Love that there is a name for this style. I have loved it since I was 7 and my dad let me pick out carpet, wallpaper and furniture for my Bay Area CA bedroom: a crisp white cotton-clad canopy bed, colors of the tropical sea in rug and cottage-scenes wallpaper! The island of Guam is the first home I can recall- we moved back and forth from there to mainland so it all fits. Plus I just became a great grandma!
Omg a GREAT grandma?!!! HUGE congratulations 🫂👶🐣 I love your Guam story and this is MY personal favourite style🥰 We are moving to the coast and I can't wait to start decorating in this style 🤗
Don’t forget some type of glass container with a collection of shells picked up from leisurely strolls along the water’s edge and an absolute must is some beach glass! That gorgeous Dutch Barn style home shown in the beginning of the video is my dream home, hands down. Personally I prefer to wrap up the style term as shabby chic. That way I can incorporate the style of Provence, Tuscany, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and while I’m daydreaming might as well add a wooden hulled boat tied up down at the weathered dock. What the heck, might as well dream big!
Absolutely adore beach glass- both fascinating and beautiful🌊🐚 I agree on the Dutch barn comment - we don't have houses like that here in the UK and I would die for a cape cod style home!🤣 We are off to Provence for the Summer and I will certainly come back and do some design videos on the style as well as a design travel vlog!😚🇫🇷 I love your comment & energy! 😂🤗🛶
@@dantierandbalogh now I’m turning green-Provence in the summer!! Not a fan of the smell of lavender but it is beautiful when it blooms and the fields turn such a lovely color!! Have a great time!
This is the look I love. I’m nowhere near the water but that doesn’t stop me from being a costal grandma. I wish that I could afford to change my flooring from carpet (and linoleum In the kitchen area) to hardwood laminate in a lighter, costal vibe and to paint my kitchen cupboards white. In the meantime, I like what I have. I was so flattered when my brother was over the other day and said that my open kitchen/eating/ and living room areas were so “light and airy” ! This is the video that I have been looking for for ages!
You did a wonderful job of describing the coastal grandma design aesthetic. Well done! I've been slowly gravitating towards this style and it's even easier to find second-hand and antique pieces to incorporate while keeping in line with the coastal look.
As a straight guy in my mid 40’s I’m not sure how I feel about being a coastal grandmother, but I DO love the style! Thanks for posting and hi from Cornwall!
Ohhhh lovely! Sorry 'coastal grandmother' is the name, but I wouldn't take it too seriously 😆 We love Cornwall! Laszlos family all live there and we used to live there for a long time 🖤🤍🌊
@@dantierandbalogh it’s a wonderful calming coastal theme. Can’t do with novelty nautical. I used to visit New England and the outer banks alot so love this theme.
I put a bird feeder in my yard with a berry nut bird seed mix. The critters tend to eat the feed and leave my fruits and vegetables alone. Good luck! Love the style suggestions!
I sooo appreciate that you gave very detailed ideas of what to use on each thing you said. I'm having a hard time choosing decor for my house. I just keep ending up with word plaques cuz they cute. Lol. This helped so much! Im going for a coastal without saying coastal vibe tho so no sailboats or seashells for me! Abstract yes!
Those mirrored balls you see on a stand in gardens are meant for the bird to catch a glimpse of himself, and think another bird is coming at him. If you can't find one of those, try hanging aluminum pie pans somewhere in the garden.
One thing remember coastal grandmother probably inherited items from her family and also downsized so you get an eclectic mix . Timeless quality is something which underpins the look.
I would love to see a video on mixing light and dark woods cohesively. I'm furnishing an entire new home with this style but worried I'll get a room collection's rather than an eclectic comfortable look.
TIP from an experienced gardener: birds don't eat the leaves for nutrition, they want the water. I suggest two tactics. First, drape wedding tulle (the thin filmy netting used in veils and petticoats) over your plants. The netting is usually nylon and dirt cheap. Tulle is so filmy and thin that it doesn't shade the plants very much, nor does it hold in heat and accidentally scald plants on sunny days. It will discourage many birds since it tangles their feet and is hard to impossible to peck through. Second, divert bird traffic to a bird bath so they can get a drink from somewhere else. This can be as simple as a shallow wide bowl with some rounded pebbles piled within and an inch of water or an honest-to-goodness Victorian flight of fancy. Whatever your style and budget dictates. By distracting them and draping your plants, you will suffer far less bird damage.
Ahhh sorry! I need to travel to these areas to understand them better. What would you say about Martha's Vineyard & Cape Cod? - do they have similar styles or differ? I'd love to hear your thoughts 🤗🤗

Add pinwheels or small ornaments that move easily in the wind works like a charm to help scare away your garden birds. Loved the video. 🌺❤🌺
Oh thank you Dear! You may have just saved the garden 😅🙏💓
I’ve loved this style for years and didn’t know it was a thing until recently.
Thanks for sharing ❤❤
No worries! It's a truly timeless style 💙🌊🐚

This sounds very much like a relaxed Hamptons look or the way the Australians interpret the Hamptons look
I like that, "relaxed Hamptons" 💙🐚 This is more my vibe than the curated hamptons cookie-cutter interior lol
