Mower starts and then dies - Easy DIY Fix

- This mower would start then shut off after a few minutes. Many DIY's will change the fuel filter, then fuel pump, and finally possibly carburetor without even considering fuel lines. Fuel lines are just too simple and maybe denial is real. The fuel lines are known to deteriorate after a few years with today's ethanol and other additives in gasoline. This mower is around 10 years old and that was the problem here. Good luck on your DIY repairs and let us know if this helps you repair your mower. This should work for any older (6-10+ years) gasoline power equipment with rubber fuel lines. YMMV, have a great day and be safe!
Excellent video! Very informative. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and your comment! Have a great day and be safe!
Good job. Nice info you shared
Thank you for watching and your comment! Have a great day and be safe!
good video and job i don't know why they don't make better fuel lines. i have had lot's of trouble with the new desiel fuel eating of rubber fuel lines and injector pump o rings. take care, be safe and well.
Thanks! I agree, I never remember fuel lines falling apart back in the day. Obviously something changed with either the fuel or the lines. Have a great day and be safe!
Thank you 🙏 for this video 👍👍
Thank you for watching and your comment! Have a great day and be safe!
Wow! It was that easy!!
Yes! Thanks for watching and commenting. Fuel lines are something easy to overlook if they aren’t leaking but more and more we are seeing them fail. Have a great day and be safe!
Good video I was thinking on mine maybe plugs but after looking at fuel the filter with the bubble mine is going the same thing. Thanks
Thanks for watching and your comment. Glad it helped and hope you get it back to running well! Have a great day and be safe!
You said in the video that the old lines did not appear to be clogged or collapsed. Then why didn't the mower run before like it does now?
Thanks for watching and your comment. They didn’t appear to have anything wrong from the outside. The inside was falling apart and had loose pieces of rubber flaking off. They were definitely bad on the inside just not visibly from the outside. Thanks again, have a great day and be safe!
Great video, thank you. I did this and it still dies, BUT later than before. Any thoughts? My yard is about to get out of control.
Thank you for watching and commenting. If it got better you must be onto something. Did you replace all rubber hoses including the vent ones, if not do that first. After that the usual things like fuel filter and possibly pump. Good luck and let us know what it ends up being. I am sure you will figure it out! Have a great day and be safe!
I’ve done everything else possible and have this same problem. Getting ready to do this today, hope it fixes the issue!
Thanks for watching and your comment. I hope that fixes your mower too! I just used this one yesterday and it’s still running perfectly after doing this fix! Let us know how it turns out for you. Have a great day and be safe!
Nice video! I think I may have a similar problem. If I disconnect the fuel line from the carb all the gas flows out very fast from the line. But when it’s connected to the carb it dosent seem to flow as well. Fuel filter stays below half full as well
Thanks for watching and your comment. Sounds like it definitely could be bad lines. Hope you get it fixed up. Let us know if that works or what you find out. Thanks again, have a great day and be safe!
@@CopperBarnHomestead got her running today. Turns out it was the solenoid on the bottom of my carb causing the issue! I clipped it off and now she runs like a charm
@@dylancarlton4249 awesome!!! Glad you got it sorted out! We appreciate you letting us know what fixed yours, something else to check is always good info! Have a great day and be safe!
Hi there! Great video! I have the same issue and have replaced fuel pump and filter. If I blow through the air line it travels easily to the carburetor. If I remove the air line and blow directly into the tank from the nozzle, it’s darned near impossible to get air into the tank. Should air move freely into the tank? Thanks!
Hi, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I’m not 100% sure exactly what you are doing in your testing but generally yes any of the fuel or vacuum lines should be unobstructed and easily have air pass through them. These fuel lines deteriorate from the inside and start to break down making them not flow fuel or air depending on the line. The problem we had was fixed by replacing all the lines. I tried to determine which exact one was blocked but wasn’t able to tell. Replacing all (which is still only 3 or 4) the fuel and vent lines fixed the problem. The mower is still running perfectly today from this fix. Best of luck! Let us know how it works out for you. We appreciate you watching and commenting and hope you have a great day! Be safe!
@CopperBarnHomestead. Will this repair work on most riding mowers. Just bought a used one and seem to have the same issue (I've replaced the spark plug, fuel lines from the tank to carb, and battery so far.) Waiting on a new carburetor today. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and your comment. It has a good chance if yours is acting the same way. The newer fuel line or the newer gas just eats those lines up and then they collapse from the inside and block flow. So it should work. Good luck and let us know how it comes out. Have a great day and be safe!
@@CopperBarnHomestead thanks. I'll be replacing the rest of the fuel lines today, while I wait on the carburetor kit to arrive. Blessings.
@@tremaynecummings8612 Did this work for you? Or did you have to change the Carb?
Can you please share what hoses you used in the video by chance? I have a D125 that does the same thing and I've replaced the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, etc with no luck.
Thanks for watching and your comment. This one used 1/4” id and 3/16” id. Good luck with your repair. I think replacing the lines will definitely help. If it has a vented fuel cap that might be another possibility but those lines definitely deteriorate and block fuel and or the vent, which starves the motor for fuel. Let us know what you find out. Have a great day and be safe!
Great Video! I have a z375r with a 25hp Briggs. I can use it for about an hour or so and then it will start to run just like you show in this video. Let it sit for a few minutes and it would run maybe 10, 15 minutes and start poorly running all over again. I strapped a temporary tank on the arm rest for gravity feed and bypassed the fuel pump. It runs great. I had a new fuel pump, so I put that on but haven’t used it yet. I know it’s between the fuel tank and the carburetor. The fuel line on the exterior looks good. It’s not degraded or soft. Maybe that doesn’t mean anything. I’m going to replace the fuel line but I questioning the line that goes to what john Deere calls the Reservoir (EVAP Emissions) or the reservoir itself? I saw you replaced both the hoses. If the EVAP hose is plugged, will that be an issue? It takes more than an hour for any problem to happen. Lastly, can you give me the 2 hose sizes again please. Any thoughts?
Thank you for watching and for your questions! That evap line definitely needs to not be obstructed so the tank can vent properly. The line sizes on this one are 3/16 id and 1/4 id. Thanks again and good luck on yours! Let us know when you get it fixed. Have a great day and be safe!
I believe your trick was my answer. Thank you. I can now cut lawn. It runs! Don't worry, I'll be back for more advise if this didn't work.
@@patrickschley6418 great to hear! We are just glad to be able to help out where we can! Have a great day and be safe!
Is there a hose that goes in the tank from the air line? I don’t know what exists after the nozzle on the outside of the fuel tank.
Awesome video!! How would I know what size hoses are on my JD z530m?
When I feed a hose thru I put a bolt in it to keep dirt out 😊
Great tip! Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a great day and be safe!
What happens to the fuel lines when they get old. I think i have a venting issue, but i have what seems to be a venting box with multiple hoses. Can these boxes be cleaned and what do they do. Thanks
Thanks for watching and your comment. The lines seem to break down from the inside keeping fuel or air from being able to pass through. I have seen the boxes you are talking about but they didn’t appear have any way to service them. Replacing the lines took care of the issue. Good luck, have a great day and be safe!
I have a JD 318 that was repowered with a Kawasaki FD620D and it will die after an hour's use. The only way to make it run is to choke it until it comes out of it which is indicated by black smoke. I've replaced all the fuel lines except for the one going into the pump, replaced the pump and rebuilt the carburetor and it still dies after an hour. I keep thinking it's vacuum related but I'm going to replace the one remaining older line and see if that does the trick.
Thanks for watching and your comment! I hope that does the trick for you! Please let us know in the comments what you find out! Have a great day and be safe!
Any luck?
@@loragoff1969 I forgot I left this comment lol... Yes it is fixed now. The fuel line was the culprit. The surprising thing is that the old line was a Gates brand, which is the crem de la crem of rubber products (hoses, belts, etc.), but I guess even the best of the best goes bad at some point.
This just started happening to me with my Z355r. Has anyone who had this issue tried the hoses and had success?
Thanks for watching and your comment. It worked on this one and it’s still running great! Good luck! Have a great day and be safe!
@@CopperBarnHomestead ordered the hoses. Let's hope this it all it takes!
@@dinoderobertis2698 awesome! Let us know how it works for you! Good luck! Have a great day and be safe!
Great time to replace the vacuum hose to valve cover also, there AllWAYS bad and can cause same problem
Thanks for watching and commenting! Great tip! It’s running great now but next time I have it over I will definitely do that.
Stens has great fuel hose and eBay and Amazon is junk
I guess power washering the mower was optional when I saw that you didn't woush the mower when you got done fixing it it littery trigger my ocd when I get done with a mower I power washer the mower be for I give it back to the Customer just so I can get repet costumer service you should try that bro.... sincerely..... A Simple Thing To Replace, Good On You For Fixing It
However I Would Have Pressure Washed Everything Before I Started Working On It.
I Don't Know Why People Don't Pressure Wash Things While The Mower Is Pulled Apart ?
I Guess It's Just Called Being LAZY

Mine is a yr old and does the same thing , got a new car it worked for a bit the back to quitting new fuel filter and pump so I'm stumped?? Going to change the lines and use car gas line to bypass the b.s. any ideas are helpful
Thanks for watching and your comment. That sounds like a good way to help diagnose the problem. Someone else suggested in the comment it could be caused by the exhaust gaskets so maybe check that next. Good luck and please let us know what you find out. Have a great day and be safe!
Did you change lines yet?
by the way the possible other problem could be an exhaust leak those gaskets are junk
Thanks again! Excellent tip!
use fuel lines for a car end of fuel line problems JD is seriously going down hill Kubota is killing them with basic stuff alone and all the rental yards are dropping John deer because of there antics of making it difficult to work on there now garbage, dont get me wrong I like my zero turn but so far as soon as i get the chance im going to kubota
Thanks for watching and the comment. I totally understand. We have a kubota mower that is the best we’ve ever used. Have a great day and be safe!
