Update on Location as Alexa Trigger: It does Not Work!
You do a great job explaining how to use this Location as a trigger feature. Anyone who has Ring cameras is aware that they cannot trigger the armed or disarmed mode based on their location or geofence, which only sends a reminder. This is a huge disappointment and concern expressed by users on message boards. I figured out a work around using the Location, Arrive or Leave as a trigger to Arm or Disarm Ring basically by using those words in a Custom command and creating the Arm my Ring routine on my mobile phone like this: when this device Leaves home, Alexa Arm Ring. Create a second routine: when this device Arrives home, Alexa Disarm Ring 1, 2, 3, 4 . Using your access code. You might try this and if you like it you could demo on your video.

Well described. Works perfect for simple routines but i haven't been able to create one that works to open / close garage door as i Arrive/leave home. Any tips?
Hey Craig, love your videos great work. Since you posted this video I guess location based trigger is now not available on Alexa app anymore, is there an alternative to that as love to start devices at my home before I arrive.
Hell yes! I've been waiting for this for so long, since Cortana had this for years and after Microsoft basically stopped working on Windows Phone, I was left without this feature. So glad to have this back.
Thanks for the geofencing routine. This is nice however how can I set up a routine to perform thermostat setback and return (home/away) mode to geofence two iphones so that setback occurs only when both are away and return to normal (home) occurs when either one returns? Thanks.

I have a second home that I also want to install Alexa. Can I have a second home on one Alexa account? I want to add smart bulbs and a couple of Wyze cams. Just to keep a eye out on the place when I’m not their. Or would I have to make a separate account for that home? Thank you in advance for any assistance....
Craig - thanks for this video. I am having so much trouble with location based routines. I made sure that the Location option is set to Always in the Alexa app, location services are on my phone, I entered a Home address which I use as the location, and I even used a certain time range because if I leave home during the day, I don't need the lights going on. I have two for leaving and I have two for coming home - all based on time and lights, etc. I even rewrote all four of them after deleting my first go which actually did work for a while. Ideas? It's driving me crazy. Thanks!

Thank you for this information. I will use location routines and reminders. I actually set up a routine to turn on my livingroom light around dusk. Not sure how to tell it to turn off at certain time
Hi. Can you tell me if I'm able through Alex's Routines to handle Xiaomi Sensor Door and Sonoff Light Switch? When I open the door (Sensor Door) it will turn on the Light (Sonoff switch)

Hey Craig , Big Fan . I wanted to let you know , On this app it does not give you the arrive of leave option in routines . Do you know if they got rid of that . I want to have my furnace and lights come on when I am heading home , Thanks
When will the Alexa house guard function be available in the UK? Sometimes my Echo Dot lights up (continuous circle of light) on its own Why and how do you stop this? This is my first time I have asked a question? I like your talks, very informative
Thank you David. I appreciate you watching. I have no idea when it would be coming to the UK. Amazon does not give any indication when things are coming out before it is announced. If you the light continuously circles it maybe trying to reconnect to your echo. The only time I see that is when I power mine on and then it starts looking to connect to wifi. I would restart it and if it is the same circling of light it is probably losing connection or restarting itself. My guess is WiFi. Thanks for watching.
Location based routines would be great. Very frustrating not available in UK. Why does amazon limit stuff to US?
As of February 2019 locations services only works sometimes and goes off without any movement of the device, which makes it totally useless for me. It really got annoying when in the middle of the night Alexa notified my wife that I was arriving home and I was already asleep next to her for the last four hours.
Can you set this up for someone who’s not on your Amazon account?? Say my roommate and I go grocery shopping on Tuesdays after he gets off work. He’s not on my Amazon account, he has the Alexa app signed in under his account on an iPhone 12 Pro. How can I have Alexa to announce the roommate is home on Tuesdays, so when he arrives or gets close to home I can meet him in the driveway… and how would I set it up when he’s not on my account??
I like the simple tips and tricks with both the Echo and GHM. As neither comes with a lot of info on things either device does. I didn't realize the voice to text feature on the Echo only works to send to Android users. How are people to know what phones their contacts use.

Discovered roborock vacuum with Alexa can only start or stop in the middle of the room with Alexa. Can't return to base early or fined device with Alexa. But works on hey google.
Don't feel bad. Here in Canada, we don't have it either! (And we're ATTACHED to the U.S.!)
It's not available in the UK yet, I went into settings and there are no locations, let's hope we get it soon. Keep up the good work!
Nearly a year on and England does not have this feature unless i am missing something. I am disappointed we do not have it yet it would come in handy.
When I go under settings, I don’t see “Your Location “ or “Add your Location”
My problem is it seems like you have to have the app open in order for the location based routines to work. I don't like that. How can I get them to work without opening the app?
I tried this but the Arrive/Leave button is missing. If you are in the Uk this is because of EU privacy laws that prevent us using Geofencing.. Only a week left of this madness though .
I have a reminder to take my medication , right now it shows on my wifes phone also, she hates it, if she sets up a voice profile. Will it only show up on my phone?
IFTTT doesn’t enable geofencing in Australia either !!

Hey Craig..for some reason I can't use location based routines as I can't see that option on my Amazon echo dot 3rd generation in india
I have a Note 9 and tried setting up my home device to announce I would be home in 10 minutes after I left the blue geofence I put around my work, but I asked my babysitter when I got home if Alexa said anything andy sitter said no. I had location on and turned up and Bluetooth was also on. I don't know what I can do to make it work for sure. Suggestions?
Hello Tim, sorry to hear that it didn’t work for you. It sounds like you have it set up right. I’ve heard from others that this is not been working consistently. It sounds like it something that Amazon needs to fix on their end. I wish I had a better answer. Other than trying to erase it and trying to re-write the routine to see if that makes a difference. I don’t think it will but I don’t know what else to try. If your phone is sharing your location with the Alexa app it should be working. Thank you for watching. My Alexa App doesn't show "Your Locations", I check in iOS settings, it is configured to always use phone location. I clicked on Individual devices to setup my home location. But I dont see "Location based routines or reminders"!!! Alexa App is upto date (iphone X).
I'm hoping it will work with my echo buds assuming they go on sale in a few days.
Hello, most echo features do work with the buds. I have not seen any sales on the Echo buds listed yet. I have a Black Friday video coming out tomorrow and could not find any mention of them going on sale. Hopefully they do. Thanks for watching.
But you didn't show what kind of reminder you got on your phone is there a sound does it play is it get sent to the Alexa app
I’m on a mission to find and get an Alexa compatible garage door opener or at least a controller for the one I have . It would be nice to have the garage door open automatically when it arrive home at night. Thanks Craig. And Merry Christmas.
A diy if you can do simple soldering. Search Amazon for "MHCOZY WiFi Wireless Smart Switch Relay Module" for the switch and check RUclips. It's not perfect but it's cheap and easy.

Craig's Tech Talk I did see that, the price tag was a little high. But I having second thoughts about the project, need to do some research . I keep a echo gen 2 in my garage , what would stop someone yelling through the door to Alexa to open the gerage door. I would have to give it a silly name or something.
Are there any security risks with these features?
I'm in Australia, and using echo dot 3. My Amazon app does not have the arrive/leave option in routines nor does it have location option in reminders.

How can I add multiple people in my household? I can add myself off course and my wife but I can figure out how to add my daughters. This way when someone come home based on the geofencing to turn on & off lights.

I have tried this so many times, to try to turn the light on when I return home, but it has never worked. Yet other times, I didn't leave the house, but the light automatically turns on. Frustrating!
I tried to add home and work location, it kept on saying “Sorry we r unable to add location, please try again”. I reset the apps and everything and still didn’t work. I even set it to always on location.
How many times does Alexa repeat the same reminder??

I was using a geofencing sort of setup so that my lights would turn on in my living room and kitchen as I came into view of my home. the problem is my lights were turning themselves either off or on randomly. This would also occur at about 1:30 to 2 in the morning. I noticed that it was only the lights that were set to turn on with this routine. I disabled the routine and it has not happened since.
I suspect that my internet connection would go out for a Time and when it came back on it would figure oh look Alan's home and turn the lights on. Or perhaps my phone would lose its GPS connection and when it picks it up again the same thing would happen. My phone for what it's worth is an Android on boost Mobile and my internet is through spectrum in Central Florida.
Technical support was not able to help me figure this out. These little glitches aside. I love my echo (Gen 3) dots.
Hello Alan, thank you for sharing your experience. That is odd and pretty annoying. I bet it was quite a shock the first time it went off at 1:30 in the morning. I can see it being an issue possibly with the phone service or GPS. This Geo fencing still seems to need some work. I think they’re going to need a feature that allows Geo fencing to only work between certain time periods. For example between 3 and 8 PM. That way you don’t get any shocks in the middle of the night with lights coming. Glad to hear that the Echo Dot is working well for you. It is a nice little device. Thanks for checking out the video. I would like to be able to touch on which Alexa devices are used (play music, say a custom message) in the setting so you can have all of your devices be triggered on one routine. As far as I can tell, you have to make a duplicate routine for each Alexa device you want to trigger instead of doing it all on one routine.

Doesn't work in the UK, not available.
The number one use of Alexa LOCATION routine functionality is to open your garage door and to close your garage door.
The problem is the plethora of devices that are not compatible with the Alexa functionality, even though the manufacturers say they are 'Alexa compatible'... that is a bit of a non-truth.
Meoss or Meross for example. They both make a device that has door sensors to detect when the garage door is open and it does work outside of Alexa, but it does NOT work with the LOCATION functionality in Alexa.
Hi I really need help I just installed Alexa downloaded the app had some issues but now have it working the problem is the app and amazon have my address but Alexa claims not to have it ,please can u suggest what to do ,I have looked on amazon for help 😫thank you
Hello Bev, I would go under settings in the app and look for the location option and verify it is there. The other place to look is under the device tab on the Alexa app home screen, select echos and then select your echo. Verify the location is correct for the device. Those are the only two places that I can think of that it may be missing your address.

Unfortunately not.
How do I get it to warn me if there is a flood on the route I like to take home?
I don’t know. You probably can’t. It is not going to give you warnings about traffic conditions.

Shame that Alexa still thinks that at my location here in the southern hemisphere winter solstice is in December 😳 (and summer in June...yes..🙄) How did that happen?
Hello skki, the location uses the address on your Amazon Account. You should be able to change it in device settings. I had a device that showed up preregistered with an address I had not used in 5 plus years. I changed it and it was good to go. I was surprised to see that address show up. I have the right address on my amazon account. The location is the correct one for all my devices and it still thinks summer in New South Wales is in June. Maybe it thinks Australia is Austria. I'll live but it seems a major flaw to me.@@CraigsTechTalk

This feature was demonstrated using the Echo Auto during Amazon’s surprise event. Amazon by the way has started to ship the device to some people who requested the invitation back in September. I can’t wait to get mine.

Their probably rolling the update out meaning it won't get to everyone at the same time. Some people will see it later.
I think for those of us who STILL can’t access location-based features, IFTTT can do this job instead.
Another feature that will be more useful when Echo lets you base routines on sunrise and sunset. I’d love to have Echo turn my porch light on if I get home after sunset.

Or check if you can already do the in the garage app. As far I can remember, some smart garages have geofencing.
If you find the surprise event video Amazon did back in September when they announced all of the new devices, that was one of the things they demonstrated when using the Echo Auto and location based routines. They have started shipping the Echo Auto out to some of the people who requested the invitation price. I keep checking my email patiently waiting till I get the go ahead to purchase it.
For those sad that it isn't available in UK yet. Don't worry, it doesn't work in the US yet either. We're just a bunch of testes right now.
Even more updates for US but still nothing for UK. No Apple Music as yet either, complete waste of time Amazon in UK.
