the way i figured out is tinning paste and the brass wool. The paste breaks down the crud then the wool cleans it off. 2 or 3 times for really dirty tips.

no my friend don't use that, that has lubricant.

because there is a short in your iron or the fuse box has a weak fuse.
That's a really complicated way of doing it.
its just mix flux and solder and scrap... that's all to it
