  • [Ep1] The Porsche Cayman GT4 I bought sight unseen from Copart salvage auction just showed up and we got LUCKY!
    After bidding over $50,000 on a wrecked and totaled version "best Porsche ever made" I had no idea what we were going to get... BUT, based on the modifications (and a few other not so subtle clues) it looks like we may have got someone's ex-racetrack toy!
    This GT4 rebuild is going to be moving FAST so be sure to subscribe and follow the entire build!

    997 TURBO UPDATE - We're waiting on a few VERY special & rare parts to come in and the minute they do, it's time to get out the saw, cut it up a bit and send here to the boys at Industry Garage for paint! Trust me when I say I wish things were moving faster, but it quickly snowballed into a FULL top to bottom build! I have no doubt the finished product will be worth the wait and I can't wait to share it with all of you!
    Oh, and we have something absolutely epic in the works this GT4 (and another shop car!) for the entire fall season 😈

    I bought a salvage 718 Cayman S from IAAI with almost the same damage your GT4 has in the front and fixed it myself. Note both have the same inner body panels. Most of the front inner body panels are glued and riveted . No need to buy Porsche’s overpriced rivets or rivet gun. As for the parts, Porsche will sell you fenders, hoods, bumpers, however you have to be a certified Porsche body shop to buy the inner panels as the dealer couldn’t even get them for me. I had to buy from Europe and get shipped. Hope you have better luck. I have plenty of pictures I can send if you want which may save you some time as well as some names of a few European Porsche parts sites. Lmk. Note I’m not too far from your shop as well if you want to see mine.
    Btw, Great videos, keep making ‘em.

    • @philipparana9225
      @philipparana9225 Год назад +1

      Wondering how you set up the panels without a jig? Yeah ppl don't realize how hard it is to get parts for these

    • @nielsjohnson7748
      @nielsjohnson7748 Год назад +4

      @@philipparana9225 So my frame rails were straight, so that made the panel alignment process easier. Once I removed the damaged panels (inner trunk panel, front panel, top frame (top collar), inner support (triangle piece)), I clamped the new ones on. Since the damage was limited to the very front, I was able to align the top panel (collar) to the original mounting spots closer to the cabin. Then I mounted the fender, hood and bumper to check for alignment, which in my case did not require any changes to my clamped pieces. Lastly, I'm pretty mechanical, but had never done this level of body work before, so I watch a lot of youTube Videos. Since most of the inner structure is identical to the 991/911 (same part numbers), I actually learned from watching many of the 911 rebuilds, as there were no Shop manual available for the 982/718 Caymans.

      Niels, this is a longshot… but I suppose there can’t be many of us rebuilding these cars.
      Is your username on the 718 forum backyardmechanic? If so, I have AC questions for you 😅

    • @nielsjohnson7748
      @nielsjohnson7748 Год назад +2

      @@scraplifegarage Yes, that was me. The AC was a real PITA. So one of my AC lines was kinked, but held pressure. I believe the key to a simple fix if your system is still holding pressure and you need to replace an AC line, is don't start it after you remove the lines, or it will trigger a compressor reset. I actually pulled my damaged line off, then started it to move it around, which triggered the AC compressor run-in/reset. Big mistake. So later when I replaced the line and I tried to evacuate it and fill it, I could never get the compressor to start. I tried resetting the codes using my cheap iCarSoft OBD2 Por-III scanner, but could never figure out how to get the compressor restarted. Additionally, the scanner provided an option "Reset: Compressor Run-in" and stated "Compressor Break-in Reset must be performed before Compressor Break-in" in order to be able to start it...yada-yada...". Basically just confused the heck out of me by mixing the terms reset/break-in/run-in. I finally gave up and took it to a local shop who charged me $500 but was able to reset it and recharge the system (note, it took them a bit to figure out as well). I hope you have a better scanner than I, and with a little more patience, maybe you can figure it out. It would be a nice additional video. :-)

    • @scraplifegarage
      @scraplifegarage  Год назад

      I guess my investigative skills aren’t too bad after all! I’m also getting 1900, the car had all kinds of voltage issues with a bad battery and pretty much every module was full of DTC. Prior to clearing the hvac wouldn’t even func to on. After clearing it functions but no AC. The car sees the request for the compressor to turn on, but it never sees voltage or turns on.
      This car never lost refrigerant and the pressure sensor still appears to rear correctly (10bar give or take)
      So it looks like I’m in the exact same boat you were, a functional system aside from the fact that the compressor won’t do its job.
      What shop took care of yours? If they’re already aware of the issue it might be worth just going out to them.
      Also, we have the same scanner and I’m not positive I want to buy piwis 😅

That looks like a simple put back together and go have fun project. Being a Tesla owner my list of gas cars that I would own is a very short list, I too have become a Porsche fan recently, got to cut a few laps in a '19 GT3RS recently, what a machine, wholly shit. @@LeeC At $50k in, given the condition, I’d say this was a very wise purchase. I’m kinda surprised the bidding didn’t go higher. Used low mileage GT4’s are getting over $105k on BaT.

    Nothing wrong with the front bumper. Recondition it and slap it back on. The rear just use a heat gun and pop out the whats been damaged. It will come back to form easily.
