    While i do understand why you may prefer devolved, i personally find it a even more dumbed down version of bfe with unsatisfying combat design. There is no depth to it and it is a really bland and forgettable experience. Only "high part" i remember is the dunes remake fight but even that was very short. It just isn't fun. However that doesn't mean that the modder is bad at his job after all he was part of the seriously retro remake. As for ss4... the more you are familliar with the serious sam structure, series and how it works, the more dissappointed you will be once you figure out how problematic ss4 is.

    Honestly, I was disappointed with BFE:Devolved. Changes to level design are often questionable (why turn lvl4 and lvl5 into basically single corridors? why turn lvl6 starting area from town-field-town to town-sparse town-town that is a nuisance to clear? why massacre first arena at lvl8 into weird set of mini-arenas with close-encounter enemy spawn? etc, etc, ETC, ETC) but worst are encounters.
    Usual approach of this mod is having half-empty corridors and open spaces before you trigger a SUPER SPAM SPAWN that will drown you in enemies. Like first part pf lvl4 before first turret - you walk where yard full of crates was and bam, you have like 20-30 kamikazes. TEN METERS AWAY FROM YOU. SPAWNING ALL AT ONCE. And don't let me started on BS that was spawns at lvl8. And maybe its just me, but final boss bugged out every time I tried to kill him - he simply refused to take damage.
    It makes gameplay both boring (hard spawns meaning you rarely have a room for experiments in big fights, usually you just pull the biggest gun and press m1 till all enemies are dead) and erratic (because you have swings between half-empty areas and arenas choked-full of enemies). Pair it with dumbed-down level design and you'll get a tedious gameplay that just drains you focus with little pleasure in overcoming the challenge. Because author's idea of challenge was to thro as many enemies at you at closest range possible.
    All in all it make the mod an experience you don't want to repeat.
    And I get that First Encounter was an inspiration and it too was full of close-quarter clusterfucks of fights. But it was way better at doing it than this mod.
    And, like, we have BFE:E for challenge runs. It does little to change maps (which overall are, IMO, good in SS3) but adds new actually interesting and challenging fights. It keeps the game what it is and makes it much better (spare for a few BS kleer-behind-the-corner encounters in early levels). And it is also much better at it than BFE:D.

    Fixed for you, ruined for me, tbh reloading made the encounters super fun, as you have to think more on your actions then just blasting. Making the AR a second Minigun is just dumb. That is the whole point of reloading and having different ammo on it. It is actually a gun with a use compared to the Tommy Gun which gets overriden by the Minigun when you find it. I don't get your problems on the first maps as they are fine, generic design where.

      I'll never understand people who complain about the art-style being bland, gritty and like a typical military shooter, because it fits the apocalyptic, depressing story of the game. And with the position Croteam was in after Serious Sam 2 put them in near-bankruptcy, reusing their assets was really the best thing they could do

    "Devolved" sounds like dumbing things down. And it really is for Me. I don't get the hate of reloading guns, it adds to the dynamics and strategies in combats. New Pump Shotgun animations feel like a nerf gun. Removing Devastator was also absolutely uncalled for.

    I honestly mostly liked serious sam 3 vanilla, it tweaks the formula a bit with the slower pace at the beginning and slightly reworked arsenal but it still felt like a serious sam game to me. That said, screw those tomb levels with the monkeys. Also it's a mod so knock yourself out.

  • @ashhabimran239

    I'm really split on this mod. On the plus side, it does fine-tune some of the pacing of the game, and is overall a great excuse to replay BFE (not that you already needed an excuse). On the other hand, as a replacement for the base game, I'm not fond of it like that since I think the base game is mostly fine without it, and some of the changes I'm not fond of. Replacing the awesome Devastator with the Grenade Launcher? Not cool. And the final boss in Devolved is even worse the the original boss.
    Just adds on to BFE being the most over-hated game in the series, despite being the best-selling, worked on by 15 people, reusing assets and a last chance to prevent going bankrupt, and a response to all the hate SS2 got back in the day. Compared to Sam 2 and 4 (no hate to those games), it's an example of needing only a few ingredients to make something work, and the story in this game compared to Sam 2 and 4 is an example of less is more.

    I just finished a playthrough of vanilla SS3, funnily enough. Yeah, nah, I had a blast with it. Tough as nails and the hitscan and witches make me want to punch Jesus, but I really dig the game. As for ammo, I had no problem with the quantity. Its the capacity that could be better, but it still wasn't an issue. It just made me fight more strategically. Oh, and I never had to reload any gun that wasn't the pistol or double shotty.

    To be honest I think SS4 needs to be "devoldev" much more than SS3.
    SS3 has its problems, but with the subtle improvements when played in Fusion it turns out to be an "acceptable" game. There are bad parts, there are good parts, there are parts that don't feel like Serious Sam, but at least the experience is coherent, even if it's not the best game in the world.
    In the case of SS4 there is a complete imbalance caused by a gigantic array of overpowered tools. A complete rework needs to be done on the way the skills and gimmicks in that game work, establishing a unique gameplay pattern and from that rework all encounters with that basic gameplay in mind. Unfortunately even things that are fun like dual wielding need to be removed if one intends to make a coherent game where it is possible to balance the battles.
    In other words, SS3 is not a very good game, but it at least has internal consistency. SS4 has the potential to be a very good game, but it is inconsistent and completely broken.

    While I love serious sam 3 i admit its the weakest game in the series, and personally its not because reloading , sprinting and aiming i like those mechanics. But the main problem are the pacing and the amount of hitscan enemies it adds making the game an infuriating experience sometimes, lets not forget those fucking underground sections which are awful and enemies like the witch bride who makes your character be unable to move. This is why i love ss4 because its a step on the right direction and fixes those issues. When i played ss3 devolved i said "this is what ss3 should have been". nice video man, looking forward to see you try more mods, you should create a discord sever so we can suggest you some mods to try.

    • @mauser98kar

      I honestly don't get this whole hassle over hitscanners in SS3. You face 4 types of hitscan enemies (clone shotgunner, clone rifleman, lil arachnid and big arachnid), of which only big arachnid is an actual threat (clones are cannon fodder with very low damage even on Serious and lil arachnids have average damage but also open fire from close range, giving you plenty of time to take them down).
      But there are, like, few dozen big red lobster guys in whole campaign, discounting Jewel of the Nile (1 boss in lvl2, 2 in lvl3, 1 or 2 on lvl4, 4 in lvl5, 2 or 3 in lvl6, 3 or 4 in lvl7, 2 in lvl8, 2 or 3 in lvl9, 4 in lvl10, 3 or 4 in lvl11 and 6-ish in lvl12, giving some 30-35 total). And often they are placed as snipers (which they are horrible at, because they have big spread) or confined in chokepoint areas, corridors with plenty of cover or open areas. It usually makes them non-threats and easy targets.
      It is irritating to take unavoidable damage in game that is basically waltz with projectiles, but that's it - irritating, nothing more. If anything, original The Second Encouter had this scorp arena at Tower of Babel - and scorps there didn't have their spread yet. Precise high-dps hitscan from a few dozens of them at once.
      Why people are forgetting that they were much bigger nuisance in Classic than in SS3?

      @@mauser98kar personally i think because there is a bigger amount in ss3. To be fair once You get the hand of it , the Game becomes a lot easier but the first playthroughs were more frustrating because of them , especially for new people trying to get into the franchise.

    • @mauser98kar
      @mauser98kar 2 года назад +1

      @@tacticolty1552 I still don't get it. Its one to have frustrating enemy that is an actual threat (like witchbrides - absolute BS that goes against everything in Serious Sam enemy design) but entirely other to have an irritating enemy that is hardly a threat.
      I mean - common, who cares about clones and lil scorps? Neither deal noticeable amount of damage, practically speaking (lil scorps can, but you have to ignore them completely for it to happen). They are more ticklish than they are dangerous. And big scorps are rare and overrated.
      And again - TFE and TSE had even worth issue with scrops hitscanning you across the map. And unlike BFE scorps there are not rare at all - in fact, they are one of the more common "heave" enemies in TFE and are frequently placed as snipers. Which they are good at, unlike their BFE counterpart.
      Yet people do not complain about this issue in TFE and TSE.

    "Fixes" by dumbing down the gameplay, making AR OP, removing branching paths and turning every level into a giant corridor, implementing fights that are just dumb enemy spams that offer no challenge whatsoever and removing ammo managemend. Not surprising you praise this mod since you also liked that travesty that is Serious Sam 4. You know nothing about this series.

    • @doompenguin7453
      @doompenguin7453  3 года назад +3

      How is the AR OP? You have more enemies to shoot with it in this mod so if you had reloading you would simply not be able to handle them. Also, I feel like you are the one who knows nothing about this series since shooting enemies in a giant corridor or big flat arena is what most of the fights in TFE and TSE are and the Serious Sam formula works well for that kind of gameplay. Also, Serous Sam was never about extreme ammo management. In TFE and TSE you have plenty of ammo for pretty much every encounter. Sure, leaning a lot on one weapon will result in you dying later on since some weapons are more useful in certain situations than others but you will never feel starved for ammo if you utilize your entire arsenal. In SS3 vanilla you are constantly starved for ammo, it's a well known issue with that game. Reloading and being ammo starved like you are playing some survival game is not what Serious Sam is about and it was never about those things so don't tell me I know nothing about the series when you spout nonsense like that.

    • @an0nn
      @an0nn 3 года назад +8

      @@doompenguin7453 The AR is OP because you don't have to reload it and most enemies are Kamikazes/Beheaded/Clones who die in few hits, it was already a problem in vanilla SS3 and it's even bigger here. It is true that Classic Sam didn't have much ammo management especially on Serious difficulty, but having less ammo is beneficial to the gameplay, it makes you think more on what weapons you should or shouldn't use on which enemy, it was a welcome addition that unfortunately manifested itself only in few areas, because CT was dumb enough to provide infinite ammo for RL/C4.
      Yes, levels in SS are mostly corridors and arenas, but what matters is what IS in those corridors and arenas. Fights in TFE/TSE were interesting and challenging, in BFE they were a mixed bag while in Devolved they are mindless enemy spam. Arenas that were open or had multiple paths are now streamlined in Devolved, removing exploration. It's not making BFE feel closer to Classics, it makes it feel closer to SS2.
      Sam is not about shooting a huge number of enemies in big areas, it's about weapon management, fight memorization, knowing which enemy does what and countering it. 100 enemies is not better than 10 if they are not used properly.
      If you want actually good BFE mods, try Enhanced, it's not perfect by any means, it also completely removes ammo management but at least the fights are well designed, but you probably won't enjoy it since you can't just hold M1 to win.

    • @doompenguin7453
      @doompenguin7453  3 года назад

      @@an0nn Try playing Devolved and "holding M1 to win" and see how that works out. As for enhanced, it looks interesting and I will take a look at it but the mod description does not say anything about reloading being removed and reloading is something that I do not enjoy in Sam games since I grew up with the classics and they have no reloading(except for the colts that is).

      @@doompenguin7453 Intrestingly, I was in the same boat as you with BFE Devolved at first. Hell, this mod is the reason why I got Fusion in the first place, to enjoy BFE in the way that was........"intended". Also because I was in the same mindset of "rElOaDiNg BaD". And I did enjoyed it at first, and it's still holds a special place in my heart. But after playing BFE Enhanced, especially on Serious Difficulty, I have to say, Enhanced is objectively better than Devolved. It looks better, the fights are more challanging, the final boss wasn't a chore (vanilla BFE) or an absolute fucking joke (Devolved), and reloading has became a non-issue, at least for me. Sure, maybe because it doesn't really have the ammo management system of Doom Eternal, but whenever I play Enhanced, It doesn't feel like I just mowing down enemies with my AR. I constantly switching to the DB Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, Devastator, C4, Lasergun, Sniper, because Enhanced puts/forces me in situations, that makes me use all of these different weapons. I think this is the "Serious Formula" as it's finest.
      Also, I don't think that insulting a guy that has completed almost all of the official SS games (even Next Encounter) on Serious Difficulty, with the "it is you who knows nothing about this series!" insult is a wise decision. Do your research, that's all I'm saying.......
