Michelangelo might disagree with you After Pizza man delivers late pizza: "Wise Man says forgiveness is divine but never pay full price for late pizza" After the foot barge into April's apartment: "And I thought insurance salesman were pushy" After seeing the Shredder for the 1st time: Leo: Anybody know who or what that is? Mikey: "I don't know but I bet he never has to ask for a can opener." 😂
Raph has always had solid adaptations of his personality in both live action and animation. What always made him fascinating was that he is both a tough loner type while at the same time had a heart of gold.
This is definitely my favourite TMNT film, and one of my favourite portrayals of Raph, but I feel like he’s written relatively well in most versions that I’ve seen/read. I’m somewhat partial to the 2012 Nickelodeon version because I could relate to him so strongly at the time, because he was so emotional and sensitive. Admittedly he had some rather mean-spirited moments, but he and all the other turtles grown and improve over time, and he was always a sympathetic character.
I did not like 2012 Mikey.. at all. Being Beyond annoying and immature. I thought the 1990s and 89 cartoons at the best Mikey; even the 2007 wasn't that bad.. maybe.
Thank you so much, dude. I'd love to do another deep dive into this movie on other characters, too, but Raphael is definitely the one with the most to talk about!
Yo, the reason Michelangelo wasn't mentioned in the montage was because he had an entire cut character arc, super interesting. Mikey was originally going to become reclusive and filled with rage while they took refuge at the farm house. Tons of proof of this has been coming out lately and its really cool!
Great analysis and I couldn’t agree more. Raph has always been my favorite turtle. I liked him in the 80s cartoon and loved him in the 1990 movie. The personality shift was, of course noticeable, but it felt like it fit the character well. It was a surprisingly emotionally nuanced movie, thanks in large part to Raph’s story and of course Jim Henson’s amazing animatronics. Raph is the shit. A flawed warrior with a heart of gold.
Raph is the raw muscle of the group. His flaws cloud his judgement but remember, he saved April from the foot single handedly and was handing the foot a stellar ass whooping on the rooftop by himself until he was eventually overpowered and thrown through the sky light. He doesn't over think and over analyze everything like Leonardo does and isn't afraid to put his entire body and life on the line at the drop of a hat.
On the surface, it looks like Raph was just trying not to be seen, so escaped to the sewer with April. But, you're probably right - deep inside, his character sought connection with the outside world, which drove him to stick by her side. I will always keep loving this movie, more and more over time.
Raph took the risk none of his brothers took, the risk to be seen. I never noticed the smile he gave when April thanked him on TV (picture was always too dark, still is :) ).
Not only does he seek connection with the world, he wants Splinter back. No wonder he LOVED fighting the Foot on April's roof - he wasn't getting anywhere with his brothers downstairs. That rooftop fight was the "lead" he was seeking - it's so hard to watch him face it all alone.
as a kid i never thought of that stuff. as an adult i just assumed he had crush on her. after watching this i think he onto something too. but i dk i still lean towards crush side.
I like that their colors match their personalities. Ralph is fiery, hot headed and unpredictable. Leo is cool headed, consistent, and honorable. Donnie is cerebral, transformative, and creative. Mikey is fun, energetic, and silly.
This movie is why Raph is my favorite turtle and I'm glad they kept his personality from this movie because in the 80s cartoon he was less of a hot head and more of a smart ass. Like you I loved Raph in OG cartoon but my Fandom for Raph exploded thanks to this movie
I was 2 when this movie came out. 4th birthday was tmnt themed. Raph has always been my favorite turtle, originally for his quippy nature in the ‘87 cartoon series thanks to Rob Paulson’s performance but this film really did flesh out his character to the point of solidifying him as my favorite ninja in all media. The upcoming last ronin movie will probably have my grown ass in tears at a theater 🤣 TURTLE POWER
Great analysis. One thing that I noticed that many people did not. Watch the scene when Splinter reaches the rooftop closely. Mikey calls out to him _Splinter!_ It looks like Mikey is going to go to his master, but Raph smartly grabs Mikey's shoulder and holds him back. Raph also says, _it's him!_ when the Shredder takes off his mask, showing that they know of the man who murdered their surrogate grandparents, Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen.
I really liked this version of Raphael. I liked him in general, which always was kind of an unpopulair opinion. When you think of it, he might challenge Leonardo with being the most emotionally mature one considering they are teenagers. None of them are without flaws. And they all have their own way to deal with being isolated. Raphael is clearly displeased with it, showing it in him being hotheaded. Leonardo masks it with discipline. Michelangelo deals with it by eating pizza and snacking, obviously. Donatello questions it, as shown in the scene where he picks up the pizza with Michelangelo. But he doesn't seem to have an answer in how to deal with it, nor is he getting one from Michelangelo. Then both of them have their snack moments together later.
I rolled my eyes and expected the worst when I saw the title of this video, and I was happily humbled by the simultaneously penetrating and unassuming/self-effacing tone of your analysis. Well done, sir. I am sad to hear your suggestion that this is not your usual style of video.
This kind of praise is very special, and I am truly appreciative. To be honest, the main reason that I don't often do this style of video is because they are time consuming, and I rarely get much of a response. However, comments like these absolutely encourage me to consider doing more.
The moment u see his hand grab the sai, and you hear the metal scrape, and then his slow built up scream while he kicks butt. That scene always got me.
Shredder taught the foot clans. And you only become a ninja after the Shredder chooses you. Sure, some of them may have become ninja after doing something stupid, but most of them become a ninja after proving their skills in the art of ninjutsu
I’d love if we’d get a movie that puts a larger focus on the dynamic between Donnie and Mikey. The Ralph/Leo focus is understandable but pretty much every Tmnt movie uses it and I’m personally sick of it by now. The 1990 movie is my favorite tmnt flick, so not trying to take anything away from it. But the Donnie and Mikey scenes are some of my favorite.
The Leo and Raph tension is because Raph was older than Leo and resented his leadership. From Don and Mike's perspective, being the younger two made a closer bond as Don also sought to be protective of Mikey.
YESSSS!!!! Been saying this for decades!!! Raph was the best in the first movie. The full New York accent. Full New York attitude. Full New York mannerisms!!! Look at his walk when he comes out the theater. That New York style walk. Look at this hand gestures when he encounters K.C. Jones. His Brooklyn mannerisms. CLASSIC!! He was the only one that really represented New York style.
Thanks for making this video. As a kid that grew up on the 03 turtles it was really cool to revisit that series and this movie at in older age. After reading the some of the comics its hard not to love Raf and emphasize the complexity he holds as a character and the depth he can help tell in tmnt stories.
Maybe people drop and lose their money and somehow it finds its way into the sewer? Or Donatello has some side hustle with his computer (kind of like TMNT does) don't ask me HOW he goes to the bank to get his money. Lol
Nice video, and great use of the soundtrack from the "Turtles In Time" arcade game! Yeah, this Raphael was one of the best interpretations of the character, especially as he's closer to the moody violent hothead from the original Mirage comics. The Brooklyn accent that Josh Pais brought to his voice was the icing on the cake (or the extra cheese on the pizza!).
1990 Raphael was my biggest crush when I was little but I have no idea why I guess it was because he liked that news reporter girl and idk why but it made me feel something 🥺🧎♀️
Raphael has always been my absolute favorite since FOREVER! But as much as I love the Raph from the 1990 movie, the 2012 Raphael is a close second. I don't remember much of the Saban series (thank the blessed Gods), or the 2000s series. Shown no interest in the RotTMNT or the Micheal Bay movies. In the 2012 series, they gave him growth. When Leo was out of commission it was Raph who stepped up as a temporary leader. They addressed his anger issues which caused him to become a better fighter. He even learned to rise over his phobias and even when "Mona Lisa" was injured learned to properly channel his rage and take on an enemy that previously wiped the floor with all of them. Plus he is the surrogate father of potentially Gamera's love child with another flying fire-breathing giant turtle.
Great video man. Raphael is hands down my favorite turtle as well ever since I was a little kid. He is so relatable and even though I may not personally struggle with anger, I still relate to him and I'm sure everyone else can as well to some degree or another.
I agree with the title. When I was a kid watching the cartoon before the first movie came out Leonardo was my fav cuz he was the leader, but when the 1990 movie came out n I saw how Raphael was I related to him the most, he wasn’t afraid to do things by himself. And he was a certified bad azz! He’s been my favorite ever since I seen the first movie.
Fuck... revisiting that "Raph (turtles) lost Splinter" scene made me realize I used to empathize with him hardcore. It wouldn't have meant as much if any other turtle had done it, but you knew at that point that Raph would KILL to get Splinter back. His love for Spinter was emphasized through his pain and rage, and he made the clear in that moment.
Loved this movie since it came out. The 2nd was great too. The animated movie from 2007(I believe) was good too. The story itself wasn't particularly great. But the dynamic between him and Leo was really good.
I always love to hear new analyses of this movie. I saw it at age 6 in 1990, so all the themes didn't hit me then, but they do today, so keep the analyses coming. E.g., this movie is a very good representation of the immigrant experience in the U.S., children raised by traditional parents eventually face a modern, secular world outside as soon as they turn on the TV or leave the house. As a child of immigrants, it took me 31 years to find this YT video and draw this conclusion. I am certain this film will continue to give and give, into perpetuity. It's a masterpiece.
When I was in a band i considered my cousin (guitar and vocals) to be the Raph of the 4. Always quick to turn red and state his opinions no matter what. My buddy on rhythm guitar/vocals was like Mikey, always talking about pizza and being a goof. Bass player was like Donny. We called him The Tech! He was always solving electrical issues. And me, similar to Leo A bit more stoic and the mediator of the 4. Damn I miss making music with those dudez. 🍕 🎶
Donatello is my favorite Turtle since i was a kid, i liked his genius and wise and calmer attitude (also favorite weapon) but i do relate a lot with Raph , ive been hotheaded my whole life and i know whats it like to have similar issues ,hes not a bad guy or just edgy, he's just a very emotional dude
This is probably the reason why Partners in Kryme had him as the leader in the song "Turtle Power" "Raphael... *He's the leader of the group*, transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop."
Raph has always been my favorite turtle. And i as well Liked characters only because the were red. Heck i still would rather play a player 2 in old games just because P2 was almost always red. Lol i never grew out of it.
LOVED this video. Totally spot on. Would love to hear your take on his character from he 2012 Nick cartoon show. Behind this movie, that version is my second favorite version of the character. Thanks again for the....BITCHIN' video. ;-)
Thank you so much dude! I really want to do a deep dive on the 2012 version, I just don't know when I'll have the time to cram in five seasons to be able to form an accurate opinion... Hopefully, someday!
People lose money pretty often, or at least they did back in the day. Like... Whoops, it fell out of my pocket, or whoops i accidentally threw some away with the trash. People can be really careless, so I guess as a kid I just assumed they found it around. Raph has always been my favorite of the turtles. In the cartoon I liked how he acted, but especially in the first movie. He was just a total badass.
If you haven't heard of or read it yet, you NEED to read Kenn Scott's book "Teenage Ninja to Mutant Turtle: Becoming the Reel Raphael" It's by the unsung hero who played Raph's stunt man in the first movie and was his performance actor in the second one.
I wanted you to mention Casey Jones "frenemy" observation, a la "Mind tellin' me what you're doin to my little green pal over there", but that would be an abstract reference. I find it cathartic, tho, as he once fucked with Raph and the two shared respect because of the scrap. I think a lot of us have had moments where we wanted to kick someone's ass, and either did or ALMOST did and came away with more respect. Hence the concept of gang canonization.
Ahh, great observation!! I really should have taken note of it, because I liked that showing of mutual respect, too; the idea that Casey easily recognises that Raph is actually a good guy, and comes to help him out at the antique store.
Agree 100% Was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theatre when I was 5 years old Still remember to this day being so excited. Still the best tmnt movie one of my favourite movies
Josh pais did an a amazing job as Raphael he really captures the anger and attitude I hate how secret of the ooze they got a different actor who isnt nearly as great as pais
I'll say this about Raphael: If there was one thing that irked me with the sequel to the 1990 TMNT movie "Secret of the Ooze" its that the character arc Raph went on in this one was ignored. In this movie he starts off, to me, as the angry outcast, knowing that everyone will be afraid of him, he can't live out in the open because of how he looks and that he must always live in the shadows. On top of that he felt like his brothers didn't understand why he was so angry so he ends up going off on his own, which nearly cost him his life, and in turn forced him to realize that Splinter was right: he needs his brothers more then the other way around and that he can't let his anger cloud his mind. "Secret of the Ooze" ignored all of that and, to me, turned Raph from a character who learned his lesson about teamwork, family and not letting anger control you back to someone who's self centered and wants to do things his way.
Raph has the Sais due to it being a defensive weapon, to teach him patience. Mike has chucks in order to teach him to be more careful and to take combat serious. Don has a simple Bo to help with his creativity. Not sure why Leo got dual swords. Because he is perfect in splinters eyes?
I haven't started the video yet... Raph and KC become best friends. So that right there is all you need to know... but also Raph almost dies, he's definitely the strongest most violent hardcore of his brothers.... and also the most sensitive. When Splinter is giving him that talk about how he chooses to face things alone and Raph has that single tear..... God damn!
My favorite Turtle was originally Michelangelo. However, when this movie came out, I came around to Raphael. He's pretty darn relatable, and marches to the beat of his own drum.
Raph had the best lines in this movie.
Danny: "Don't shoot!"
Raph, holding a sai: "I don't think it's loaded, kid."
Michelangelo might disagree with you
After Pizza man delivers late pizza:
"Wise Man says forgiveness is divine but never pay full price for late pizza"
After the foot barge into April's apartment:
"And I thought insurance salesman were pushy"
After seeing the Shredder for the 1st time:
Leo: Anybody know who or what that is?
Mikey: "I don't know but I bet he never has to ask for a can opener." 😂
Raph has always had solid adaptations of his personality in both live action and animation. What always made him fascinating was that he is both a tough loner type while at the same time had a heart of gold.
I don't think so. I'd say he was toned down for every iteration accept his 90s film version.
@@blueblur2273 you think 2012 Raph was toned down? And what about 2007 Raph?
What about the 2018 tv show? Rise of the TMNT? He wasn’t really much of a loner and I feel they changed his personality a LOT.
1st movie Raph and 2003 series Raph are my favorites. Angry, impulsive, sarcastic, and yet sensitive and very protective of those he loves.
I could not agree more, and I have been a TMNT fan since 1987 when the original cartoon began.

Raph is the raw muscle of the group. I know he had a crush. But I’m confident Raphael wants friends that’s why he’s out a lot. He wants to meet people.
Also in the end scene while his brothers are celebrating
He’s hugging his dad

I literally laughed out loud!
It's kidnapped by the foot?

“Yea a little too Ralph” 😂 good one !

Can we take note that Raph was the only turtle to get a clean hit (kick) on Shredder, showing his brute force works
Not just Raph. Leo cut Shredder in the arm. Could be argued whether that was clean or not.

"Raphael... *He's the leader of the group*, transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop."
Got Sean Astin's and Rob Paulsen's autographs on a Raphael POP! from 2022 Los Angeles Comic Con.
As a kid, Leo was my favorite turtle, now Raph is my favorite.
Raph has always been my favorite turtle. And i as well Liked characters only because the were red. Heck i still would rather play a player 2 in old games just because P2 was almost always red. Lol i never grew out of it.
Raph is my spirit animal 🤘🏻❤️
I always assumed they took a few bucks off the criminals they beat up
Great analysis man!
I have always liked cowabunga!
If you haven't heard of or read it yet, you NEED to read Kenn Scott's book "Teenage Ninja to Mutant Turtle: Becoming the Reel Raphael" It's by the unsung hero who played Raph's stunt man in the first movie and was his performance actor in the second one.
Oooh ill give this a look thanks mate!

"probably getting stabbed, it was the early 90s"
wow.. so much had changed in NYC
Raphael is truly the Best yes!
Agree 100%
Was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theatre when I was 5 years old
Still remember to this day being so excited. Still the best tmnt movie
one of my favourite movies
My favorite character is Ralph too.
I loved Mikey as a kid but watching the movies Raphael is almost the main character to me
Josh pais did an a amazing job as Raphael he really captures the anger and attitude I hate how secret of the ooze they got a different actor who isnt nearly as great as pais
I'll say this about Raphael:
If there was one thing that irked me with the sequel to the 1990 TMNT movie "Secret of the Ooze" its that the character arc Raph went on in this one was ignored.
It’s also the best ninja movie ever
Raph has the Sais due to it being a defensive weapon, to teach him patience. Mike has chucks in order to teach him to be more careful and to take combat serious. Don has a simple Bo to help with his creativity. Not sure why Leo got dual swords. Because he is perfect in splinters eyes?
Leo was given swords to be a more decisive leader.
Raphael is my hero.
Just watched that yesterday. You're absolutely right! Well done sir
Very good analysis.
Dude, I bet you hated seeing what happens to Raph in the Urban Legends comic series.
Plus, the fact that he dresses up like Shredder at one point. Urban Legends was a very dark TMNT storyline.
I really appreciate this video I always felt like raphael growing up.
This analysis is on point. As a kid when Raphael lost his stuff like Nick Cage, I never forgot about that storyline. Felt it.
This is true! So true!!
Jesus.. Why don't you have more subscribers??
Thanks dude, I really appreciate the comment - it means a lot to hear that. I'll just keep on keeping on and see if it ever takes off!
Great video!!
