    I'm 77 years old next month and I'm installing a new mild roller cam, manifold, carb and headers and appropriate heads on my 350 . I've watched your entire series before starting . I'm seeking 380 HP that runs relative smooth quit and reliable. If I can pull this off anybody can . I had installed this engine in my 54 ford f100 a dozen years ago that I drive everyday .Thank you for the free education Pete .
    I cant think of a better series to subscribe to.

      Pete...You know what would be really awesome. some videos on 6/71 & 8/71 Roots Blowers.
      Also, then it would be really cool if you went into proper Cams for Roots style blower engine.
      However, then you would almost be obligated too go into Ignition systems and then EFI & Carburetor.
      I guess I should say. thus would be really awesome if you did do some videos about those areas, because I know there's Millions who are interested in these areas as well.

    You know what bro I love your videos you explain everything . there are way too many " You Tube" videos that are real quick don't explain nothing and if you were to follow what they say on your own ride , you'll end breaking it. Your vids actually help

    aye....carburettors and their setting-up or choice of type to use/purchase, are the most difficult part of whole setup.
    I sincerely hope (although I doubt it) that there are videos out on the tube; which can explain/educate to the same level of expertise as petes' videos do; in explaining the 'holy sacrement' concerning carbs and their setting up in detail.
    the mark of expectation has been chalked very high (even after only watching 14 videos of this series)...and so it should be! by a very large degree, this channel overshadows all of the rest.
    keep up the outstanding work pete!

    Never be sorry to provide formulas and expect people who are interested in building engines to understand and perform "math". Honestly, if you can't do math, you might not want to get into engine building. Please... give the formulas and allow us to do the math. For me, this is one of the funnest parts of all this.. Love your vids and I really do appreciate all of the time and effort you put into producing this media. Nice job Pete. Thanks so much.

    Appreciate what you do. I am building my first engine, a gen v big block Chevy 496 for a truck. Your Channel is one of my resources for information, I am planning to use a self tuning efi system, not sure which one yet...thanks again

    Love your vids man. I am presently building a 1969 351 windsor .30 over roller cam with .50 lift with a 200 cfm flow heads at 10.5/1 compression. The car weighs 3200 pounds with 350 gears and a tko 600 trans. The equation says 614 on the carb. So a 650 mechanical secondaries seems the right choice. Did I track this correctly?

    Pete, I just watched some of your videos. I really appreciate you responding to peoples questions. That tells me you are a good guy. I was an auto mechanic for 22 years. I am currently rebuilding an Oldsmobile 350 engine for my '68 Cutlass and a 383 stroker engine for my '87 Chevy P/U with a 305 which is fuel injected. I may ask you some questions. I have only rebuilt stock engines for FI vehicles. I have been out of the mechanic industry for about 10 years. I'm a little out of touch with the latest technological advances in FI tuning and such but I am trying to catch up. God Bless you and keep up the good work.

    Great video! Very helpful for a young guy like me just getting into engine building. Is there anything I should keep in mind when using a tunnel ram? I'm working on a mildly built street/strip 350 Chevy backed by a 4-speed manual and 4.11 gears. Thanks!

      A tunnel ram shifts the torque curve towards higher RPM. It will run a little crappy at idle

    Hey Pete, I've been watching your videos from the very beginning, and I gotta say I'm blown away. I haven't seen anything this comprehensive anywhere and it makes me think that I am actually capable of building my own engine. I recently bought a 1969 mustang and I want to build a semi-performance 351w for it. I am in college so my budget is obviously rather limited. If I got my hands on a decent machined block, how much would it cost me to build a complete engine if I did it myself that hits around 430 hp?

    hey Pete been watching all your vids and was curious im building a 360 mopar gonna have around 450 hp from motor would a stock 600 cfm edlebrock be good. would it be good if I upgraded the Jets and made it push more fuel?

    Good job Pete ! But What Holley carb for an 1966 GMC 3/4 ton , with a GM 80s NP440 4 spd (overdrive 4th) transmission , a fresh rebuilt 350 , mild RV cam , Edelbrock intake ? Other than manual choke I don't know if I go with vacuum secondaries , 650 cfm's or what . And I Haven't decided on what distributor yet or headers vs stock ram ex manifolds. Any suggestions ?

    I came across an article yrs ago about Holley 4150’s,proform & QFT billet carb parts and it went on to describe mixing and matching carb parts for performance and cam increase.I used to have subscriptions saved and used a lot of articles like a library.back then pc’s were just starting to coming and much of the info you got was from magazines.anyway somehow I lost this article and am looking for help to restrain the info as much money and effort has been put forth and I can use a little help.it’s mostly about Brawler type carburetion 600-800 or 850 and the proform and QFT billet parts had been out a bit but it was really good info and I can get a pc to help worth crap.if you know know what I speak of it would be much appreciated.I was injured and down a number of yrs but am trying to work my way back now. Thank you and others for all the help and info you supply,it’s not wasted

      I completely understand what you are talking about. Unless you plan on spending tons of time on a dyno trying the different configurations, in my opinion, you'd be better off buying a new carb. Some of them are pretty awesome right out of the box.

    Great video and it’s helping me get in the right area. My build is nothing new but my combo seems a little mismatched.
    SBF 331 bottom- 180cc -1.9 /1.6 heads, Slightly aggressive cam, dual plane high rise manifold, 4 speed manual, Bronco on 35s, 4300lbs weight.
    I’m wondering if 600cfm mechanical secondaries are good (confused because the weight says go vacuum secondaries, the manual says go mechanical, but the SBF 302/331 likes RPM, and I have no overdrive anyways, not a daily, not a rock crawler, just a big weekend Trail/cruising toy.
    Thoughts?

    Great information. Thanks. I'm assuming a mechanical fuel pump that delivers 110 gph at 6 pounds is sufficient for my 383 stroker which has a modest 450hp with a 750 Holley double pumper? Automatic trans w/3000-rpm stall.

    Hey Pete, what is your opinion on building an engine slowly, I'm talking over a period of about 2 years. I want to buy parts at about 2000$ at a time, rotating assembly, heads, fuel system, etc. can I install the parts as I get them over time? Or is it best to hold the parts till I have most of what I need, and install them together? Is there any considerations, things to look out for? Thanks DB

      I have done that many times. As long as you keep the parts lubricated and dry it can be done. Cover it with a large bag, not sealed so it can breathe

    That was a great video. Very helpful. Thank you. I have a 1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 with 421. Stock components in engine. I believe the stock Carter carburetor has a CFM of 575. Do you think it will be worth the trouble to bump it up to a 600 or 650? Mostly driven normally but would like to get on it every once in a while

      Bumping up the carb will give you problems, it won't help unless it's jetted properly

    Pete, thank you thank you for doing these well put together videos. I built my engine from the bottom up with your help.
    I'm currently tuning know and I would like to avoid paying the dyno guy to tune my carb. I bought a Holley kit with all kinds of jets, pump discharge nozzles, pump diaphragm, and power valves. Do you have a video on this? can you help?

      Thanks my friend. You can do it by trial and error. It takes a while, but you can change jets and go by performance and exhaust smell. I've done and usually come pretty close. But for $250 the dyno guy will get it right on.

      Petes Garage sir i have changed my car engine assembly so thats its power geting low day by day while driving uphil it has not enough tourq to move up what i do plz tell me one more thing it has flectuation in rpm while driving 2nd gear its rpm needle move from one to 3 and then go down to 1 and it continues

    Great Videos. how much of the carb secondary setup applies to a marine application? I have a Chrysler 440, and it's my favorite part of the boat. Can do a series covering how to set up a 440 for a marine application?

    Wish I would've found you a few years back. Been fighting sootie plugs, and I think my problem has been my carb. Quick fuel race carb 750 for street/strip. Maybe I should go to a 650 double pump, but I still drive to cruise-in's through the summer..

      Regardless of the carb size you still need to jet it to get the right size, rich is causing your soot problem.

    Pete, ive been following your engine building series videos and ive learned a lot. thank you for taking the time to do this for us. I do however have a couple of questions which I hope your able to either make a video about or possible answer if you are able to help.. my scenario--im building a 331 sbf stroker, im shooting for 10:1CR, cylinder heads have not been picked out just yet but I have an idea of what I want, I have 4:10 gears now with a t-5 5 speed trans, 275/40r17 rear tire which I think is 24-25'' tall, cam is not ordered yet because I want to match it with the heads and intake which I learned from your video. I want to carb this motor. my current setup in my car is EFI, ive been looking on summits website and seen that the holley blue pump is in the range that I needed for carb. I realize I need to know a whole lot more info before I can make a decision on carb size but I feel intimidated by this build just because I don't know all the answers I need. I hope this doesn't take too much of your time reading this. Thank you Pete.. I look forward to your next video :)

      +david cabral You have the information needed to pick a cam that will give you the torques range for the tire size and gears. Take the time to tune the carb and you will have a great set up

    when rebuilding an engine how do you set up the ECU or carburetor and spark plugs to both inject and Spark at the right times after disassembling everything and then reassembling them

      If you do not change anything you should not have to. Spark is based on crank position and injection is based on cam postion.

    Hi Pete thanks for this video you seem very knowledgeable. I'm wondering if you can help me. I have a 79 chevy truck that we put a 350 into. It was built by a backyarder to race in his camaro. It has .030 over flat top piston, a 500 lunati cam, camel hump heads and 4 degree valve timing advance. The truck has 2:76 gears and a 700 r4. I know there's a lot going against us here but I'm having a really hard time with it stumbling on take off. I'm running a 650 double pumper carb. Any idea what I could try? Thanks

      Stumbling at take off is a fuel problem, either too rich or lean. It could also be a vacuum problem. Check it at idle to see if it bounces

    my 2300 pinto engine used a used a divided port runner offenhauser, dual port intake four barrel, , when I installed a high lift cam with more duration yvacuum was around 12, I used a four barrel 390 Holly all I had to do was match the power valve and lean out the jets, all I know is there is no such thing as running an after market carb (one size fits all ) with out doing a plug check, Ive seen guys install 750 cfm carbs on street 350,s and they say Holley suck,s yeah right you gotta match the jets, and learn how to read the plugs, a smaller carb has more velocity for better atomization

    Pete when I open up the engine full throttle I get the smell of gasoline come inside the car. Is this a sign of a carb issue? Too many or few cfm. Thanks Steve

    Hey Pete great video again! was i wrong to think that a double pumper is worse on gas for a street driven 383ci sbc, 550 hp, 57 chevy with Tremec 6 spd and 4:10 gears. Started with a QF 780 vac sec, went to a 830 double pumper and it seemed like the gas milage went down drastically? Also how about a video on choosing between say a BBC and SBC for a street car vs a Drag car. talking about the pro and cons would be a really good video for us viewers.

      You can kill MPG with a 1 barrel if you stomp on it....lol. Keep your foot off the gas. I'll work on it

    Does the vacuum reading at max torque occur when you rev u p a motor unloaded? I would think the vacuum reading would be radically different. But I am not sure of that..

      No....it has to be under load in order to be tuned correctly.

    Hi Pete, I just purchased a hot Rod with a 350 chevy with edelbrock performer RPM 6089 heads and a Comp Cam 12-212-2 camshaft. It has been board out 60 thousands but I know nothing else about the lower end. It has a tunnel ram with 2 Edelbrock 600's. It has mechanical secondaries. I know they recommend a stall converter which it does not have. I know I need to check fuel pressure on a hard take off but do you think my carbs are right and how important is it for it to have that stall converter? What size stall converter should it have? It does surge then hesitate sometimes on take off when I really get on it. It's a 31 Ford Coupe on a custom built frame so it weights very little. Thanks much.

      That's a lot of questions. The stall converter is important so it locks up. It's too difficult to say without seeing it

    350 with .20 overbore. Hydraulic roller comp cam grind, 270/274, Lift .474/.474 its as big as possible to still use Vortec heads. Air-gap intake. MSD pro billet HEI distributor. Headers at least 1 5/8 primaries with dual 2.5 to the back. 4L80e auto trans. 3.75:1 gears. I have a quick fuel 750 double pumper but am second guessing if i should have gone with a 650 instead. thoughts?

      Yeah that 750 is a bit big for that cam. You'd have to jet it down

    Pete i need your help. I'm building an olds 455. It has forged flat tops 10 to 1, big valve aluminum heads. Cam specs are 520/542 lift 234-244 duration @50, an open plenum intake and long tubes. It's going in a 68 cutlass with an m20 and a 308 posi. I talked to holley and they pointed me towards a 770 vacuum secondary. Does that sound more than adequate for a street machine or should I step it up a little? Btw long time fan, I've been following this series for a long time and I always find myself re watching them. Thanks- Marty.

      Thank you for watching Marty. The 770 is plenty, you may find yourself jetting down one or two, but it will work.

    Pete, this build series is amazingly informative. I just bought a 1995 mustang gt 5.0 engine. I'm looking to bore it out and make it a 347 stroker with a dual quad carburetor. how much am I looking to spend here for 450 to 500 hp?

    Pete's garage one of the best RUclips channels going on right now I have a question I don't know if you'll be able to answer it but if I'm running a 600 or 650 Edelbrock carburetor on a l98 engine ideally since I have a intank fuel pump what what will be the best intank fuel pump that you run

      Sorry about that what I was trying to ask is I'm running a 600 CFM Edelbrock carburetor what a intank fuel pump 255 LHP be to much even if I am using a fuel pressure regulator. Thank you for answering my first question.

      No, the pressure regulator will keep it from over filling.

    I have the popular Edelbrock 2101 intake, that meant for a Quadrajet?? All I have seen mentioned was a Edelbrock #1406.

      The carb pad on the 2101 is designed for a 4 barrel but I have seen 2 barrel carbs put on those.

    Hello Pete. Great video as always. I think based on your video, a low compression 302 auto with highway gears in a classic mustang used exclusively for Sunday cruising would be happiest with something small like a 450 CFM. Sound right to you?

    I remember when some joker with a stock GTO would throw on a 850 and get worse performance than a quadrajet --
    You sure you what works and makes a good starting point
    I built a Yenko Clone and used a 780 W vacuum secondaries because I didn't have much $$$$, with slicks it bogged a bit off the line even with 456 gears, needed a good 800-8500 DP and single plane, still ran in the 12's like nothing with a crappy tune---

      People think a bigger carb means more HP, but not true unless you can get more air in and out.

    I know this is an old video but I had a question. I'm building a 400ci csb for a truck that weighs about 5000 lbs and it has street gears. But a Manual transmission. Would you recommend vacuum or mechanical secondaries. I'm assuming vacuum because it meets more of the things you had listed for that category. Thanks in advance. I've learned alot just from watching your videos.

      Mechanical is nice because you can adjust it, but if you have enough vacuum it's the way to go

    This is why I'm a boost junky. Any forced induction increases the volumetric efficiency. More HP for your $$. But I also love my Ford 460👍.

      Everyone has a preference. Boost costs and can fry the engine, but it does work well

    How much power do you recommend for my 1986 Monte Carlo SS that weighs 3380lbs, 3,73 gears with 200-4r transmission to get into 12 seconds? I’m wanting you to build me a 350 with carb..the car will be used for road trips and cruising also. Budget is whatever needed for goal.

    i wish i had used your paint on my engine. i used PoR15 engine enamel but its not a 2 part and i sprayed it on after the block was tanked but its discolored in some areas now due to temps and scraped off in a couple places. all in all its not bright any more but rather a dim/flat appearance

      no, its really not.... i used rattle cans a few times in the past but it always peeled off. so i thought hey, this time ima buy a real paint gun, use an air compressor, clean/etch the iron block and buy good paint. so i got por15 thinking no matter what this shit will work... its still on and looks loads better than any rattle can i have ever done but still... not the same as day one. ill see if i can find a pic of day one paint

    Max RPM @ Wheelspin + Torque & HP?
    I see a lot of engines run good at 500 through 3k RPM. But it gets iffy under 1k, and it hasn't seemed to matter what kind of engine.

      That is true. At idle the engine needs to spool up in order to start producing HP.

      When you balance all of the parts you eliminate vibration which steal HP. The vibration will also cause parts to wear faster not to mention shake the hell out of your car. When you buy parts they are balanced, but they must be put together and balanced as a system.

    hi, The engine is a 302 5.0 stock 1995 Mustang GT. Going in a 1991 Ford Ranger, with a Elderbrock RPM air gap intake. What is the ideal carburetor for that setup? Oh, it's a 5speed if that makes any difference. Still don't know how I'm gonna make the clutch work (cable clutch going to hydralic pedal) Any ideas?

      +Dávid Turner That's awesome! If I was just building the engine I could have it done in a couple weeks. Right now there is a little over $16k wrapped up in it. If you want budget HP a crate motor is the best way to go.

      No, a fuel injection engine just has a planum with an air control.

      That is part of the planning process. You build an engine with a HP goal and that leads to a certain amount of air and fuel needed.

    That formula doesn't work for all motors I put a 680 quick fuel on my 71 demon 340 and it was starving for fuel, it likes a 750+ and by that formula I should be running a 600 witch is way too small for that motor

    With all due respect, I cringe every time you refer to "metering rods" in a Holley carburetor which has "jets" not metering rods... I actually like the Holley carbs better because of that particular detail... Again, no disrespect intended but I'm a bit OCD when it comes to details and terminology... That being said, keep the videos coming... I love watching and learning...

    Not trying to be an ass here, but your VE calculations are really only applicable to naturally aspirated applications. Any intention on covering the FI side of things at some point?
