I love this lens. Although 7Artisans doesn't really state it, this lens is best for cine work. The softness it produces is what we cinematographers look for. In addition, the looseness of the aperture ring is also something I look for. A stiff aperture ring makes the camera shake while changing adjusting the aperture while shooting handheld. Furthermore, the lack of hood con only mean that this lens when presented to cinematographers like myself, will attach a matte box like the Tilta matte box. Just by the fact that this lens has a click less aperture ring tells me that their main focus is for this lens to be used for cine work. For cine work, this is an outstanding lens. Surgical lenses are not the norm for a cine lens. If you notice, creators that select these surgical type lenses end up putting a mist filter on them to achieve a softer look which the 7Artisan gives without the filter.

At this point, I'm really not surprised that you end up being the first RUclips video that pops up for most of my Fujifilm Google searches. As always, fantastic and honest review! :) Thank you so much!
I used this lens. Real T-stop is about T/1.3-T/1.4, so this is similar to good F/1.2 lens. And 7artisans 35/0.95 is just 1/4-1/3 E.V. faster than my Nikon 35/1.4 at F/1.4 and similar to my TTArtisans 50/1.2.
I got the Sony mount and love it on my 6400. Love the close focus. Focus is wafer thin and sharpness is unbelievable at 1.2 for $250. Nice review. Subscribed.
I've also tested this lens side by side with Mitakon, Purple fringe is the main problem optically, not only the edge of contrast, the whole field shifted into a magenta/pink of colour tint. The Mitakon version is a much sharper & better lens overall, Laowa is going to release a 33 f0.95 soon, I think that would be a true competitor to the Mitakon version.
After getting into digital photography a couple years back, one thing I've learned not worry about is looking to find a f stop in low light situations. Just increase your isolated. No big deal
Bought the Mitakon at a very good deal, love it so much, I sold both my fuji 35mm f/2 and f/1.4. This 7 Artisan shares the same optical design with even more aperture blades, should be very promising. With that price tag, it is a must have in your bag.
@@pal2tech Maybe you could use both, you can just search for "0.37m in yards" (or whatever number for that matter) on Google and it will convert it for you. As someone living in Europe I appreciate measurements in m / cm.
@Juan Ignacio Caino As he has talked about in one of his videos, he’s kind of a perfectionist. Pointing out minor mistakes is generally considered a good practice, no matter in a professional working setting or in the academia. That’s how you make things closer to perfect. No need to be salty here.
Great review! I kinda want this lens now. Don’t know if you take suggestions, but it would be cool to see a review of the Laowa 65mm macro lens. Not only does it magnify 2:1, but also it has practically no chromatic aberrations. It’s pretty impressive and fun lens to use.
More than bokeh, I'm curious about the light gathering capability of this lens. I read somewhere that it (and Mitakon) gathers no more light than Fuji's f1.4 offerings. Any way to test this?
recently picked up a mint used SLR Magic Hyperprime 50mm f0.95 purchased a metal 62 mm screw in hood just waiting to get out after lockdown to test it out ! This might be on my bucket list for my Fujifilm X bodied thanks for review ! :)
Regarding corner sharpness (or lack of it)... How much was it because of different distance from lens whether straight in front or diagonally? With this narrow depth of field would not exactly be surprised if there's a massive difference, especially when you're trying to take a picture with a lot of detail, but really close by.
I’ve seen so many videos where they check focus in the corners, correct me if I’m wrong, the wider the lens is, the distance from the corners is longer than it is from the center so the focus would be of. With that being said, if you focus on the corners the center of the object will be soft, I know this to be true on ultra wides at F2.0-3.5
May I suggest when testing fast lenses in the future that you include subjects further away? Super shallow dof is less of an issue when the subject is further away.
5:41, when shooting against a wall, the distance from the center to sensor is longer than corners to sensor. So the lack of sharpness could be an effect of the F/0.95, no? Not all lenses are flat field, and I doubt cheap ones are.
I got the mitakon back a couple of years ago. While the bokeh is lovely I really don’t like the way it renders. Much prefer the Fuji 35mm f1.4. or a vintage lens. Thanks for the review.
I own some cheaper chinese lenses like Viltrox 23mm f1.4 or Meike 35mm f1.7. They have similar design problems, e.g. not clicking and easy going aperture or losing lense cap. For the Meike I bought a separate lense cap for the filter size of the lense. My English is not very good, thanks for your very clear and sufficient slow speach. This helps a lot to follow your interesting presentations.
Hi Pal, thanks for the review! Could you tell me what lens did you use to record this video please? Also, did you use an external recorder? Thanks keep going!
I just received this lens yesterday and pretty much agree with all that you said. My copy also seems to have a mild intermittent "grinding" with the focusing ring. I'm sure it's just a bad copy issue. I also purchased the Pergear 35mm 1.2 to test and compare and in contrast the rings on that have much more resistance, I've yet to accidentally knock the aperture ring. I agree that a MK2 of this lens will have a better resistance so with that, I think I may just stay with the little Pergear for now. f1.2 if really more than enough in most real life situations. I really wanted to love this lens more than I do lol.
0,37 meter or 37 centimetres 😉 Thanks for the review, I appreciate it. It's great to learn more, especially this way, about such lenses before eventually buying them. Cheers!
There actually someone who claims that the 7artisan is more a f1.0. A comparison done by Jonas Rask it was for me clearly. Exp +3 on the 7artisans and the pictures was identical vs the Mitakon at same aparture f0.95. So if you shoot both at 0.95 the 7artisans will be a slight darker.
Another great video! I’ve had the mitakon now for 2 years now and I’ve noticed the centre sharpness and colour resolution is a lot better than my other 2 Fuji 35mm 1.4 & f2,lenses and like you said at 0.95 it’s only good for artistic images or isolating tiny things
@@ericthestone yes absolutely you did good! My mitakon is glued to my 5th Fuji camera the XE3!! and the colour rendering is just awesome and gives that filmic look to the images
Great video. Having both lenses, I confirm your observations. I would add that the 7artisans has a tad narrower field of view and is half a stop darker, as your 2 photos of the Lego character shows.
As always, thanks for the great content. I'm looking to get the Speedmaster, but your video makes me think twice. One point I would like to add about the f 0.95 is that if you are shooting low light somewhat farther away from your subject, focusing is not a big issue. My purpose in getting one of these lenses is for shooting groups of people indoors in low light at say a wedding reception.
Be careful, because 7artisans has indeed 0.95 aperture (geometrically), but max T-stop is very close to Fujinon 35mm 1.4. It will render amazing blurred backgrounds but will give you comparable amount of light as Funinon (minus AF).
@@wieteskawieteska Thank you, great pointing T stops is it what matters for low light! Any comments on the MITAKON SPEEDMASTER 35MM F/0.95 MK II F? Hey, Sayan this side I have one question. Actually I am a student and just got one second hand fuji camera. Now I want a lens for night time videography. I am also an artist who posts various videos. I have a few lights and as I have my college during day time coming and drawing at night is kind of relaxing but can't record as my current lens has 2.8 f stop. I am planning to buy one lens that will give me the liberyof shooting some film footage for my job and also those of my artworks during night. so which f stop would be a better option for me a0.95 or a 1.2 or a 1.4. I actually don't have a lot in my pocket and at Max can just buy one lens. So if you can help me a bit would be great. Lots of love from India
Good review, I think I'm gonna wait and see what Fuji and Sigma do this year. I really want a third party auto focus, not sure about the Viltrox and that aberration stuff, although the Viltrox 85 looks incredible.
I got the viltrox 56mm and can confirm aberration is a big issue, also it misses focus more often than I'd like even after lens and camera firmware updates
Thanks for this lovely rich information video i've been aiming this lens for months, i have XF 50mm F2 for do everything for me but i will need something specific for my photos mostly portraiture and still life, between this f0.95 one one or keep learning with 50mmF2 then save up for XF 90F2, still have alot time to decide thanks alot for this video
Sounds like a good cine lens over a stills lens... Still wondering why lens manufacturers don't offer a click/declicked switch for hybrid shooters... That would be handy
I opted for this lens than the mitakon ver cos it’s lighter, cheaper and the difference in IQ isn’t that noticeable in my eyes and for the $200 difference this is a no brainer for me being on a budget. I also noticed that mitakon version tends to do cateye bokeh in some situation which I personally don’t like. I bought a cheap $5 jjc metal lens hood for my 7art 35mm and it’s doin fine.
Great suggestion! I need to look back in my email. I think they contacted me back in Sept but I literally had to declare email bankruptcy and didn't get to it. I'd love to review that lens.
Ah, apparently they're both made by DJ Optics. I've got lenses by both and have always been impressed with the quality. I tend to use them exclusively on my XE2, with the older fuji sensor.
@pal2tech: Thanks for this video and also for the link to the focus-peaking video. I've tended to stay away from focus peaking because I would like to have it switch on only when I'm turning the focusing ring. But unless I've missed some obvious X-T4 setting, once the camera is in M mode, focus peaking is displayed in the viewfinder constantly. It becomes pretty distracting. Is there a way to have focus peaking come on _only_ when you're actually turning that ring?
A review of superb integrity as always! You almost had me sweatin bullets tho Chris! I spent double the dollars for the mitikon good to know I’m at least getting a sharper image at lower apertures and a little nicer roll off lol. But if I’m a new buyer, folks I would be remiss to suggest anything other than “go with the cheaper option in this case!”. No offence mitikon, you guys built a tank of a lens! I accidentally drop tested that thing, from 7 feet high, not a scratch. Thank god.
I just received mine in the mail and something is rattling very loud inside the lens. Edit- I found out the rear element is spinning freely. The lens appears to still work, but that goes to show the build quality is crap
can the sensor of the camera even register the extra light when you get below f1.4-1.2? I always thought most sensors can't benefit from the extra light after 1.4ish
When I saw the sample photos of the 7Artisans on the net, I immediately noticed the bokeh outlines on the 7Artisans vs my Mitakon which I have used extensively. It can get distracting at times (especially backlit foliage). I think the Mitakon is better in sharpness, the bokeh, and the Mitakon is a little brighter. Is it worth the price difference? Depends on your priorities. I kept my Mitakon. I have sample images in my channel of the Mitakon used on weddings and pre-weddings quite a lot (second only to the Viltrox 23mm). One thing I'd like to add, if you're shooting on very wide apertures, sometimes manual focus is a lot faster as the camera won't be hunting as you are directly controlling where you want to focus. Of course, it'll be really hard if your subject is running or moving erratically but for weddings and portraits where you can predict the direction of the movement, you can be faster.
Super interested to pair this with a DJI's Lidar based focus assist for the R2, center focus only, but it could be something :) Still waiting for mine from B&H, back-ordered since December :(
My photography professor said to throw away the lens cap and instead use uv filter.. if u have lens cap on . U may miss a shot while trying to uncap the dam thing
0.37 cm would be awesome😅 I suggest that for min focus distance and focal length we use the Klingon unit of length measurement Kellicam. Everybody knows that😅😅😅😅 Thanks for the review👍
All manual lens? F0.95? I'm watching this from behind the sofa. Sounds like hard work! And yeah it does sound like a faff, with those non-clicky rings and the ejecty lens cap (I'd hate that!). Against that, I think your photos where objects are only half in focus have their own beauty. Like you say, it has a place.
I also have the 7Artisan 55mm F1.4 so I had no hesitation in getting the 7Artisan 35mm F1.2 Mark 2 for my XT-3. I take largely stationery subjects so the manual focus doesn't bother me, in fact I enjoy the process more, especially with the brilliant focus highlight feature. I would have like the aperture to be recorded in the exif but at this price you can't have everything! Personally I've been very happy with the results from this lens. Hope this helps?
I've had mine for a year and a half, and it's a really nice lens. Nice and soft at f/1.4, and very sharp at f/2. The build quality is much better than their 25mm, but not quite as good as their 12mm. Of the three it's definitely my favourite, even if it's hardly a normal focal focal length. Seriously considering this 35mm for that. Note that now there is the even cheaper, brighter and clicked-apertured TTartisan 50mm f/1.2 available though. Got one of those on the way in MFT mount, really looking forward to trying it out. It looks a little weird, but if it's as good as the 55mm optically, it might be the better option.
@@orangorill I was also looking at the TTArtisans 50mm f1.2 but what I’ve seen but I think it’s clickless. I’m ok with that. I have the 7 Artisans 12mm and love it.
@@orangorill you are correct, the TTArtisans 50mm does have a click aperture ring. Tats great news. Now to decide which to get the 7Artisans 55 or the TTArtisans 50???
Greetings Mr. Lee. • A joyous 2021 to you. Thank you for your efforts in making this great mini-review summary of the 7Artisans 35/0.95. • May I ask if you've done a review of the Mitakon 35/0.95? If given a choice, which would you prefer? The 7Artisans or Mitakon edition? As hard as it may seem to lock focus at 0.95, is the Mitakon more manageable in yielding acceptably sharp images (at the center) than the 7Artisans? • Also, Laowa will be releasing its 0.95 edition at 33mm (www.fujirumors.com/laowa-argus-33mm-f-0-95-specifications/). Unfortunately, it's aperture ring is still clickless. Thanks again!
Clip on lens cap, about £1, lens hood, about £5. If 7Artisans added these, I bet it would add £50 to the purchase price. I would be prepared to suck up these shortcomings.
"I don't think anyone else on the planet would notice this" It was literally the first thing I looked for when I got to the comparison haha. Nice review.
I love this lens. Although 7Artisans doesn't really state it, this lens is best for cine work. The softness it produces is what we cinematographers look for. Muchas gracias Oscar !!! ¡¡¡Es muy amable por tu parte!!!
Hi. It looks like it’s not T0.95 as compared to the more expensive mikaton , as you can the picture is darker a bit. Isn’t it?
What the hell! It is the best review I saw! Thanks! I love your videos!
The interesting lens cap is no problem for me as I use only lens hoods. Would get myself a lens hood made of metal, Leica style, less than 10 bugs...
Min focus would be 0.37m aka 37cm, but not 0.37cm
can the sensor of the camera even register the extra light when you get below f1.4-1.2? I always thought most sensors can't benefit from the extra light after 1.4ish
PLEASE , do a review about TTartisan 50mm f0.95 for the next video.
great review! thank you :) have you looked at the TTARTISAN 50mm f1.2?
Super interested to pair this with a DJI's Lidar based focus assist for the R2, center focus only, but it could be something :) Still waiting for mine from B&H, back-ordered since December :(
You make great videos man , very informative and an engaging style too !
Thank you so much! 🙏
Will you pleas do a video on 7artisans 35mm F1.2 Mark ii I would really appriciate that.
Are you sure the minimum focus distance is .37 cm? That's about an eighth of an inch! Perhaps you meant to say 37cm.
Great review! And i absolutely loved the intro.
My photography professor said to throw away the lens cap and instead use uv filter.. if u have lens cap on . U may miss a shot while trying to uncap the dam thing
Great Review. Commenting From South Africa As A Wedding Film Maker
I can get Viltrox 33 or this for the same price. What should I get?
0.37 cm would be awesome😅 I suggest that for min focus distance and focal length we use the Klingon unit of length measurement Kellicam. Everybody knows that😅😅😅😅
Thanks for the review👍
yeah, I just knew that cm/m thing was going to haunt me, LOL! Next time in Kellicam for sure.
Can't you recharge the lens hood with a couple of neodymium magnets?
All manual lens? F0.95? I'm watching this from behind the sofa. Sounds like hard work! And yeah it does sound like a faff, with those non-clicky rings and the ejecty lens cap (I'd hate that!). Against that, I think your photos where objects are only half in focus have their own beauty. Like you say, it has a place.
0.95 or XC f2 which better picture guality?
I dont get it, you dont have a sample portrait in 0.95. Why?
I stay with Mitakon. I do not have it but it is in my wish list.
I would love to see the dreamy type of psychedelic video one might shoot with this lens. I might have to try this out myself
Hi, can you do a review on 7Artisan 35mm F1.2 Mark 2 version? Thanks a lot!
So just buy the viltrox then. You don't buy an f0.95 lens to shoot at f2 or f5.6
I was looking forward to this review, thank you!
The venus optic lowa argus is now the best . 95 lens
Great review! I'd love to use this lens
keep up the good work mate , thanks for the review
No problem 👍
Great review! Do you have any thoughts on the 7Artisans 55mm f1.4? Have you reviewed any of their other lenses. Thanks.
Unfortunately not yet.
We (APS-C users) need 56mm f0.95 from these Chinese lens makers...
Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 is pretty good.
Thank you for this very helpful video. I was just considering the purchase of that lens but i know now that i won't buy it.
f0.95 sounds great but when I look at the images, I prefer Fujinon 35mm f2.
Would you be able to use the lens work for video?
What I’m most curious about is how good this lens is with low light!
In what way?
@@fredbloggs545 because of the ability to drop down to a F0.95. That seems very convenient when shooting lowlight
Clip on lens cap, about £1, lens hood, about £5. If 7Artisans added these, I bet it would add £50 to the purchase price. I would be prepared to suck up these shortcomings.
Very good review Pal
The one stop place for Fujifilm users.
What is with T-stop of the lens? Ive herard it somewhere around T1.4 at max which is a bummer
one can see that for all the images shown here, it's a bit darker than the Mitakon, it's quite obvious actually.
Think of it as a really cheap 35mm f1.2 for exposure but with nice bokeh and shallower DoF!
I still enjoy your videos even when it’s a piece of gear I’m not even interested in!
Awww, thank you so much Kristi!! 🙏🙏
Is the this mitakon the version II?
Love your videos, I've watched so many I thought I was subscribed?
I am now!
"I don't think anyone else on the planet would notice this"
It was literally the first thing I looked for when I got to the comparison haha. Nice review.
LOL!!! Awesome!!!
