12-AUG-2023. A JetBlue Airways Embraer ERJ-190 (E190), registration N337JB, performing flight JBU521 / B6521 from Boston Logan International Airport, MA (USA) to Palm Beach International Airport, FL (USA) was cruising at 32000 feet, about 70 miles south of New York when the flight crew reported a level 2 threat (Physically abusive behavior) in the cabin, requested to divert to New York John F. Kennedy Airport and to have a law enforcement at the gate. As the pilot reported the passenger was throwing object on the flight attendant.

    THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyrig...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
    HOW I DO VIDEOS:
    1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
    2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
    3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
    4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
    5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
    6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
    7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

The ATCs and pilot handled it very professionally. The passenger may have wanted scotch and he got bourbon, or wanted Pepsi and he got Coke. Pitched his glass of ice cubes at the FA. There should be a substantial fine for this. It cost the airline thousands to divert and it cost all the passengers in time, failed connections, etc. People like this should not be allowed to fly on any commercial airline.

There needs to be a central no-fly list for passengers with a history of being disruptive/abusive. You shouldn’t be able to get kicked off a Delta flight for being abusive and just walk over to Southwest and buy a ticket from them. Make it a 5 year ban for your first violation and lifetime for the second.

Back in the day half the passengers were in the bag when they got on the plane, and continued to get really blotto. I once had to sit next to a really loud, obnoxious drunk from SF to Hong Kong. He finally passed out (they kept serving him!) but kept flopping his arm onto me, and I had to touch his stinking arm to put it back. But if you cut out booze at the airports and on the planes, the drunks would find a way to bootleg it anyway.

So yes, if an actual attempt has been made: level 4, but even if an attempt has been made it would still be relevant to answer if the flight deck is secured, don’t you think? Back in 1998, on our B-727, we had a non-english speaking hispanic male swipe a cart, pull it back to the aft cabin and start throwing unopened cans of CocaCola at the attendant, we did not divert. . . Ice?

      @khall187 9 месяцев назад +6

OK boomer that was 1998. We don't act like that in the skies anymore. Its unacceptable and your flight certainly SHOULD have been diverted if the passenger was that out of control.

Oh, he was arrested when we landed, and the passengers moved away from him until then. But a divert is obscenely expensive back then, and today as well. Air MarshAlls werent a thing. . . and Karens were rare.

A professional operation. It's a question of safety. Jet full of people, busy airspace, no fire, the plane is perfectly fine, so you follow standard procedure for a divert. Even if it were a medical or equipment emergency, they would still have to manage their energy during the descent so they don't come in hot and high and out of control. Shame they had to divert because of a temper tantrum. Higher workload because they didn't get to brief for the approach and had to trust ATC and George, but they winged it just fine. Well done, JBU crew!
