    I know it's your opinion and all, but I think it's worth at least pointing out that in real life, anything being lifted into place by a crane will require a LOT of manual guidance too. Cranes are only precise up and down, their main job is to lift heavy stuff.

    • @Metagross555
      @Metagross555 6 лет назад +1

      They're precise on an X-Y axis, but yes, guidance is needed for lining things up exactly.

      @@Jiw307 no matter how good your hand signals are, nothing is rigging up or unhooking itself. Cranes still require quite a bit of manual labor

    I think you are a bit harsh on the model. I really like how it looks and it also seems to be way more playable than 42055. You aslo said that most of its 4000 pieces are beams. Well, that's true for the most of technic sets. Nice review anyways!

    • @VioIetShift
      @VioIetShift 6 лет назад +7

      I agree. Now, 42055 is still the model I show people when I say "I'm into Lego" and they give me quizzical looks.
      But 42082 is just a fun model. It's exactly what it says on the tin: a giant crane that can lift heavy things.

    • @jltworks3167
      @jltworks3167 6 лет назад +1

      Rince yeah this is a nicely made model! Love the looks but we can all agree the boom extension has a very “high-stress” design

    • @HarrieWorst
      @HarrieWorst 6 лет назад +2

      As always it’s just up to taste. I have just a weak spot for cranes, and I actually like this crane. I too had hope for a mobile high tower crane, I still hope one day they will make it. On the other hand, I’m not that fond on 42055. Would rather have had a giant mouth mine shovel/crane in a better colorscheme. It’s a very clever set nonetheless. And I see Sariel’s point in 42082. It’s basic in functions and just the least you would expect. But full remote and suspension would have quite a negative effect on both price and complexity. I think they want to keep flagship models into their standard range of pricing, and not up to the Porsche and Bugatti pricing level.

    • @jltworks3167
      @jltworks3167 6 лет назад +1

      Patrick van der Meulen yeah, the Porsche and Bugatti are licensed too, the crane is actually rather realistic compared to real life replicas and the colour red is a nice change to yellow, although the only thing that would be nice is a fly Jib which you can attach to the side of the main boom and take it off to attach it to the top of the boom extension to make it taller, it’s also quite impressively tall when fully extended.

  • @Kelkschiz
    @Kelkschiz 6 лет назад +116

    I think the LEGO designer did a good job, they just picked the wrong vehicle to model. A flagship set needs a bit of a wow factor which this set lacks. Still if got this set a kid, I would be more than happy with it.

  • @TechnicDragon
    @TechnicDragon 6 лет назад +8

    The rubber bands are not just engine parts, they are working as a breaking system for the whinch and the outrigger extension. So you can't force them down when the selector is in neutral position

  • @OctoBooze
    @OctoBooze 6 лет назад +65

    A bit harsh on the crane there... Bashing its looks and even the headlights. The design is solid, almost seamless work in comparison to most new sets.
    Just because you expected a giant crane with luffing jibs and whatnot doesn't mean the actual crane you got is a weak set.

    • @searme
      @searme  6 лет назад +10

      Please, even $20 Lego sets come with headlights these days. The biggest Technic set ever, priced at $300, could at least bring one new piece or one brand new function.

    • @OctoBooze
      @OctoBooze 6 лет назад +20

      That they do indeed. Just saying that some of the critique just seems like nitpicking for the sake of negativity. "Realistic, but extremely ugly". Can't really see that as anything but "Well it's good but I hate it anyway" kind of comment. I do agree with many points you made and would've wanted a different model as well but bashing the model for being ugly duckling and whatnot just comes across as simple disappointment and anger instead of objective reviewing that I've come to love about your channel.

      It wouldn't make much sense from a "realistic" perspective. The pads are there to distribute the pressure on a larger area. If you use a pad with four small points of pressure, it's better off to use the outriggers directly.

    I didn't buy this set until a month ago because of this video. To be honest, this is a great set. 1 meter boom extension, complex control, complicated gear box, all are appreciated. 1. The crane could be licensed from Liebherr
    2. The boom extension should in reality really be 3
    3. The boom would go down flat
    4. There could be an engine cover for the pistons
    5. If the outriggers did not go diagonally and rather extend horizontally then vertically
    6. There could be a separate fly jib that some rough terrain cranes have

    I like how all of the functions are completed slowly because it gives me time to react when operating it, also the little cabin is (irl) placed with people that actually help guide the parts in. If you want a challenge try moving a shoe around (not only does this show how strong the thing is, it also shows why the outriggers and the counter weight are so important, also it shows why I like how the thing is slow because it allows for a slower reaction time and it makes things so smooth)

    I enjoy having so many functions run by a single motor, because i know many people will try to find ways to get as many motors as you have functions, to radio control it. Like ultimate 42009 or 8043 fullrc

    I'm always sorry that I never bought 42009. I was looking forward to pairing this next to my 42042. I think it looks great but I wish they'd put two motors in it, one for the superstructure and one in the chassis and given us a remote control. It would have really increased playability. Suspension would have been amazing but considering the weight of this model they'd have had to design new suspension system which is why it would have been amazing but with extra cost.

    I am not an avid collector of the Technic sets, and haven't done so in years with college taking precedence. With my collection lacking behind, I decided to pick this up. With its high piece count, many of which are not in my collection, it will give me the chance to remedy that. Also, I am thinking of building a truck chassis to mount the upper part of the crane to, much like a modified 8868, with an orange peel claw like on the 42042.

    Hey, excellent review. I appreciate you being objective about everything including your opinion on the looks (an opinion I don't share but it's good to know). Also you're one of the only Lego-tubers that seems to have any kind of idea how a crane actually works (I facepalm every time I see somebody lift with the boom). I'm going to buy this kit because it appeals to me, particularly because everything is operated from one motor. It was really interesting to see that the single motor feature was a con for you but that doesn't make either of us wrong. Lastly, the rodent was quite adorable, it gave me a little anxiety that he/she was close to the moving parts though but that's just me, I'm sure you are quite careful with your little buddy! Cheers!

    It’s not a ‘cabin’. My uncle is a carpenter and makes site offices for construction sites. He is required to supervise the delivery of said site offices to the worksites which is normally achieved by transporting them via trucks and unloading them with this crane. My dad and I have watched the offices being put in and heard stories of them going wrong. This appears to be a site cabin, but less complete (no roof, etc.), which is why my dad and I are excited for this set, having had experience with the real life equivalent. When I first saw this set I was underwhelmed by everything but the sheer size of it. Now that's not an unusual reaction for me, and I am routinely pleasantly surprised by sets I have this reaction to once I build them. However, your evaluation of this set has confirmed my fears that this really isn't flagship (or $300) worthy.
    I just finished re-building 42009 (Mobile Crane mk2). That was a flagship, and worth every penny, and it can be somewhat compared to this set:
    - It was the biggest ever at its release
    - It was a crane on wheels
    -Same PF components, same double LA setup for raising the boom
    However:
    - Its outriggers were far superior
    - It had four steering axles, with three different steering angles
    if you hold them side by side, 42082 has fewer features, a more complicated gearbox, and is bigger.
    Four years since 42009 came out. This doesn't feel like progress to me, and it is definitely not going to open my wallet

    Thanks for the review!
    Actually, having no suspension is typical for rough terrain cranes. Typically, one axle is connected directly to the frame, and the other one is pivot mounted. These machines are not meant for driving on roads - they are shipped between jobsites by truck and only drive within the site. So having any springs or so on this model would not be correct.

    Good review. I feel like Lego has done the same types of models over and over and over again. This one was a different design, but still a crane. I would like to see more creative models in the Technic arena. I love seeing new parts & great mechanical solutions, but put into a more original piece of machinery.

      @@searme This set wasnt terrible. It just wasnt unique and didnt have new pieces, but that shouldnt affect how good the set actually is. Many other revolutionary and great technic sets are hardly available anymore, so in that aspect the factor of having new pieces should not matter at all - only what pieces it does have, hence i think the pieces should have 4/5 or more, because the pieces can be quite useful for MOCs. I think you went pretty hate mode on this set

    I quite like this model, even though the functions could have been better. I think I'll get it later... I really want some high-grade LEGO Technic model. As a kid I only had some of the small models with like 200 parts at best. Anyway, do you think these models would benefit from some steel (or aluminium) parts in the drivetrain such as gears and even some links? Some of the gear connections in the model (e.g. boom extension) look quite flimsy to me.

But its just a toy. How can you say its not a good model? I think its awesome and the colors are great. I drove one of these and it had gay blue and red. it looked horrible. The balck and red is super.

    • @searme
      @searme  6 лет назад +11

      Maybe because they know that I've been reviewing all Technic sets for 5+ years and have plenty of experience and many points of reference, so I'm probably in better position to objectively judge this set than someone who gets excited over "balck and red". Also, I have explained thoroughly my opinion on this set, and you're free to disagree with it.
