15 years driving big rig here. My advice for anyone who is looking for a truck to buy for first time. Series 60 and cat engines are the best. If you are not in california buy those without def. But if you are in california then there's not much choice. Never buy cat motor if that truck has def system because it gonna keep blowing turbo.
Cat engine with Def, they quit making truck engines before Def, it was egr that ended them. Max force were Cat blocks at beginning only, then blocks came from Europe. Tell me which Cat eng had Def in trucks.
I'd go another step and say skip the dpf only trucks as well. Honestly, I'd take the def ones before the dpf only rigs, but skipping both is best if possible. And yeah, no true highway cat had def. But a guy should still skip the dpf cats. I'd even add the N14 Cummins as a good buy, but they're getting up there in age.
@@tangydiesel1886 so again, which Hiway trucks had DPF as none had EGR, in the Cat engine option, construction machinery is a different storyline, as as the EPA tiers rose so did emissions treatment, but Cat went out of On Hiway engines as they wouldn't go with EGR.
I worked in a non-diesel shop at one point, and the one thing I couldn't understand is why some mechanics would be so guarded and not want customers to know their own vehicles, having basic knowledge about your car or truck makes it easier to point a good mechanic or technician in the right direction and save you both time. We had the low oil pressure problem on a DD13 in a Fire Truck. Unfortunately we didn't catch it in time and it cost us $50,000 for a complete engine replacement. There is a recall on this problem but our truck was not included in the recall even though it was the exact same issue! Engine had less than 40,000 miles on it! We also had a problem with the oil cooler causing oil and coolant to mix. These Detroit DD13'S (mostly a rebadged Mercedes engine) seem to be way too fragile for Emergency vehicles. We have had numerous other problems with them as well but I don't have all day to list them all! Also, because our engines were not part of the recall, we received NO notification of the low oil pressure issue and Detroit Diesel flatly refused to cover any part of it! Big thanks to TAT Express for putting this information out there!!

If a single scratch is seen on any bearing, the 550$ cost of the parts is great piece of mind.
One of the biggest issues i encounter are with the Oil Pick Up Tube. Unfortunately Detroit thought it would be a smart idea to make it with plastic. Over time the heat/vibration can cause the pick up tubes to crack and you will lose all oil pressure. This can and almost always happens while you're driving and causes engine failure. DD13/15/16 will all fail if they run 7 - 10 seconds without oil pressure. SO if that pick up tube breaks, by the time that engine stops spinning you will need a whole rebuild or a whole new engine.
I ran a dd15 in a 2010 cascadia. Was great engine, pulled like a freight train. Only problem with it, lease truck from penske. Sensors go bad, we all know that. But they would replace the wrong ones and send it out the door. It was on a wrecker once a week for 6 months. Shut down while i was crossing the Chesapeake bay bridge! Wish I could go new, but... I know Cat's and Detroits. Gonna stick this the Detroit. I like Cat's, but damm it... You gotta pamper them... lol But, I ain't never a Dual Turbo...
Seems the problems you were describing were relevant to you around 500k miles. For the title of the video I'd definitely say it's anything to do with their after treatment specifically nox efficiency codes. Either the sensor or upstream management throughout the entire life of the truck. I can say for sure the company I work for which is nation wide and the largest fleet in the USA, after treatment is by far the biggest problem. Not on volvo or hino. Just Freightliner with the inventor of after treatment, cummins.
Main problems I know with DD 15 engines revolve around injectors. I've seen them crack liners, run backwards, run away, etc. I actually really like working on DD15 engines, I think they are easy, I currently work on volvo/mack engines and they suck. I do know that if you don't vac out the cylinder bores when doing injectors they will run backwards. Oil leaks are a problem but it is a Detroit. You have to do services right, the way I do them is that I will drain the oil and oil filter, change them add oil, start up, change fuel filters, grease truck, check oil again because it takes like 30 minutes to drain back to the pan. I know these because I worked on them, and my dad worked on them for a couple of years, even deleted they are not the best engines I've ever seen. Easy as hell to work on at least.
@@malyshevvasiliy9541 if I were to buy a new truck with a new engine, it would probably be a Peterbilt 389 with the X15 Performance Cummins engine. All engines have problems, but I prefer Cummins over the rest.
@@billywayne6104 neither of the engines I mentioned are from 1989. Cummins X15 started in 2015 or 16, based on the ISX from 2000, the junktastic DD15 started in 2007. Both are still made today and are current market engines. Cummins is, in my opinion the best current market engine you can buy.
We have two nice now junk cascadia DD trucks sitting outside the shop with the engines locked up from no pressure because the plastic oil manifold broke where the oil goes up into the block. Where it makes the turn to go up in the block it almost looks like a plastic plug that’s melted or molded in there from the factory on both trucks. That plug or cap blew out and it was basically pumping the oil right back into the pan Instead of up through the engine. We don’t reseal them we just throw them away and replace them just because we’ve seen that plastic piece break in two trucks in the last 5 months. Now any truck that comes in with around 500,000 it gets a Whole new pick up assembly. After seeing that we’re scared to reuse them unless it’s one of the older aluminum ones.
The facts are the one box is designed to fail, the two sealed filters in the bottom of the box are the same as the two very expensive ones you can clear are replace at the top for about 3500 plus labor. When the bottom two plug up your dealer is going to ask you for 18,000 to replace it. And it will also go bad in about 300,000 miles. The truth is you need to buy a glider.
Charles, I am not sure why Detroit designed the 1-box with the DOC made onto it. I think it would be better if the DOC could be removed and cleaned as well. This would be a good question for the engineers at Detroit.
Just giving you a shout out. my freightliner is leaking from the 3rd spot in your video. What is an estimate for the repair or how worried should I be? Thank you
Very informative videos. Question... What would lead to inconsistent oil levels on dipstick? I have 2(2014 DD15) trucks in my fleet starting to show low levels when i know they are not. Ex. checks ok in yard after sitting overnight on a pitch to passenger side. Pull into shop on level ground, let sit for 15 minutes after warm up and shows below MIN. Never use to do this before. Trucks are approaching 600k and 2 of the 4 are doing this.
Very Good Video! What would You consider as worktime to change fuel Return line on a cascadia ftl 116. there is afieldaction ongoing, my Dealer stated ist take 2,5 h. Thank you very much
Pete, that depends on what type of tow is being used. Thanks for watching and thank you for the support. Make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications.
Josif, if the truck is shutting down without any check engine lights I would start with checking the electrical starting and charging system. Batteries, electrical connections, and testing alternator.
You never answered the question or you avoided the question???? I think what most of us are wondering in a general round about way in your opinion being a shop owner what is the better truck or motor for an owner operator I think is a better way to ask.. We no there is no one perfect truck but at same time you owning a shop you must have some idea as to what may be a fairly decent truck/motor ...thx 🤙
Ali, over heating can be caused by various items. How many miles are on unit? I would start with checking the cooling system, fan clutch and radiator for restrictions.
Hey Adam can you please tell us what are the most common issues with the DD13 and DD16 engine models? Or do the same issues apply to both engines as the DD15? If not, can you explain what they are on the other engines please?
Hello my mechanic recommends I use Lucas oil stabilizer with each oil change. Oil we use is 15w40 . He Said it will give you more life out of your engine just brought two Cascades 2012. What do you think?
Adam, based on your experience and great knowledge, which engine brand do you recommend (preferably the most reliable) in a truck nowadays? A Detroit, Cummins or Paccar (or perhaps Volvo or Mack?) and which model engine from that manufacture? Let's say the truck will be used on a mixture of over the road and local runs hauling regular loads.

Ex. checks ok in yard after sitting overnight on a pitch to passenger side. Pull into shop on level ground, let sit for 15 minutes after warm up and shows below MIN. Never use to do this before. Trucks are approaching 600k and 2 of the 4 are doing this.
I love your videos those we went to school for Diesel we learn from you a lot bro tanks I took apart the dd13 at school

Good video.
Any suggestions or pointers on why a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia shuts down while I’m driving. Electrical problem ? Sensor(s) ?
Thanks.
Josif, if the truck is shutting down without any check engine lights I would start with checking the electrical starting and charging system. Batteries, electrical connections, and testing alternator.
Its power distribution knob
You never answered the question or you avoided the question???? I think what most of us are wondering in a general round about way in your opinion being a shop owner what is the better truck or motor for an owner operator I think is a better way to ask.. We no there is no one perfect truck but at same time you owning a shop you must have some idea as to what may be a fairly decent truck/motor ...thx 🤙
Good stuff Good info.ty for sharing... quick ?? .....Is 10psi at 600rpm idling & 48psi at 1500rpm normal for warm engine dd15 on a 16 FL Cascadia???
Can you please tell us the overheating issues when climbing the hell
Ali, over heating can be caused by various items. How many miles are on unit? I would start with checking the cooling system, fan clutch and radiator for restrictions.
Hey Adam can you please tell us what are the most common issues with the DD13 and DD16 engine models? Or do the same issues apply to both engines as the DD15? If not, can you explain what they are on the other engines please?
Hector, the same issue would apply. The platforms are similar. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe. 🔧💪🏼
Hector, I am a fan of all platforms. I would recommend one with a good maintenance history and a good inspection by a qualified mechanic. 💪🏼🔧
Good info
I really appreciate it buddy. If you haven't subscribed yet I would really appreciate it.
Do these issues apply to the D13 as well? I know they are quite similar engines. Thanks for the informative videos!
Daniel, if you are asking about DD13, than yes they are similar. Thanks for watching and thank you for the support. Make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications.

I have a problem with a fallen liner, coolant goes right to the oil pan. Will getting the liners and all the parts and gaskets replaced in the kit cover the entire job of my problem or do you think I will need a complete rebuild?
Hi man. How did it go?
Amazing
I got a 2015 freighter cascadia with a DD15 that has been loosing power loaded up hill its slows so bad it feels like am crawling. The speedometer drops to 0 but all other gauges are fine.. once unloaded & you turn it off for 15 min or so once you start it it works just fine up hill & the speedometer works. Been to 2 shops spent 2 k & still doing the same thing. Any advice for that would be greatly appreciated.
Dude TAT was literally JUST down at our shop wtf
How many miles should be drive. Before transmission oil is change/check on. DD15
What would I be looking at for a fuel pump, all 6 injectors and cleaning my tanks?/KD
