There could have been a small building on an island. A food store? The island could have been built up (with turf) to accommodate it. A turf shed that wouldnt last long but perhaps often renewed, particularly if it stored something smelly. I'm basing this suggestion on knowing turf was often used to built an extension to houses for overwintering animals and then the smelly peat burnt come spring. Plus, how common crannogs were on Scottish West Coast. Those I know are in fresh water. Some tiny, not suited to placing human habitation on and likely more recent than the crannog farms surmised about from a couple of millennia ago. The shore and tide line, the islands, as you said in video, may have looked a lot different. Not unusual for water courses to change.
I think the shore line would be quite different now to back then in the early 1900's. Tie a couple of the logs together on an old palate and pull along the water edge with a decent rope from shore. Its an easy decision fence off the area nearest your house so the sheep don't poop there, its not as if they hav'nt got anywhere else to graze as they have plenty. Your food supply and growing veggies is important and comes 1st. Take care 💕🇦🇺
What I said when you were looking at the wood to haul back to the cottage... "load it up in a boat." Then you said the same. Ah well, step by step. The mics are working beautifully. I have binge watched all your episodes, and am now current. Lovely video, as always. Such a beautiful place.
If you're going to grow sweet corn, you need a much bigger garden. Cut your wood and pull it back to the house on a sledge. Easy to make one and very useful for hauling anything. Groceries, wood, coal, fuel, water, stone, seaweed etc. Easier to use than the wheel barrow. Scott, you can be Capt. Cook! I don't think he went anywhere near the Hebrides, but I wouldn't swear to anything! Meeting a stag would be fun. Beats a bear or a moose.
Sooo beautiful there. Thank you for sharing with us. I've made salt from sea water quite a few times. I just put m old y pan on the log burner and it evaporates fairly quickly and makes lovely salt
The thing that, at first, drove us mad was the silence making our ears ring. The next, when we went hunting for our meat (a deer, only when we needed meat), was the tree frog 'chorus'. It was deafening!!!!!
🙋♀️❤ Magellan was the explorer that came to my mind!😂 I heard the curlew! So funny how the sheep like to hang around the kitchen door. Those islands may have changed over the centuries I wish we could see over that hill. Maybe there's another mysterious metal box pretending to be a building. 😮
When you were pulling the leaves out of the water spring. Why not put a piece of chicken wire over it to stop leaves and stuff falling in. That would be easier to clean and putting your hands into the water
Another great video, my grandfather was from the Hebrides, came to Canada after WWII, we use to love to listen to him speak Gaelic, and he often called fern bracken. Also your new microphones are doing their job.
Definitely try floating the logs round, behind a dinghy or just walked back on a long rope. Choose the appropriate tides to work with you though (coming in, not going out😉). Good luck🙂🌸
That sheep poop is good fertilizer. I'd save it up for the garden this spring. It already comes in nice manageable pieces to cast about. Seaweed is a convenient slug and snail deterrent, I must try it for we have an ample amount living on the Northern California coast. Is it the sodium content that does the trick? The madness could be due to island fever.
I am told that snails and deer do not like the smell of sheep's wool. But if it is very wet and the smell is not released, the snails can take shelter under the wool. Maybe something to try
Hi Kate and Scott, you popped up on my you tube recommendations and I went back to episode 1to start and as an avid knitter and newbie spinner, I was so happy to see your gorgeous sheep and learn you have a spinning wheel to make use of their fleeces. Do you knit/crochet also? I am very much enjoying following all your adventures and the stunning scenery as well as the history.Thank you for sharing with us Gill😊
Yes, I've got a couple of knitting projects on the go at the moment! It seems the craft has had a resurgence, eh? I know lots of young ladies have taken it up. Thank you for watching, we're glad you enjoy the episodes. 😊 Kx
Hi love the videos can’t you set up some sort of pulley system you could move it where you need up can’t wait for next video many blessings to you both x
Do you eat the just opening heads of the Bracken? Fiddleheads my friend in Maine, USA calls them, lightly boiled and served with salted butter. They taste like asparagus. But I think you'd need to be sure the species was edible first. Jo in France 🇫🇷
Love you idea about the wildflower meadow. That would look amazing and is very beneficial for insects. You mentioned that you didn’t have a boat…i thought that you live on an island. Don’t you need one to go to the mainland?
Think you are right. in that the dark line is the high water mark of average spring tide and light line is the low water mark. and it just shows what is visible at high water mark. the way to check is see if there is a circular rock on the island to the right.
Wood floats. You could tie the pieces of wood into a log boom and tow it back with the row boat. Bigger pieces would be better and you can cut it when you get to the home beach
That would be a good option, especially with the drop-bow section. I mentioned the dory because I see so many of them lying decaying everywhere, so maybe very cheap. They are heavy, and if the foam inner is soaking wet, heavier still...but almost indestructible! Anyway, I do so hope you find a suitable craft soon as it will make life much easier! Good luck with your search! @@TheScottishIsle
Can’t you take the log round in the kayaks? So interesting the conclusion of the building on the island. Makes sense though for sure. The microphones worked so well no wind noise at all. Do they work with your phone camera or do you use a camera with them? Loving the videos x
Just a question on your growing beds. I thought you said the one in front of the house had to go because it was sending damp into the living room. Did you resolve that? Love your content thank you.
You have unbelivebel good weater 😮we have rain for 5weeks now pfff😢 good luck with the logs it,s a problem Maybe get a horse to help you shift the logs ?
Maybe your sheep would like a radio playing somewhere that doesn’t involve your walkway? Just a thought. Although I’m guessing if they hear your voices, they're going to gravitate back to your voices.
why not make a raft out of a couple of wooden pallets, get a pair of chest waders, load the raft with the logs and tow them round to the cottage on a suitable tide
Add that sheep shit to your gardens it's great stuff. Also the leaves 🍃 drag them back and pile up in a compost heep. As for the island insanity, its the wee folk whispering in the wind, loosing the stays of societal expectations.
@TheScottishIsle I absolutely LOVE ❤️ YOUR DRESSES! In fact I’ve been wondering if you sew them yourself and if so, did you make the pattern or have one to share? I sew for myself and my daughter and would love to give it a try. I really like the tailored, and vintage look!
I do sew and really enjoy it, but I haven't made my own clothes for some while. All these dresses need altering now, and I'll take them in soon enough! Maybe if you're looking at getting a pattern for the style, check out Banned Retro's swing dresses. If you already sew, I bet you can figure out a pattern from looking at them on a model, as they're so simply made. If one dress of mine does become unusable, I promise I'll take it apart and make a pattern! Kx

For the sheep might consider a portable radio, to placed where you want fertilizer😊
Came to say the same hah. I vote for more music for the sheep 😊🐑🐑🤍🎶
Make a cart for the sheep to haul the logs back ! 😀
I would use the water to your advantage, tie the logs together and float them around to the house.
Yes, definitely..tie the larger ones chainwise and tow them?
Each of your videos takes me somewhere that fills me with peace, beauty and gentle warmth ... thanking you with grace ..
Sheep Dung makes very good fertiliser😁 ..what a beautiful place to chop wood…
You did the right thing cutting down the reeds. The sheep could not forage on it with it being that high. You are both doing it great job.

Have you ever looked into carts made with bicycle wheels, can carry a lot with not much effort
Thanks!
🥰 Thank you so much! Kx
The "dont know what this is" before the old water tank at 10.12mins is quite possibly the telecoms distribution point
Oh, it's so long since I heard a curlew! Thank you.
We'll try and record some more. Such a haunting, beautiful sound. Kx
I thought I could hear Oyster catchers rather than Curlew…
Love y'alls wardrobe. Practical yet appealing.

So very happy for you both. God bless you. Love from Texas❤
I love the idea of planting wildflowers and maybe one beehive to start, that would be fantastic. 💜🐝
Another great video, my grandfather was from the Hebrides, came to Canada after WWII, we use to love to listen to him speak Gaelic, and he often called fern bracken. Also your new microphones are doing their job.
What beautiful bird songs ❤
You’ll have to build shoots/Gully’s and have a winch to pull the logs over the rugged ground to your house
Love your episodes take care and enjoy your time on your island. Much love from the United States
Definitely try floating the logs round, behind a dinghy or just walked back on a long rope. Choose the appropriate tides to work with you though (coming in, not going out😉). Good luck🙂🌸

Works great with the wind!
Wishing you both well. Thanks for all of this. ✨
Might want to look into a log spliter. Then you could transfer smaller bits
If a wheel barrow you want to use use the ones with 2 wheels😊
It's your land, do what you want. Not sad that you gut weeds, etc. , happy for you.
I think Scott’s a spirit for sure.
Argh, I sai Scott SAW a spirit, stupid auto correct.
😨
I am told that snails and deer do not like the smell of sheep's wool. But if it is very wet and the smell is not released, the snails can take shelter under the wool. Maybe something to try
Every angle you film from is just stunning ❤ love ur rain hat and rain coat !! great video guys ❤
I love spending time on the island and learning many things. The journey is educational and beautiful….love you both 🤗🤗
Make a rough sled to haul the wood, rollers under to go over the ground or just runners.
loving the hat! styling it well!
Bracken is indeed a fern: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracken so you're both right. Thanks for another great video.
I have 🐝’s and there is something so magical about them xx
Place an outdoor speaker for them. Away from the house.😊
I wouldn’t put glass on that old water tank for a coffee table, it doesn’t need glass-looks great as a coffee table as it is.
Love the interplay between the two of you! Some really funny stuff.
The new microphone definitely did well in the wind.
This is such a amazing space
Hello glad to be back to trying to catch up😊
The building must have blown or washed away.
I thought for a sweet moment the bagpipes had gone - frightened the life outa me lol
🤣
Hunting season going on here in wisconsin. I’ll be making sausages! The kids brought home venison for their granny! Yeah!

Thanks another interesting video😊
chop that wood in place use an old bed sheet to load wood into 1 at the front 1 at the back easier than a wheel barrow on that terrain i would think
$10.00
Hi Katie & Scott I love your videos & banter too each other. Keep up the good work 🫶
Thanks so much!! We certainly will try. 😁 Kx

Float the wood on a pontoon x
Wood floats. You could tie the pieces of wood into a log boom and tow it back with the row boat. Bigger pieces would be better and you can cut it when you get to the home beach
The mics now pick up the right amount of wind. I don't want to be shielded from the sounds too much.
Here in Alaska, we live next to the ocean. When we harvest seaweed for our compost, we rinse the salt out of it.... do you do that also?
How do you do that???
@raynonabohrer5624 we get seaweed off the beach and soak it in rain water before adding it to dirt. Get most of the salt out
You could always build a raft and float the wood round to the cottage tie it all together and paddle it round 🤣🤣🤣
You know, that's not necessarily a daft idea...just float the logs round... 🤔
Yes pacific NW US used to move a huge amount of logs via river floats
I was thinking, too bad you don’t have a horse and a low, shallow type of sled. Load the wood and have the horse bring up to the cottage yard. 🤷♂️
If you have two kayaks, create a bit of a net between the two and float the wood around.
And at one point lumber was rafted down both the Mississippi, & the Missouri. They are still harvesting lumber from both rivers
Please...just buy a boat! An old Dell Quay Dory is perfect for what you need, cheap and indestructible.
Love the channel!
We will, we're saving up!! Looking at a Pioner Multi as an option....very second hand, of course...
That would be a good option, especially with the drop-bow section. I mentioned the dory because I see so many of them lying decaying everywhere, so maybe very cheap. You could make a small raft and tie with ropes and ferry the logs…

LOL My mind went blank. Kx
Aye up you two. Google earth perhaps? Great stuff as usual.
Can’t you take the log round in the kayaks?
So interesting the conclusion of the building on the island. Makes sense though for sure.
The microphones worked so well no wind noise at all. Do they work with your phone camera or do you use a camera with them?
Loving the videos x
Maybe add a pack mule to your menagerie. Like the old mountain men in the US.
We'd certainly give a home to a wee pony!
Just a question on your growing beds. I thought you said the one in front of the house had to go because it was sending damp into the living room. Did you resolve that? Love your content thank you.
We are looking into potentially having to put a damp-proof membrane all along the front of the house, digging it down into the ground.
A drone would be helpful for you to see more clearly the lay of the land.
perhaps a Cranog?
Is there any way to rent a boat for the day to haul that wood?
A sled might be more practical than a wheelbarrow.
Who cut the wood originally and left it there ?
A lumberjack cuts down the very large trees that need felling.
@@submarineUK ….. That’s nice of them…. Free wood for the fire 🙂
❤
Do you think the vikings where on the island ? X
They made a settlement just over from us on the mainland, so it's very likely they at least stomped around here.
You need a wagon to help transport logs and stuff.
You have unbelivebel good weater 😮we have rain for 5weeks now pfff😢 good luck with the logs it,s a problem Maybe get a horse to help you shift the logs ?
That would be ideal!
👍
Are y'all planning to gather wool from the sheep?
Yes, we will.

I find the hat perfectly reasonable! But the starring in the camera in the opening sequence....rather disturbing. 😮😂
Are you guys well protected by storm's
It's really sheltered in the bay where we are. The most recent storms didn't affect us at all!
@@TheScottishIsle I was thinking that , really enjoying the channel.. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you! My paternal side is from Fermanagh, so hello right back! 😊
Scott of Antarctica. Or hebradis. Build a raft
Whose boat is that off shore?
No idea, we've not met them yet! It's permanently moored there. Kx
A couple of goats will help with the weeds n reeds
And pull wood.
or if you have a kayak tow it round with the kayak
Sheep poo will probably make fine manure for your beds

The life is not for me but I enjoy watching. Winter is going to be a bitch….
Where's the round shape?
It's the high tide water mark on a neighbouring island.
Its bracken. At its its worst becomes a monoculture.
I worry about you when you become 70 like me and you won’t be able to do what you just did physically.
If I don’t see the hat and eyeglass in the next ten episodes I’m unsubscribing …..😂😂
