Feel like around 2004-2005, Top Gear hit a sweet spot of being informative yet entertaining and this challenge was a good example of it

there's something just really comfy about this era of Top Gear. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved every single episode of the Golden Trio's, but their earlier stuff was just a lot more chill and didn't feel so over-produced
Thats what i always think,after 2010-11,they chemistry or something on the show is changed.Dunno what it is also cant tell it the way i feel.
There’s definitely this hint of 2000s nostalgia to this version of Top Gear
I personally am more drawn to the specials that they did because I would often play them on my DVD player in bed before going to sleep whenever I would be scared shitless of something from a video or a film. But stuff like this does the job as well whenever I can't sleep.

Not quite. These are MPVs (or people carriers, or Dad’s minibus) which were popular for ten minutes back in the late nineties. The Crossover hadn’t really arrived at this point. Compared to an MPV, a Crossover is just as big outside, but no more roomy inside than the equivalent hatch and are even more expensive.
Kind off, they just taller, more expensive, worse to drive with better marketing for non car people

Also Top Gear: *reviews Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars costing a heck of a lot more than that*
All crossovers are are hatches that have had chunkier body panels put in, bigger wheels, and raised suspension. This makes them worse to drive, more awkward to get in and out, heavier, and more expensive, but people buy them in their thousands. Why?

This type of test and the convertible ones, i really miss them in the show. I know there is Car Buyer channel (subscribed already :D) and many others, but there is something honest about these tests. They are boring cars, but they kept it interesting to watch with a witty test and gave a real good consumer advice at the same time.
Yeah, I like it when the did this sort of thing, too.

+Random Stefan Its not about which one is best its about which one is safer and an unregistered driver like the ones on the uber service is just stupid. No one hitch hikes anymore for obvious reasons and yet for some reason some people think getting in an equally unknown car with an unregistered uber driver.
are you a taxi driver by any chance, you sound very biased. Uber drivers have the same background checks as black cab drivers. Also there are many more stories of cad drivers abusing their passengers. Please do use google before jumping to biased conclusions. Also stop taking a joke so seriously.

Indeed! In the 00s the were a huge amount of cars and car types to choose from! Now it all about Suvs and evs, the estate and saloons are dying, even the mondeo and passat is dead, i find it sad.

crazy to think this was 13 years ago now(2017) and I have this episode on DVD a lot of it is fairly edited.
also worth noting that both the Scenic and C-Max are no longer on the road.

They'll be press cars; usually pre-production models which are then crushed - but not always as the 645Ci from the Sandblast Challenge is still on the road.

hot damn, my parents bought the C-max a while ago. we're a family of tall leggy people, so the third seat is in the garage and its really nice and roomy, which is to say, we can actually fit without scraping our heads on the ceiling and sit without painful cramps. some trouble with the engine and the turbo after a few years, but it still runs today. honestly, being tall limits you in so many ways I don't get the envy. and 2000 more pounds is sometimes worth it when the alternative is discomfort and pain.

These 2 legends just killed off a car segment. I think not many car manufacturers do this tall hatchback after this shows they just focus on crossback or mini suv instead
James talking about all the stuff he had to go through to get his badge to go mini-cabbing back then and all I had to do was show my proof of insurance and get a background check to drive for Uber and that was it. Wild how the times have changed and the bar was lowered considerably.

The minicabs of London are often private cars and so can be of practically any make. Minicabs don't have taximeters, you pay a set price agreed upon before the trip. In my experience many minicab drivers do it for a bit of extra cash.
The real black taxis of London are a whole different story. They are very spacious with nothing the passenger can break. It takes years to get a license to drive a black taxi in London.
