  • This video covers many VW models and years and shows how you can restore the speedometer in your instrument cluster by changing the VSS switch!!!! (available at autozone or online) Warning .. sometimes the failure is caused by the circuit board on the speedometer itself... In the video I mis-spoke about the tachometer also being controlled by the VSS - it is not. The tachometer has a separate sensor. If you are having issues with multiple guages, it may be the circuit board as mentioned above. • Fixing soldering on VW... is a video just posted on the comment section that shows how to repair the soldering joints.

    thank you! never thought to check the sensor, just assumed i'd need a new cluster, meantime backup lamp switch has died... along with other sensors so it makes 'sense' to check the switch, clip and so on. I could fault find on the tach PCB but it's been easier just to use a HUD speedo app on my phone : )

    If the tachometer is acting up then this could be the culprit?
    Car drives fine, speedometer is fine, tachometer acts up when the weather is cold. Below 70 degrees (cold in SoCal). The RPM gauge jumps up and down and even beyond redline at idle and cruising unless I am accelerating.
    If this is the culprit I can change it when I flush the transmission fluid/gear oil and fill it from there.

    I have an auto 4 speed VW. So far I have replaced 2 of the speed sensors before i thought about the tacho drive. I got my son to start the car and i spun the tacho by hand and it registered on the speedo. However, when I put it back in the gearbox and started it up....nothing...I've just ordered a replaced pinion shaft...I'm hoping that the plastic had worn. In your experience, given that the speedo is registering the turns by hand..do you think that a worn pinion shaft is the answer? I'm at my wits end lol. Thanks, great vid by the way.

    • @amcrae1
      @amcrae1  5 лет назад +1

      Okay..i've got the definitive answer. There is a plastic gear in the differential which is inside the tranny. That gear can commonly split and no longer drive the pinion (that you turned by hand). It's a big job to do. You have to drop the subframe, remove the axles ( i think) then you have to remove a plate, then the differential "guts" and need a few special tools to get the new gear in place. My friend said he remembered the job being 5 or 6 shop hours!!!

    • @amcrae1
      @amcrae1  6 лет назад

      I'm sorry but I don't know, but you should be able to call the dealer and ask what the part # is for both of these cars.... also, I'm thinking that the part number should be on the VSS switch itself on both cars and if this is true you can match the numbers yourself.

    Can this cause the cabrio to have a hard time starting here and there cuz mines started acting up and the car will start in the morning but about noon it’s warmer I’m assuming outside and the car won’t start cranks but won’t start already replaced the starter ignition coil I believe and it was fine well at first it dint start but they put in a code according to the mechanic and then it started but now after some time and me replaced the cv axcels and rotors breaks and ball joints the speedometer started staying stuck and lightly bouncing but the car would start then it wouldn’t then the speedometer stopped jumping and the car started no problem and the speedometer dint live at all so has any one experienced this or know possibly what might be going on any help is appreciated thanks !!

    • @amcrae1
      @amcrae1  3 года назад

      Hi Samuel.... I hope you are well. To begin with, all that business with axles, rotors and brakes have NOTHING at all to do with your starting issues or your speedometer. In your other situation, you said the speedometer was lightly bouncing and the car would start????? The speedometer should be doing NOTHING if the car is standing still. Do you mean the tachometer was moving????? One major thing to test is this.... if your car is "turning over" but not actually starting, find out if there is a charge going out into your spark plug wires. You can do this in a number of ways, including getting a tool from Autozone OR just use a screw driver to ground the spark plug end of the wire to the body of the car. If you get a spark, then the coil is OK. If your car is not running right, it could also be the cam sensor.
