What it was like hearing Mayonaise by The Smashing Pumpkins for the first time in 1993.

- A recreation of what I felt back in 1993 when I first heard this song. This band has been my favorite band for the past 28 years.
This is the closest anyone has ever come to describing what happens with the 'Mayonaise' guitar...
Exactly!! “ it’s heavy but you can slow dance to it” I would love to dance with a cutie to this song!
Since when is muddy guitar tone complicated
@@meangreen99 I can't take full credit for the quote I'm paraphrasing, but SP are like velvet pants, too plush for some to appreciate.
@@meangreen99You spelled fuzzy wrong.
@@HenritheHorse they call it a muddy tone as well id say get off your high horse but you are the horse apparently lol.
This is the single greatest short I've ever seen
Exactly!!!!
Fr tho this is so awesome bc it’s already one of my favorite songs and this random dude on the internet explains my reaction so perfectly
I 100% cosign that!!
All the above statements are facts
You gotta let the super trouper lights find you. They make you feel the best. They make will make you a little blue, though
“Is mayonnaise an instrument?”
“No Patrick, Mayonnaise is an experience”
YES!!!!
The easter egg that no one got in Spongebob.
is this the krusty krab?
😂😂😂 I love that quote

ill never forget being 11/12 yrs old and adjusting to my parents divorcing and having a new step father. Long story short, i didnt like him, but he was smart. He saw a in with the music he knew I already liked and ill never forget when he picked me up from wrestling practice one day, he didnt say anything. I jumped in the truck and he knew i liked my music loud. He put this record in and cranked up the volume and we drove around aimlessly for about an hour. He helped raise me and I couldn't be more grateful for him. thanks man.
Stepdad W 🥹
That’s an awesome memory, thanks for sharing
sounds like a cool guy. Why didn't you like him?
@@shanejoh1 this is the real question.
@@shanejoh1Probably because he was a 11/12 year old kid and liked having his dad and mom together since that is what he experienced his whole life until they got divorced. He also probably thought his parents might get back together and things would be "normal" again if this new guy wasn't in the picture.
I miss the feeling of getting a new cd, reading the track list and looking at the album art.
Imagine getting the double tape back in the day ❤❤❤
You CAN still buy the CDs unless it's some indi self publishing artist online who hasn't put out a physical album due to logistics. It's still out there. Vinyl has even seen a bit of a revival.
@@ANPC-pi9vu it’s not really the same feeling. I have access to near unlimited music at my fingertips. Going out of my way to buy a cd or vinyl is just trying to recreate that nostalgic feeling. That time has passed.
Do you remember the smell of the booklet that came with Machina? Like a really old book. The paper was so soft and the artwork really was something. They always put so much work into their album art. Yeah, I for sure miss CDs.
I went to the shop to buy a CD the other day. It was everything I had hoped for. It's totally worth it.
Track #11 is "Silverfuck"
😂😂😂
Yeah, we know.
The comment I was looking for
@@gzo313captain buzz kill over here

Wow that's a great description of the feeling
Nice 👌
Then drive me far starts up by Deftones after the break I’m comes.
Dude, I liked this comment and closed replies before it hit me just how good this comment was. Dang brother. I felt that.
That’s what the 90s felt like
“This song is heavy but you can like slow dance to it.”
Best description of that feeling you get with this song.
Another song like that is Gravity by Wage war, except its actually heavy
@@leecarrington1932 there are different levels to “heavy” imo, not really fair to compare 90’s altrock to 2010/20’s metalcore/djent/whatever sub genre ya wanna call it.
And we did.
O uO Memories.
The easiest 10/10 album I’ve ever listened to. Absolutely timeless
Same sounding shit. Most overhyped band I ever heard.
I just turned 40 this year and it's been such a funk mid life crisis. Your shorts really urge me to just drop everything and go back to music - the one true thing in my life I left behind for far too long
Do it!
Do it!!! 40 is kicking my @$$ as well. 😱
Same 😢
40 but full of life. Same here, guys. But let's still rock 🤟
I never realize how much of a depression I'm in until I go back to focusing on music. It's like my heart only beats on rhythm
I was in 6th grade in 93, friend let me borrow his cd, changed my life, I’m 44 and it still blows me away
I’m 44 too. Were you kept back a few years? You should have been in at least the 9th grade by ‘93. 😂
One of the greatest grunge/rock albums ever made.
I was in 5th grade, had the tape version of this playing on my Sony Walkman. It had bass boost on it too 😊.
You never gave it back? 😅
@@cardsnark3651 probably not. I never gave my tape back to my brother either 🤣
Probably my favourite Pumpkins’ song.
Im grateful to have a been a kid in the 90’s and enjoy bands like the pumpkins, it was a great time for music and life in general. No phones, No internet, No worries.....take me back
Going through an album and listening all the way through. 😊
Amen
I was a teen in the 90’s and I certainly had the internet
@@Kravis63 my parents got it later in the 90’s maybe 97……..but didnt really use it until the 2000s to download music.
I’m an 85 millennial and I think we got our first computer when I was 11 or 12. I can remember it being a big deal because they were so expensive. But I know what you mean, I used it to download music and didn’t really care about it until MySpace came along.
I literally just watched this 10 times this band changed my life
This is such a beautiful interpretation of the experience that is Mayonnaise.
I'm genuinely in tears because of how accurately you described it. This short made my day! :))
I love that album so much it hurts🤕
It hurts even worse to know those years have passed away.
I just discovered this album last year and It's changed my life. But yeah it really hurts that I'll never be able to experience those times.
I discovered it when I was 16, and even then it somehow hurt. I think it's just what this kind of music does to you.
Feel you on that
💔💔💔
All that time can't be given back...
This brought a tear to my eye. That song. That god damn song.
Happens bro, it made the guitar cry too
a warm blanket is such a good description for this song. I always thought of it like a blanket for my ears.
Love, Love, Love The Smashing Pumpkins! The 90’s music was the Best!
80’s and 90’s.
This is the most beautiful guitar song ever written
It's not
Cherub rock is better
Not trying to knock your opinion but you should listen to more guitar music
@@stillwelltjz6798 i do listen to guitar music and i play. I like how mayonnaise uses an open E tuning. Soothslayer by bucket head is one of my tops for strictly instrumental. This song is just a great tone and i love the harmonics in intro.

This and Drown off of the Singles soundtrack always floors me
Totally! 2 of my fav songs of all time!
Drown is a classic. Only reason I had that movie soundtrack in my collection haha
Only the version with the feedback solo.
We can be friends
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
the music of the 90s was just so amazing..
god i feel so old.
You're still here. Celebrate. We lost a lot of good people along the way.
I got chills watching this! Went back to the days when I saved money to buy a cd. And when going to the music store at the mall was a whole experience. And when the excitement from removing the plastic wrap, from smelling the "brand new" scent of the cd case, the excitement from opening the lyrics booklet to see the amazing art and photos, and the excitement of going to your living room and playing the cd and just lay down feeling the music all around and within you, all of it was just magical, wholesome, it was Everything! The excitement of bringing a friend or two to your house and sharing the experience together! Like in this video! I just went back to those days watching it, and it was such an amazing experience! Thank you! ✌️ ☮️ 🤗
amen bro.
we dont have plastic discs, but can still do the rest of the ritual!
Smashing pumpkins..... favorite band of all time!
Favorite song....33
Live versions are super cool too
Good song
Holy shit made me teary eyed with a smile
Same. My eyes are still shining. I've never seen such an accurate representation of my emotional experience with this song.
Absolutely same.
This song is often on loop on my Pandora 😻
😂
The way Billy gets that sound is by the pedals he uses.. his main one that gives it that signature pumpkins sound is called a "big muff" pedal.. very underrated guitarist
James Iha
@@bionicfuzz5091 super underrated as well
Was Billy not James!
people should stop using the word underrated. It's retarded. And It's much more than one pedal bro. If it was one pedal many songs would sound like this. But there is no sound quite like SP.
A prefer a small muff myself.
-James Haha
This is my most favourite video of 2024. You Sir, are an absolute genius, thank you for making such a descriptive and personal video. Your expressions, the conversation, the effect of the music kicking in.... Just sheer brilliance 👏👏👏👏👏❤
What it was like to sit in a room with your friends and listen to a record. Pure nostalgia.
And play Super Techmo Bowl.
Where's the bong though?!
Its actually one of the greatest songs ever
Billy Corgan is one of the most underrated talents of all time. He deserves to be mentioned among the greatest of all time.
He's an excellent producer as well! My favorute Taproot album was produced by him!
Agreed 👍
He's widely acclaimed as one of the best songwriters of his generation. The only person who's insecure about Billy's achievements is Billy.
@@MistahMatzah not once in my life have I heard someone say that Billy Corgan is even in the top five for his generation.
@@MistahMatzah not really, he's aware of his talents but people love to hate him because he had an opinion and ego which he wasn't scared to display.
I discovered them about 5 years ago (I’m only 24) and omg when I first heard Gish and Siamese Dream, gosh I wish I could hear it again for the first time. Two of my fav albums ever.
Then you need Pisces Iscariot, Mellon collie and Aeroplane files high
Me too haha
Goooood Goooood, let the Smashing Pumpkins flow through you., boy.
Omg dude have you heard
Pisces Iscariot yet? If not. You need to stop what your doing and listen to it. You'll get another beautiful pumpkins dreamy feeling!
@@elyaqui5324 Omg funny u say that I discovered that album this year and it’s been my guilty pleasure ever since 😅 thanks so much for bringing it up again!
I had a spiritual experience hearing this song for the first time walking home from work at 2:00am in the snow during the most depressed period of my life. I decided life couldn't be that bad if something as beautiful as the song and the falling snow could exist.
So this not only gave me a laugh but also reminded me of a great moment in my life. Thanks buddy!
It’s like this guy makes videos just for me. Born in the early 80s played guitar all through the 90s.
My favorite band ever. Can just feel life all over again listening to them.
This is exactly what's missing from smashing pumpkins current music
Everything after machina sucks, the band got really sore after that album. Melon collie and Siamese dreams is just pure smashing pumpkins bliss
So true
You can't improve on perfection
Billy Corgans self titled albums are actually pretty decent if you’re into the electronica genre. Pretty grooooovy and different from the pumpkins materials.
@@ChickenThug55 yeah that's billy corgan though. When I refer to smashing pumpkins I want smashing pumpkins
First time I heard the Smashing Pumpkins was at a great house party. It was this loud and fantastic!
2years later they played a free concert in Downtown Minneapolis "Block E" across the street from First Ave night club!!! AWESOME!!!!!
I loved this album in high school, especially this song. I still listen to it to this day.
Ha! Fantastic way to show the feeling of hearing that feedback burst for the first time! Though, I'd describe it like the ground falling out from under.
This is my favorite SP track. It's perfect.
That’s a really sweet and funny video. For me, it’s the yearning in the melody, the longing. It’s so beautiful.
The longing..nicely put. It is indeed beautiful.
Greatest album of all time. I sill remember the day it was released like yesterday. Gives me goosebumps to this day! Thank you Billy!
Certainly one of the best rock albums of all time.
Tied with Mellon Collie for me. Both are legendary albums and top 5 of the 90s
glad he's still around and didn't do what he almost did the day before writing Today and Disarm. such an incredible talent. this song still makes me emotional years 30yrs on.
Wish I could claim to have been into SP early enough to have been awaiting the release of Siamese Dream.
I wish i could forget this song so i could listen to it for the first time once again
I’ve never seen such a niche video catered exactly for me.
Man I really miss cd jackets. Seeing all of the associated artwork, sitting in your friend’s room or on your bed reading the lyrics. Beautiful
The 90s were just full of great bands. Bands we'll never get these days. Omg what about "Hummer" or "Drown" or....hell they were just a great band.
And Quiet, Soma, Pug, X.Y.U, Adore, Zero, 33, Today, Geek USA, etc.
-Hummer kept me living, no lie.
Thay dreamy fuzz tone man.
and whatever you think of Corgans guitar playing, he sure knows how to arrange a song to setup a solo. you just feel the ground fall away from your feet and your airborne.
other songs that really "setup" the solo. Quiet, Cherub Rock, Soma, Geek USA...
Don't forget I of the Mourning or Mary Star of the Sea
Yass! U r 100% correct! Ahh, I of the mourning!!! 🎶 Radio plays my favorite song 🎶
Fun Fact Billy's producer "borrowed" Billy's guitar sound from GISH for Nirvana's Nevermind.
Billy was a bit salty but ultimately honored.
Straight up did that “check out track 11” in high school with friends lmao
never heard of this song, listened to it with my eyes closed n had a magical moment, thank you
James Iha - brought joy to many he and the other Pumpkins should be thanked by us all.
I never heard it put like that...his guitar is haunted, that's awesome
Smashing Pumpkins remind me of summer in the 90's. I uses to pinch my big brothers Pumpkins albums. Good memories and still listen to them daily. Mayonnaise is a superb track. My personal favourite is Rhinoceros.
You used to pinch your brothers albums, as Billy pinches a Mayonnaise harmonic. The Gish guitar hath spoken.
God bless you and whoever reads this, Jesus loves you
*Mayonaise
These videos are really good at making me happy and so horribly sad all at the same time.
You described the song so well 🎵❤
Nevermind, "Nevermind"... This was the best alternative rock album ever made. Perfect!!🎉
Takes me back to the first time i heard it…. It just made me want to cry and sway back and forth !! I was so mesmerized and fell in love with it !! I love how smashing pumpkins has that effect with many of their songs!!!!
I’m in near tears of joy over this video , so so so accurate . I never knew anyone else got a little brain jolt at that guitar harmonic in mayonnaise . Awsome . Made my day tbh
I caught this on the clock app 5 or 6 months ago. My family hates me now "not the miracle whip song again."🤬 I still get chills every time I hear it, 26 years later.
Billy and company bought this guitar at a garagae sale for $20. Every time they'd stop playing, it would send that wild feedback, so they decided to incorporate it into the song.
This is epic! I heard The Leaf Blower used to make this short just sold for 1.2 million at Sotheby's...
I swear this band makes me Dream ! I get a beautiful euphoric feeling in my heart . Such a Beautiful Beautiful Band!
One of the best albums ever recorded hands down. It's probably my favorite album of all time to be fair.
It's definitely in the top ten greatest albums of all time. Top five, even. The feels. "Spaceboy, I've missed yooooou"
I remember getting in to SP in '95... This was one of the first songs I heard after hearing 1979 and both songs touched my heart, and still do to this day. Brings me back to cruising around town on my bike with my walkman blasting this in my ears without a care in the world. I miss being worry and care free 🥲
1995 was too early for 1979
@@Smegma_pirate What are you on about, bro? MCIS record dropped October 1995. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellon_Collie_and_the_Infinite_Sadness
Got damn, I love this. Gonna make me cry.
Same,1995, on my best friends blue CD boombox in the house I now live in, a few feet from where I'm sitting. But it was "here is no why" from MCIS, mayonnaise was my second favorite. He's dead now, but I'll..
Matt: No I'm not I just had an eye infection
Me: it's like I can almost hear his voice
Matt: I'm only 42 we're the same age
Me: I'll always remember him
Actually, that whistle is the sound of the guitar stopping. Which became a part of the song.
I love the beginning of Cherub Rock. The drums and guitar give me goosebumps
This is legit what it was like hearing this for the first time 🥰🎶
Thank you for encapsulating the SP experience. I've always imo seemed to just miss the mark using ONLY words!
It IS beautiful! 🤩
His guitar IS crying lol!! This is so on point. 🤍 the story behind it is even better.
so beautiful
I saw them live around 2016 and told myself "I'll never hear distorted guitar this good live ever again"
So beautiful and accurate. I have time-travelled back to the 90s and I am crying tears of joy like Corgan's guitar 🖤 Thank you
Whether you listened to it in the early 90s or just now, the Smashing Pumpkins work (from the OG lineup) never gets old! Still loving it!
Knowing you has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I forgot how much the smashing pumpkins meant to you. This short is perfection!
Music selection is always right on point good sir. Thank you for your service
I been waiting 31 years for its sequel, "Mustard." Idk if I'll ever hear it, but I'll keep waiting.
this is the best representation of hearing a song you love for the first time
This was my song at age 14, still so beautiful to this day ♡.
Growing up listening to their song. Asked my Mum for money just to buy the CD….One of the best bands.
For the first time seeing this creator in my feed, the guitar-cry face was very much not expected. I love it, lol
Had my own show on my high school’s radio station the year this came out. I’d squeeze at least one, if not 2 songs in per hour. Fantastic stuff!
Felt all of this. Back in 92 and again today.
Did you know that distortion where the "guitar cries" was originally a mistake, but wound up in the song because Corgan liked how it sounded. Bought my brother this album on vinyl for Christmas. Absolutely takes you to a different time/place.
Mayonaise is still my most favorite song ever written at any point in time by anyone ever ‼️‼️‼️👍🏿👍🏿👏🏾👏🏾
This short captures every "holyf##" moment in good music ❤
Thirty years later and it's still one of my favorite SP songs.
I remember being in art school in the 90s and I listened to this album during many train rides into Philadelphia
I remember it playing on the school bus radio on the way home from school haha. I am in Australia.
On my Playlist everyday! My one year old loves jamming to the pumpkins before bed!!!
Smashing Pumpkins my Favorite band of all time!!!😍😍😍😍😍
This is how this song has made me feel for over 30 years. Excellent job. Especially the "guitar crying/fan" effect. Well done. Thanks!
Turning 12 in 1990 was an unreal blessing I appreciate more and more as time passes.
This is bringing me so much happiness
This is officially my favorite reel, i was born in 1998, and my favorite album ever is 5 years older than me🙌🏾
Goosebumps. I still remember the first time I listened to this song
Man I have so many great memories listing to this song.
I hope life is treating you right, Jill Morgan
You can be either sad or happy and enjoy this one. Well done Pumpkins. You helped define a decade.
Siamese Dream was the pinnacle for Smashing Pumpkins. They never quite got back to that level again.
I've been a pumpkinhead since 1994 and I used to agree with your sentiment. But MCIS and particularly Adore have aged like fine wine... to the point where I think they are equally as good as Siamese Dream. Still, I totally get your point. While the zombie hoard was obsesses with simpleton music by Nirvana (still cool) - they were missing out on the masterpieces dropped on us by Smashing Pumpkins. Even AiC isn't as badass as SP - though Layne's vocal abilities were 10000000X better than Billy's.
I went to a very painful funeral this week for a young man I knew who took his own life. They ended the service by playing Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins on the church PA system. Needless to say it was a powerful moment.
That's heavy dude.. wow
Man I listen to this daily great song
Right there with you. I listen to this song almost every time I drive
