    So this is where Tolkien got his idea for the battle of helmsdeep with horses unexpected charging in the flank from.

      Juul King This wasn't the first time it happend though. At the battle of alesia, Julius Ceasar had his cavalry hiding in the woods and then charging into the gauls. That's how he won that battle. I think it is more based of that, then of this, as at the battle of alesia, the romans had much fewer troops then the gauls (about 1:25) just like they had in the battle of helms deep. In both battles the cavalry saved the battle by charging the back of the attacking army.

      Bada Boom You're exaggerating a little aren't you? The Austrians were doing quite well and most of the reinforcing army was Austrian and German...The charge was indeed the greatest charge in history TO THIS POINT but greater charges have been done since and and it did certainly not kill tens of thousands ot Ottomans

    Adding to the said in the video, the oval shield replaced the scutum because the legiones were now equipped with the long spatha sword instead the short gladius. although the stabbing technique could still be performed, the rectangular shield couldn't be used properly together with this sword.

    Looks like Bacurius pulled a Leeroy there...
    Imagine after the battle, Valens lying on the ground dying next to Bacurius:

    You address just about everything one could wonder about with clear illustration. Only thing as I understand it cataphracts were not a palatine unit just a class of armor. Clibanarii on the other hand seems like a colloquial term for a type of elite soldier and not a real class of troop or armor. I like how you show the diversity of arms too the axes plumbatae and maces. Tactics and roles were so diverse and thought out it deserves more attention than just ‘here’s a gladius.’

    Very reminiscent of the battle of Pelenor fields in a way. It's interesting how a laager defense with wagons proved a good bulwark against Romans just as it did in later centuries against Zulus. They ultimately moved out to fight in order to buy time, but still that would have slowed the Romans from pushing back.

    I always wondered why the shields, weapons, and armor changed so radically from the heyday of the Empire to late antiquity. I still wonder at some of the changes, but you did a really good job of providing several credible theories. And those plumbatae! Wow! It makes sense to ditch the pilae if you can have multiple throwing darts--though I wonder if they were as effective at disabling enemies' shields as the pilae had been. A shield hit with a plumbata lodged in it might have some added weight and imbalance on it, but wouldn't be nearly as disabled as a shield with a wobbly long stick affixed to it. And you'd think the enemy would be able to throw the plumbatae right back at the Romans.

    • @d.m.collins1501
      @d.m.collins1501 5 лет назад

      Hmm... and it also seems like this is a prime example of why the gladius was so good. If the horsemen were pressing the soldiers so tightly that they didn't have room to raise their swords, a shorter sword that could be used to stab would seem like a better fit. Though perhaps what's really going on here is that more and more of Rome's enemies had larger and larger numbers of equestrian fighters. Gladii are probably a lot better for killing soldiers who are on foot than killing a knight high above you with a range weapon.

    So what in the blazes was Valens thinking when he sought out those prolonged negotiations and talks. It ran counter to his initial stratagem of quick and decisive action. Also was the legions really that ill disciplined taking action before a command was decreed. I understand the barbarization of the legions but damn i can already see poor military discipline in the army.

    • @InvictaHistory
      @InvictaHistory  9 лет назад +2

      xaero xiii The initial encounter is not out of the ordinary for armies skirmishing while the rest of the troops deploy. It is also not unprecedented that troops or their officers would press an attack if they are eager for a fight and have been irritated just standing around doing nothing. Similar things have happened to a lot of different Roman commanders and it takes a really skilled general to be able to work around these situations

    • @marloyorkrodriguez9975
      @marloyorkrodriguez9975 6 лет назад

      Remember dude even great commanders like Julius Caesar and Alexander the great can't even maintain order on such a large army, that is the reason why the common military adage 'tactics don't survive contact with the enemy' should always be taken seriously

    Nice video, but you've got an outdated view on historical aspect which seems to come mainly from Edward Gibbon(18th century).
    "Barbarisation of the Army" No, it was in no sense at all being less effective but the battle was more of tactical disaster just like any previous Roman defeats.
    Romans had always been adapting from the people who were in contact and what could be best used by them.The Barbarian influences you're talking about here must have included Gladii, Spathae, chainmail, Gallic helmets, etc. Which were all inspired by the 'barbarians' like Iberian tribes, Celts. And in the Late Antiquity, they've adopted much of Persian and Nomadic people equipments and tactics. If the barbarians you're referring to are Germanic people, then I must say an opposite, it was the Germans who adopted much of Roman tactics and equipments.

    This series gives a clear picture of the battle and everything surrounding it. And as a verry pleasurable extra your eyes get very well created background video of maps troop movements and fight scenes. Evryting is good in sink, adding to the awsomeness.
    Documentaries like this would be praised by all viewers. Realy makes me think of the series "History Channel Decisive Battles" wich i loved when thay came out. I hope that this wil be pickd up and used for a real new documanary style!
    Most documentaries use small bands of reanactors and showing the speaker sitting or standing on the battlesite today. This is silightly dull and even boring altho the information might be right, visualy it is utter crap! Not entertaining at all for youth and new historical enthusiasts.
    Combinding Game visuals and good Information and a interesting start point in history. Wuld really help improving interest in History and Respect for all historical heritage.
    Especially with isis destroying allot of eastern historical information artifacts and landmarks. This is the time to increase the interest to protect all historical for the future.
