Lot to type, I am Essendon supporter though do remember this game, just found it today so thought would watch. Was a great game with many great players. Shows how good the game was back then during that era, faster, more direct, higher scoring. Not like todays game where there is too much guttless boring backwards kicking. Even the year 2014 was the lowest scoring year since 1968, 1982 was the highest scoring ! Maybe todays players should watch this game and learn something. And to all those people who say Gary Ablett snr was just a full forward, well wrong. He did not play permanent full forward until 1993, and then he kicked over one hundred goals in his first season there. The 10 years before that he was playing all around the ground and still kicking bags of goals from near mid field. Shows what a brilliant player snr was.
I was at this game with my father. We were near the scoreboard. Him and l both looked at each other at half time and thought that the cats had got us. I remember these two elderly women had a banner saying Blightys Boys and they we're waving it around non stop in the first half. This game always make me think of my father. He was so happy afterwards. Both teams were unbelievable. Go Hawks..
Geelong had already reached 100 points in the 2nd quarter, with 9 minutes remaining! Hawthorn's comeback, to some extent, started at that point, when they stopped the onslaught for the last 9 minutes. I wonder what Gavin Exell thinks about his role in this game? An otherwise low key career of around 50 games (he couldn't get a game at my club, Carlton!), but one of the key players in probably the greatest game of all time. The Front Bar needs to speak to him!
I'm actually surprised they don't show this game on any classic footy highlights/ repeats that i've seen in the last 20 years..This was an extraordinary game of football...imagine losing a game of football knowing that you have kicked 163 points
1:37:59 is the original hit by Brereton on Mark Yeates, leading to the square up by Yeates at the opening bounce of the 1989 Grand Final. Of course Dermott went on to kick three in that GF, despite playing with broken ribs, bruised kidney and internal bleeding, courtesy of the Yeates shirt-front.
It says something about the era of footy that this fantastic Geelong side never won a flag. Poor old Gazza used to kick bags of goals in losing sides (14 against Essendon in 93!) but still couldn't drag his side over the line. I was at Waverley watching Carlton and Richmond on this day and there was a raw from the crowd every time the score went up for this game in the first half.. Such was the hatred for Hawthorn at the time. The bus driver had this game on driving back to Clayton. When the Hawks hit the front there was absolute silence in the bus. 55 points down and they'd won. Geelong was our great hope to stop the Hawks machine and they'd failed. If the games 'dealings' were dealt with then like they are now, teams like Geelong and Fitzroy would have won flags (especially 83, 86, 89, 91, 92 and 95). These days paper bags only contain donuts not money. A team would have to get concessions like Brisbane did in 01-03 to fit into their salary cap Brereton, Dunstall, Buckenara, Curran, Tony Hall, Morris, Morrissey, Platten and Anderson (and that's just their goalkickers), Mew, Langford and Ayres. Carlton were raiding the creme of the crop in WA and SA and paying money under the table to elite players from other clubs and still couldn't come up with a side like that. Imagine that forward line if Ablett hadn't have left. It's also a shame that Exell, Morgan, Rogers and Denham all missed the grand final.
What a great game to watch. Shame more games are not as attacking as this one, would be much more exciting to watch if footy games where like this every week.. Not todays game though hey, too much backwards, over defensive bore
Possibly the greatest home and away game ever played followed by probably the greatest Grand Final played all in the same year of 1989..

Gary Ablett sr. On a whole different level.

Geelong's 25.13 (163) is still the highest losing score in VFL/AFL history.
So is their 61 against Hawthorn in the women's.
Geelong should never have lost this game
What a brilliant second half from Gary Ayres and an equally brilliant final quarter from Jamie Morrissey.

It's another 3 years later and I bet you're still whining 😂
Ablett goal at 28:00 wow
Amazing!!
Compared to the rubbish today!!
1:37:50 it all begins
56:09 look at that score!!!
Only Geelong back then could've lost this game. An off its face unbelievable game of footy, but who else but Geelong could've lost it
Only Geelong could of gotten 49 points up at half time against the Hawks...the Cats were a great team but the Hawks were truly a special team !
If you want to know why Yeates hit Brereton in the Grand Final, watch "Derm's" assault in the last quarter.
What a great game to watch. Shame more games are not as attacking as this one, would be much more exciting to watch if footy games where like this every week.. Not todays game though hey, too much backwards, over defensive bore
Yep 80's football was the best IMO ..dont care what people say
And it’s only getting worse
Some things never change; umpires favouring Geelong over Hawthorn 😑
Just umpires favouring geelong in general
Is my memory deceiving me or was television transmission not as bad as it seems in this clip at the time?
I thought it was pretty ordinary. Not clear at all.
Nah definitely wasn't this bad. Upload has probably lost quality due to compression
Wanna fix today’s game? Any kick backwards is play on
Brereton faked it... no 50 metre penalty!
Great game spoilt by the horrible Peter McKenna call.
At least Brian Taylor wasn't commentating back then.
