Essentially, you can light yourself with only one key light and use bounces for the fill and rim/hair.
Alternatively, a clam-shell setup (1 key light centered from above and fill from below) also works great for guitar playing.

Another tip I can give you is trying to reframe your video in post as to make the vertical lines (such as your speakers and wall lines) in the background be perpendicular to the horizontal lower part of your frame. dunno if i'm any clear tho, there should be a "restraigten angle" option in your video software. A single degree change can assure your picture to look pro in an instant. You can also tackle this while shooting.
    Great video overall, as always.

Great tips (and this is coming from a professional photographer). I think the goal of the person will dictate how far to go to create more professional looking content. For someone who wants to make a living as a musician or RUclipsr, then investing the time and energy into creating a more professional look will be non-negotiable, but for the people who just do it as a hobby and uploads covers now and then, it really doesn't matter. In fact, the lack of polish adds to the casual hobbyist charm.

You can find $15-20 lightboxes on Amazon/AliExpress that take 2/4 bulbs per fixture, which you will have to buy separately. 1 bulb per fixture is typically not enough output.
Make sure the bulbs you buy are LED (so that they don't radiate heat in infrared) and of higher color accuracy (CRI >85) than the regular cheap ones that produce an unpleasant green tint on camera.

  • @thet740

What I'm curious on is how everyone does their sound. Do you record the video live with the guitar signal going through an interface and use that audio? Or is it pre-recorded and then sort of 'mimic' playing? I'm sure there are folks out there that do both. Which works better for you and why?

    • @EthanRadell
