Hey buddy, I don't know what it is but you are the real deal. A true photographer and narrator. I am a huge fan.....
Thanks so much Mike, that's really kind. You know us photographers are prone to self-doubt, so I really appreciate the encouragement :-)
@@ChrisBoland One day Chris, when I am all grown up....... I hope to be the kind of photographer you are....
Every time I play one of your clips, my mind goes to rest and I can enjoy the way you describe the things you do and feel. Been following you for some time now and happy to see the passion you put in to your work. Keeps me inspired as well. Thank you.
Hey Niels, thanks so much. I really do enjoy it, I'm glad that comes across. Thanks for saying hi.
I was clicking on this video to learn about the lens, but I'm just floored by these wonderful photos (which, as always in photography, really do have much more to do with the photographer than the camera). Thank you for putting this on here. Beautiful photos!
Thanks so much, that's really kind.
This is the video that convinced me to buy this lens, thank you
You're welcome 🙂 Thanks very much for the comment 🙂👍
This is my favorite lens of all time. I like it more than anything I've tried on my GFX 50R.
Thanks for watching Corey. It's certainly got something special about it - although I'd still love to try the GFX one day.
Hi, beautiful shots. Still my favorite lens for my x-pro2 in 2024, you can use it for everything
Thank you. It does have a unique look. Sadly I don't own it anymore.
Those are lovely shots of your family. It feels like the choice of black and white was the correct one. It makes the images and the moments a little more timeless, a little more like a memory.
Thanks a lot Allysse 🙂 I love the black and white look too and that's a really nice way of describing it. Do you use manual focus with your film cameras? It really slows me down, but that can be nice sometimes.
@@ChrisBoland I do. Apart from the point and shoot none of them havr auto focus. I definitely miss shots that way, but I really like the process. I find it part of a meditation like process of the act of taking a photo.
I wish i can narrate and tell stories like you do !
Thank you very much Ali.
Awesome pics you really make this lens shine, and the relaxed narration complements video.
Thank you very much!
I love this lens
Beautiful photos Chris!
Thank you very much Lars! 👍😊
Beautiful pictures from a spontaneous talented photographer, beautifully narrated in this authentic b/w video.
I can imagine you bringing out a (b/w) movie in 5 years time. I will buy the movie before knowing what story it entails, as long as its made by you and your way of conveying a story. So truthful and peaceful...
Subscribed! Greetings from a young architect from The Netherlands.
Thank you so much Sam. I love the idea of a black and white movie :-) Thanks for the supportive words 👍
Muy buenas fotografías
Gracias! 😊
Great lens in the hands of a very skilled photographer. Catching the spirit and the emotions of a loving family. Can it get any better?
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing your family with us.. nice captures. I recently got the lens as well...makes me feel like the old slr days in high school and college..sigh…
Thank you Lou, and sorry I seemed to have missed your comment from 4 months ago! It's definitely a slow pace using this lens.
Hey wow! Great shots and a great video. Really cool that you managed to make it work for a documentary style too. I ordered a speedmaster a few days ago. Can't wait to try it out!
Thank you very much Jaap! It's a lovely lens - I hope you enjoy yours. There's something quite distinctive about the look.
Lovely family... and you seem to have been acquiring a lot of delightful gear these last months, mister! Seems like a lot of fun. Like chilly with two tails or something near enough. Cheers!
Thank you Pablo. You're right about the kit, I have way too much of it 🙂 I'll get a few videos out of them and then have a bit of a clearout 🙂
Beautiful shots!Have the same lens on my xt2 and love it !!!!
Thank you Kim! 👍
Beautiful images
Thank you! 👍🙂
You’re a tremendously good photographer. Chris. Anytime I’m looking to buy a lens I go look to see if you’ve reviewed it. I know it won’t be a half hour soliloquy on chromatic aberration, but instead well composed, demonstrative photos. Seeing any of these lenses in the hands of an experienced photographer tells more about the lens than any “corner softening” review. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you Andre, that's really very kind of you. I really appreciate your encouragement. I can't wait to get my hands on some new lenses :-)
Lovely good old style picture in B/W whit the Mitakon :)
Thank you KO. Sorry for the late reply :-)
Beautiful shots bro
Thank you 👍👍
Great video man! I am going to have to pick up a copy of this lens.
Sidenote: I dig your dad's Panerai!
Thanks so much Nathan. I admit had to Google "Panerai" and I think my dad would have to too :-)
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Wow, A reunion among family members that had not met for 50 years. I hope you guys have a great time together. Loved the shot at 1:23 it is full of emotion on the face. Did you used a flash?
Thanks 🙂 It was really nice thank you. That picture is lit by a big window. I actually thought the emotion was "Do you have to take another picture of me?" but I'm glad it works 🙂
Hi!
I'm really into buying this lens ... loooooove the f0.95!!!
It's really fun and so different from anything else 🙂
I think this is the most enjoyable lens review I've ever seen on RUclips. Browsed your channel a bit... I predict the path you are on will lead you to be a Leica M shooter in the future.
Thanks very much Kevin, I really appreciate that. I'm extremely curious about the M, though my manual focus skills will need to improve 🙂
Haha! An X100 will make you think that; at least it did to me. I find manual focus on mirrorless very unsatisfying overall even with M lenses. Love your photography by the way. I'm a people shooter too. You don't need an M but I can tell from your work and channel. It's like way great guitar players from any country all seem to find their way to the blues. Story telling people shooters find their way to the M.
Thank you Kevin, we will see where it leads me :-)
@@ChrisBoland I had to smile when I read this comment about you maybe getting a Leica M. I am a Fuji user. I do not have the Mitakon 35/0,95 but I use Kamlan and Voigtlander lenses. I recently found a good deal on a used Leica M10 in superb condition, and I went for it. I already had the Voigtlander lenses to use with it. Leica is another step up in photography. It is nothing like deciding between Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, etc.
A rangefinder is hard to focus, but it slows you down and makes you think more about each picture which is good. It turns the photography process into a kind of calming therapy for me.
Lookup some of the amazing Leica M photographers/photgraphs on RUclips, IG & Flickr - that's what persuaded me to try. And sure enough, I have found my Leica M photographs are on another level. They have a look, clarity, colour and sharpness that is hard to describe, but so obviously there. I make A3 prints from my best images and that's when I really see the difference. "3D Pop" takes on a new meaning with Leica. I've been told its even better if I use Leica lenses. Maybe one day....
I now find manual focusing a lot easier (and faster) than using AF with my Fuji cameras too. I even use AF lenses with the camera set to manual. Its hard to explain, but I when I use a joystick or touch screen to position the focus point, it detracts from the pure process of: adjust exposure, compose, focus and shoot. It helps to switch between Fuji and Leica cameras, when I'm always on manual focus.
By the way, I really liked your family photos and your voice is almost as calming as spending a day shooting with my Leica :-). I am sure you could get a side job helping insomniacs to sleep.
@Muchtoobizy Thank you very much. It's really interesting, as I do feel that Leica is something I would like more than ever. I absolutely do see something in the look that I'd like to get. I'm completely sold on the image quality. I know it's not the same experience as an M, but I think the Q would suit me well - love the 28mm range. I have also started using a Nikon FM2 with manual focus and although I enjoy using it, a more compact M would be fantastic. So yes, more than ever I can see me getting an M some point. Probably not this year though. Maybe if I get that side job of helping people to sleep I'll be able to afford it 🙂
Really enjoyed your video and great photos. I was wondering, did you intend to shoot black and white for so many, or was this perhaps also a function of using that colour profile plus peaking to wrangle wafer-thin 0.95 DoF? I'm shortly getting this lens too but given that I seem to struggle with nailing manual focus on my XPro2 and am considering approaches to assist…
Thanks David. All of these are shot with raw and edited afterwards in Lightroom. I should have thought of the idea of setting the simulation to black and white so the peaking is clearer - that's a great idea. But here the final edits are purely from wanting then to look that way.
Hey Chris.. watching your videos is nothing short of a meditation.. admire your honesty and clarity of thought...
I'm stuck between xf35 1.4 or mitacon 0.95, both available in mint condition. (Xf35 @ 270gbp, mitacon @ 340gbp)
Do mention about character of both lenses and ease of focusing with f0.95,
Never used any manual lens.. my all other lenses are Fuji primes..
Please advise. I'm a enthusiast.
Thank you Atul, I'm really glad you like the videos, that means a lot. I have never been too great at manual focus. I think it would be a nice skill to develop, but often I don't like having to think about that part of the process. So personally I would prefer the 35mm f1.4 it's on the camera I've got attached to my belt as I write this :-) I sold the Mitakon, but really enjoyed using it for a while, but it wouldn't be an everyday lens. I hope that helps. Thanks again.
@@ChrisBoland thanks lot Chris.. even my heart goes out for Fuji..😊
Lovely family reunion you have shared with us Chris and those smiles tell a thousand stories! I hope my images turn out as good of yours as I normally rely on auto focus but with my recent purchase of the same lens its all going to be a new experience so fingers crossed. The lens arrived with no hood and its a definite requirement with some of the flare issues I have been reading about. Could you possibly recommend a lens hood and to be cheeky also a link would be much appreciated. Have you used the lens for any wedding portraits as I would love to know if you were pleased with them! Thanks & cheers :)
Thank you very much Nee, I really appreciate it. It's a really special lens, but I'm the same as you - I currently don't have a good, so unfortunately I can't help with that. I really need to improve my manual focus - I particularly want to manual focus for video I do. I've not used it at weddings just yet - that would be great to do, but weddings are so hectic sometimes, I don't think I need to be confusing myself with manual focus. So far I have mostly played it safe at weddings 🙂
@@ChrisBoland It's a relieve to know I'm not the only one who finds this lens challenging so my patience for a while will bare with it, hopefully … lol. Thanks for taking the time to respond and I wait with interest the next time you take the lens out however in the meantime there is enough photography & films on your site to keep me happily occupied. :)
I love them! I bet you mission was quite difficult chasing the little girl and try to have a sharp image at f0.95!
I love the B&W, it's any of the film simulations or you did it in post?
Thanks again for sharing this.
Thank you Juan! It was definitely difficult getting action shots 🙂 I have edited them in Lightroom and added some grain and usually a bit of clarity too.
@@ChrisBoland Thank you Chris! I'm always trying to shoot JPEG when it's not a paid shoot, but I'm keep trying different settings and never I'm 100% what I like. Of course depends on the subject and situation you need some fine tuning. I think I'll keep shooting RAW+Jpeg for a while
Hey Chris, I'm in a pickle I bought the mitakon 35mm but I feel its not convenient to use. The bokeh is great but its not as sharp as xf 35mm f1.4? Which do you prefer if you could have only have one?
Hi Marky. I felt just the same. I loved using it for a while, but I sold the Mitakon.
Wonderful videos!!!! I subscribed after this one. I’ve been hard pressed for a x-t3 or Nikon D750. I’m so torn between the two
Thank you! What type of photography do you do? If it wasn't for my wedding photography I wouldn't get the D750 - even though it is fantastic. The XT3 is light and fantastic quality.
Chris Boland I shoot everything lol. Whatever friends ask. I did a wedding at night with 6d and iso killed a lot of shots. Sony is awesome but lens cost more than camera and repairs are ridiculous. I just did senior graduation party and portraits. I just don’t know how good the D750 is in autofocus? Does it have face detection?
I have found the D750 to have superb autofocus. No face detection, but personally I prefer not to use that. For weddings it's amazing.
These are amazing! Did you use Lightroom/Photoshop or Capture one to editing?
Thank you very much! These were all edited from raw using Lightroom.
@@ChrisBoland Thank you for answering. Great natural look and beautiful tones! I just ordered this lens, because I was inspired by your work.
Hi Chris, are you still using this lens. I wanted to ask your thoughts using this lens and the Fuji 35 f1.4.
Hi. I actually took this lens around Cambridge a week or so ago, with the intention of making a little video with the pictures. It is a special and unique lens, but on the street I prefer a wider field of view, and if I'm honest, autofocus too. I know I need to practice, but quite a few of my shots were out of focus - some charmingly so 🙂 but it can be a bit hard work. The 35 1.4 on the other hand has its own beautiful look and AF. Right now, if I could only have two lenses the 35 1.4 would be one of them - the other I'm not completely sure, but would be a 23. The 0.95 is fun to try and wonderful, but isn't something I love using day-to-day.
Thanks for sharing! Great pics, but the color ones might be 1/3 to half stop underexposed.
Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it. I'll take a look at that.
do you still keep Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 if you own Mitakon?
These are the thoughts that go around my head 🙂 The truth is I have way too many lenses - and cameras even. I think soon I'm going to try and simplify things. I've been experimenting with things for a while, but it's probably time to choose my favourites. Both of these lenses feel special. If I had to keep one it would be the Fuji 35 because the autofocus makes it so easy to use - I used it for a family portrait session the other day and it was great.
is it hard to do manual focus?
I find it quite hard, but I don't have much practice :-) It's a good skill to learn though, I think.
Is this lens Weather seald?
Hi. I don't think so, but I'm not sure. It's very very well made though.
You don't need to manually focus. This lens has a meter scale. With this set you get sharp photos every time
Thank you for the tip. What aperture do you mostly use it at?
@@ChrisBoland
I don't have this exact lens but I have vintage manual Pentax lenses that have that same scale.
Back in the film days you would use the scale to preset the focus to be sharp within a specified range. That way you could pull out your camera and just press the shutter release without first focussing and still get a sharp picture every time.
