A Skyline GTR. Edit: I'm going to explain what I mean. I don't get why people call every Skyline a GTR, since the R35 is one that has the main name of GTR. The main name for these Skylines is Skyline, so just saying GTR (which I thought only the R35 should be referred to as) is like calling a Ford Mustang GT Ford GT (but there's a already a Ford GT so it doesn't make much sense).

I’m not surprised at that result. The Peugeot is really heavy with all those speakers and monitors and video game equipment, whereas the Frog-Eyed Sprite was already lightweight to begin with, and they then stripped it down to barebones. It’s all down to the age-old quandary of a heavy car with more horsepower versus a lighter car that doesn’t quite have as much horsepower. Some car manufacturers, such as Pagani when competing against Lamborghini, possess the necessary tools to make their car light enough to get away with not having as much horsepower.
Hydrolics too!
It’s a similar thing to the concept behind the Mustang. Ford was never known for having as much horsepower as a Dodge, but the Mustang was lighter, birthing the aptly named “Pony Car” category.

I know. Luddites think that somehow old technology can beat new. It can't. Apples to apples, modern is just better. Of course it's not horsepower that wins but new materials, electronic assist and better efficiency.

At that time you could also get GT-Ss (rwd versions of R33s) for less than £10k.
Today its a lot different since now pretty much all Skylines of the '90s are considered classic.

I like the E39, it's one of the few BMW's I like (I'm not all that big a fan of the brand). Still, in terms of German sports saloons, I'd have a Merc C63 AMG for 34k euros (which is not much more than 26k pounds).

The Modern Classic would be the E39 M5. Too old to be considered a new car, too young to be a Classic.
What I am saying is, the 90s-00s introduced a few cars that are Pseudo Classics and they combined the best of both worlds. Normally, they would have my money.

It was supercharged, a normally aspirated A series 1275 at best would only produce around 70bhp.
Yeah it has to be a supercharger. They only made 45-65hp stock depending on what version engine the mark I Sprite had.

@Snow Wolf Tuners and ricers are not the same; tuners are modern day hot-rodders. In fact, they do all sorts of different modifications, such as turbo kits, transmission upgrades, and suspension upgrades. Rice is for looks, tuning is for speed.

The thing is, some car manufactures tone down car engines for smaller cars. So it can be the same engine as lets say, a 5 door sedan, but in a 2 door hatchback, the engine will be less powerful for safety reasons.

The 24-valve V-6 is weighed-down by all those techno-goodies. You can see it pushing through the corners. Take out the fancy accessories and the race would have turned-out the other way around. I'm glad it didn't though. That Sprite is cute as hell. What an adorable little car.

What I think TG tried to show is that the real car nuts are the old beards. I personally was amazed at the effort they put into making the car lighter and agile. Even if Hammond's group had used another car, I think the old car nuts would've deserved to win. When I grow old, I see myself like these guys.

Interesting that James and Richard seem to have swapped views on this in the years since. Richard's favorite car is Oliver, while James is quite excited by the new Honda Civic Type R. In several Top Gear and Grand Tour challenges (well at least one I can think of), Richard and Jeremy got old classics while James called them stupid and got a modern hot hatch.
With this challenge, I do wonder why the modern car did worse in turns than the old Austin-Heeley - had the young tuners not built the suspension for cornering well? Did all that money instead just go into the sound system, cosmetics, and gadgets? Maybe it really was nothing but a ricer.
precisely, they probably could've shaved 500+ lbs without all the technology, if they then stripped the car even further, it probably would've been like 1000lbs lighter in total, besides, it's a Peugeot, if they took the amount of money they spent putting useless gadgets in there, and spent it on a real car, they would smoke the healey and peugeot

The wet surface was a huge equalizer in this contest. My brother got fastest time of day in the rain at the Chimney Rock Hill climb once in the eighties, driving a Lotus type 61 Formula Ford (a relic, powered by a Ford Pinto motor). The next day it was dry, and all the modified hill climb special cars won the podium.

Actual reviews placed this car at 0-60 in more like 8 seconds, although with all the heavy mods and low profile tyres, I would add another 3 seconds.

That Cougar originally came with 16x6 on wheels and 205 series all season tires, I upgraded to 17x7.5 that are each 5lbs lighter, and 225 series summer tires.
It is also lowered on h&r springs, has stoptech slotted rotors, and ebc yellow stuff pads.
Around an autocross course it's more than a match for any similarly powered car.

TooTrueLamb It's a term that started when kids took Asian cars and modified them to "look fast" when they really didn't any extra performance over stock, an in a lot of cases, less performance due to added weight or worse handling due to a bad lowering job.

Mike Butt Sure they swapped the engine, but what's the point when they don't even make it produce more power? A 3.0 V6 is quite a heavy engine. The 2.0 I4 from the GTi-6 version of the 306 would have been the better choice. Almost as much power, with much less weight. And the I4 is more ripe for mods to the engine.

It's undoubtedly true the that Peugot was way heavier than the Austin, but I wonder how much the fact it was front wheel drive played into it with under steer in the corners effected its time...that and it certainly wasn't a purpose built car for a hill climb either.

It's not the weight. It was probably stock in terms of brakes and suspension. Also the tyres were probably not appropriate. I think it was just way too much

Im a teenager rather new too driving and i always loved the frog eye, such a cute car that looks fun to drive
My Grandfather has a story about the Sprite. Apparently one of his friends had one. They all made fun of him because it was tiny and not too fast. So he gets challenged to a race. My Grandfathers friend says "Ok, but I get to pick were we are racing!" And the Challenger accepts. He was then challenged to race in a dried out stream. My Grandfathers friend won through default.
To be fair the Healey was built for racing, while the Citreon is a show car.
