This 2005 Golf came to me with a non working speedometer.
All other gauges were fully functional, only the speedometer was not...
Interesting things found once the cluster was opened...🤦‍♂️

Brilliant Louis, after the first two tests to see that the the cluster is getting a speed signal and also to see that the needle wouldn't move with the Autel test most of us would have just called the cluster, but not you, you went to the point of not only removing and stripping the cluster u then decided to strip the tiny fiddly motor, excellent stuff, u must have the midas touch because with my sausage fingers I would definitely broke it.
    Thanks Louis great video.

Hi. Ive been playing around with those bipolar stepper motors from an old audi a3. Ive build some kind of tester for those. It is based on 1 IC an arduino with 10 lines ofcode and an potentiometer ill be glad to send you schematics or even the circuit itself. You just plug in the suspected motor in and the needle would precisely follow connected potentiometers movement. Really cheap and quite simple solution. Just let me know if you would be interested i learned lots from you and it would be nice to pay you back. Great work!

@@LMAutoRepairs Hi. Unfortuneatly i couldn't send you the e-mail (i got autoresponse that it's outdated) anyway i've made you a video to show that tester thing. It could be useful as car companies often use Bipolar steppers and not all of them could be actuated over OBD so you can test idlers, throttles etc. and my video for you ruclips.net/video/PN7JhzYGalY/видео.html.
in case you want to drive unipolar steppers use IC like uln2003a.

I would hazard a guess you had it right at the beginning. Gearbox (cog) issue. I've seen well over a hundred of these type of dashboards with similar problems. All they need is opening and putting back together correctly. The burned stuff you saw is quite normal. Most have this discolouration. Either flux or more likely something there to stop the solder cracking over time. The brownish residue always looks cracked and dodgy. Your resistance measurements are correct for a good set of coils (brushless motor type of an idea). I might have had a couple with genuine faulty motors, the rest were the same scenario as yours. Dash been stripped to fiddle mileage or block out a warning light. The motors go faulty because the idiots are rough and push the needles back on without securing the spindle at the other side. God knows how considering how tight these motors are to get to bits but the stop position on the big cog gets jammed. All it needs is a finger on the other side holding the spindle while pushing the needle back on and there's no problem. Good vid, you got it working again. I wouldn't have thought it would fail again.
Forgot to say, I first figured the stop position issue on the first one of these I ever stripped down. I was the original idiot 🧐
    (Jesus, another essay 😬)

@@LMAutoRepairs thank you some much for showing me the way, i found the problem thanks to you and it has nothing to do with electricals, you cannot really see it on your video but when i pulled mine apart the problem was quite clear, and i bet that in your case was the same, and it happens has you can clearly prove in video that someone was already messing with the cluster, in your case was hiding warning lights, and in my case i tried to change the all cluster, and the problem is the small cog inside their is two and the one that is kinda like on a axel with a spiral on it, and that one moves out of place ever so slightly but it is enough, not make contact anymore and the Speedo stops working, i would never find the problem if it wasn't for you, much much appreciated you are a legend.

Great repair as always. But I think that needles should be calibrated after putting in a car. As you can see in the movie, after repair is done the engine speed is showing above 1.000rpm which shoud be around 800-850rpm as it was before repair. Also when you have done needle test with autel the speedometer should go from 0 to 140mph (no over as it goes in your video) and stop at 60mph.
But maybe I am wrong. Movie is very insteresting, great job.

    • @LMAutoRepairs

Because when I started it at the end, the car was cold... cold start always holds the revs at bit higher... the revs drop after the cold start is finished...
Anyway, as far as you place the needles in the exact same position as they were before, will be fine... this was not my first time disassembling a cluster...😉

I would never cover over a warning light. Modern snowflake drivers depend on ESP to stay on the road. Furthermore some modern cars (probably not a Golf)
have an unstable chassis so they depend on the ESP. if that car was in a crash someone could be in trouble.
Not that I blame you as you just returned it how it was. I would do the same.

Nice one. Time consuming though? Just a thought: if it fails or goes dicky again you could swap the temp guage with the speedo motor? Temp guage probably gets less use so is less worn? Done similar things like this before.

A voltage spike could have damaged the cluster...
