I'll never forget this one. In 2004 when I was in middle school, a new kid just moved here and my friend group became fast friends with him.
One day during gym he said his uncle works at Midway and they're gonna start making MKvsDC. We were all grizzled Vets of the "my uncle works at Nintendo" age so none of us believed him.
Long story short, he was very humble with it and we all got free copies of the game lmao

1:00:30 People used to say you could unlock Sonic in Super Smash Bros for N64 if you can beat the game on Very Hard with One Life. It was this "impossible" challenge. But I did it after many weeks of practice after hearing about it. As we all know I did not unlock Sonic. Because he wasn't programmed in. But I did get pretty sick at Smash back then. And this was long before the Gamecube even. And people said the same for Melee but no one fell for it. SO... That's why Sonic in Brawl was such a big deal. Good times. Good times.

    • @MoDeep1212

I remember a similar Smash 64 rumor, but the one I heard was that there were 4 “hidden” characters that had to be unlocked by beating the game on Very Hard with one Stock and you had to use specific characters to unlock them.
The fake hidden characters were: Raichu, Wigglytuff, Giant DK, & Metal Mario; and you would unlock them by using Pikachu, Jigglypuff, DK and Mario respectively. My little bro tried for a year to unlock Raichu before giving up 😂

Justin hit the nail on the head for me, Sonic in Melee made sense to me as a kid cause of Mewtwo's crazy unlock conditions, lol.

1:05:50 Okay Marcus Fenix for MK9 this was a fun rumor that I think a lot of people forget where some of this came from.
It all started when Gamespot was holding an online tourney for greatest video game villain of all time.
They took two villains paired them in brackets and people would vote, one of the match ups they had was Shao Kahn vs General Raam.
Which would of been well enough to get the MK Community all riled up. But this before MK9's release, all sorts of rumors and speculations we're going around about who would be revealed next after the E3 trailer.
So Ed Boon decided to light a fire and said if Shao Kahn won that poll he'd reveal a new character teasing people with a picture of a woman's leg in a red boot. (This was later revealed to be Skarlet.)
After that poll fakes of Marcus Fenix in MK started circulating
Edit: The fact Justin mentions "The Boot." Makes me so happy

Thank you Justin, Matt, and Maximillian for this walk down memory lane.
Much like Max had stated a lot of my fellow gamer would just copy the codes out of the magazines and then try to input them. I usually did NOT have much luck in the arcades especially when attempting to fight the Ryo in FF2, Mr Karate in AoF, or Geese in AoF2 especially since none of us knew how to get those secret bosses to unlock back then (had to wait for the homeport and pray that they were included). I remember that I had the dubious luck of playing a lot of the players in MvC2 that would use the hidden characters (via the select screen).
Really had high hopes for that 2D version of MvC3 but alas that fake is never meant to be.
Had a lot of laughs watching this episode, thanks again gents.

I had Alpha 2 for PS back in the day and I had always heard that Evil Ryu was in the game but I couldn't figure out how to unlock him. The code for Shin Akuma worked and he was awesome but I wanted to see Evil Ryu so bad, he was confirmed in the Saturn version and I couldn't believe they wouldn't put him in my version. There were so many ridiculous codes I found online, 20+ step methods but nothing worked. I was a naive kid so I wrote a letter to Capcom asking why I couldn't unlock this character, A few weeks went by and I moved on, but to their credit, Capcom wrote me back explaining that Evil Ryu wasn't playable in this version of the game. It was a post card with really cool Alpha 1 artwork of Ken and Ryu on it and I put it on my bulletin board where it stayed for years. In the end that postcard meant more to me than the reason I wrote them in the first place.

First, the Street FIghter III had double subtitiles "Second Impact: Giant Attack" "Third Srike: FIght for the future". Second, i've heard that by the time of Third Strike they were close to running out of space in the memory, so whatever 4th version would have been for certain, the final one.
With all that considered, it would have been called "Street FIghter III - FInal Match - Decisive vistory !" or something like that, with every future rerelease taking advantage of the second subtitle exemple "Street FIghter III - FInal Match - Ultimate challenger" "Street FIghter III - FInal Match - Online Edition" Street FIghter III - FInal Match - Unlimited battle!" etc...

Mewtwo in Melee, Mushroom Kingdom Hearts, and the violent Brawl DLC are the only big rumors I heard as a kid. The last two were obvious fakes thanks to their announcement dates. But for the longest time none of my friends could unlock Mewtwo. I had the most characters unlocked among us and still didn't have 'em, so we were all suspicious if it was even true. It didn't help that Melee had more characters than the actual number of empty slots on the starting character select screen. Rumors were rampant.

Stuff like Mewtwo in Melee, that requires 20 hours of gameplay to unlock, being real also really helped lend credence to Sonic in Melee, which was fake. Like the real unlock conditions are already ridiculous, Mewtwo objectively isn't even the most esoteric character to unlock (since Game & Watch requires additional steps on top of unlocking Mewtwo!), so why not Sonic? Why not violent Brawl? Things are already this ridiculous lol.

The Sonic in Melee rumor may have stemmed from a misunderstanding from E3 2001. Yuji Naka saw Super Smash Bros. Melee at E3 2001, same with Hideo Kojima's son, and both Yuji Naka and Hideo Kojima both met with Masahiro Sakurai and requested for Sonic and Snake, respectively, to be added into Melee. While Sakurai also personally wanted both characters added into Melee, as well as others like Wario, Melee had an infamous tight development period of 14 months, ending before November 2001, and he could not add these characters in time, so he had to wait until Brawl to add them in.

On the same page they had an April Fools contest where they told the readers that somewhere in the magazine was a fake story and if you wrote them a letter and tell them what it was you could win a prize. They received thousands of letters but very few correct guesses. Faked screenshots/photoshops weren't really a thing back then. Y'all didn't mention it, but the reason why older games like Melee had ridiculous requirements like leaving the game on for 20 hours for Mewtwo was because Japan had a vendetta against rental stores in the early aughts. I can't remember where I learned that but my heart says it was Derek from SSFF?

When I was a kid, I played the crap out of Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 on the GameCube. I read up that there was supposedly some way to unlock the Third Hokage to be playable and tried for so many years but found out when I was a teen that it was false info.

I remember being dead certain that there was a Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter in the 90s. I even remember seeing one screenshot. But it was always fake. Maybe later on what I saw was someone's MUGEN but I didn't know what that was at the time.

I'm gonna have to say that Capcom have developed a new form of handling leaks and it's them purposefully leaking enough info themselves to counter data mining and fake leaks.
Case in point SF6 with the roster intro art and the single commentary lines , RE4R with the gameplay demos leaking Krauser and the new knife mechanics.
They're now putting in hidden info in their demos and trailers to whet appetites enough and have a control of the discourse. Whether the SF6 roster leak was intentional or not I think it did more good than harm, which is rare.
Edit: Also I think it would be amazing if a Bosch rival fight had him use Adon's (or Sagat's) moveset. Cause he doesn't use Luke's stance, it's a Muay Thai stance

Street fighter 3 final strike would be sick!, with street fighter 2 characters added, all sf3 stages plus new ones, cross play, all the different color variations for every character. Would love to see Cammy,Sagat and other characters in sf3.
