    Every time I am looking for a solution to my Alexa, I eventually land on one of your videos and finding the answer. I need to come straight to your page from now on and save myself time! Thank you. The Wait feature was exactly what I was after. I need the power to come on a smart plug, then wait a sec before the smart IR turns on the tv. Brilliant. You’ve been amazing as usual.

      Hello Raider4life131, that is right. I had not thought about that until you mention it. I always think about the way in the future Star Trek stuff. It was a cool idea of having a computer that could control your house. Now we are starting to live in that future. I love all this cool stuff that is connecting together. What took us so long to make the vision of the 80's happen? :) I can't wait to see where we are 5 years from now. This stuff is moving fast now. Thanks for pointing out Back to the Future II. That is a fun throw back. Have a great day buddy.

    Love the idea of building routines but still need a way to continue music across devices, so you can start something in one room and carry on listening in another. Plus you need to be able to set and check timers/reminders across all devices - so you don't have to be in the same room that you set a timer or reminder to hear it. Maybe an option to say 'set a timer for 5 mins downstairs/everywhere'.
    Sometimes I wonder if Amazon think about people with multiple Echoes...
    Keep up the great work, Craig!

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Chris, Thank you very much. I am glad that you enjoyed the video. A lot of people, including myself, are looking for those features. Both are annoying limitations. With as many changes and updates that Amazon makes, I think it may come down more to the way they have created their devices. I don't know the specifics of how it works, but I think the connection process they have gone with is limited the functionality. I think they want all the devices to be connected at times, but also completely separate. That way multiple users can use multiple echos without any overlap. My theory is that they painted themselves into a corner with their architecture. I may be off, I just can't see them not implementing what seems so simple, unless they can't.
      Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I do hope they figure it out. Those would probably be the two things I see the most comments on. Have a great weekend.

    Hi Craig and thanks from the UK, I am 73 and my first Echo Dot was a god send as I am now disabled through some deliberating lung disease, (Asbestos?) but your video explained very clearly how to use the routine function, of which I was scared of touching, Electrics and mechanics are fine but technology Wow?????????? I have now subscribed to your channel and although you have different systems in the USA, it was a most informative description. Its December 2019 so wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and A happy New Year. I am now thinking ahead and maybe I will control my Lionel Trains with simple on/off functions?

    Thank you. I did not know you could do so much with Alexa routines. When you set it to have music come on is there a way to set the volume level or is it only able to come on with the last volume setting? Also can you select music to come on all alexa devices or select several? I only seem to have the option to select one alexa device?
    Also why do you call it the three lines at the top. Other Podcasters I listen to call it the hamburger. 😆

    Not sure what I'd use stop for. But wait i use to turn off plugs on my surge protectors when my devices are charging. I find out how long they need to charge, then i set the timer to shut off the plug after that time. This is to keep my devices from overcharging and hopefully extend the life of the batteries. I also have a camera in my room. I tell Alexa to turn it off went I'm in my room, it is set to turn it back on in 1 hr after i tell it to turn off.

    Hi Craig, Nice video again. I already use the timer function (as in your example, on the ‘Good morning’ routine). Very usefull. Props for Amazon.
    What I am missing, is a possibility to add a second Echo to an already playing Echo. (Yes, they already are in a group, so can play music together). In this case I would like to simultaniously combine them while one of them is already playing music.

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Ruud, thank you very much. That is great that you are putting the timer function into use. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find away to continue a song or playlist on a group once it has begun on another echo. It is a pain that you have to start a song over with a new request. I do hope they come up with an add function to music while it is playing. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

    Craig what a great set of videos on the routines but can i pick your brains please. In our bedroom we have an Alexa Show 5 which is on my side of the bed and my wife has the Dot 3 on her side of the bed and we use them as alarm clocks as we get up at different times. I have set up on my Show 5 a routine thats turns on different lights around the house when i dismiss the alarm and then turns the lights off after an hour. The problem is when my wife tries to use the same routine on her Dot 5, nothing happens. Ideally we would like it to be so i can set up a routine for me, and a different routine for her. Do you have any suggestions.

    Hi Craig! Which routines do you actually use in day to day life?

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Craig and Sakia, To be honest, I do not have any regular Echo routines that I do at the moment. My lights have all been programmed since summer of 2017 through the Philips Hue app. That was before I started this channel and was exposed to the Echos. The regular routines I have are at 5:30a 3 lights come on at 50% in my living room. They shut off automatically at 8:00am. At 3:30p one light comes on as the sun shifts and causes my living room to get a little dark. Then at sunset the rest of the lights in the living room come on and automatically shut off at 11pm. My thermostat is programmed to its schedule. My Ring doorbell does its thing. For my office, I have a Philips motion sensor that starts paying attention after 4pm. Then if I walk in the room after 4, the lights come on and stay on for 30 minutes. Most of the other functions in my office are done with voice.
      I have not programmed any morning routines for my echos to avoid waking my wife up. I do wish I had a coffee maker that I could get to heat up when I get up. If I did not have the Hue bulbs already programmed, I would do the same thing through the echos now that they have the wait feature. I think there are viewers that seem to work the routine feature far more than I do. With working on videos, at times I feel like I am learning about new things more then implementing them. Thanks for the question and for watching this video. Have a great day.

    Hi Craig,
    Great tutorial. I also ran into the "no music before a wait" restriction. In my case I wanted a complex single routine that performed several actions 5 minutes apart... but wanted music playing during the whole routine
    My only solution was a separate routine that started at the same time playing music

      Hello Petgirl, You are welcome and thank you very much. I would suggest getting the third generation Dot. With holiday pricing it is such a great deal and sounds so good for size. You can buy two of them for the price of an echo. If you’re using a streaming music service that is supported you compare the two Dots up for stereo speakers or multi room audio so both Dots play the same thing. The 3rd gen dot is my choice for most bang for your buck device. I think your dogs would be happy with the sound of their music. I was really impressed with the volume it produced compared to the previous generation echo. Thank you for watching and for your question. I hope this helps. Have a great day.

    Hi Craig, I recently bought the 10" Echo show. It is a great product & responds to everything that I ask or need. One small problem, when I swipe down the screen to display Home, Alarms, Lights & More, Routines, then select Lights & More, whilst it displays all of the available lights together with the On/Off icons, the lights which are currently ON are not represented by the On icons being white. All On/Off icons are black. However, on my phone, the same display gives a clear indication of which lights are On & which ones are Off.
    Kind regards, Paul Jones.

      You can tell what version of software you have by going into the Alexa app under device settings. If you do not have the most recent version listed here, you can get it to do an update. To do an update you have to mute the device, power it off for 30 seconds, powered on and leave it muted. Then leave it for up to two hours. It can take from 30 minutes to two hours to do an update. The echos usually update themselves when there is no activity. So leaving it muted gives it a chance to see there is no activity and look for an update. There is no app option to start an update. Once echos are updated with the latest software, all the generations have the same basic features. I do have a comparison video that shows the sound difference between the most recent dot, the previous and the standard echo. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question. Have a great day.

      It is my understanding that the 3rd generation dot has far superior sound quality to the 2nd generation DOT though, and that's not just software - but that actual device itself has enhanced sound performance. It's currently on sale for like $25 or something - so definitely consider it if you like to listen to music on it as well. :) Happy Holidays!

    Great video. I have a question. I have Echo dot and Lifx lights. Do you know how can I create a routine that turn on the lights effects? Like candles, strobe, etc.
    Thanks

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад

      Hello Eric, thank you very much. I think your only way of doing that is if you can create a scene in the Lifx app. Then it should show up as a scene that could be triggered by a routine. I would have to try this on my Hue bulbs. Thank you for the question and for watching. Have a great day.

    As usual great video. I don’t know if anyone has noticed this, but my routines don’t run the actions in order. In one routine I would turn Off all the lights in the house bases on groups. My daughter and son bedroom lights are in two of the groups. I would then turn on the bathroom light, and the kids lights. Sometimes the kids Lights would turn on, but then turn off. I assume the lights off actions ran last. I had to take the kids lights out of the groups so the would just turn on. I still want the kids lights in their respective groups, but can’t. This would make the stops and waits out of sync. Any ideas.

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад

      Hello Bradley, that is interesting. I had not heard about that. I wonder if there is a software bug with groups that might be updated with an app update. It is a pain, but the devices could be triggered individually. Not very convenient. I hope they fix it. I will have to look into this and try it. Thank you for sharing this and watching. Have a great day.

    It would be good to have more triggers in the routines - like light switch or better security turning off triggers some lights on and vice versa.

    Great video! I wonder if a routine can also be triggered by a smart device? E.g. the Philips Hue Starter set comes with a motion sensor. I would like the lights in my hallway to turn on when it "sees" anything. But say like 5 minutes after the last detected motion, i would like the lights to turn off. Could I do that with these routines?

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Krijn, I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately you are not able to do that. I too have a motion sensor and would love to do that. When you choose what to start the routine with, you get scheduled, voice, device or echo button. The device for triggering that shows up is my front door ring video doorbell. Then it will trigger a routine with motion or a doorbell ring. Hopefully, other devices such as other cameras or motion sensors will be implemented. Thank you for watching. Have a great day.

    Can you make Alexa turn on devices in a sequence? Like one thing before another? Like "wait" but with one second or less pause

  • @tomkopke6795
    @tomkopke6795 2 года назад

    Would love to one routine stop another without disabling it. Of I add stop routine as a customized action, it disables . It appears the only way to stop another routine from within a routine is to use "pause" but Alexa rambles on about the paused routine instead of simply saying "ok."

      Hello Edwin, thank you very much. I am glad that I can help. It is so nice that they do keep improving features every day. That is nice that you are up to 12 devices. Other than the Plus, you have them all covered. That is a nice collection of echos. I only watched the beginning of this video. But, apparently you can try opening up the developer options to work around downloading the Vudu app along with other apps. Maybe this will help you. ruclips.net/video/mmZZFP5jNk4/видео.html

    I am looking for some Info I cant seem to find. If my echo is set to turn the lights on say at 6pm and off at 11pm. Which I have set up and all seems to be fine. But I was wondering, if I go on holiday, say to a different country how do I set the routine to run at the time it was originally set rather than the holiday country time. Do I need to change anything.

    Hi Craig, love the videos, I’m trying to write a routine that will act as a panic alarm... I have created a group of all my light control modules, so I can “light up the house” inside and out. and I can send a text announcement notification “Get Out of my House, I have called the police” to all of my Dots... now I’m stuck trying to play an alert siren on all my Echo Dots... I found a siren on Amazon Music, added it to a playlist, and I can send it to one(1) Dot as part of the Routine, however I can’t seem to send it to my multi room speaker group made up of 7 Echo Dots ? Also I would like to force the volume to maximum on all devices. Any thoughts??

    When turning lights on or off is there a way to voice set a timer.
    So "Kitchen lights off in five minutes"
    I guess we could set up a routine with a wait but it would be good to have a voice set timer like we have with alarms

      From what I found there is still no way to ask for a smart device for a period of time. They have implemented asking for a specific time on music. Hopefully that means it is coming to smart devices.

    There is one thing I have requested via feedback on the Alexa App. The conditional settings. Routines to toggle a light. Turn it on IF it is off, or Turn it off IF it is on. Why this instead of creating two separate routines, one to turn it on and another to turn it off??? Well, using Amazon buttons to toggle lights ON and OFF. As of now, buttons can do one straight set of things, and Amazon buttons are greatly cheap, they use regular AAA batteries (not complicated hard-to-find batts). Just buy any Echo device, pair them and you are good to go! I got 2 buttons on Black Friday for $15, a steal!

    • @CraigsTechTalk
      @CraigsTechTalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Marcus, it would be nice. to have the conditional IF setting. I like that idea. The addition of the Echo Buttons to routines is a cool option. It does offer a physical way of interacting that does not require your voice. I appreciate you sharing this for others too. They price is great for them right now. Thanks for watching Marcus. Have a great day.

    I’ve got this problem with my Alexa account where it keeps showimg multiples of each smart device I have every now and then and it’s driving me mad as my echoes keep then saying I have more than one device with that name 🥵

      Hello Tom, thank you very much. I am glad that you are enjoying it. I am sorry to hear that you are having multiples showing up. That is odd. I would suggest deleting each of the devices you are seeing multiples off. Then go to the plus sign and choose add a device. It should discover the devices again and hopefully show only one of each device. If that doesn't work, I would probably uninstall the app and reinstall. Maybe that would reset it. Hopefully one of those options would help. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

      You could write a routine that is triggered by the sensor being left open. You may have to play with the timing if you are able to do it. You might have to add a wait step before the alert is sent.

    Alexa needs these 6 major improvements to routines:
    1) ability to use Alexa skills in routines
    2) ability to set up multiple triggers. Both and/ or
    3) ability to set questions in routines. If I say turn on Bedroom light, I should be able to have it ask me what brightness
    4) ability to add timers to routines
    5) ability to set the same keywords for different devices. I should be able to set 'turn on lights' to every room that has an Alexa device to turn on its lights
    6) ability to have every device respond with the alexa says
