In 2015 Paul gave me private guitar lessons. He was very good in his job, and kind, I didn't have to pay the last bill because I had to go to hospital. So funny he is now a teacher in the world.
I have had a Les Paul for a short time, but I gave it away, because I love a short sustain. By the way, I'm home now, I'm doing very well. My dream now is a Ruokangas Hellcat. Is that a good idea to play Dragonforce, or do I have to buy a Ibanez or Music Man to do that?
The actual audio from the phone was still much better than I expected. I expected it to be complete static. That's at least what it sounds like on my phone
I also thought that the phone sound is still very good. Just not good enough for professional recording but if you want to do some home guitar recordings, then this phone would do
As a hobbyist home producer I've had interesting results recording acoustic guitar using Apple's earbuds. The bud with the mic goes in the sound-hole and the other in my ear as a monitor (Note: I use an Adamas where the sound-hole is nowhere near the strings). I use a simple audio track in Garageband and add compression and reverb afterwards. I'm impressed with the deep lows that I get! Keep very still when you play :)
No recording engineer is going to say “Mr. McCartney, I've hooked up my iPhone ... ready to go when you are” but it's worth remembering that Michelle Shocked had a very successful album recorded on a Walkman Pro. Getting some ideas down counts for more than saving up for better equipment.
OMG! Are people really watching this video on their phone and then saying that they can't really hear any difference... ? *shakes head in disagreement*
On a phone speaker it's really hard to hear the difference, true. I come back in a few days with the stats about how many peeps watch this on a phone (of course I don't know how many will use earphones, or decent earbuds!)
Maybe it depends on what you call 'big' but if you listen closely to the low frequencies you hear an 'underwater' effect or something 'woofy' on the phone recordings that you cannot deny once you heard it. Also the highs are not nice at all but in that case I could agree that the difference is not huge. Cheers.
When you began to edit and I've started to listen to the phone, I've thought "well, he's overreacting, this is actually good", but when you started playing with the mic, I was blown away, so much difference
I didn't know I could record mono vs stereo on a Samsung S8....wtf??? Great video Paul, love it! I'm shopping right now and I'm not sure if I'm going to go Samsung S20 vs S10.......
My acoustic Professor told us that the Microphones in Smartphones cost about 0.7€ (about 0.82$) Their dynamic range and frequency range aren't really great. As well as their Sound Pressure which is most times less than 110dB No wonder you can "Upgrade" the microphone with an external ones which cost less than 20$ :D Great Work on the Video and keep it up ;) More Music Theory content would be nice Hail from Germany
Great video as usual 👍 Got to say that most of the time I'm watching your channel on my smartphone with no headset. Now I was shocked to hear almost no difference at all between the two recordings here, and I have a pretty decent ear. Both recordings sounded good coming of the speaker of the phone, to my surprise.
"The phone is a toy compared to the studio microphone" - I thought he was going to say that it was not worth spending the price tag of a studio microphone, cause to me, using headphones, it sounded the same.
I could be wrong, that "noise" you were discussing around 4:00 minutes sounds like distortion that comes from too much gain from the source. So, the smartphone's input mics are gained up too high. However, that makes sense for phone calls. The Neumann sounds SOOOOO much better, but the input could be gained down before recording. The same "low-mid" muddy sound is sort of present, but only to someone who knows what to look for. I enjoyed this video! Thank you for making it!
Im watching this on my phone through my car stereo...it sounds great Paul, it sounds like a bass is accompanying you, it sounds really good, thanks for the awesome video!
Please release a full version of this song, sounded awesome! Ps, just saw your latest video and that this tune is included in it. Sorry for wasting your time :P still sounds awesome! Thanks for being such a great inspiration
The phone wasn't quite as bad as I expected it to be but the dynamics you can hear with the mic makes the biggest difference for me. The extra lows added a fullness to the sound
I could really tell a quality difference on the side by side comparison. But, does listening to this over RUclips degrade both recordings by a noticeable amount or some measurable amount? Nice informative vid too :)
If you want an alternative: Shure MV88 stereo condensor mike for about €135 street price. Worth every penny. Easy to use. Not only great for demos but for filming with the iPhone in general. Combined with a cheap gimbal the results are amazing. Downside is that you can only use it with iOS/lightning.
Great playing Paul! Android has known issues with audio latency. It would be interesting to try the same test with an iPhone. Neumann sound beautiful. Tom
Proof that dedicated devices tend to blow "general purpose" devices out of the water when compared on that single purpose :D For what it is the smartphone in this video's sound wasn't that bad. For. what. it. is. A multipurpose device with the ability to make a quick recording when "out and about" or when inspiration strikes at an inconvenient time. Have you ever considered to try picks from Essetipicks? They're very interesting because they're shaped in a different way than a standard plectrum, and using them i felt less tired playing and the strings lasted much longer in my opinion. These picks are made of various materials (from cheap Nylon and Kevlar to expensive ones made in coconut, tagua nut, bone, wood, galalith, horn and ceramic), but once you try one probably you won't get back to standard picks

The phone is still way too good for a black metal recording.
IE B even though this is probably just a joke, although it could be used I still think cheap mics are better for that kind of thing.
the phone is literally made of black metal

I must say, your soothing voice is the best part of the video.
The song he played is "In the Heartland'' by the great Mark Knopfler. From the soundtrack of 'Wag the Dog'.
Thanks dude
I was wondering about that. I thought it almost sounded like Romeo And Juliet, so I guess that makes sense.
Wes Leurs thank you so much!
You're welcome. I still don't know why he didn't credited the song in the video or description
Omg I was thinking it sounded like him (Im a fan)
Honestly, I think the phone sounds pretty good for what it is. Definitely great for capturing quick ideas.
No recording engineer is going to say “Mr. McCartney, I've hooked up my iPhone ... ready to go when you are” but it's worth remembering that Michelle Shocked had a very successful album recorded on a Walkman Pro. Getting some ideas down counts for more than saving up for better equipment.
the phone is very practical to record ideas that come out at the moment of inspiration, excellent video 🖒
The smartphone mic is kind of like starting with a compressed jpeg and editing it in Lightroom, vs working with a RAW file (the Neumann).
Holy shit I had the exact same thought haha

I'm watching on my desktop computer and wearing headphones I really do not hear a big difference
