@@goodplacereviewer2495 Pretty much LOL, if you really want to know the story i've told it a few times on some podcasts I have appeared on, I think Hit The Lights Podcast I explained it.
Thank you guys for coming out and doing such a great job. I apologise again for the consumer unit location, I knew it was going to be awkward but you were all total heroes. And you didn't even mention that you turned up on the Thursday only to have me ask you to lower the Zappi down after you so carefully fixed it to the wall on the Tuesday! Oh, and you left your lunch in the fridge :)
Many locations of of incoming electrical supplies in older UK homes were in place long before fitted kitchens etc were the norm hence this is sometimes the reason for the obscure positioning of consumer units. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Mind-blowing to see a consumer hidden away under something or behind something. We normally have a dedicated space for them near the front door (Sweden). In some older houses they can be in some interesting places, like basements and whatnot.
Two things to keep in mind: 1. The houses that have the consumer unit or breaker box in a sensible position are not that old and don't yet need the units replaced nor other major electrical work. 2. Most of the UK's housing stock (and other infrastructure) was not destroyed in WWII, this means that today we live with the legacy of very old buildings and their ancient wiring. Much of the old infrastructure in continental Europe was obliterated and as a result is relatively new - having been rebuild in the decades following the war.
@@simongreenidge6454 I’d rather say, it is because Germany already had a standards body in 1893, along with a well developed apprenticeships & trade associations, pretty much developing out of the medieval guild system. On the other hand English electicians have pretty much made things up along the way until they were facing EU regulations in the 70s (in fact meeting a lot of the VDE norms that had been around for ages on the continent.) You hardly ever see anything as hopeless and dodgy even in 100y old German houses.
Thank You for making it so easy and entertaining to consume educational information. I feel like a kid again and I’m learning and soaking it all up like a sponge. A huge help for me as a DIYer and my camper van solar electrical project
If the meter board comes off just leave meter and cutout on it put some new wall plugs in and put meter board back. Just use some large metal washers if the holes have been cut quite big for the old porcelain spacers, Iv changed loads due to wood work or wood rot.
Oh man, Dan is so nice & professional, I can't believe he didn't twig. Now you'll have given him a complex where he'll wonder if it's you all the time, it was funny though but hats off to Dan.
One of the best, so funny, the phone call was absolutley brilliant, what a fantastic crew! As said below great to see Rouben growing into the role and Lee is a great addition to the team.
Cory., 7 years of Art school.!! Does that include Kindergarden ?. I think the 7 years of Improv. school are paying off though. That was the funniest video . nice way to finish out the day. Good work on that horrible consumer unit change out. I think myself it should be red tagged for inaccessability. Just because it is where it is should not make it okay. Are there any building codes that neeed to be followed there or building inspectors with city, county or national standards. I think it is an insurance liability issue. Just because it can be done does not mean you should do it. Remember last hands on the work carries all the faults of what has gone before. That attic looked like a mess electrically. you all pulled it out of the toilet though and seem to be gelling as a team. No tats though. Jordan are you watching this!!!
I'm in Australia and it seems rather odd seeing where consumer units get fitted in UK. You guys have some good ideas regs wise etc but... I'm still curious why CPC isn't insulated in your twin and earth. Is it same in other parts of Europe. And nice work Jordan with the little intro in your description mentioning the guys names' More chance of some correct spelling...
Cheaper and theres no real need to insulate the earth. Earth is used to bond exposed conductive parts anyway so doesn't really matter that its not insulated. Armour is also used for CPC in some cases. We are supposed to sleeve the earth at the fitting though
I'm thinking some work in some nice, tight crawlspace with spiderweb n stuff. Thing I hate about all those home improvement shows, where they're standing in some new, empty basement sweating pristine copper pipe... Show us how *real world* trades folk get down! That said, kudos on this one... Definitely a PITA ... Take a few weeks before doing the spider-filled crawlspace!
15:46 I am afraid that you are going to be finding ferules for the next year randomly in the van. You could always set the un-clipped box of them on Jordan's Tesla's dash board! 😁😁👍👍
Just watched the video what awesome content u guys are making love the ending was hilarious 😂😂 i haven't stopped watching your videos since last night 😅 keep up the good work can't wait for more my favourites is doggy electrics.
I am so glad that they are normally in so much better places in the USA. Many jurisdictions (cities / states) have requirements that the load center (CU) is located outside on the wall. Otherwise they are in a garage or basement. They are not in a cabinet or under stairs because of access requirements that are required for working around them. 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Absolutely hilarious been a fellow spark I don't laugh that much but Cory you made my stomach ache with the phone call to Dan. Ever thought of been on stage matey. :)
Corey! In Australia we do have consumer units in tight places plus spiders, snakes, bull ants, lizards and crazy ex wifes hidden in there. Or its outside in extremely hot conditions, the units not the crazy ex wife's. I've worked in the UK and its soooooo easy compared to Australia.
Great vid, oh dear Cory hasn’t anybody ever told you never, never, seriously never play pranks on the estimator, I’m looking forward to seeing you in even smaller spaces.BTW was that a Honda E @0.40 nice EV shame about the range.
I would have expected any switchboard placement to be governed by regs that prohibit it being placed in a such a way that the main switch cant be easily reached nor can it be put where access to the board is restricted or impaired at all. For that reason in Australia it's common to have the board in the same box as the point of supply so all services are in one place and access to children being restricted by placing it at a height not accessible by small children. The door can be locked or simply opened by a screwdriver or latch.
It's very interesting to see the differences from one country to another. In France it is forbidden to install an consumer unit (tableau électrique) in places like this. (In France, the Schéma de liaison à la terre is T-T (the houses each have an earth stake), but i notice that you are in is T-N (neutral system in english i guess))
Congratulations on your work. In Portugal it would not be allowed to install the consumer unit in that place. the consumer unit must be easily accessible, but each country has its own rules.
Nice work, instead of joining the swa with t&e like you have on a few of the videos why don't you just take the swa straight through to the board with the double insulation? Saves putting more points of failure on the circuit and also means if water ever found its why into the Wiska box it wouldn't cause any issues

Alot more house are older than new in the UK so its not surprising they are in weird places
well lah dee dah sweeden
I am shocked as well, at least every other episode. Compared to Scandinavia or Germany, electric installations in the UK are 3rd world.
