- An offer I couldn't refuse has led this Land Rover Discovery 3 to work it's way into my possession, what do you think? It's going to mean I don't have to rely on Vosa turning a blind eye when they see the Passat overloaded scraping by so that can only be a good thing I suppose...

We did a handbrake repair on my mates & it's no bother, these are built very well & when they're well maintained give great service . Loving the channel Ben,all the best 👍
Always been tempted by these, follow 'LR time' on here, crazy German guy and his wife they do a lot of great vids on the Disco 3 and 4 faults, snapped crank, oil pump etc..... Sure yours will be fine, besides, think of all the cool content 😏👍
Agreed. LR Time is an essential watch for any Disco 3 & 4 owner, if only as heads-up as to what you've got coming your way.... (OMG - in joke!) an entertaining channel.
@@baronridgeback And Range Rover Sport
20:53 We definitely need an O'Reilly's in the UK. It'd give Halfords a kick up the backside.
Super vid! Congrats on the Landy and looking forward to more Spitfire and Panhard content. Nice that you do cherish the old Passat, hope you can think of a nice retirement scheme, it deserves it.
Great video Ben thanks.
I'm pleased you got this, you clearly love it and it will be a great car for you. Looking forward to seeing all the fixes your having to do. This channels growing great and getting better . Well done.
That’s a beautiful colour and cheap as Chips at 3K. Poverty spec is less to break and less weight so my preference too. Great channel and lovely guy.
Good video...... had one for 5 years....great towing motor and really comfy...make sure all belts are done and keep well maintained. Good luck
Sun shade for windscreen. Not pop up tent lol. Great video
You can’t beat a Landie. Proper car and performs many purposes really well
As a 54 year old and 37 years of driving many many cars like you do Ben I can honestly say a bargain is never a bargain it’s normally focked , I hope in this case with yours it’s not to bad . Mine was a complete shit box everything was knackered on it
I'd love to see what it's like underneath.
Love the comment "it seems a bit more reliable " its a land rover who are known for unreliability. I know I have a 2016 D4 and I love it. Its the poverty model which I chose deliberately no sunroof ,yes ! no leather, yes !
You're the third youtuber I follow who's just bought a Disco 😊
I recently bought a Disco 4 and for the same reason, I need a capable tow car. Everything pointed to one of these, like you say they have a reputation for reliability and everyday I pray it won't through it's toys out of the pram.
So far so good, I'll be following closely 😊
hahahahaha mate your the first person I have ever herd saying a Discovery would be more reliable :) would love to know what the pickup is
What a beauty. I've got a P38 V8, more reliable than my 2022 Transit. Been tempted with a D3... even more tempted now.
Had both the p38 is still the better car and cheaper tax but the d3 is good but try to get a commercial they are on normal tax
Most homely folksy motor info and entertaining personality. Compelling original. Great Ben.
Used to drive those with work. Always my favourite tow vehicle. Very sure footed and well planted.
I love your videos ben could watch them for hours .you are so down to earth. And yes really like the discovery looks really straight hope you enjoy it ttfn.
out of curiosity, I mean this is a good buy for £3000, but why not an iveco/isuzu lift and shift tow truck? They do lightweights that can be driven on a car license and it's easier than landy+tow.
Love your vids Ben, and coming from a Landy fam may I welcome you into the tribe of fun and frustration. All LR products are great big pits in which to throw money, but they’ll nevertheless attempt to be your friend right til the end; like an old golden that’s too decrepit to retrieve you’ll get to the point that only the shotgun makes sense, but your heart will never let you do that and so we’ll watch as your money fritters fritters fritters away.
As for the aux problem; what about one of the 12v powered FM Bluetooth transmitters? You can connect your tunes to it’s aux, your phone to its Bluetooth and then just tune the radio to that frequency. Job done. Saves a hella hassle and won’t be too expensive at all in the grand scheme of fascias and wiring harnesses. Edit; just saw the end of your vid and see you’ve sorted it. Och well, it’s a fix to bear in mind for next time eh!
The silver reflectors, (tent lol), are great for keeping the heat down. Put them in front window, held by visors and they reflect the heat back out. Great if you have a dog in car
Loving the channel! Although not a fan of LR that is a steal at £3000 and well worth taking a punt on!
I’ve got the same car in the same colour here in Australia, owned for 14years now, regular engine light comes on for low voltage on a sensor, replaced the sensor but still happens so I turn it off with a reader, great car, mines 2006 4.0 V6 petrol, solid as a rock, and I’ve put a Sony head unit in as well.
Just subscribed after watching mondeo st24 video. Great work .and only thing id do with the ford lion engine is fit the genuine revised water pump housing . And i was surprised you didnt go for a double din radio with sat nav for when your on the road finding the cars
Glad you're enjoying your Disco ;) The squeal could be from the auto handbrake. These can fail so badly the auto and manual release no longer works.. recommend you carry bolt cutters to cut the handbrake lines or it will need a tow and skids to get it on the truck.. speaking from experience ;)
You played some American music whilst showing us the vehicle in Halfords car park. It should have been the Casey Jones theme music as it came from K.C. Jones lol Another greay vid Ben, keep em coming.
Yeah glad you showed us this Ben well worth doing! It seems to meet your requirements well. I know what you mean about the Passat i' ll miss mine too but onwards and upwards as they say. Looking forward to the new videos 😂
9:32 lardy bastard 🤣🤣🤣
Love the vlogs you’re like the English version of Derick from VGG lol
I think the "pop up tent" is a windscreen sun shade.
Bluetooth FM transmitter in the cig lighter and tune the radio to it connect phone via bluetooth and wayhey you have tunes and no wiring needed costs a tenner!!
TC, Love the fact that you have gone for "The Best 4X4XFar" or as every D3 owner like my self "The most unreliable 4X4XFar" Ive had 5 LRs this is my 3rd discovery and I can tell you my Austin Montego was more reliable...Having said that I have just done a 1200mile holiday from Devon to north Wales and only the AC and Sun roof packed up on yes your same hot week, but it was fine as mine has a fridge built into the centre consul so my fuel receipts from the last year staid cool! 30mpg on holiday 25mpg on normal commute to work.
Things to note; You need a proper scan tool not an OBD clown, one that does all the modules, a second hand Snap-on (with the software up to your reg date will do) you just need access to all the ECUs,
Any liquid you put in will come out on your driveway
Are you sure that the aux socket is NOT UNDER THE HIDDEN Flap at the back of the centre consul GO LOOK AGAIN.
The original radio has phone bluetooth (that's why it has a 10 button pad) so you drive and dial (and I said that in your voice in my head lol)
D3s like a good battery and make sure the terminals are FULLY on in fact where the + cable goes out threw the plastic cover cut it down a bit as some batteries are slightly lower than original they like a full 12.5 to 14v as they have a smart charge module on the terminal.
WARNING to all "the Disco3/4 comes with a plug in swan neck tow bar its been down rated from original spec, TCs has the full 3.5 ton horse box/ car trailer frame tow bar the swan neck plug in IS NOW NOT RATED FOR horse box/ car trailer weights, (there should be a red plastic plug pushed in your tow bar hole all the time your not using it if you want to keep using your swan neck for lightweight towing"
Anyway TC glad to see you have moved on up to the point where the wife makes you park on the road so you don't leave oil on the drive and good luck with that Transmission fault message as my auto says that about 2 a week.
Great Videos xx

Carry a diagnostic reader with you at all times. Had the same car that was 18month old. Lovely car when it worked. Rear light bulbs blew pretty regular. Now on a good old VAG motor if a bulb blows a little light pops up on the dash, on a disco (well mine) if a bulb blew the car wouldn’t start until the AA man came and reset the ecu. Hope you get better luck than i did. Never again will i buy anything other than VAG
Yes sport badge is not original
Manual box is good....autos snap their cranks
Commercial specs are generally XS...fair bit more toys than GS
Aux socket is indeed behind the centre armrest but easy to miss
Good luck with your new truck, theyre really good bits of kit 👍
Nice landy, and at £3k can't grumble, as for poverty spec, in my eyes no point in buying a top spec land rover discovery at this age, satnav will be out of date, leather starting to split, and the more specs the more can go wrong, all you need is to keep on of servicing, and make sure battery and charging in 100%,as a low battery can cause all sorts of ghost faults to appear. Also need a good diagnostic tool ,so can reset handbrake and suspension if ever working on theses, I used gap iid tool pacific for land rover, dear but worth the money
For some bizarre reason I've bought myself a Landover series 3 project then a Landover vogue which is a surprise project , ah well all the joys hey 😅
Restored my faith in LR products at the end.
Most of the way through I was thinking you’d found the mythical one that does what it should, but no, it’s like every one I’ve ever seen.
They’re all broken in some way. LR fans just get ones that are broken in ways they can tolerate.
From fairly extensive, not to mention expensive, experience, I think you got lucky with it not being an auto! The octopus is an expensive nightmare on those and, if it’s not just putting you in the wrong gear, or no gear at all, it can cause a no start situation that cannot be solved by jumping the starter solenoid.
If I never see another one, it’ll be soon enough.
At least the manual one will limp you home, even if the management system has no communication with it.
My favourite Discovery, nice colour as well. Always loved this model, the new discos look bland and cheap in comparison.Very nice Ben and a great buy
Can’t you bet a Bluetooth fm transmitter? I did that in my e46 works like a charm. Big up from the USA.
Nice motor Ben, electrical gremlins are a thing with these, so, parr for the course. Be hopeful that you don’t have one where the crankshaft snaps !, another VERY common fault on those engines, same with the jag xk etc. crankshafts are unobtainium for them, fingers and toes crossed for you. It does suit you though 😊.
Wow, congratulations 🎉😊 what an awesome buy! Classy
3 grand with a free windscreen shade in the boot ? Its a deal , its a steal , its the sale of the century !! Btw , did you film the outro at Preston Brook ?
As long as they are properly maintained they are reliable contrary to ill informed opinion of some. The main thing is to ensure you have the uprated oil pump fitted. This is vitally important.
Very nice! Glad you got a good deal.
Time for some pinstripes... :)
Not that iv ever had the urge to buy one of these ,i must say even though it's poverty spec it sure doesn't look it ,it looks top notch , and the colour helps .
3 bags of sand is cheap as chips too😁.
Good luck with this ben .
My favourite car, the Discovery. Keeping thinking I should get myself one.
Recommend LR Time for Disco info. Particularly oil grade if you are servicing.
Great bargain Ben and great video, look forward to this
There is a possibility. Don't know it's name, but it goes into the cigarette lighter for power, you connect to it per Bluetooth, and then it sends a signal on a radio channel to the radio. I have one somewhere, cost about 17 euros. You tune the radio to the frequency it's sending on and it works fine.
Ive my fingers crossed for you that this turns out to be a good motor. Those V6 Lion tdi's can be a nightmare, but you never know if youv'e just managed to pick up a decent example
Nice wheels Tasty, enjoy :)
Ever thought about doing a Podcast Ben? I'm sure a mix of both classic cars and music would be a hit 👍 nothing mega like maybe once a week. The channels pukka though don't change a thing.
Look inside the centre console for a socket.
Ya bro there a great work horse, well wear.
Like the Car and Rolled a 6 on the price! Enjoyed watching you basically end up with a new stereo 👍
Nice one. Some machine at that price. Health to enjoy Ben. 👍 Great car for towing
Not a TDV6, you have just bought the worst diesel engine in the world, get rid of it FAST - before the crankshaft cracks.
Tower of power ?
Haha yes this!
Great motor there mate , wouldnt mind it myself due to the roads here in Tanzania .... is it Diesel ?
nice Disco Ben!
Love the disco what a great price ,even if you spend a few quid on it your still be ok , You either love em or hate em I love em !!!
The faults you describe are common but we'll worth fixing. HDC fault , check the battery. Hand brake replace all the parts and get 100000 miles. Full service and all the oils but you must replace the belts and oil pump.
Looks like a bargain, loving the vids
As the bills come in, keep reminding yourself that it was cheap to start with. You began well into the black. Unfortunately these do have a bad reputation. One of those cars that is fantastic when everything is working, but 'everything working' isn't its default mode. And of course, anything that goes wrong is content for the channel!
Really nice Ben
Great to see a mastercraftsman at work they go to Halfords when things go tits up love the truck ben
I am posting a comment 30 seconds in to try and bump it up the algorithm! Champion stuff Ben.
It worked
I have now watched the video. You made a good choice mate. The amount of miles you will be towing, the Disco will just eat them up as if nothing is on the back. Getting shot of the factory radio was also worth the extra expense, we know you like your tunes, Radio 2 just wouldn’t cut it!
This is when they looked best. The later models make my eyes bleed
Seems a decent rig over all. I don't think you stole it though, I think you paid its money.
I hope it serves you well and you remain happy with it!
good video car pain in the ria end 👍👍😀😀
Handbrake fault is usually a stretched or snapped cable on these.also subscribe to LR time before doing any servicing.hes rebuilt loads of these engines which are a horror story.dont use the recommended oil.
Not difficult to fit cruise. Upgrade the steering wheel to start with
You need to win the pools to keep that big daft , badly made heap on the road! You were warned😭
Nice machine itl be handy but I do like the passat haha! I don't get these electric handbrakes I think they are a daft idea tbh. Think there for lazy folk. 😂
Light reflectors for filming.
A great looking Discovery. Roughly what mileage is on it? Happy motoring 🙂
Cheers Andrew, she's just ticked over to 112k!
@@tastyclassics Very interesting, thank you. Plenty of life left. Your Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 litre video was fantastic. Reminds me of my Cavalier in the early 80s .....a poverty spec 1.3L. It was grand except for the rust after 4-5 years!
Nice motors but those electrical faults drive you mad!! It'll do the job you want it to though for sure. That road tax though 😢 ouch. Enjoy 👍
Wouldn't it have been easier to spend just a few quid on a Bluetooth dongle with FM transmitter? That solved my problems.
Good service and do the belts be fantastic
Bargain Ben, what a nice motor, mnay not be top of the range but will do what you want I'm sure, great workhorse.
I could see my self in one of those , what a lovely car .
If there ever was proof you love fixing things this car is it 😂.
Enjoy😊
Right place, right time, right price, wrong car. I hope you have a lot of money to spend on it. GS means "gonna stop"
A Ben sized car. Suits you, man. Cool!
You are right, the UK car scene is shocking because all kids do now is put a relentless sticker in the back window and get a pop bang remap on their financed Audis 😂 Their new cars have everything now.
Love the new car i like the colour keep the video coming well done
They have a bad wrap in the U.S. but I like it & can't go wrong with that price..not the dollar, but sounded good
65hp per tonne yes its a sport model for a landrover
Any chance of being able to retrofit cruise control?
Nice car, but i must smile when you told the tax for this car, 600 pound every year.....here in the Netherlands you are paying something about 2000 for a car like the Land Rover diesel only on taxes !!!!
Loud proud and a 2.7v6 diesel nice one sir leave it as it is dont change it Crack on
I love land rover discovery’s I’ve had about 6 td5’s a 200td a 300tdi , the other 6 have been td5’s a Range Rover v8 p reg rebuild engine but only had that 2 weeks major electrical problems ( big mistake) stunning to drive but every time I fixed it the electric gremlins eat something else 😢made money on it but would have loved to keep it,
Looks amazing enjoy it .
I try and stay away from stuff with e brake, whoever thought it was a good idea should have been taken out in a field and shot! Welcome to the World of LR pain, I really hope you get good use from the Disco. They are cheap to buy these days, just passed over an 08 HSE for £450. Poverty spec is a hard one to sell, probably why dealer gave a low p/x.... Jag product with no leather!
Looks like a good buy Those things use a Peugeot diesel engine best on planet
Another great car with a load of problems good, great grand, wonderful
My aux is in the glovebox
Nothing wrong with the 2.7 V6 as long as you do regular oil changes. Did way over 100k with no issues. Can you not link your phone to the stereo via Bluetooth?? I had a Jag similar vintage (almost same controls) and I could do that.
Given this one is the poverty spec, I'm guessing it didn't come with Bluetooth.
Me likey the new Bus Ben - certain that the issue with the mpg is, ahem, driving style 😉
Farewell Miss Passat - you will 100% return to the Channel for your ‘15-minutes-of-fame’ 20 years from now, when one of Ben’s team of 4,000 + ‘hunters’ find you in a field after the Nuclear attack, having not started for 19 years, and you’l start second time, given that Ben forgot you have to depress the clutch to start ! 😉
Great acquisition Ben, and keep ‘em comin’!
JCHK
Your vids contain some great music which I'm not getting in to.
Can you still do the pool's? 😂
