Tekken 4 could've quite easily been the Third Strike of the franchise had they released a version of the game where the gameplay was far more polished. The art style and music sets it apart from every other game in Tekken history with its 2000s, Y2K, Japanese city, modern aesthetic. Similar to how Third Strike is the only Street Fighter that captured that 90s, urban, street aesthetic.
I am a casual and that's why i'll give myself a pass when i say T4 is my favorite fighting game ever just because of the nostalgia for everything, the style, hud, stages, soundtrack, even character designs.. but yeah i see now why the gameplay and mechanics are kinda weird.
I don't think there's a greater misstep to me in a fighting games than Playstation All Stars Battle Royale where in order to earn points, you need to hit someone with your super. It makes gameplay feels so much less satisfying when it came to doing combos or making good recovery; all that matters is you nail one move. And depending on who you play, whoever had the best execution move or could hit the most amount of people with their level 3, had an automatic advantage. Neat things there, but just an idea that totally hurt the brawler genre.
That video on the atmosphere of T4 was by TheGamingBrit, and a lot of Europeans don’t mind the speed of T4 as much cause they grew up on the slower PAL ps1 games
@@tiger-rgn I just mean that the overall slower feel of 4 wasn’t as drastic of a change as it was for us over here due to tekken always having been somewhat slower for them. I’m from North America so I’m really just relaying the info from somewhere else cause I thought it was interesting
Matt’s mic volume is always much quieter when compared to Max and Justin. Even when I’m using headphones listening podcast style. Fun fact about Tekken 4 is that there's an unused voice line of the announcer saying Jinpachi. So he could've already been thought of as a boss before they had to settle on poopy diapers.
Yup! Voicelines for the whole TTT1 cast if i'm not mistaken and even Dr.Abel (unused character names too). Harada has said the game was supposed to have a bigger roster but they were too time constrained
Vanilla MK3 was also on SNES. I remember Aladdin's Castle in OKC getting an MK3 cab, and it was the only arcade that had it. The Tilt at our mall got UMK3 shortly after, though.
Surprised they didn't bring up Soulcalibur Lost Swords (and Tekken Revolution to a lesser extent), but maybe they'd classify those as "experiments" rather than missteps.
Man I also bought MK3 longbox at a store a couple years ago simply because "YALL HAVE THIS?" $20 well spent I played the hell out of it that week I DID have the Genesis version when that came out, and that's the MK3 I played for years
I really liked Tekken 4, adding the 8 way run from Soul Calibur opened up so much mobility for me. Didn't have a problem with working with the terrain issues but I was also playing a lot of DOA 2 and DAO 3 which was similar to that gameplay style too. I'd say the stage design was a bigger detractor rather than the movement system, wouldn't complain if it came back, Soul Calibur has been just fine with 8 way run but they've never added uneven terrain to the franchise either.
Tekken 4 is a masterpiece, it’s main issue is it was WAY ahead of its time (testament to this is how fondly its looked upon now) and issues stemming from a competitive pov. It was one real update away from being perfect.
17:30 Armageddon's only real issue is limited time. It was a third MK game released yearly and was meant to be the end of MK, Midway was going down. It was always meant to be an asset dump, basically Tilogy 2 and stuff like fatalities got cut for time. Konquest was still okay and kreate-a-fighter is still super fun even to this day and you just know it will never return. 52:02 It also introduced Mecha Zangief.
SFEX3 was a decent enough game, but it had the misfortune of releasing after Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2, and at the same time as TTT PS2 (not to mention Third Strike, Garou and MvC2 for 2D fans), so there really wasn't an audience for it and the graphics were really rough compared to those other 3D games.
Somehow I completely blocked tripping in Brawl as a thing when I played it. Dead or Alive is my favorite series, and I was hoping 6 would get called out. I, like many others, got extra slighted with the removal of tag. They made too many bad calls and I couldn't anymore. I'll play 4, 2U, and 5 and keep it going.

I went form world warrior directly to super so for me that upgrade was great! I live in Sweden and all I had in stores was world warrior, I had to import Super from Japan. I couldn’t find Turbo or Hyper Fighting anywhere.
A good follow up to this topic I think would be fighting game advertising and trailers like the Blood storm Johnny Cage, the SFxT trailers and the KoF All Stars WWE crossover trailers
Tekken 4 felt like the ground or street level version of tekken. You got jins redesign and pauls look. Darker. Heck the mosh pit level and surrounded by normal people cheering two dudes beating the shit out of each other. Dorya king returns, and everything feels like its falling apart. Seeing it for the first time in arcade as a kid was oppressive and amazing.
Ex3 was a great game that people didn't give a lot of credit for. At the time it was released, it was part of PS2 launch titles and it was competing with Tekken Tag. Two Tag games and EX3 tag system wasn't fluid as Tekken Tag. Tekken Tag looked gorgeous on the PS2, that it looks even better then the Arcade Version. This was like the first time a home port console was better than the arcade version.
I remember my old man grabbed Midway Arcade Treasures 2 way back in the day at launch, and for some stupid ass reason, they didn't have Ultimate MK3 and had only Vanilla.
SF3 honestly might be the misstep that had the longest hold over a FG franchise. Like that game happens, everyone hates on it for being different and then SF4 and SF5 wallow in its own nostalgia ridden waters of SF2 neverland to win back the older fans favor. Nothing changes, all the “legacy” characters keep showing up and SF3 stuff eats shit (mostly I know we’ve had some dlc appearances). Even with SF6 approaching and finally injecting the series with the swagger and energy of SF3 and progressing the story, WERE NOT GETTING A SINGLE SF3 CHARACTER on the default roster or potentially the first waves of DLC. Like the scars run that deep and it makes me sad that this is how the real life timeline turned out.
I'm hoping the devs throw a curveball at EVO everyone knows the leaked DLC but it's only 4 characters where the SF5 DLC was usually 6. They could do a trailer for one of the leaked DLC characters and follow up with Dudley and Makoto the crowd would go nuts.
It's funny cause MK3 and ST were the first games of those series, and the first fighting games, I ever played so I loved them. Then I played MK2 and UMK3 and discovered Scorpion and realized I definitely was missing out haha

iirc you could actually change the speed on the SNES version of SSF2. If you press left or right on the title screen, you can choose between 1 or 3 stars, 1 bring slowest and 3 being fastest. At least that's what I remember. Am I crazy?
I still go back to MKX every now and again because it's so fun. I have very little drive to return to MK11, and I played about 1000 hours of it. I really hope MK12 ups the aggression.
I personally was perfectly happy not having the turbo speed in Super SF2, as I absolutely hated (and still do) trying to play it at top speed, but I realize I'm no longer the target audience for the speed, at that point, and that the OPTION for those who LIKE it would've been nice.
Interestingly with Max saying he can't recall seeing MK3 in arcades, I'm not sure I ever saw a UMK3 cabinet, just MK3 cabinets that were upgraded with the new marquee but the same Sindel/Kahn image on the sides. And recently I saw a machine that was UMK3, but the side panels of MK1 with Daniel Pasina. I'm sure it would have kept the MK2 control board if it didn't need the run button.
As a kid I didn't mind the "missing characters" of MK3. Granted at the time I liked MK as a game and not focused on specific characters. As for MK11, while I did stop playing it due to the whole "Yeah we had our guys look at videos and photos of the dead and dying" thing, I did have more interest in that than MKX. All the stuff MKX had, I never even went and played it, just looked at the story. But MK11 caught my attention.
Gotta say, KOF wise I was expecting 2001 to be mentioned rather KOF 96 and 99 of all titles. This may just be me, but 99 was dope dude. Personally I find 96 and 97 comparably even as they both had their issues gameplay wise. It’s kinda funny that SSFII was the first title mentioned, as that’s what got me into Fighting Games in the first place. XD Also, as for Missteps regarding story in Fighters, the two big ones for me are Tekken 6 and MK11. And DOA6 considering Honoka, who even if we get a Reboot, won’t vanish due to her popularity in Japan.
Tekken 4 and SoulCalibur III I absolutely love, and I even love SoulCalibur V. But Dead or Alive 6... Oof. However, I don't think they have to reboot it. Once you figure out how the story mode works you can make sense of the story. Is it perfect? No, but it does end with a cliffhanger so I would personally like to see where the story goes from there. Mortal Kombat and SoulCalibur had to reboot because they wrote themselves in a corner and had to find a way to continue the story. DOA's story did not reach a dead end so they can continue. They just need to make a fun game and keep their predatory DLC practices in check. That's all.
Super Turbo also had a great 1995 MS-DOS port (published by GameTek) that's often overlooked, probably because there weren't any decent controllers available for PC back then.
A miss step you guys might have missed is CVS2 EO. Like you guys say, it's not a bad game. But the changes they made were really not accepted, especially by the competitive scene. Came out about a full year later, on weird consoles like GC. Took out, not only RC, but any glitch that was fun
I actually grew up playing vanilla mk 3 only because I was too young in the arcades but the GameCube got midway arcade treasures 2 and it only had mk2 and 3
I had KOF 96 for the Sega Saturn and really enjoyed it, I liked the music and final boss was different which I thought was cool. I didn't notice it playing bad compared to 95, but that's just me.
Video about Tekken 4 atmosphere was done by Charlie - TheGamingBritShow. He is not into fighting games but he is a massive DMC fan and has pretty good take on games.
When I went to go see Mighty Ducks 2 in theaters, I saw a Mortal Kombat 3 arcade and it looked really cool at the time, like I mean the arcade itself was big and a sitdown, and enclosed, like an Initial D arcade or something. Also, 3 was on Saturn. The PS exclusivity was timed. I had to look it up cause I was like waitaminnit! XD
Just got to add to the people saying SSF2 on Snes and Megadrive DID have speed settings. It was great. This is literally the first time I'm hearing people complain about it.
I still love Brawl. It looked amazing, had really cool new characters, so much content and this awesome story mode but man did people I know, especially Melee fanboys, hate the shit out of it. I had fun with it for uncount hours but I will also admit that I am baffled to this day by the tripping mechanic.
I'd say mk11 was a misstep critically too, even with the gameplay changes, fans weren't a fan of the main story and ending, puts NRS in a tough position for the sequel, and the infamous grinding.
Have to disagree on one thing with Justin regarding "new characters" in MVC1; War Machine was just a reskin of Iron Man's sprite from Marvel Super Heroes. Most of his special moves were just ever-so-slightly altered from Iron Man.
The street fighter ex games running on the Sony ZN hardware in arcade. The same arcade board that’s running rivals school, star gladiator 1 & 2, battle arena toshinden 2, tech romancer & tetris the grand master.
Tekken 4 as a non competitive player was fine but my issues was visually it needed to be toned down and the English accents were awkward too. I did love the music which was a banger. Thanks too (NegroSaki--youtube remix beat maker)
I think he meant a couple weeks since their last episode. I could be wrong but I think he just said it in an odd way. If they were ending it, I feel like Matt would have said so already cause he promotes the show a lot.
Brawl also suffers from having very little reason to come back to after more recent games, smash 4 and ultimate are essentially brawl 2 and brawl 3 and if you come back to play subspace emissary today you'll eventually realize that not only it's too long it also isn't really very good because the stages have to account to you playing them with meta knight or ganondorf. When you go back to Melee you at least find a completely different feeling game that didn't get anything like it again in the industry yet, even if it it can feel clunky until you're a few matches in.
To correct y'all on SF2 and this eas stated in some interview. We all know that the CE boards were getting hacked which started the bootlegging of CE. In response Capcom made Turbo HF but Super was already in production and increasing the speed was never the plan...the real releases wasn't meant to be SF2, SF2 CE, and Super SF2. HF was happen stance again coz of the bootlegging. If you watch Hi-Score girl you notice they don't mention HF coz it was never planned.
It's funny, I have no mental concept of competative play, so the differences from MKX to MK11 barely register to me at all while I think the 'great story mode' is the enormous misstep I can't get over. Although, that said, I came in like two years later when all the DLC was out so I assume those gameplay fixes were all implemented by then.
Maybe i was a little young at the time but i enjoyed EX3. Especially beating up all the dummies during the credits lol maybe its a hindsight thing tho. Probably would have a different impression if i played today
its weird, I have the new challengers on the genesis, and it has a turbo option, on the beginning you can add turbo stars and that is why I never had that issue, not that I remember
tekken 4 put me off tekken for a looooong time. I bought the deluxe version of Tekken 7 but deleted it due to the loading times between matches lasting longer than the matches themselves. Good game..when you can play it. As a kid though, I was hooked on Ultimate MK3 on the Super Nintendo, they had a cheat to do fatalities with one button press and it just made the game feel a lot more fun.
I would consider Soulcaliber 6 a modern misstep. I've heard the series creator left BN because it flopped so hard. I was a local monster at Tekken Tag. 2001 was my senior year in high school and we had brought a ps2 to school and I cooked everyone. Freshmen to my contemporaries. And when Tekken 4 came out all of a sudden I kind of sucked. I never could understand why. In my mind I thought it was because I was getting older (lol) and it was one of the reasons I left the genre for a long time.
My opinion on missteps in fighting game’s companies: Namco: Tekken 6, SoulCalibur 4 & SoulBlade (SoulCalibur 3 & Tekken 4 are good and amazing. But tekken 6 & SoulCalibur 4 are just hd versions of the ps2 games and too safe! SoulBlade is amazing and everyone need to play it but it’s lost in time). Capcom: Street Fighter 3 New Generations & The Star Gladiator Franchise (Third Strike exists & Star Gladiator was a rival’s school prototype). Sega: Virtua Fighter 3 & Fighting Viper 2 (AM2 really fucked up against other great dreamcast fighting games). Tecmo - Dead Or Alive 6 SNK - Art Of Fighting 3 ASW - Blazblue Cross Tag Battle Midway/NRS - Mortal Kombat 3 Arika - Street Fighter EX3 (Tekken Tag released on the same day) 8ing - Bloody Roar 3
@@idioticeskimoe5149 street fighter 5 was released on a console generation that’s keep fighting games alive for years. Capcom supports it until it’s became playable. (Unlike dead or alive 6). If a misstep the arcade version of street fighter 5 is more a misstep than the console one.

It’s kinda funny that SSFII was the first title mentioned, as that’s what got me into Fighting Games in the first place. XD
Also, as for Missteps regarding story in Fighters, the two big ones for me are Tekken 6 and MK11. And DOA6 considering Honoka, who even if we get a Reboot, won’t vanish due to her popularity in Japan.
Yeah 96 really set the groundwork for KOF moving forward (running and general rushdown)
That's all.
Nice episode guys. The only thing I would say is Matt needs to turn up his mic. ✌😎👍
Super Turbo also had a great 1995 MS-DOS port (published by GameTek) that's often overlooked, probably because there weren't any decent controllers available for PC back then.
23:56 Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the Virtua Fighter 3 of Pokémon.
More like the first PS2 version of VF4. Great gameplay, rushed graphics.
39:32 Same, I too now desperately NEED a fighting game where I can play a salaryman who beats up dinosaurs with a briefcase.
I can't fuckin remember the name either but it does exist and it's based more on the Last Bronx and VF2 engine
Anarchy in the Nippon 😉 not a troll, I'm 99% sure that's what they are talking about.
A miss step you guys might have missed is CVS2 EO.
Like you guys say, it's not a bad game. But the changes they made were really not accepted, especially by the competitive scene. Came out about a full year later, on weird consoles like GC. Took out, not only RC, but any glitch that was fun
Man that manscaped ad was great!
This might be the Best Intro on RUclips. By Miles
Max!!! You're killing me!! That manscape segments hilarious if you look at max. If we could only read his thoughts there I'd probably be crying.
Funny enough I would say Tekken 6 was more of a misstep then Tekken 4.
Around 6 mins in and I don't understand. Do they don't realise Super SFII HAD the option to speed things up? At least the SNES version.
The ex series went crazy and had definitely one of the harder street fighter soundtracks around.
44:10 every fine, fancy and expensive ass wine needs years of aging to become an fine, fancy and expensive ass wine
Still sucks compared to the two inbetween, but i did love it as a kid.
32:10 technically the boss of Tekken 4 is either Heiachi or Kaz.
Tekken 4 as a non competitive player was fine but my issues was visually it needed to be toned down and the English accents were awkward too. I did love the music which was a banger. Thanks too (NegroSaki--youtube remix beat maker)
A couple episodes away from the last? Did I miss something? Does max mean for the year or are they going to be done with the show?
I'm curious about this too! Need INFORMATION!!!
I remember playing the original MK3 on arcade cabinets
40:00 it's anarchy in the nippon.
OMG GINGLE BALLS... some people are having breakfast listening to the show... >v
Great episode!
7:10 Darksydephil's ears are burning...
Phil should be a guest on here ack ack ack.
Smash Ultimate's story was fun, doesnt beat Subspace Emissary. I was really hoping they were gonna do something like it for Smash Ultimate.
The matt mcmuscles ad read is unmatched
im surprised there was no mention of kof 12
I wouldn't be surprised if they just flat out forgot that game existed.
Funny enough my local game store actually got a MK3 cabinet in their mini arcade recently
MSHvsSF was my first vs game i played so i dont think i was as hard on it.
Also probably one of if not the best soundtrack in the Marvel vs series
When max said "yea I'm done with it man." I laughed so hard , but I agree get rid of gears
Maybe i was a little young at the time but i enjoyed EX3. Especially beating up all the dummies during the credits lol maybe its a hindsight thing tho. Probably would have a different impression if i played today
Sc4 initiates the sharkjump that sc5 ends making Siegfried a Bad guy just for using the GOOD sword
its weird, I have the new challengers on the genesis, and it has a turbo option, on the beginning you can add turbo stars and that is why I never had that issue, not that I remember
tekken 4 put me off tekken for a looooong time.
The whole time I was like "when are they going to talk about Brawl" just wondering when they were going to bring up tripping.
People are laughing at Guilty Gear 2 Overture, but it really was a good game. Everyone just shits on it, because it's not a fighting game.
Awsome video keep up the great work
Arcade near me has a dark resurrection cabinet pretty fun
My opinion on missteps in fighting game’s companies:
Namco: Tekken 6, SoulCalibur 4 & SoulBlade (SoulCalibur 3 & Tekken 4 are good and amazing.
Tecmo - Dead Or Alive 6
SNK - Art Of Fighting 3
ASW - Blazblue Cross Tag Battle
Midway/NRS - Mortal Kombat 3
Arika - Street Fighter EX3 (Tekken Tag released on the same day)
8ing - Bloody Roar 3
No SF5?
@@idioticeskimoe5149 street fighter 5 was released on a console generation that’s keep fighting games alive for years. Capcom supports it until it’s became playable. (Unlike dead or alive 6).
If a misstep the arcade version of street fighter 5 is more a misstep than the console one.
