I’m not a police expert but that sure seemed like a bad call for whoever was in charge to not authorize that pit. He had a such a good chance with no traffic around but they didn’t give him permission and let the RV drive onto the highway into the oncoming lanes, endangering way more lives.

There is a lot of things that go into play when they are in this scenario. Old cars are police officers that want a new car will be lead car. If nobody wants to damage the car, you still have the opportunity to have more officers on the gravy train. It's healthy and builds Brotherhood characteristics when they all get to play together and work as a team. It also eats up the clock. Have you ever seen a RV come completely apart when it leaves the road? It's a big mess. Perhaps they don't have a friend that has a tow truck company that will clean up the mess, if not the city will have to clean it up themselves. They like to award themselves so that they can get the pay grades and the stripes desired. They participate in random acts of kindness like this for their Valor. It's exactly like the military but the whole thing that they're supposed to be doing is different

"Permission to pit?" ...The most unwarranted question for permission in this scenario. The patrol car was already struck, tire is out and she's entering the freeway going the wrong way. That's an instant qualification for a P.I.T. anytime. Especially with that half mile wide open stretch and the angles he had before going onto a highway that already seemed to have enough problems that day.

"Permission to pit"? WTF, that's like asking if you can draw your pistol and return fire if you're being shot at! How ridiculous, that needs to be changed. The officer should be allowed to make that decision himself after all, he's the guy on scene risking his life, and can see the dangers up ahead. It should be his call to end the pursuit immediately if needed... Like when he asked the first time BEFORE the motorhome got on the freeway into opposing traffic!
By the time he was asking for permission the second time, the motorhome was already on the freeway and I don't know if he ever got an answer.
Who's he asking, someone sitting in an office?
If an officer is qualified to persue a suspect the wrong way on a freeway, qualified to fire his weapon at a criminal in public areas, then he should be qualified to determine when and where a pit manuever is acceptable.
Driving against traffic in the lanes or on the shoulder is just an accident with a fatality waiting to happen.
I haven't finished the video yet...
    EDIT*
Just read through tge comments and I see I'm not the only one who commented on the officers' request to perform a pit manuever. This is in Michigan, huh? Yep, that explains it, so were my first set of in-laws too.

According to that news station, police arrested Mankel and her adult daughter Ilah Mankel, in Clinton County after Ilah was ordered to give up her newborn daughter but did not. Ilah was ordered to give up her custodial rights when the child was born and the infant was supposed to go into protective custody after an order was issued by the state. Michigan State Police said the family was aware of this but they took off with the infant anyway.
Police arrested Linda and Ilah who did not have the baby with them, but police were able to eventually locate the infant and return her to the Isabella Indian Reservation. Ilah was charged with parental kidnapping while Linda was charged with giving police a false name, resisting and obstruction of justice and possession of heroin.

I heard on a chase video recently that about 20 % off fleeing vehicles get away, sometimes because the police stop chasing for safety reasons.

    Permission to PIT?
No answer; we have terminal fear of litigation and suffer from chronic indecision.

Officer, you should have used the pit maneuver when you had the chance at the off ramp she used to get back on, and in the wrong direction. Screw permission from dispatch.

17:46 “ok, fine... I was just tryna go home....” said as if she’d been annoyed, at the officers, for having inconvenienced her, while she was simply minding her own business, doing nothing wrong 😂🤣

That didn't get past me either. It was as if she drove that entire chase, often against the flow of traffic, w/o even considering the danger to herself or anyone else...particularly the officer. And now he's just bothering her! One can only imagine the stupid movements she made after being stopped, reaching around in the cab and such...trying to get herself shot! Good on that cop for his nerves of steel and for the risk he took on himself to avoid having to hurt her. I know that's part of his job, but you you can see how hard some folks make that job!

Nice job officers and pitted in a safe spot with no collateral death or damage to the GP. Patience and determination are a virtue.

That was one of the worst places to pit a rv. Almost hit other vehicles while doing it.

Completely unbelievable behavior by this driver. From what I saw where the video picked him up during the Chase he probably endangered at least 7oo or 800 lives!!
Good job by all of the officers staying cool in a hot situation. 👍🏻

It's called a rolling roadblock. Once they pit the vehicle they have the option to either pit or rolling roadblock if speeds are right condition.

I can’t believe a STATE TROOPER has to ask his supervisor for permission to PIT a dangerous driver. She’s going the wrong way on a highway at high speed with blowouts. That’s a call any professional sworn officer should make or take his or her badge. That ramp was the perfect place for the PIT.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
