      as somebody who's been contemplating between the 35mm f1.4 and f2 this test has shown me what i prefer rather than by comparing the two lenses side by side...logically that doesn't make sense but artistically it showed which lenses brought the most feelings for me. • @WatchmanNiel

    I guessed nearly every one of the first 10-15 shots, then started to struggle a bit more. I’m inclined to buy the fast aperture versions (16mm, 23mm 56mm), but I am really pleased that my one exception was the 35mm f/2. I actually find it sharper than the 1.4 - also in this video - and the bokeh and falloff is rather pleasing and not overdone when wide open. The other stellar f/2 lens is the 90mm, though harder to nail focus.

    Hi! I own the Fuji xt2 along with the 23 & 50 f2s. For indoor newborn photos would you suggest the 35 1.4 or the f2? Sometimes I feel like the 23 is too wide and not enough background blur and the 50 is too close which is why I’m thinking about a 35 for this type of shoot. Thanks!

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  5 лет назад +1

      i personally would get the 35mm 1.4 as it has a closer minimum focus distance. this comes in handy for newborn photos as you can get in closer to isolate details, closer than you would've been able to with the f2. i have some links to the lenses in my video description if you want to help the support the channel :)

    Hi i just discovered your videos, great content, great photos thank you very much !
    i just have one small question, i’m myself a proud owner of a fuji X-T3 that i use for video a lot too and the small problem i have with it is the noise that my lenses makes when autofocusing, it’s clearly audible in the video and i’m not liking it. Which lens do you use as i can’t seem to hear any autofocusing motor noises in your videos ? Thank’s a lot !

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  5 лет назад

      the key to not having the lens AF be picked up in the audio, is to have an external microphone. I use a rode videomicro for all my videos. it's super cheap and really helps to inprove the audio (and avoid hearing the af noise!) amzn.to/2NQ1cEM

    • @delarageaz
      @delarageaz 5 лет назад

      Reggie Ballesteros okay. i have a rode VideoMic Pro, the first version of it and when it sits on my camera i can still hear perfectly the noise of my 23mm 1.4 lens autofocusing :/ I could use an extension cord and a second tripod to get the microphone away from the camera but i don’t want to.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  5 лет назад +1

      KLE RAIN i don’t think the image quality of the lens changes between those bodies. What does change tho is the af performance and speed, which is definitely faster on the xt3

      @@Reggiebphoto t h ank you so much for your reply
      Im still undecided between the 35mm f1.4 and f2. I love bokeh - would you say there's much of a difference in bokeh smoothness between those two lenses? The photos you took with the f2 are spectacular
      So many people are saying to get the f1.4 but if there's not a huge difference in picture quality then I would go for the f2. I need to make a decision this week. Some people are saying there is lens distortion with the f2. The f1.4 people seem to be fanatical about the f1.4. TO the point they make fun of people wanting the f2 😳

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  5 лет назад +1

      KLE RAIN if you like focusing up close, then the 1.4 can focus closer than the f2. This is the main reason why you can achieve more bokeh in the 1.4 - as getting closer to the subject creates more bokeh. Both lenses are great and if you don’t shoot in super low light, then the f2 is pretty awesome. I know this isn’t that helpful but you’re choosing between two good lenses so you can’t really go wrong.

      IQ of the mitakon is stellar, I would rate it 8.5/10 ; only drawback is flare, u need to have a lense hood for this one. I love better the softer mitakon than the fuji 35 1.4.

    Thanks for a helpful and well thought out video. Your child’s babbling was more helpful (and more accurate) than half the reviews out there. :-) To my surprise, I got most of them right,, but did so based more on contrast and the quality of the bokeh (where it applied) than anything else. The one that surprised me most was the distant shot of a couple in front of a window. The f2 performed better than expected there. I thought a couple of the Mitakon shots were the f1.4, but got the rest of them right. Now, I think the f1.4 is magical-much to my dismay, since I already own the f2! Thanks again.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  4 года назад +1

      Prasanna Kumar M people call it fast because larger apertures can use faster shutter speeds. But as far as frames per seconds go, the 1.4 has slower af and effectively is slower in the burst shooting potentially

      @@Reggiebphoto Thank you for replying! If I'm doing handheld low light photography, what would be the difference in shutter speed, between a F1.4 Lens & a F2 Lens. I mean, how much faster shutter speed can I get for the same composition in F1.4 than F2.

    • @ezrasterback97
      @ezrasterback97 4 года назад +1

      @@prasannakumarm8951 from f2 to f1.4 there is one stop of light. So if you were to shoot at 125th of a second using f2, at f1.4 you would be able to shoot at 250th of a second. It's only one stop of light. you can do the same by raising one stop of ISO, if you were at f2 at 125th and ISO 100, if you wanted to go a stop faster(250th), while staying at f2, you could also raise ISO to 200. Same results in exposure. F1.4 comes in handy if you need the extra shutter speed, if you want more bokeh(blurriness in the background/foreground), or for shooting in the night/dark(stars etc). But if you are shooting landscape most of the time you would shoot at f8 or f11 to get everything sharp(more deph of field, DoF), in this case whether you have a f1.4 capable lens or f2 makes no difference, except as indicated earlier by Reggie, the Fuji 35mm lens af is slower than the f2. But then again, AF speed used in fast burst mode is really only used when shooting sports, for paparazzi, fast moving objects, wildlife and... kids?? and in most cases long tele lenses are used, 200mm and beyond. 35 mm is more of an artistic lens, for street photography, wedding, landscape, etc... which does not require so much af speed. Hope that helps

    Really practical video for anyone pining over which of these lenses to buy. For 35's, I have the f2 because of its size and video. I was lusting over the Mikaton but I came from Nikon and had a Seiss 100mm f2, 45mm pc-e and Voigtlander 58mm f1.4. I really love those lenses and manual focus, but when I am honest with myself and look at them carefully, it is easy to miss focus and be slightly disappointed with the results. Because of that I would likely get the 35mm f1.4 some day or perhaps the 56mm f1.2 for that narrow depth of field. In the meantime the f2 is great and I will focus on making images instead of gear. I've got to admit that the quality of the F2 surprised me a bit (on the positive side) and the Mitakon was a tad underwhelming. I'm still not regretting that I've chosen the F1.4 though. It still has the nicest rendering (especially in Acros) and for indoor shots I need that F1.4. For better bokeh I actually have an old (dirt cheap) Pentax 50mm F1.4 which does the job for me. A bit less sharp but for 40$ (20 for the used lens and 20 from the adapter) I can take amazing protraits with nice saturated colours, shallow DOF and out of the world bokeh (instead of the pricey 56mm).

    The f2 surprised me. Sharp all around with great contrast and character. The 1.4 has more bokeh than I thought, but some of its images lacked microcontrast (images 5 and 29 looked washed out and a bit milky to me).

I'm less of a fan of the other two, but they are competent lenses except for the distortion in the f/2 which I think was initially over-corrected in software, but since a firmware update for the lens it is now a better performer. Anyway watch out for portraits with the f/2 by not placing any faces near the edge of the frame (where distortion punishes the most). The Touit is a very special lens in terms or ftransparency and 3d pop.... as is the f/1.4

    I surmised that the MItakon had the shallowest depth of field @0.95, was that cheating? But only occasionally could I discern otherwise at a higher aperture. I could tell I liked the Fuji lenses better overall (most of the time) & preferred the look of the Fuji 1.4 the best. I totally agree with your about the lenses!

      Ole Arnt Thomsen that’s one of the points I wanted to illustrate. Side by side comparisons of the same images would be easy to spot. When things are varied, gear starts to matter less. So less worrying about gear, and just focus on getting the shot. It can be done just as well on the f2 as the rest of the lenses in this test.

    The 35 1.4 was the first prime lens that I purchased. The price is good and it is very lightweight. I bought for the low element count and 1.4 low light ability. Agree that Autofocus is fine for street and portraits. People complain way to much about the slow autofocus. This is not an sports action lens. Maybe for running kids it would be to slow, have not used for that. All of your images looked great. Most of them I could not tell which lens was used.

      PT76251 thanks for the comments and insight . I totally agree. If you complain about af, why not just accept and embrace its speed and practice good judgement and being prepared for the shot. Or just stop down if the subject matter or actions calls for it. It’s up to the photographer to fix the gears downfall.
