Analysis of Brokeback Mountain: The Role of Landscape, Explained

- The landscape in Ang Lee’s 2005 film Brokeback Mountain amplifies themes of desire and repression, and in doing so, and upends the traditional role of landscape in a western film. The two main characters, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, struggle throughout the film to find the words to describe how they feel for one another. And even when they do find them, feel too inhibited by societal expectations to fully and freely express them. The landscape helps tell the story of Brokeback Mountain in instances when dialogue cannot.

This is one of those movies that you know it’s gonna tear you down and make you cry non stop but you can’t stop watching cause it’s literally one of the best romantic stories ever made and many of us relate to it in many ways 🥺
I watched this movie last night, cried so hard even my mom had to ask me what was wrong. I watched it again today, i simply couldn’t scape the feeling of wanting to go back even though it might hurt. I can’t get over all the emotions, I’m glad that I got to watch it

Ive watched it dozens of times and I still cry every time. I understand the pull to return to the film. It is one that will stay with you, emotionally.

When you have that person you keep going back to, whom you love beyond articulation. But once you stop, all you have are the memories, the shirts, the jumpers, the postcards. All you have are the remains not lethal but still filled with potential to cause the scars to ache. Once the agony fades, all you have is a dull ache that you can tune out, even process and file away. There to remind you that you once loved them without need for words. Brokeback is my sob movie, I saw it at a time in my life when I was struggling to quit her but I was faced with no alternative. And in it, I saw pieces of my repressed self, and saw just how isolated I would be if I carried on denying who i really was, and who I really loved. It was hard to watch. You never know when your life’s gonna just end, so let yourself be happy. Because that’s all we can really hold on to.
idc that this movie breaks me, yes i’m going to watch it at least once a month for the rest of my life.

Growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s I remember was a weird time living in southern US I remember feeling the desire to be open minded but due to my conditioning I somehow feared this film? It’s hard to describe. Childhood ignorance? Now as an adult I’m so happy I can think for myself and decide that this love Is love as it’s so beautiful I just love this movie it’s so well done.
I bet this film will age very well. In fifty years people will still consider it brilliant. Maybe more so than today.
Beautiful analysis of a film that takes its time building many moments of purity and serenity in the scenery and while developing the characters... the guitar score is also gentle and has perfect timing. A must watch for anyone who loves cinema!

I just discover this movie on Netflix and after watching it I'm so heartbroken 💔 and watched it again and again but i can't get over it and still it hurts now I'm buying the book and i will read it again and again its my new favorite book. But the pain is unexplainable and I'm like torturing myself over an old movie but so full of love. I'm inlove with heath ledger knowing that i hate him as the joker, he died so young l. 😔 💔💔💔

I just rewatched this movie and genuinely thought Jack's mother slipped Enis the ashes when she gave him the paper bag for the shirt. I was still clinging to a "happy" ending.
Jack's mother regards Enis with love and humanity where her husband has only acidity. The father spoke disdainfully of Jack's dreams and emphasized the presence of a new man in Jack's life to spite Enis. The mother invites Enis further into their home despite the father's coldness. I think there's enough tension between the parents to suggest her advocacy may be the only reason the father let Enis in the door. She does what she can under the traditions laid before her with gritted optimism just as her son.
Maybe I'm misplacing allyship on this character cuz i'm just a TX bench who Ioves a "country" mom, bucking the yoke of patriarchy for the sake of her children. I yearned for the love for her son to win and pass Enis Jack's remains in an act of love and defiance. But she can only hand him the bag with a knowing look as they share grief, both of them only living as they can.
This story, cannot end with Jack's remains free on the wind at Brokeback as he wished. Enis kept the clothes in the closet with the postcard because it had always only been a wish in their world.

The movie was filmed in Alberta
The movie is set in Wyoming because the Annie Proulx short story is. It's where Proulx writes about, and she writes about character arising from landscape and place. Of course, there could be a story about gay cowboys in the southwest but they wouldn't be these characters. Proulx hasn't sat down and thought where the landscape might mirror the characters, she has found a place and thought about what characters this landscape will produce.
I just recently watched this again for the first time in a couple years, and I love the style of this movie. I’m not gay and I’m completely indifferent on the whole gay rights topic, but this movie I find fantastic, the way it’s shot, the outdoor environment, and their relationship seems just as normal as anyone else’s, aside from the secrecy of course.
I mean... Broke back ~ amiright?
