Awesome... My team and I are dissecting this video and making it work for our situation here in Ghana. Weddings can get quite chaotic here, especially with "cellphone shooters" boldly walking up to block your view and crowd the stage/front.... And they wont leave whether ask them nicely or forcibly. They are sometimes very close relatives of the couple. Siblings, aunties and even parents... But I am glad at least we can learn from the positioning and lens selections at every point.
I'm shooting 3 weddings this month, and they aren't my first but I'm still relatively new. I like your solo strategy. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
I've been out of the wedding scene since the early 80's, when I shot stills on film. But I've just been picked up by a still photographer as his second shooter for video and have my first wedding in two days. I needed to get my head back in the game and be prepared for every possible scenario as a single shooter. I've gotten so much out of your channel this past week. You've helped fill in so many gaps and provided immeasurable knowledge and inspiration for me. I felt compelled to write and thank you for it. I've subbed you on my other channel, which I check more frequently. Many thanks and best regards. :)
By far, the most helpful video on the internet to prep for my first solo wedding film. And I was able to capture alllll and more than I wanted. I did modify it (only because I was able to) I added a gopro hero 7 hidden in the arbor. It captured the whole ceremony in case I missed something and I got decent audio out of it. Craig, big thank you for this (and all of your other videos I have been watching.) I was able to shoot with confidence last weekend.
Thank you for that video. However, I still have a question, you mentioned in one of your videos that you make a couple of videos, one is pretty much the highlights of the wedding, 6-7 minutes video, and then you also make an extended version for relatives who couldn't make it. Can you explain or maybe make an episode explaining what do you have in an extended video version? Thanks.
great wedding tip for ceremony shooting. I been doing wedding video shoot for a long time but been using 1 camera. Now i have 3 camera and was looking for how to shoot with more than 1 camera so your video tip shows me enough. thank you!
Very helpful, Thank you! wish I stumbled upon this a couple days ago, shot my first wedding for a friend. Still turned out good, but I'm definitely coming back to this for reference! I think one thing I would add to this would be 2-way radios with earpieces so you can verbally communicate with multiple shooters, granted that you can pull it off. I'll try it out! haha Thank again.
This video is super-helpful for me especially as a solo shoot for friend's wedding at church this week. I realize there will be a lot of running around.
thanks soo much for the explanation bro. I have my first wedding booked in Dec. I planned on shooting alone...but this has me rethinking that...but gave me confidence of what it could look like doing it alone because I had NOO idea.
Great video man. As a beginner I've been looking for someone to help me understand the process from a floorplan-like perspective step by step. Very grateful!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in all aspects of the industry. Love your work, films and tutorials!!! I've started filming weddings/ birthdays/ christening last year. Going solo is hard and annoying. But now I have my partner shooting with me and we get a lot more footage especially for weddings. Following your RUclips channel has helped and inspired me a lot!!! You probably get these comments a lot, but I just want to say that you are helping a lot of people all over the world trying to make something for themselves... Keep up your great work!!! Greetings from Australia Mate!! :)
Wedding Film School I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm a 3rd year film student and I will be shooting my 2nd wedding this Sept. and you have a lot of great advice here! Can't wait for the "First Look" video!
wow.. thank you so much! I'm very grateful for your experience and willingness to help people like me succeed in this business which is not just a business to me but my passion and my life's work and legacy that I want to leave behind.
Lovin this, now you opened a series. Reception, Speech, etc... That dry erase board with the labeling of the lens is a nice touch. Still a one man team with 2 cameras. A Fixed wide and me moving. I still would like to see a "Low Light Indoor shoot" ; lens , lights, etc.. I use the 50 and the rokinon 35 cine lens for low light.
Thanks for the tips, especially the solo tips. I'm going to shoot solo for my girl's cousin wedding. It will be most likely just a highlight video because I don't have proper equipment like a microphone. The reason they want me to shoot their video because they liked the work I've done before. Photography & Videography isn't my profession at all, I just like shooting and editing stuff together. But they like what I did before but It's pretty basic as hell lol but it does show the important things like walking down the isle, ring exchange, vows and kiss. But I'll now try to get some guest reactions too and really walking around the ceremony thanks to your tips. It's going to be nuts but I'm ready. It'll be in Hawaii, I think outdoors, not sure but I'm ready. Thanks!
I have to say you are awesome for talking about your mistakes, it take a lot to do so! More power to you! I just started watching your videos, I have learn a lot from you and I enjoy them a lot! Thanks for taking your time to make them! P.S. I love your personality!
Can you make a video where you explain the pre-production of a wedding shoot? For example, talking to the clients, then talking to the event coordinator, and knowing if you can move around in the church while the ceremony is on going
Dude you have saved me! I've had a hard time trying to figure out where to be in certain spots and other videographers don't tell you. Thanks YOU SOOOO MUCH MAN! I will try it this Coming up Weekend at my next Wedding!
Are you filming in 4K? How do you deal with camera overheating? Especially outdoor weddings. I shoot on the Sony a6500 and Sony a7iii. Thanks! Helpful video!!
Haha, I think we've all been there! All I know is that zooms, teams and a handful of cameras is working much better than me going all Han Solo. Cheers to improvements! Thanks man.
Wedding Film School ;) Here here! Apart from my lack of trust for other shooters, I guess my fear is losing creative control. Even if the final product ends up great, I can't be proud of it because it doesn't represent 'me'. Selfish, I know. That's something I'll just have to either get over or remain a small operation for small weddings.
Amazing work, very helpful as im a 1st time wedding photographer. Everything came out amazing and the newly married couple LOVED the photos. WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE VIDS BY YOU. Easy and in depth and really answers all questions i had. You the man!
This information is great. I have been shooting weddings for awhile but I work with a photographer that has his own video and photography co. but I shoot the weddings. I always find out things at the last minute an hour before the wedding. Sometimes the setup is so odd and the bride and grooms backs are facing the crowd. I normally do over the shoulder shot from the officiant and hop back and forth. What would you recommend in that situation or tight spaces odd setups? Somehow I make it work but it could be better.
Thank you so much! I'm filming my first wedding this Saturday...solo...so it will be quite the task, but I think with your solo strategy, I will be able to get the shots I need!
you're a great teacher. I just have a question, since the dslr cameras have limited recording time, how do you keep recording without stopping? do you use magic lantern in your camera?
Thanks for shearing ...I just wish these methods can be this applicable for a typical Nigerian Wedding...(sad face)...1ns again am very grateful for the many useful information on your channel
Wedding Film School The major issue with a typical Nigerian wedding is time, location and poor organization factor Time: you have little or no time to get all reasonable details you want dew to the way our weddings are conducted. the sequence of event are as follows dressing up 2hr immediately followed by the church ceremony which will last for about 2-3hrs followed by 10-15min for photographs which is immediately followed by the wedding reception with will last for about 3-4 hrs Location-You get to a client house with VERY poor lighting little or no natural light coming in so you are forced to use artificial video light and crank you iso up considering you are exposing for a dark skinned person and the same with follows with the church and reception venue Poor Organization- Most times multiple photographers and cinematographers are present and you will probably be the only one using a dslr while others are using a regular video cam ... i believe you can imagine what will happen to you...PLS send me your email
Great, now all I need is a 70-200 or two! :) I shoot with a 2 person team most of the time, but occasionally 3 person. Since I'm using the GH4 for one or two angles I'll just do 4K on my 85 and allow for cropping, but I wouldn't mind having a nikon to m43 adapter along with my speedbooster so I can have an extended crop factor. Then a Sigma 18-35 in the center, either in the aisle or at the back of the aisle. I use these exact same methods except I've never thought of reserving a seat and sitting someone in the middle.
Totally! Haha, the 70-200mm cost will rack up so beware! Having 4k and micro 4/3rds crop will help tremendously. Yeah, this tutorial is mostly for full frame camera users but I'm glad you could get something out of it. And yeah, super easy to save a seat for the 2nd shooter and it's the best angle to get that groom sniffles. Thanks Antony!
tamjoe7 Yeah, I don't shoot 4k or use an external recorder so I'm glad Spencer could chime in! I have about 6 32GB SD cards when I'm shooting with Canon 6Ds
Congratulations on video !!! Very good all their movement. I would like here in Brazil it easier convercer the photographers that the video is as important as the photographs.
Jake Szetela hey! I was a rush... I went to the rehearsal, (two nights before the wedding) this helped to familiarize with the place I seen where I have to be when the real weddding started. ( the day of the wedding) things where abit faster than I thought. however the video came out great! I did have a small scene with unessesary zooming but other than that I believe that video came out okay. ( I used a( canon T5 with tripod) I used one personal mike (zoom 1) and a (gopro 4 with tripod) go pro was only used to record the back of the bride as she walked in. and to get reactions from mom to father in laws. alot to explaing. everything came out great. it's easyer than I thought . also watching this videos in this Adams channel (filmschool) helped alot. The rehelsal. that was easyer. u can predict when thing will happen. I did interviews of all the important family members and the. just finished with recording most of the traditional stuff that happens in wedding. I finished with and interview of the groom and bride. I asked them what they want to say to each other (ten years from now). It came out great. alot of editing though. (sorry I talk alot/write alot) FORGIVE MY MISSPELLINGS I hope this helps abit... Thank you for asking.
Thank you for the great info! My situation is usually this: I'm the primary shooter (volunteering at a friend's wedding) and I would enlist two more helpers. The helpers can do simple tasks such as manning stationary cameras and doing limited recomposing and making sure the footage continues to roll. I wouldn't count on them for running around doing slider or gimbal shots. I would probably have to modify your 3-person-team scenario and combine it with elements from 1- or 2-person-team. Do you have any suggestions or tips?
Brill. Thanks so much. Im shooting solo so it's great to hear tips for solo shooting as so many videos are always about multiple camera men. I think most people watching tips and tutorial videos are most likely noobs and solo shooters. ( could be wrong lol ) thanks man. Looking forward to the live stream. Missed the last one.
Great info my man. I'll be shooting my first wedding solo on a few weeks . And using two cameras. I'm hoping to get a second shooter but for now ill be running in the 100 degree sun solo. Your videos help me tremendously. Thank you
Gary King That's awesome to hear! Always great to hear that the videos are helping out in someway. Make sure to post the final video for us to check out! Thanks.
Wedding Film School OK, so did the first wedding on the weekend. A lot of lessons learnt, the main one being that I need to be able to react quicker when things don't happen as planned/expected. I had two cameras and lighting setup for the speeches when they started on the opposite side of the venue. And the reception was seriously lowlight (my fresnel hadn't arrived) and shooting at 1.4 was serious admin lol.
What do you typically do when you have wedding venues with camera location restrictions? Ex. Photo/video can only be shot from a balcony, outside aisle or back of the room. I have actually done a wedding where you could only have cameras in the balcony.
I done a solo shoot on Saturday just gone. It was extremely busy at the ceremony and i almost missed some important stuff. I was using just one camera due to my super low budget. I did have an assistant but it was a niece that needs alot of directing to get things done so that complicated the tasks. Another difficulty was the timeframes. The bridal party was due to be picked up in the limousine from preparation at the same time that the ceremony was due to start. My questions are, do you have any tips for managing a tight timeframe like this? And... How can we minimize the excessive cuts that will be inevitable when needing such fast changes in position at the ceremony while using just one camera?
I'm shooting my first wedding soon and i will be doing it solo. Also i only have 1 camera. I believe i can get all the necessary shots but can you or anyone here tell me if an additional camera on a tripod a must??
Charles Miner Well if you miss the kiss with your camera you sh*t out of luck. If you have a second camera you can cut to that. Not the best solution but I think it's all about backup and giving yourself some help
Thanks for share your expirience! In august I'll have my first wedding as a videographer and my plan was like your, a team of 2 ... and a photographer. Greetings from Uruguay!
This helps a lot to visualize my next wedding, which I’m doing solo! :S I’m so nervous, but you kind a make me feel more ambitious. Not having a plan sucks, now that you explained it this way I can focus on getting the best show. Thank you so much!
Would you consider using a hand held stabilizer like a Glidecam for the close up shots during the ceremony in front of the audience, why or why not? Thank you for your wedding videos, very helpful!
P. David Rij I use the glidecam for stabilized movement shots, not for stabilized hand held shots. I would use the glidecam during the ceremony for the processional as people are walking or if I want a sweeping wide shot of the entire location. Telephoto lenses on tripod or monopod are best for getting audience reaction shots or close up shots in front of the audience.
Hi, thanks for all of your videos - they are great! I have shot almost 300 weddings, many on my Canon C100 - the main reason I have yet to make the leap to the a7s ii is because I am worried about a memory card crash (the c100 shoots to 2 cards, the a7sii to 1). I have had a card crash before, and while I know it's unlikely, it is a possibility (and something that you can't have for a wedding shoot). I'd love your thoughts on this, and how you feel comfortable shooting on just one card with the A7s ii....
Hi Kraig love learning from you, my question is what if the church is small and there is no room to move around. I ask because I had this issue yesterday and wasn't a great ceremony?
thats what i have been done by my self Really crazy. and now i can work with start sec Sutter so i can make more better. ty for show up this kind plan :)
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! you're videos are all amazing! you explained everything very well! now i dont have to struggle next time on my weddings anymore :)
i use a dslr but when i need to move or the groom and bride are moving i have refocus, this the only isdue i have. i can always use infinity on the lens but not sure if that's a good idea.
Very helpful, just wondering, in the solo shoot, when you are backing up with the camera as the bride and groom leave do you use a steady cam or just walk back with it handheld? Thanks
This video is very helpful, thank you. I have another question, In your movements especially with one shooter, you showed walking from the front of the audience on the side, say to shoot the bride, back all the way around to get to the other side to shoot the groom. For a small outdoor wedding would you ever walk behind the bride and groom to change sides rather than walking around the back?
P. David Rij I'm sure I have done it before but I try not too. I'll always take the extra 10 seconds to walk around because I don't want to distract people. How we do our job is as important as what we shoot. Gotta be a filmmaking ninja!
Wedding Film School Actually I havent watched all of your videos. I have a lot of question but I'm sure that next videos will cover most of that, so I'm just going to watch all you other videos. Be sure that if I'll have any question I won't be afraid to ask. Thank you and keep doin'!
Thank you!!! Very helpful! I am in the process of getting gear to become a videographer. I just bought a Sony Alpha a7S II. Do you recommend the use of gopro's for extra coverage when shooting a wedding solo?

The solo tips were really helpful. Thank you!
I'm shooting 3 weddings this month, and they aren't my first but I'm still relatively new. I like your solo strategy. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

All of this info is coming soon! Keep checking back good sir. Thanks!
What camera do you use for the second camera that's always recording? As we all know, DSLRs barely record as long as 10-15 min. Thanks!!
Very Practical and I love the way you draw it out. I have to do a wedding by myself today lol, its gonna be crazy

I did interviews of all the important family members and the. just finished with recording most of the traditional stuff that happens in wedding. I finished with and interview of the groom and bride. I asked them what they want to say to each other (ten years from now). It came out great. alot of editing though. (sorry I talk alot/write alot) FORGIVE MY MISSPELLINGS
I hope this helps abit...
We filmed our first wedding this past weekend and this was super helpful. :D Thank you so much. (2 shooters, 2 cameras)
Great info my man. I'll be shooting my first wedding solo on a few weeks . And using two cameras. I'm hoping to get a second shooter but for now ill be running in the 100 degree sun solo. Your videos help me tremendously. Thank you
This is so useful, I'm getting ready to shoot my third wedding. It sucked. Watching this I'll be prepared
Love it!
Whats the kinda of focusing you use on the camera while recording ? Do you go manual ? Thank you so much, your tutorials helps quite a bit !!
rly rly helpful , your videos / behind the scene looks amazing too ,... thank you
I love your video and its very helpful.. thank you.
Great info - thanks very much. Got my first wedding in a few weeks so this'll help me develop a decent strategy.
Thanks a lot for the tips! How do you resolve the limit 30 minutes of DSLR between every shot?
Best wedding tip video I have seen! AWESOME!!!!
Great stuff. You are giving us really helpful information. Thank you.
Glad it's helping! Any ideas for future episodes or questions that you might have? Comment here or tweet us at @wedfilmschool
Makes sense man I just can't afford buying a 2nd camera right now. I might have to ask a friend to lend me one.
Thanks for share your expirience!
In august I'll have my first wedding as a videographer and my plan was like your, a team of 2 ... and a photographer.
Greetings from Uruguay!
Shooting as a second in a few weeks... This was a huge help.
If you're shooting with just one camera should I just stay in the middle of the pew to get everything?
This helps a lot to visualize my next wedding, which I’m doing solo! :S I’m so nervous, but you kind a make me feel more ambitious. Not having a plan sucks, now that you explained it this way I can focus on getting the best show. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the help really appreciate it keep doing what u do bro
Awesome! I'm shooting my first wedding with my fiancé next week and this was helpful
Can I double like it? It's so helpful! Thanks!
very good info. I know its good to shoot manual but in fast pased weddings do you usually use full auto for speed purposed? thanks
Lux MediaSD Glad to hear! Nice to hear that the videos are helping you!
this is SO helpful thank you
i use a dslr but when i need to move or the groom and bride are moving i have refocus, this the only isdue i have. i can always use infinity on the lens but not sure if that's a good idea.
Wow awesome video. Thank you for sharing your skills. What do you do for audio? Do you have lavs on the bride and groom?
Gotta be a filmmaking ninja!
thanks man this is what im looking for, I'll be starting to shoot wedding films soon
Loved this man! Really in depth. Keep it up!
God damn, thank you for this video. You just shows your wedding know-how. So good tutorial, good job.
***** Thank you! Glad to hear that the videos are helping in some way. Do you have any questions or ideas for future topics?
Wedding Film School Actually I havent watched all of your videos. I have a lot of question but I'm sure that next videos will cover most of that, so I'm just going to watch all you other videos. Be sure that if I'll have any question I won't be afraid to ask. Thank you and keep doin'!
Very helpful, thanks! Do you ever use a glidecam for the ceremony? If so, at what moments?
Just got hired for my first wedding in December. This was extremely helpful
How did it go? How big wast he wedding?
This video was very very helpful as i am working on improving my businesses quality of video so thank you very much
+M.O.V.E. Video Productions You're very welcome! Do it up! Make dat business super awesome!
How do you manual focus on both cameras ? When shooting alone with 2 cameras or you use auto focus ?
Thank you!!! Very helpful! I am in the process of getting gear to become a videographer. I just bought a Sony Alpha a7S II. Do you recommend the use of gopro's for extra coverage when shooting a wedding solo?
So monopod is to shoot it your solo?
I'm shooting a wedding at sunset/night, would you recommend shooting with a telephoto lens still or a prime for low light?
