Just finished watching the whole series … excellent! Whilst here in England I’m not going to work on too many of those engines I can relate it to the Rover V8 ‘s I used to build in the TVR sports cars I used to work on in my garage. My current project is an R32 V6 Vw golf that I’m turbocharging and using nitrous. Your videos are a great source of information and inspiration . Well done Pete !

Never give up Craig! Take your dream and write it down, then it becomes a goal. Put down some action steps to make it happen and it becomes a plan.

I'm with you Craig. I have taken the first step and taken my V8 Falcon (In Australia) 302 off the road and the engine and transmission are out. The engine is at the machine shop, where like Pete says I went through with the machinist what I wanted, could expect, took advice and the game has started. New pistons on their way and let the machining begin. Pete's right, make a goal into a plan after you decide what you want and do it like me, I only get a job done each payday, I'm lucky that the machinist recommended to me doesn't mind that, and he's happy for the engine to reside at his shop until we have done everything and bolted it back together. After that the auto gets a freshen up as well. Haven't decided if I will use factory EFI or get an aftermarket setup from MSD or Haltech. So yeah mate, have a go and go at the pace you can afford.

Very informative video series. Makes a noob like me want to tackle an engine build on my own. You are a very good teacher and you make it seem so easy. Hopefully if I do decide to build a motor, it actually turns over. Lol

after watching this series i wish i had seen it back before i did my first engine rebuild. i may have been able to avoid a couple issues i had during my build if i had. not all the issues mind you but some, i woudl still have a had a couple dozen to "enjoy" working through, lol
Building is fun, problems are fun to solve as well. As long as you catch them before you start it.
my engine's oil pump is geared to the crank so i couldn't 'prime' the system. i ended up cranking the engine over the course of a couple days for about 50 or so rotations and running for about 60 seconds before i fixed the issues with my oil flow. i used two full bottles of assembly lube and three bottles of zinc in my oil when i built it so i hope no damage was done. when i was researching doing my build people told me not to use assembly lube but just use normal oil and that didnt sit right with me. after having to trouble shoot like this im glad i had more in there than just a thin coating of oil...
turned out to be a wrong gasket in my rebuild kit that had a block off where i should have had a hole.

Thanks Pete for the lesson, I am not sure if Australian dyno operators are as flexible with letting the owner having as much input. Nevertheless, when the time comes to using a dyno, I'll no what to look for, and what questions to ask.
Well, you are the customer. They are providing a service and should be allowed to be involved with such an expense
Petes Garage , it can be an Aussie cultural thing, whereby they want to do the lot. Pete my caveat is, this is my assumption about my own people, but I am yet to test it. We have strict worksafe laws and insurance issues which could limit access to any workshop.

This is the kind of engine ETCG should have gone with. Turbo setup is going to be never ending.
It was pretty complex, but much simpler than a turbo.
I have a 98 Mustang GT that my oil pump failed on and trashed the engine. The 427 small block ford is an power plant that I am looking at to replace the 4.6 2v with.

Your valve covers say "427 Cobra." Wasn't the 427 a big block engine? How is it that the valve covers fit on your smallblock 351 Windsor?
351W with a 408 stroker crank bored to 427. They make valve covers for 351 heads
@@PetesGarage A 351W-to-408 stroker kit already includes a .030" over-bore as part of the calculation, i.e., a 4.030" bore (stock bore size is 4") with a 4" stroke (stock stroke is 3.5") = 408.18 cubic inches. To get to 427 cubic inches with a 4" stroke you'd need a 4.120" bore (which would give you 426.61 cubic inches, or 427 rounded up). That's a 0.120" over-bore, which isn't possible with an original equipment 351W block (.060" over-bore is about the most you can do). You'd need a specialized block with siamese cylinders to do that, like this one - performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6010-BOSS351BB - which starts out with a 4.120" bore.
Can't give away all my secrets......besides, I'm going to change the valve covers and air cleaner because EVERY Cobra has them
@@PetesGarage There is no secret that can get you to 427 CID with an OE 351W block and a "408 stroker crank" (crank with a 4" stroke). It isn't possible because you'd need a 4.120" bore diameter, and an OE 351W block doesn't have enough cylinder wall thickness for a 0.120" over-bore; not even close.
These are the possible displacements using an OE 351W block (which has a 4" bore from the factory) and a "408 stroker crank":
4.000" bore = 402.12 CID
4.030" bore = 408.18 CID
4.060" bore = 414.28 CID
Even a .060" over-bore (half the amount of over-bore you'd need to reach 427 CID) is pushing it with an OE 351W block, and isn't recommended unless you have the block sonic checked for sufficient cylinder wall thickness first.
Your dyno sheet says the displacement of your engine is 408 cubic inches, which is accurate if your cylinders have a typical 0.030" over-bore.

How did you learn so much about the technical side of how an engine works? You seem to know so much, how can I acquire the same knowledge?
Working on engines for years and as an engineer in an assembly plant.
Petes Garage sir my car engine has some problem it not running smooth and its has fluctuation in rpms not minor while its in low gear mostly also not produce enough torqe to derive uphils what i do tell me plz i have efi 16 valve engine suzuki make 1000cc

Hi Pete's Garage, that's great the fact you share your knowledge. you're amazing man. wish i could be your helper in your garage. by the way, i have an hyundai tucson 2011, 5 speed manual transmission, not that kind of monster motor you're building lol, my car is jerking on first gear, i mean when i'm at low rmp when i step on the pedal the car jerk like someone was playing with the brake pedal, what could be the reasons, where should i start looking. thanks in avance for your feedback.

How much does it typically cost to dyno run an engine?
Usually around $80 an hour. If the dyno guy is good and there are minimal adjustments you can get on and off the dyno for about $320 in 4 hours.
i couldnt find a dyno around here for an engine stand alone. i have a small leak from my rear main seal now after installing due to the rebuild kit including the wrong sized seal and i didnt realize it while reassembling. they sent a seal for a crank that was machined, not polished. so its about 1/32 all around too small :/
That sucks, dyno testing is such great insurance
yea i wish i could but i was told my engine would damage their dynos. i needed to find a water backed dyno or something like that... i didnt look into it much more after that as i reallly didnt have lots of spare cash either. reason i built it myself was purely economic

Great video! Did you set the engine for 93 octane E10? Here it's common to tune for 98 or 100 octane... Why did you choose "low quality" gas or is the US octane rating not the same we are using in the EU?

Hey Pete I have a rebuilt small block 318 in my truck and my oil pressure is 80 psi at idle on startup and around 70 psi while cruising, then when its warmed up it will be around 25 psi at idle (my idle is around 750 rpm). Do these numbers sound okay? 80 psi sounds like a lot for a small block 318
It does sound like a lot, if you're using 10W30 switch to 5W30

How's it going Pete! I'm trying to turn my first car (2005 Saturn Ion) into a project car road king, a sleeper that dominates any car that decided to go against me. I wanna totally rebuild it. 1. Is it a good idea? I think it'd be pretty cool to take your first car and turn it into a beast, and you still have the sentimental connection with it. 2. What engine would you recommend and parts etc etc. I want to totally rebuild and create a new engine like you did in this series. Taking all the turbo, supercharge, fuel injections, etc into consideration whichever route I wanna go which engine would you recommend to withstand all that power? Thank you Pete -PVT Dicken

That is a huge project for your first car. Garrett is right, it all needs to fit under the hood. Get some experience and then try to upgrade. Those cars are not made to handle high torque or HP
Petes Garage what would you recommend for a good solid all around project car to build to dominate the streets. And is there anything I could do to make the Saturn ion handle all the hp and torque ?

If I’m rebuilding an early 90s 351 Windsor and the factory calls for a .044 for a gap in the spark plugs but I get iridum plugs that are gapped .030 should I gap them to .044 or leave them as is like the box of plugs says?
The gap drives the heat of the spark. Gap to .044
