    One of my favorite aspects of these videos is how you keep in mind and actually discuss the fact that we look back with the benefit of hindsight. Most historians I've read don't seem to give that point it's due. People like Valens don't make decisions they think will result in disaster, they act based on the information at hand and what they think they are capable of just like we do now.
    Also, I want to point out the thing about not wanting to share the glory of a victory is a valid concern in their times. Glories from war were an important influence in a persons political and military life. Not being able to win your own victories makes you look weak both to those barbarian tribes and to your political competition. We poo poo it nowadays because WWI and WWII traumatized us away from thinking of warfare as "glorious" because those were such horrid conflicts, but back then it was the norm and leaders were expected to fight and win their own battles to prove their worth.

Good luck with your FE exam if you haven't taken it yet, it's tough but i know you'll be able to do it! Earning the title as an engineer in training is something i'll always remember. My answer to this was simple, Valens should of waited for his nephew with a larger force to support him.
    The Goth's supply line was that of plunder and not of living of the land.
    They could of been denied plunder if Valens had order a scorce land policy, and deny the Goth's supplies, their for weakening the Goths resolve to fight.
    That's what I think.

    Very nice vid as always but I do regret that you minimize the importance of the barbarization of roman armies. Not that I wish to make a political point by saying so but it is obvious that the legions were unable to cope with so many threat when so few romans were ready to get up and defend what was theirs. Every roman defeat eventually provoked massive desertions of Goths, Alamans, Huns and Alans mercenaries while every roman victory became unexploitable since the barbarians generals that obtained them generally used them afterwards to secure personnal power. The sack of Rome in 410 AD is basically the story of an unsatisfied 'general', the goth Alaric while the last great roman victory at the Catalaunic Fields against the Huns in 451 is also, in fact, a germanic victory that lead to the final loss of Gaul.
    Its also not true to say that most of these barbarians were romanized while integrating the empire's army : it's in fact the very opposite. Some legions actually replaced their eagle by steppe tribes standards (A wooden poll with a horse tail tied to it). The gladius disappeared in favor of the longer spatha, copied from germanic swords. Many officers with a very poor knowledge of latin were promoted. And as you already mentionned, heavy cav became a very important component of the roman army, which meant the massive inclusion of nomadic or half nomadic tribes that didn't care one bit about the greco-latin lifestyle.

  • @geemanamatin8383
    @geemanamatin8383 6 лет назад

    kinda funny. I play Attila as western roman empire. and despite all the rebellions and barbarian attacks ive managed to hold onto a good deal of the empire (Lost England), however the eastern roman empire lost virtually all of Greece and is losing its own wars against rival powers.

  • @Boyan67

    Goths are a variation of Getae- Thracian not Germanic nation. Contemporary Bulgarians and Romanians are arguing if Goths are there forefathers. Professor Gancho Tsenov wrote in Berlin a paper "Goths or Bulgarians?" His conclusions where based on ancient sources and sources from the Vatican library plus the strikingly large number of Bulgarian names among Gothic aristocracy. Therefore the Balkan music playing at the scene of the approaching the Danube border Goths was very appropriate.

    • @dandondera2618
      @dandondera2618 5 лет назад

      No sane Romanian historian would consider Goths equal to the Getae. This confusion comes from Jordanes who tried to make Goths more "noble".
      And for Gods sake, decide already what you, Bulgarians are: Slavs, turk Bulgars, Thraco-Romans or... Goths

    • @InvictaHistory

      Setting up shots in battle is just a matter of putting together a custom battle of your choosing and making your troops perform certain actions. You then place the camera just right and record it with Fraps. For some cool camera work you just need to make sure you set your camera movement / turn speed way down. For editing I just use a mid tier program called Power Director

    There was a time, before Rome was divided, when the history of Europe could be measured in dynasties. Most of the region was united, and massive walls were beginning to be erected to protect against the rest. Sound familiar? It would seem to me that there was a time when Europe and China may have had parallel histories.

    This is great, the machinima is done so well, the only thing that needs work is VO. I recommend not reading off a script, but instead when you have finished writing the script you should immediately start practising with it. Play with the words you use and the way you say them, modify the script as you go along. Once you think you know your script well enough to basically do a stage performance in front of hundreds of people, then you should start recording. Record in approx 2 min chunks, do as many takes as you require until you are 100% happy, then move on to the next chunk. Remember that when you do VO, even with historical documentaries you are acting. Do this and you'll have a AAA level documentary on your hands. I hope this helps.

      @Kenneth Knoppik The Limes did work though.
      The Chinese wall was just not ment for such a task and nor was it used appropiately to act as a defense against real invasions.

    dude i really love your documentaries and this video is no exception.Keep up the good work.Total war games have inspired me to read about historical events too.I am looking forward to the 3rd part PS1:Since we are interested in that era the last couple of months cause of Attila,a nice idea would be to make a similar video about the battle of the catalaunian fields :) PS2:forgive me for me english,english is not my mother language

    This series reminds me of an old show. Forgot the name, but it was on history channel a long time ago. I fucking miss it. They used Rome 1 as footage for recreating ancient battles.

    I really appreciate your commentary during the last minute of the video, where you mention how easy it is to judge military commanders in hindsight. I think history is 50/50 facts and perspective. Well done.

    The History Channel only makes a few shows. Most are made by contract media firms, some as small as 4 people. Less overhead, less expensive. Big media is losing out, the internet firms are taking over. Good!

    0:20 - 0:23 it sounded like you lagged then started talking again lol. And it sounded like you said "protecteh..." but I think you meant "protected" lol. Are you a robot or did I catch a change in the matrix?

    we can and should judge him. he left save walls for an enemy detatchment that most likely wouldnt have grown again, since the reason for them splitting up was the food supply. instead, he should have atacked the ones at the hill pass who moved slowly. capture the families and force a surrender.
