In this how to tutorial i will show you how to apply crackle effect paint and the best way i have found for achieving a good crackle effect. I will be using three different types of spray paint in this tutorial to show you how each paint makes different crackle patterns , Also i'll show you how it works on gloss card and canvas, Also how to speed up the process by using heat to dry it faster.
In the video at 16 minutes 45 seconds i say leave it for about 2 hours but i should of said 20 minutes. sorry

Hi Guys! Thank you for watching, Just to let you know In the video at 16 minutes 45 seconds i say leave it for about 2 hours but i should of said 20 minutes sorry about that :(
The amount of time you hold the flame is very important. You have to remember that the paint is off gassing (also why you should be wearing a respirator!) so when you are flash sealing the paint it is also warming up and at a certain point those gases catch fire. In my experience is best to do it in shorter bursts as to keep the paint a little cooler!

Hi Terry, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment and feedback i really appreciate it :) Yes the crackle paint lets a lot of gases off and can easily set on fire if you get to close like i did in the video. I use The flame only to speed up the crackling time when filming a painting where i am using it, otherwise i will just leave it to dry naturally :) Yes give it ago and let me know how you get on with it :)
I love the Crackle; I'm having a guitar done in this kind of finish for me. So many different cool combinations you can do. I really like the teal/blues here.
Hi Larry thank for the comment, it's really appreciated :) Yes the crackle paint gives such a good effect , and different makes of paint gives different pattern's , i have a few idea's in mind to use it on more painting in the future, it's one of my favorite effect paint to use :) What colour are you having your guitar painted ?

I've seen some people using this effect but they used a hair dryer instead. It's safer and works just as good as using the flame.

Hi John, I just wanted to give my two cents with using the crackle paint. I use it with Montana gold and have found that I get a better crackle effect when the color base coat has had some time to dry. I do hit the crackle with a blow torch and that gives a better crackle effect than with no heat. When I crackle over wet i haven’t had good results. Just what I’ve found to work for me.
Hi Ryan, Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment and suggestions I really appreciate it :) Yes heat doe's crack it a lot better, i seem to get better results when the paint is a bit wet, but i may try it where i leave the paint for a while like a hour or so and see how that turns out, it may produce a better crack :) :)
I’ve got a high powered heat gun. Going to try this out on my motorcycles gas tank beneath taped out flames. Thanks for the videos as always!

Good video Jon. It's a bit old, hope you are watching. I want to put a very fine, or small crackle on something. Like part of the Montana White panel at I think 21:20. Not all of it was like that. What governs the size of the crackle? Why did it vary across the section? Looks like you put the same amount of base and top coat on it all. I am thinking it relates to thickness of one or the other coat. Maybe heat relates to it. I could put my item in an oven as it is metal.

I did the crackle effect with normal cheap spray paint just spray your second layer while the first is still wet and make sure the first is a thick layer
Hi Dogs27, Thank you very much for watching, and for taking the time to leave this comment and suggestion I really appreciate it :) Yes i find it works better if the paint is wet before adding the crackle, it also depends on the paint you use the cheaper paint is thinner then the more expensive paint so gives you longer to add the crackle paint on it before it starts to dry out, Thats why i used 3 different kinds of paint in this video to show how it works on different paint :)
Fire will also warp the paper or even blister it. You'll have wobble planets cause your round won't contact paper all the way around.

I just watched the cap video. And stars with the scraper. They seem way harder than I thought they would. But after the cap video I think I might need a cap better suited for making over spray easier. Any thoughts?

Have you tried Rust Special effect Montana Spray paint?

You might can do color. Then go over with clear first then crackle. It should work. And Not waste so much color.

What determines how big or small the crackle cells are?
Does it have to do with base coat thickness? Does drying time of base coat matter all info says at least 45 min and i see here that it happens o spot.
Also if i do 2 same cards same color same technique but one is drying naturally and the other with a flame would there be a difference or the flame just speeds up everything
Hi Denislav, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, and the questions I really appreciate it :) What i have found is that it all depends how wet the base coat is to what sort of crackle it produces and also what brand of paint is used will also effect the way it crackles, the wetter the base coat the more i find it will crackle. I only use the flame to speed the process up when i'm filming a video that i'm using crackle in, but if i'm using it and not filming i just leave it to dry naturally, the results are pretty much the same, Also using a flame to dry it can sometimes set the painting on fire if you get to close to it which can be a very bad thing, as it can ruin your painting and i always have something on hand to put it out if it won't blow out.
Does this work on metal as well? I have a pc case that would look amazing with this Kind of painting

Hi, I have a question so I started painting and I also attempted my first time using spray paint on too a canvas and I noticing now after a month that the spray paint is starting to crack on my piece. I didn’t apply any heat or anything like that so I’m just wondering do you have to put some type of primer for it for it to not crack? I love the crack effect but I’m definitely not looking for my piece to have that affect. Thanks
Hi Sinon, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, and the question, I really appreciate it :) No you don't have to prime a canvas before spraying on it if it says it already primed, I have never primed any canvas that i have spray painted on, but when i buy them, i always buy primed ones :) I'm not sure why it would do that, It's never happened to any i have painted, I have canvases that i have painted over 3 years ago which are fine.
Did you put a clear coat on after you finished the painting ?
@@JonBarberArt yeah, I just double checked if the canvas I have are primed which they are! I haven’t apply any type of clear coat or varnish. Which I would normal put varnish when I sell the piece. But should I have put a clear coating on it?!?!?! If so what type of coating do you use? But I’m wondering if it’s maybe the spray paint cans/brand that I used?

Hi Ahmet, Sorry for the late response, Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, and the question, I really appreciate it :) I use a can of clear coat for the fire dying, if i'm going to use a flame to dry the paint, but i don't do it much now, as i have a heat gun now and it works well for dying the paint and safer :) hope this helps.
What’s the best way to practice the fire method? Is there a certain type of poster board needed? And does it affect the size of the cracks?
Hi Finn, Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, and the questions, I really appreciate it :) To be honest with you I very rarely dry with a flame anymore, I find a heat gun or hair dryer works the same and is a lot more controllable :) the flame dying process is mainly used to entertain people that are watching to give a kind of wow factor especially when painting live in front of a crowd of people, it will work to dry the painting and make it crack tho but you have to be careful not to set the painting on fire if you get to close with the flame, the more crackle you put down the more it should crackle, and no there's not a certain type of poster board for this, hope this helps :)
do you not have to wait for the undercoat to dry before applying the crackle paint, that is what they say on the website
Would this work with the black crackle on the back of a blank skateboard and the color of the blank coming through the cracks?
Hi C_Hasting, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment and question I really appreciate it :) I'm not sure it would work if there's no paint on the blank side of the skateboard before adding the crackle paint , but it may work if you put a coat of clear on first, I've never tired or done it without having a colour down first, but I'll give it a try on a spare piece of wood to see what it doe's and let you know :)
Hi C_Hasting, i gave it try by just spraying the black crackle over some wood, it didn't do anything, i then tried it with some clear coat on the wood first still did nothing, and the last one i tried was putting a colour on the wood and then the crackle it worked perfect when i did that, so for it to give a crackle effect on something you would need to put a coat of colour on first hope this helps :)
Do you think a Heat gun would work instead of flame so it don't catch fire but still can heat up to say anywhere from 400 to 1000deg?
Also, should you let it dry for a few days or only a few minutes before applying clear coat?
Hi hideoutdodge01, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and questions i really appreciate it :) Yes you could use a heat gun to dry the paint but not sure how it would work doing it on crackle paint has you are only heating parts of it at a time where as using the flame you heat it up all at the same time, it may work or it may not , If you try it could you let me know how you got on thank you :) And for the second question i apply the clear coat as soon as i finish the painting :) Hope these answers help :)

How does one get a small crackle effect? The object I want to paint is really small so I’d like the crackle effect to also be quite small, only a few mm long crackles.
Hi Rytam, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment and questions I really appreciate it :) The less crackle paint you add the less it will crack so therefore it should make a smaller crackle effect, but i'm im not sure if it will crackle just a few mm, the only way to know for sure is to try it out, next time i'm painting i'll give it try :) :)

Also, wouldn't it make more sense to put two rows of color and then the different crackle paint, or does it need to be done in that order?
Hi Klayman, Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and question i appreciate it :) I only did it that way for the purpose of this tutorial, If i was doing it on a painting i would put all the base colour down first then spray the crackle paint over the top hope this helps :)

I'm trying to do this cracked effect only I'm trying to do it on a cement Lion statue and I'm trying to make it look white and gold. Please help
Hi Vincent, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, and the question I really appreciate it :) Do you want the cracks to be gold and then the rest of the lion white? if so you would have to paint it all gold first and then spray the white crackle over it, so when the white crackle's you will see the gold show up in the cracks , hope this is helpful :)

When the paint is too dry would it help to put clearcoat on it?

Hi Ben, Thank you for the question , I have never tried it with Krylon but i have try it on other makes and they all do the crackling effect , but they all look a little different from one and other , sorry i couldn't answer your question any better , But give it a try it might crackle really well , let me know how you get on with it :)

Well. I used crackel effect spray on a Terra Cotta pot... Didn't get the crackel effect.. maybe the paint wasn't good... 😐
Hi Michelle, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, I appreciate it :) i have never tried it on a terra cotta pot, it could of been the paint you used, some spray paint brands won't work with the crackle paint because of the formula in the paint.

Can you do the crackle paint in reverse? I'll be painting an rc truck body where you paint the inside of the lexan body, so I would have to put the top coast down first... Can you do crackle paint then the color, and get the same effect?
Hi Dragonwhyr, Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment and question i really appreciate it :) I'm not sure that it would work to be honest as you have to have some paint on the surface first before putting the crackle on it as the crackle paint won't crack if these's nothing under it. I've never tired it so i may be wrong i might give it a go and see if it works tho :) Sorry i could'nt be more helpful.
@@JonBarberArt does the crackle paint start to crack on clear coat or only on colored paint? Maybe do a clear coat on the clear lexan truck body, then crackle paint, then the color....

Hi Dragonwhyr, I've given it a go on glass spraying the crackle first then spraying the colour over the top, it did nothing on the glass when i turned round :( I did give it another coat of crackle on top to see if it would do anything to the first layer of crackle but it didn't. I then sprayed a colour over the 2nd coat of crackle and it worked as it should and crack really nice :) So to be honest i'm not sure it would work on a lexan truck body, it may tho with it being a different material, or for it too crack it has to be put over a colour to work right, I hope you find this helpful :)

I heard spraying the crackle paint in small circles effects the way it crackles, do you have any idea if that's true?

@@JonBarberArt i read that it helps the paint have a more defined break. I guess when it's being swirled and overlapped certain areas have more paint applied, as opposed to having the paint added in a linear spray
How does this work on plastic? Would it work if the surface is rounded (like a dome)? How tough is the surface? Would this be strong enough to use on something that would be handled a fair bit? (I'm looking to paint a keyboard) How high up off the surface are the crackle pieces/could a couple coats of clear top coat make this able to be smoothed and polished? Really cool effect.
Hi Brian, Thank you so much for watching, and for taking the time to leave this comment and question, I really appreciate it :) It should work on plastic i tried it on plexiglass and it worked ok, yes it should work on a round surface, should be strong enough with a few coats of clear coat, the crackle height will depend on how thick of a layer you put on, and yes it can be smoothed and polished after a few coats of clear coat, hope this helps.

Ja, I also wanted to ask you if you are using a torch instead of a heat gun on purpose. Maybe the crackling with the heat gun has less effect. 😊 Great video, very scary to set painting on fire. I also use a torch for acrylic pouring, but it never burned so far. 😅

Why you keep sayin white for blue?

Couldn't you just use a heat gun and lower the risk of the paint catching on fire?

Its fine when you’re gesturing towards things you’re handling or referencing, but in the beginning your hands were not unlike dolphins porpoising out of the water lol.
