- This video is about Amazon Alexa Messaging. I will show you what I discovered about it and why I think it could be useful. Alexa Messaging allows you to send voicemails and text at the same time to both your phone and your echo devices. That can be useful in certain situations.

Thanks for this weeks Alexa video. As a relatively new Alexa user, I look forward to these every week now. I’ve been trying to decide if messaging would be useful for me and my family too. I’ve been thinking of getting my daughter (11 y/o) her own dot. I’d like to be able to leave a message for her specifically vs my wife who would probably listen to the message on the dot in the kitchen. It would be nice if amazon would allow a way to create a “message box” for specific members of the household.
Hello ChannelMgr Mark. Thank you for your question. I am glad that you are enjoying the videos every week.
You might be in luck on this one. I discovered the answer to this the other day. You can setup voice profiles for each member of the house. Once you do that, if you send a message to a member of the household. When they say, "Alexa play my messages", it will only play the messages of the person asking.
To setup voice profiles. You have to have a family member download the Alexa app. Log in as the user who setup the echos. But, choose the option of being someone else. This will establish their own profile. Under settings, you then go to Your Voice and setup the voice.
Since doing that, when I ask for messages it will only play messages for Craig. When my wife ask she only gets option for her messages. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions about it, please let me know.

Is there a way to make it so only the Alexa receiving the message gets the notification? They all go off when I try to send to only one device.

I’m trying to set this up with my neighbor so I can vidoe call during covid times. It’s not working and I’m getting very frustrated, everything everyone is saying to do doesn’t work
I went to send a message and their contact isn’t there and there’s no option to add it

Hi can you leave a message for a family member and when they arrive home be given that message ..ie Alexa when mum is home let her know I am at school club.
Hello fittermet, If you have multiple profiles setup through the Alexa app and each person is login on there own profile in the app on there phone, you can send a message to that particular family member. If you only have one profile, the prime members account that is logged in, you can still send a message. You can send a message to the owner of the echo through the Alexa app or using your voice with the echo to send a message to the owner of the app. Once a message is sent with voice or text through the app or echo, it will notify the person on the app on their mobile device. It will also give a notification of a pulsing yellow light on the echos. For example, I went in the app and sent myself a message using text. Now my echos are pulsing yellow. If I ask Alexa to play my messages it will give me the message I sent through the app. I hope that makes sense.
Quick answer, messages will show up as a pulsing yellow light on the echos. You then have to ask Alexa what are my messages to hear it. I hope that helps. thank you for your question and for watching. Have a great day.
what about sending messages in non English language? my mom is not good at English but she can say "Send Message to 'Insert My Name'" and send actual message in our native language.
Hello Apoorv. Thank you for your question. I think it would be useful with other languages because it creates a recording of the persons voice. So even if it is not transcribed you still have the actual recording.
To put it to the test, I used english to say "Alexa, message Craig." Then I continued with some of my very poor High School Spanish. I was actually surprised that Alexa had transcribed the Spanish I was speaking correctly. I was not able to find what languages it will transcribe.

I also tested with one of the Indian language. Transcription was heywire but I got the recording.
Hello Apoorv. Thank you for the follow up. So Indian is not a supported transcription language at this point. But the recording works. Would that work for messages from your mom or were you looking for the transcription too?
No I was not looking for transcription. Alexa to Alexa calling was enabled in India a week ago. And Amazon sold millions of echo last Christmas. So your video just became relevant in India. No Indian tech youtuber has made video on Alexa calling. Still Alexa is not enabled on Fire TV in India. So waiting for that release from Amazon.
Very cool. So this could be a good option for you. Glad to hear that they opened up Alexa to Alexa calling in India. They did sell a lot of them during Christmas. That might explain the surge I have seen in my Alexa intercom video.
I am glad that I am able to provide some helpful content for new features. One of my first reviews did well because it was on a new camera that came out in India before festival season. Most of my views on that video were from India.
Hopefully they open up more of the features. It’s kind of a pain knowing a feature works in certain areas.

My contacts aren’t showing up when I go to message
I want to send a message to a particular spot in my daughters home.. Alexa...send a message to Alex's room at Erin's home. "did you get the present I mailed to you?" and can my grandchild respond?
You can ask Alexa to “drop in” on the name of the echo that you want to connect to. Then there will be a direct connection between the two echoes. Your grandchild would be able to respond and you could talk back-and-forth.

Unlike free phone calls via Alexa...sms texts are charged to your phone. Not free!
Alexa messaging is not an SMS text. They are direct messages from the echo to the Alexa App. You can use 3rd party skills to send SMS text. But this was not about those skills. Did you watch the video before your “Not Free!” Comment?
