I was fortunate to be at this game, up in the third tier of the Great Southern Stand to watch this game. I still remember many parts of this game. Was very thrilling!
I was also at this game, in the Essendon members in the old Northern Stand, right under the scoreboard. I remember this cocky North fan was like "its a miracle!" when they got far in front, when we started to make a comeback he was nowhere to be seen. I also remember saying to my cousin at halftime that I was happy with us pegging back the lead to 20 points so it wasn't a thrashing, never thought we'd actually win though.
What's remarkable is North Melbourne leading by 69 points nearing halftime, don't capitulate adding nearly 70 additional points to their score and are defeated by Essendon who if scored at the same rate from this point, at the start of the game would have ended up with a score of approximately 260 points.
Disagree. This wasn’t one of those comebacks where the team that surged ahead first played dead for the rest of the game. North were still having a red hot go to try and contain the Essendon onslaught, Bombers were just all class from the second quarter onwards. Greatest game I ever saw. The only way it would have been better were if it was a GF.
This came on after Black Adder starring Rowan Atkinson. Don’t ask me how I still remember this over 20 years later, but I do. I remember reading up how Ch7 were going to replay the game since the original airing in Melbourne on Sunday was just a 60min highlights package which didn’t do the game justice, so I made sure to turn on Channel 7 right before 10:30pm and saw Black Adder on.
@mabiorcholappreciationpage Nah this is when we had actual footballers who could hit a target efficiently. Nowadays we have athletes who can run but can't hit a target at all and it's no wonder games are so low scoring
@Soussy If you read my first statement carefully it's in relation to that particular game. To say defence didn't matter back then tells me you have no idea what your talking about.
Amazing game , but as a Roo ..the wrong result . One funny memory though .in those days you had the usual "look away now if you don't want to know the score " as you'd watch the game later , and Dennis Cometti (commentating on another game ) quips at quarter time with North winning 73-15 .." You wouldn't believe me anyway " . It was vintage Cometti , and I got the humour because I was listening to the Essendon-North game on the radio as I , as a NM supporter couldn't wait for the TV replay ..great days though .you don't see games like that any more
The Saints v Cats match of 2009 simply has nothing on this epic. The greatest match ever, hands down.
They mention that in this game , i cant remember that game , better you tube it. I only watching this again as im a bombers fan.
How does West Coast vs Carlton '95 compare to this one?
This was the 1999 Grand Final we all missed out on.

@user-vk2wp4ot8h go away
that atmosphere when Essendon made their run in the 2nd quarter was unbelievable (from a tigers fan).

Fast forward 19 years and 2 teams kick 12 goals between them for a whole game. North kicked that in the first quarter of this game.
THE greatest H&A game ever?
that 2009 game between st kilda and geelong was pretty good when they were both undefeated in round 14

This game proved that both teams had crappy defense.
@Soussy Teams had good defence even before 2000. Defence mattered back then just as much.
@Soussy So you base it on one season.Tell me what that's about.
