playing (for the time) Shadow Fighter on the Amiga for example 🤔
It's interesting how the stories of Skullgirls and Them's Fighting Herds are connected. After the C&D incident that extinguished the life of the MLP fighting game that Mane6 was working on at the time, and their rebirth with Them's Fighting Herds which was using the same engine as Skullgirls, I went and got both games. Ever since, I've been following their updates quite closely.
I’m SOOOO glad Rivals of Aether got some love on this episode! It’s such a well put together game and the OST is absolutely brilliant. And I had the same exact reaction as Matt when they announced RoA2, it looked suspiciously good lmao.
I'm surprised that was his only reason why he thought RoA2 was an April Fools joke and not the fact that it almost always gets new news on April 1st lmao
One thing I really love about this podcast is that everytime they mention a video game I never heard before, I stop the podcast and look the game up on youtube
SkullGirls 2nd Encore is the fighting game of a generation. It’s very challenging but It’s so good. Best fighting game I’ve ever played if I don’t mention UNICLR.. I’m an old man now so it’s going to be tough to reach the status of Skullgirls. I love the guest you have this week! Great work! Finally back to good TKO conversations!! Thanks again!
I'm bad a fighting games. I've never really been good at any of them, but i still like the genre itself. I don't actively play any, but i do follow some of the FGC content once and awhile, and i love this "podcast". Sharpie here is awesome, and the conversations here are engaging and interesting! Keep it up guys.
15:39 Yeah, Max, you gotta. And while you're at it, do one for Skullgirls too (pretty sure everyone has a level 3 and some characters even have level 5 supers there). 1:11:56 Party Animals?
to give you guys context for how old skullgirls is, when it was first released all those jojo references weren't memey anime references, they were obscure capcom game references
Technically speaking: Melty Blood was actually an Indie Fighting Game. Like before Type Moon Blew Up, it was an indeed an Indie Title for an Indie Series.
I love this episode, discovering some more indie fighting games like Blade Strangers, 5 Force Fighters, and Pocket Bravery. I'd also like to mention a little game called Flappy Fighter on iOS. Sadly it got removed from the store a few years ago and I miss that game and I want it to come back so bad. Also, could the Gang Beast-like game Max was talking about be Party Animals? Me and my friends are waiting for that game.
It was nice hearing you guys mention Project + and the different Smash mods in this topic. I think that's how a lot of people start, they mod existing IPs, which then leads to their own fighting game. Thanks to P+ and melee, Rivals of Aether exists for example. It's really nice to see people talk about indie fighting games
I'm actually surprised none of you mentioned the Capoeira Fighter indie game. That was super indie back in 2001-2002 I think. One of the earliest projects I can think of. You could also consider the way Taiwanese fighters that got released on PC. They were purely digital titles but we're made by a team of 1-4 people depending on the crew as most were software pirates trying to go legit.
I made a huge fighting game about Fate stay night when I was a teen, using mugen. I created 2 characters and modified the rest, I worked for hundreds of hours during a summer, writing thousands of lines of code... Then I discovered another one, made in 3d, so superior to mine in every aspect... Well, it was a fine summer. I learned a lot.
Don't give up on your idea man, just because someone else made something similar to you doesn’t mean yours isn't unique. The game was made in 3d, but yours will be made in 2d. The roster choices you made could've be different, the gameplay could be different. There's a lot of fangames out there all based on the same IP but done in different ways.
It's cool to see how the guys take turns being the main host of the episodes. Also I was skeptical about how the three would click, but they are great together.
In defense of SNK Heroines, I'm pretty sure she's misremembering the mechanics. There was no jump button, but there was a guard button. There was no crouching, but there were also no unblockably low attacks. There might have been some items thrown on the floor that exploded after a while or something that you couldn't block if you were still standing on their location, but that's about it. Gameplay-wise, I'd consider it more unusually-different compared to the standard style fighting game than I'd consider it "bad". I watched some gameplay in Japan and there were some deeper tactics used in there that got overlooked most places because cow bikini.
Cool games. It's like a renaissance of beat 'em up games. At a recent steam festival, I played the demo of another potentially good game - Arnold Bounty Hunter. It looks more like the first Battletoads - there are not only fights, but also various adventures with platforming, hydrocycles. It also looks interesting. I liked the demo.
Please talk about Power Rangers Battle for the Grid. Even if the mechanics don’t speak to you, it already has BOTH cross play and rollback net code. Plus the mechanics are pretty fun. This game needs more eyes on it! Thank you!
I tried queuing into a match on Power Rangers last night (casual) with cross play turned on and couldn't find a match after 5 min of waiting in matchmaking. :/

Oh, that's right. I guess I wasn't really consciously separating doujin fighters /derivative fan games with creator owned indie games, so the early game that always comes to mind even though I never played it was Eternal Fighter Zero.
Okay. I'm inspired now. I've wanted to make a fighting game forever, and have even tried a few times, but never got very far. So, honest question, as mostly a graphic artist who has been developing their 2D asset creation and animation skills: where do you begin? Complete character roster, design docs, finding the gimmick, finding an engine, trying to enlist other creators (in my case, somebody who can code)... What's the first step in tackling a project like this. I have a ton of ideas about everything except where to begin?
Indie fighting games have definitely been around since the 00s, maybe even the 90s. But I think it was more prevalent and accessible in Japan with the doujin fighters. The earliest one I can think of is Melty Blood, but I'm sure there's earlier ones.
