SFII: Victory has some fantastic dubs in some countries. The Brazillian dub is so recognizable that some phrases got in SFV localization. Ken used to say "ih, ó o cara, aí" (Hey, look at that guy, in English) as a way of translating "yare yare daze" or something like that. The voice actors used this line for Guile in the feature movie and in the animation movie as well.

I watched every FG related show/movie back then. There was a karaoke shop in West Covina that always had VCDs of FG movies and shows. From the same store, I got Dark Stalkers, Fatal Fury, Tekken, and Street Fighter 2 V. While they did have MK and SF USA there, I just caught those on TV.
The wild thing about KOF Destiny is that the Geese vs. Jeff Bogard fight scene steals a sequence almost shot-for-shot from the T7 Fated Retribution intro when Akuma fights Heihachi
I've liked pretty much all the FG anime I've watched for some reason or another. Maybe because I was just taking what I could get and made myself happy with it. In saying that, I will always LOVE the following: SF2 The Animated Movie, SF2 V (I still watch this series from time to time just because) and all three FF movies, especially the last two. Edit: come on, the SamSho movie was ok, in sub at least!
Matt, I think you should continue watching Virtua Fighter: The Animation, because while it is goofy, the fight scenes were actually pretty damn good and the show even explains the moves Akira does in the anime that he also does in the video games and my jaw dropped to see those moves being animated so realistically. Plus, there's a Virtua Cop reference near the end of the first Season. Yes, there are two Seasons, but the second season wasn't dubbed unfortunately.
The best part of Blood Vengeance is Jin's plan to murder one of his childhood friends and it being canon makes his return to being a good guy infinitely worse.
wow, you guys really should give Street Fighter Anime a chance, the series you skimmed a little. It have a great narrative and story, here in brazil was a BIG SHIT, hadouken music theme is greatness intended and also some really great fights at the end and ost. Lastly you can spot several akumas throughout the series pretty fun
Virtual Fighter does have a story, Kage won the tournament multiple times, the most out of anyone in the series. the corporation kidnapped and experimented on Kage’s mom and that’s how Dural was formed.
I talked about this during a video, but, the shower scenes. The incident I remember specifically was the Tekken anime, I bought it on a school field trip (it was in the adult section and I had no idea that's where I was? I just saw Kazuya and made a beeline for the box), and wanted to watch it with my parents when I got home. What I didn't noticed on the box til it was too late was the "brief nudity" warning. I tried to put it out of my mind, and then in the opening, there's Jun in her underwear. My logic was, "OH, she's wearing briefs, that's brief nudity! I'm safe!" And then a few minutes later, Anna happened. My folks made me take the movie back, and I used the refund money to buy Resident Evil figures and a shitty PSX controller. ........but not before I made a copy to a blank VHS tape--
My favorite part of the VF game lore is the canon tournament winners for the first 4 games were based off of winners of an irl tournament. From the wiki: 1: Lau 2: Akira 3: Kage 4: Kage over Shun
1:08:43 I remember Oni having a intro. It was was him coming out of a tree or something looking extremely pissed. Which, to be fair, is all what Oni does.
Heh I like McMuscles but he tends to miss remember things. In the SF US cartoon, It was never about Ken being better than Ryu. The overall point to the plot involving Ken and Akuma, was Akuma was looking for a successor. He believed Ken to be that successor because he REMINDED him of when he was younger and trained with his Brother. Unlike his Brother (who was like Ryu), He was rash and reckless and willing to take risks, which was how he came to accept and learn the "Dark Hado". He was trying to tempt Ken into doing the same thing but Ken basically rejects it, abs manages to defeat him. It was somewhat of an interested take, because it's completely opposite from the source material where Ryu is the one Akuma views as a future pupil/Rival, because like him he began to be influenced by Satsui no Hado, but like Akuma, he rejects it
I still think there should be an episode on fighting game jargon. I know the lexicon is there but the guys could do a good job getting it to sink in on meatys, oki, rekka, etc.
The Darkstalkers OVA Anime was actually not bad (its okay), the problem was that it was rushed and not much happen even though there was alot of material from the games they could have used.
Tekken Bloodline is maybe actually the best anime/cartoon adaptation of a fighting game. I really want a second season. Speaking of classics I've good memories about the Virtua Fighter one. I've not reviewed since the original tv airing, though. Finally, check the Italian Street Fighter V intro, it's hype af!
One fighting game anime that I wound up enjoying more than I thought I would is one that I'm sure no one else has ever heard of, simply because it never got licensed for English release & has even been more or less forgotten in Japan: Shinken Legend Tight Road. Never heard of that game? That's because the actual game never came out. However, a Shinken Legend fighting game was planned by publisher Zamuse, with Gust (yes, the Atelier Series people) supposedly set to develop it (it likely would have been Gust's first game as an official dev studio), but Zamuse wound up going out of business by the time the 12-episode TV anime series tie-in was ready to debut on TV in Japan, so the show wound up being promotion for absolutely nothing. However, the show itself is actually pretty enjoyable, with a solid (if standard) foundation to its plot (main character heads to island in search of how his father died, only to wind up fighting the forces of the man who killed the father in battle inside his gigantic tower), the cast is very much "a 90s fighting game" but well rounded & interesting (there's even a blatant Akuma-style "bonus boss" character who becomes the lead's rival), the music is really jazzy, the fights themselves are generally good & surprisingly grounded (there are no real projectiles being thrown about), and it has a solid ending to it. In a weird way, it's arguably one of the best fighting game anime of its era... and the fighting game it was based on never even happened!
That's not exactly accurate. His hair was blonde for the first season, but then changed to orange in the second, cuz it moved animation houses. They are not gonna reanimate the entire intro for that.
30:31 I totally agree with Matt about certain action figures back in the day that had rediculous vehicles (or variants of the actual figures) that didn't make any sense (including things that aren't video game related, like I don't remember Batman battling Two-Face or Riddler in a snow Batsuit in Batman Forever?)
Weirdly enough I was introduced to Darkstalkers thanks to the jank ass American cartoon, which I still have the full DVD box set of in my room. I wouldn't have known how amazing the fighting game series is had it not been for the American cartoon, so I'm in the line of thinking there branching out and making adaptations are always(mostly) a good way to expand your audience.
I can only think of two bad ideas for imaginary fighting game based animations: bad syndicated 90s 'Brutal: Paws of Fury' pilot which is never picked up (like the Bubsy cartoon); and also: Henry Selick directed claymation feature based on Clay Fighters, which becomes an infamous box office disaster, gains a cult following two decades later and ends up in Matt's What Happened? I crave this parallel universe already!
There is a small story in the Virtua Fighter games. Dural is Kage Maru's mom who was kidnapped after his clan was killed. Lau Chen won the first tournament, Akira won the Second, Kage Maru won the 3rd and 4th but it's unknown who won the fifth. According to Project X Zone 2 somehow Kage knows Hotsuma from Shinobi. I'm very interested in knowing more about that
Oh god recently watched King of Fighters Destiny, you could tell whoever made that were really Fatal Fury fans, and must've stuck their life savings into beating Art of Fighting since they got done so dirty in that series.
Yeah but I should point out that Art of Fighting has been a series that's more comedic than Fatal Fury (something that fans kinda forget at times) though yeah, they made Ryo and Robert TOO silly and even then, not very funny.
@dnmstarsi I'd agree there are some intentionally comedic characters but storywise I'd say it was similar seriousness to Fatal Fury, only really going down with 3 but 1 and 2 were. It's during King of Fighters where AoF Team are very comedic.
@@kingdomcomesuperman3669 Yeah. And honestly, the AOF crew is better off as a source of comedy even with their original series being a bit more serious with Mr. Big kidnapping Yuri, a young Geese Howard as commissioner and Robert's childhood friend in the 3rd game. Regardless of what I think and what SNK did with these people in and out of their series, Destiny really screwed AOF over...
Well, since we're discussing fighting games' story (or lack thereof) and how they are represented in other media: Dural is actually Kage's mother. Sure Dural's design is rather tech demo-y, but I was always enthralled by how mysterious she was as a final boss as well as the revelation of her relationship to Kage.
Whoa, nah, those Darkstalkers OVAs were AWESOME, second only to the Street Fighter II animated movie in my eyes. The only problem was that the story was rushed at the end. Definitely worth a watch to judge for yourself!
Back in like late 90's, my cable started getting the U.K. Cartoon Network and it would have ads for MK Defenders of the Realm on Fox Kids and I was like: "Aww, man". Of course, years later actually saw the quality of that show and realized I didn't miss much. Then around 2004-2005 I'd get those SF, Fatal Fury, and Tekken animes and OVAs. There was also a whole Virtua Fighter show, but I've not watched that. 19:08 Because it was to "make up" for the live action Tekken movie. Like there's a quote going like: "There was a live action movie, but please forget about that". 27:32 It kinda doesn't, though. The episodes could literally go: we fighting Lin Kuei robots (not cyborgs), then not-Baraka shows up for no reason, then Sheeva shows up for no reason, then we fight random earth elementals, the a 7-headed monster shows up and then it ends. You can find a series of videos reviewing every episode here on RUclips. 35:10 That was Quan Chi's plan in his episode.
I think i was a very VERY lucky child cuz I seen EVERYONE of these shows and movies. Via the USA network, Saturday Anime on Sci fi channel or freakin Blockbuster. And I find it weird how these guys missed them in their childhoods.
I used to love that USA Street Fighter cartoon! That entire block with Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and Savage Dragon. My favorite Fighting Game media that wasn’t a movie is Street Fighter II V.
Good thing they brought up the powerstone anime cause most forget about that. Also blazblue had their anime series that went over the first game or two iirc. Also physic force 2012 also had a 4-6 episode OVA as well.
Street Fighter 2 Victory is like X-men Evolution. Is alternative Universe where the main characters are Teenagers and the rest of the characters are adults there are mentors or villains. And as a alternate universe, is damn good.
I think fighting game shows should take notes from record of ragnorak. Basically its a show about a tournament against gods to decide the fate of humanity. Literally any fighting game could do that. Small flash backs and sick ass fights beautifully animated. Simple and clean.
I watched the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat cartoons. It was the first time I saw Cyrax and Sektor in human form. It was during the Cyber Lin Kuei episode, Cyrax was Black and Sektor was Asian just like they were later in MK9. Street Fighter even had a Final Fight episode based on the first one but with Ken and Ryu getting in the way.
Gave me a nostalgia bomb talking about Street Fighter II V. That was my Monday night viewing when I was living in Japan as it was paired with Magic Knight Rayearth from 7PM-8PM on the same Channel (SFIIV was first then MKR.) I never understood why when Manga Ent brought that over, they didn't leave the opening and ending themes/animations intact and gave us some generic Western style opening. Were they trying to sell that to a Western TV station to put it on TV or something? Or they just didn't bother buying the rights to the songs? And oh Lordy, the Samurai Showdown "Motion Picture" as it was actually anything but (more misleading advertising from AD Vision--like how they tried to sell "Ninja Resurrection" as a sequel to "Ninja Scroll.") It was a TV one-shot anime with the lowest of low budgets as you can see. There's just nothing redeemable about that, which saddens me as a huge Samurai Shodown fan. There was actually another Samurai Shodown anime--a proper OAV, but it was only a marginal improvement over the horrid TV anime.
I had the Tekken movie on VHS and watched that shit all the time. I don't know why, but my favorite line delivery is Kazuya saying, "Did my father send you?" to Nina, or Anna. I forget who, but I say that all the time, in the same voice.
That Mega Bloks then Mega Construx then just Mega is aimed at teens and above. It's NOT for lil kids due to many tiny pieces. The mini-figures are amazing in their detail and articulation, far beyond the simplistic Lego mini-figures. They're like regular action figures shrunk down to interact with brick toys. I collect the Masters of the Universe line (and have the awesome Castle Grayskull but can't afford Snake Mountain) but also have a whole bunch of the 80s and 2016 movie Ninja Turtles sets as well as mini-figures of Kratos from 2018 God of War, Hellboy, Terminator, Predator etc. They are definitely not aimed at small children but for the older collector who wants more detail and such. Most sets have 14+ for their age rating. Some of the Call of Duty guns can be disassembled with tiny magazine cartridges and such. :O
Heihachi eating an axe after catching it in his teeth is equal parts badass and hilarious.

"Why are you so upset!? Is it because your father threw you off that cliff!?"
The Juri OVA was also in that decorative 25th anniversary collection box Matt mentioned earlier.
I'd like to see an episode about concepts and mechanics. Like the guilty gear roman cancel, or Street fighter's v skills and drive impacts.
I feel like a Guilty Gear anime would be obvious at this point.
The best part of Blood Vengeance is Jin's plan to murder one of his childhood friends and it being canon makes his return to being a good guy infinitely worse.
Blood Vengeance isn't canon
That wasn't really his plan.
wow, you guys really should give Street Fighter Anime a chance, the series you skimmed a little.
I remember always seeing the Art of Fighting vhs at Suncoast but never got it
These guys have ideas that make me anxious with excitement about things that will never come too pass. :C
I'm safe!"
And then a few minutes later, Anna happened.
From the wiki:
1: Lau
2: Akira
3: Kage
4: Kage over Shun
If you're a Samurai Shodown fan, the best "adaptation" you're gonna get is the 1981 movie "Samurai Reincarnation" wich a lot of the game is based in.
These should be anime: Bloody Roar anime, bloody Roar Vs darkstalkers anime, Arthur Vs the darkstalkers, Akuma: road of evil anime.
A bloody roar anime would be awesome
Virtua fighter got an anime. Wild vision is the name of
The opening.
Matt, the Juri OVA is on the SSF4 video DVD you mentioned!
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the greatest video game movie of all time. Hands down
Facts
Honorable Mention is Fatal Fury 2. It's very underrated as it has both action and story. Also Terry being a drunk after losing to Stacheless Krauser.
@@dnmstarsi *“Mai, how BIG you’ve grown!”* 🤪
I'm so surprised u guys hadn't seen a few of these....I grew up on and loved almost all of these😂😂😂
The Darkstalkers OVA Anime was actually not bad (its okay), the problem was that it was rushed and not much happen even though there was alot of material from the games they could have used.
You guys left out the most hilarious tidbit about the street fighter cartoon. In the intro ken. Is blonde but when show is airing he's a redhead lol
That's not exactly accurate. His hair was blonde for the first season, but then changed to orange in the second, cuz it moved animation houses. They are not gonna reanimate the entire intro for that.
I'm putting a button on my Stream Deck that triggers a video clip of Matt yelling "VA-VA-VOOOOOM"
The music choice in the Tekken ova was MINT. I watched pretty much every fighting game ova but Fatal Fury will always be my favorites
I just noticed Matt wearing the super eyepatch wolf beanie. I see you
Weirdly enough I was introduced to Darkstalkers thanks to the jank ass American cartoon, which I still have the full DVD box set of in my room. I wouldn't have known how amazing the fighting game series is had it not been for the American cartoon, so I'm in the line of thinking there branching out and making adaptations are always(mostly) a good way to expand your audience.
Honestly, I wish they had just discussed video game cartoons and anime in general cause I like this
Also, if anyone IS interested, you can find the Street Fighter 2 V series all here on youtube.
Anna Williams also had a shower scene in Tekken animated movie. lmao.
remember street fighter stupidity? Matt never gets the credit he deserves for bringing Bison's iconic "YES!" to the light
I'm very interested in knowing more about that
Now more than ever we need a Ballz anime adaptation.
Oh god recently watched King of Fighters Destiny, you could tell whoever made that were really Fatal Fury fans, and must've stuck their life savings into beating Art of Fighting since they got done so dirty in that series.
You're right, they really didn't like AoF and made Ryo a jobber. Him and Robert are nothing more than a joke in the show.
@dnmstarsi Personally disagree because ever since they've taken the more comedic route the character development for the AoF Team has been on hold.
Huh. No mention of the recent Mortal Kombat animated movies or Blazblue: Alter Memory
Yeah, I loved the Darkstalkers anime and mangas.
Yo man
Back in like late 90's, my cable started getting the U.K.
I think they should've talked about Hi-Score Girl at least a little bit
Not sure if it counts.
Maybe on an appearances and references episode? Throw "Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games" and "Yokai Girls" in there as well
Wow really, no mentioned about Mortal Kombat Legends movie??? That was the most recent animated stuff come from Mortal Kombat franchise
I used to love that USA Street Fighter cartoon! That entire block with Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and Savage Dragon. My favorite Fighting Game media that wasn’t a movie is Street Fighter II V.
King of Fighters Destiny and Virtua Fighter were my favorites! There a KOF CGI animated movie coming soon.
The Darkstalkers US show might be one of the biggest animated shitshows ever
For those who dont know that Clancy Brown played Raiden, now you can say Raiden has been portayed by both the Highlander AND the Kurgan
Is that Max Steel looking dude in the thumbnail meant to be Terry???
Still a delightful and soothing moment to listen to you guys ! Power of nostalgia is huge ! 🤣😇
It's a shame BlazBlue Alter Memory wasn't even mentioned...
Patrick Seitz did his best to gather most of the Game's VAs!
Good thing they brought up the powerstone anime cause most forget about that. Also blazblue had their anime series that went over the first game or two iirc. Also physic force 2012 also had a 4-6 episode OVA as well.
The BlazBlue anime cover the first two games.
Dudes, Virtua Fighter absolutely has an anime.
Street Fighter 2 Victory is like X-men Evolution. Is alternative Universe where the main characters are Teenagers and the rest of the characters are adults there are mentors or villains. And as a alternate universe, is damn good.
Oh boy. I saw that Tekken anime back in the day on VHS.
Amazing these guys didn’t know of SF and DS USA cartoons. I’m in the same age range and very much remember them, even the commercials and toys
I think fighting game shows should take notes from record of ragnorak. Basically its a show about a tournament against gods to decide the fate of humanity. Literally any fighting game could do that. Small flash backs and sick ass fights beautifully animated. Simple and clean.
I really need to check that anime out, I've heard good things about it
@@El-Burrito people complain cause its more dbz action then Naruto. More flashy scenes and punching hard then conveying movement and weird abilities.
Mr. Big, what a chefs kiss of perfection for a name
The Advanced Variable Geo OVA is probably the most accurate representation of it's fighting game. It's an...interesting watch. 🤨
Except in the cartoon Cyrax was the Asian and Sektor was Black. They changed it for MK9.
@@sebastiancintron29 Oh okay. I had it backwards because I haven't seen it in years. lol
The Battle Arena Toshinden one made Eiji’s super move look so much cooler
