This is my first job tomorrow when I get to the shop. Never done one of these. It was nice to see this so that I will be working first thing tomorrow instead of figuring things out,,,,then working. You saved me some time, thanks!!
Let me know how it worked out for you!
Thomas EXOVCDS with a second guy it was out and the remanned one was in in about an hour. Would have been 2-3 times as long without your help. Time to align it next. Thanks again.
You did this video right and I thank you for it!! Except the loading of the headlamp batteries haha
You Should also add Audi A6 in the title it’s the same. That’s what I was searching for and remembered it was the same.
Audi A4 B5 also... and some others are also similar. Thank you for watching!
This is the only video I could find that detailed the steering column bolt. Thank you so much you are a godsend
Thank you for watching!
@@EXOVCDS Is there a trick to get the steering shaft re attached?
No... but it's sensitive to angle at which you are trying to align things. I think there's also a missing tooth that helps with alignment (if I recall correctly).
That was a great video. Precision detailed views of the target areas. Thank you.
Thank you and thank you for watching & taking the time to comment!
Thank you so much for your help :) You helped me save a lot of money. I followed your guide on how to replace some things and then did it. I forget which one it was but I've replaced the water pump and thermostat on my B6 A4 along with the crank sensor. Now I am about to try to replace the rack on my C5 A6 after watching this video.
Sorry about the late reply... thank you for watching. If you need specific service info, let me know.
Thanks Thomas. This video really helped with getting that rack out. Much appreciated!
Thank you and thank you for watching!
The dancing guy always makes my day :D
+cihuaua MC Hammer is the man... Hammer Time! Can't Touch this! LOL
you show great skill man very impressive
Thank you... but I'n nowhere near the level as a lot of other guys. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, that's what i was thinking while watching the video. Skilled guy right here !
@@EXOVCDS I got a 2004 Audi A4... Garage told me it's steering rack but I don't even believe they checked it... I just bought the car 2 weeks ago I put fluid in it go for a drive when I turn and makes a weird whining noise then going around the block a few times open up the hood and it's all over the headlight by the reservoir and up high right there... Also sounds like it's in their boiling in the reservoir... I would hate to purchase a rack and it's not the rack... And it seems like every garage I go to its full of shit.... Please give me some ideas I'd appreciate it.. and I thank you in advance
@@PeterFeltersnatch852 If oil is all over / around the reservoir, then look for a leak in that area and repair the leak (tighten hose clamps or replace hoses). Buy some power steering fluid... fill the reservoir to the correct level and have someone turn the steering wheel from full left to full right (back & forth). Look for leaks at / around the reservoir and at the steering rack just in case. You can check for fluid behind the steering rack boots (you might have to loosen the clamps a little). If there is no fluid behind the boots, then the rack should be OK. The steering is noisy because the fluid level is low (air in the system will make the pump noisy).
Your videos are awsome. I have fluid coming out the boots and couldn't figure out how to get at the rack seeing as how it is totally enclosed. After watching this video I now see its not a big deal. THANKS!
Good luck... thanks for watching!
Is there a difference between a "personal" account vs a "shop" account on the VW erWin site? As far as the information you get access to.
I don't think so... pricing maybe. Our shop doesn't have a shop account, so I do Erwin myself once a year. For $35 I download 8Gb of pdf files... for me, that's enough info to cover what comes in the door. I do the same for Audi. When we need specific info that I happen to not download (there's more info than one can access / download in one day, I just stick with the main service manuals for all the cars) then I'll get the boss to look for it during the day that we need the info.
All I could think about is me lying on my back trying to do this job on that VR6. I would have to get Steve to crawl under the car while I drank the beer for him. Good vid Thomas!
Supervising a job can be just as stressful as doing the repair... LOL. When the time comes, I'm sure you'll have no issues dropping the subframe for rack removal. Have a good week Terry.
You have a good week too Thomas and don't work too hard!
Thank you I really appreciate this video. This will save me a ton of of money I don’t have (except for the parts). Hope all is well brother 🙏🏼🤘🏼
Thank you for watching!
tomorrow im working on a 2008 s4, its a little less room.... this video is helpful...thanks buddy
+Carlos Diaz Let me know how it went... I haven't done one on an S4.
Today I drove into work and notice a winding noise. It’s very low on power steering fluid, a b5.5 passat. I suspect I will be doing this job in the near future. Thanks for the video.
Sometimes it is just loose hose clamps. Follow the hoses that are attached to the reservoir. Tighten all clamps that you see. If they are crimp clamps, use pliers to squeeze the clamps. Let me know how it goes.
@@EXOVCDS I will definitely try that first Thomas, thank you.
Thanks bro. Gotta tackle the b5 Passat rack replacement. in my garage this week. No I just got to figure out how to get fresh fluid in it. I want all the old stuff out.
Run new fluid through the old rack (if it's not leaking badly) with the return hose disconnected (reservoir fitting plugged). Run / flush till clear fluid comes out, then drain, remove and install new rack.
Great video, had to replace an 03 Audi A4 today and this video helped a ton, thanks!
Thank you for watching! Nice to hear that one of my videos was of help! Happy new year to you & yours!
I like the head light battery change intermission, it gives me time to get a beer
+kauboi Not sure what happened during that change... batteries seemed to have been in the correct location. The headlamp is not yet a year old, but I am already noticing a flicker that is starting when moving the brightness rheostat. Glad to have been able to provide an "escape" for a beer run! LOL
Thank you for posting. Great video. This will help me immensely. Love the hammer time.
+KlitzkeMN Let me know how things go for you when the time comes... he's slowly becoming a hit on my channel!
+KlitzkeMN Hey... send me a private message, I want to confirm your mailing address (want to send you some stickers).
Not for the faint of heart and great work. Exactly why I flush PS system annually not saying it will prevent but cleaner fluid less likely to wear out seals.
TheRebuilt1 Very true... thank you for watching!

Well done Thomas Great video ! Looks like Steve Rob was up all night :-)
Hehe... boy oh boy, keep an eye out on his channel. I'm not allowed to say more.
Sure will !!
I have a knocking from left to right when stationary on my b5.5. I've since changed the front arms (all of them) and it has made driving the car much better. Still knocking side to side so I will be checking these bolts. Just wish I checked it when I changed the battery 😂
Let me know what you find.
Still working in the area I need my rack done
Very helpful video. I always watch your videos. You guys know a lot about Audis.
Thank you foe watching!
Thanks for the great video. Was having trouble finding the infamous third bolt. The car I am working has the VR6, so very little room. Removed the CV axle, but no help. Then removed the transmission mount. Now had a straight path to the bolt using two extension bars on my ratchet. This job is going to be a money loser! In retrospect, I don't see any other way and if I ever do one again, I'll just go ahead and remove both the CV axle and mount.
Correction: V6 engine
Yes... definitely more difficult on the V6 & V8 engines!
FYI... I have only ever done a 1.8T steering rack. The one in the video, might have been my 3rd B5 rack replacement.
thanks for the vid. you make it look so smooth ha. i got the ps rack out off my 2002 passat, now i'm looking for a "new" one. seems like it is going to be a B to get it back in. i got mine out the old fashioned way with cussing and swearing and i did not remove anything from the car to access stuff. thanks again! if you have any suggestions for somebody selling a 2002 passat 4-door sedan 1.8T ZF steering rack for less than $250 i'm all ears. go hammer go!!
+coreymon77 I believe there are some DIY posts on how to overhaul a rack... we used to do it back in the day, but not anymore.
Thnx man!!! Very profesional work!
Thank you for watching!
Try that with a S4 2.7 L twin turbo and automatic trans. What a pain I was looking at my 2007 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0 FSI 6 speed man trans and the rack seems real easy to replace.
Sometimes, changes between generations are of a huge improvement!
Thanks man. love the channel I have learned a lot watching you keep up the good work
Thank you for watching!
Very helpful dude, good video. Can you tell me please if it's possible to change the boots without removing the whole steering rack ? I have to do it on an a6 c5 tomorrow and i know them pretty well but never done this before and i always thought that if i have to do it one day it's gonna be a pain in the a** ! Thanks
Service manual shows removal with rack installed... will still be a pain (clamping the clamp).
The problem is that i don't have the service manual. Anyway knowing that it's possible is already a good point. Thanks.
awesome vid, thanks so much
As always, superb!
You are too kind... thank you for watching!
Ok Thomas, it's clowns, timing belts and steering racks 😝
Wow , if Terry's Jetta needs a rack like this he's going to fly you out to one of them Carolinas he lives in for the weekend, thats a job and a half.
+Steve Rob He's got a different setup that might be considered easier to do by some... to me about the same. I have see & done racks that are way worse.
***** I like racks dont get me wrong but hard racks I stay away from.
+Steve Rob I've got no-one to blame but myself... I make it too easy for you guys!
+Thomas EXOVCDS How much did you charge for this install?
Okay, I must say thank you very much for the vid. Very tight fit. I do have an issue with a hose now. Pressure caused a hose to rupture. Problem is I have no clue where. Thinking its the pressure hose, but its odd because its only spraying towards the trans. Its hard as hell to cross thread the banjo bolts. If you have any idea please let me know.
Faheem Carter Aside from banjo washers / fitting, yes... would be pressure hose. You'll have to look as best you can to see where it's leaking. Worst case, remove the pressure hose so you can inspect it.
NOOooo, lol Thats the hardest one to put back in too. I'll try to search light the break. I did watch your other vid on the subject of replacing the hose. My Audi is a 97 2.8 12v V6. The hose almost goes straight back so the break is facing the wall. It was leaking then just through up emptying my res. So... Thanks for the quick reply and the badly needed assist.
Hey Thomas, I have a 2003 passat v6 manual. I want to rebuild mine and change the seals instead of buying a new one. Im just finishing rebuilding the motor and want to do this rack before it starts leaking, since I already have the motor and subframe and the whole front end out.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF PINION RACK GEAR THESE HAVE, IS IT KOYO OR ZF. DONT KNOW WHICH SEAL KIT TO PURCHASE. THANKS.
With the engine out, you should be able to see which type of rack it is. If not, then remove it for better inspection.
Probably. Phone the dealer and give them your VIN... they might be able to determine from that.
thank you very much for this instructuctionnal video, that helps a lot
Thank you for watching!
what ya dont show are the stock heat shields that block that underside bolt and ps line banjo bolts..
boogers if I missed something, sorry. If the car didn't have it installed, not my fault... can't record what isn't there. Do what you have to do, to remove what you want to remove.
Very helpful, thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Good stuff! Keep it up.
Thank you for watching,!
Hey sir, been a while since i have commented, i need to check these bolts as i think they may be causing my clunking while going over bumps. (I have replaced all of my suspension parts, by the book, except inner TRE's as they didnt seem to clunk) I never recieved a radio code from the previous owner, will removing the battery cause me to lose my radio?
Thanks!
I forget at what year the radio was part of the communication network... in that case, a cross- check is done and the radio comes to life as if nothing happened. Worst case, if it asks for pin, there are websites / ebay services that can get you the pin for a fee. The dealer can also do it... probably a better way to go, but a bit more pricey.
@@EXOVCDS Thank you! I checked all of the bolts and they seem tight. My battery also died over the weekend and i didnt lose my stations! So that was good. Im still baffled by the clunking in my suspension. I have replaced all parts by the book, even installed new subframe bolts, but i hear it when i hit bumps, not when turning. One thought is leading to the strut bushing, I have the orange style do to the later body years, but i have had these both taken apart and retorqued twice. Nothing seems loose and i am completely stumped. The Passat World Forum isnt of much help either? Have you ran into this issue of clunking after doing suspension work on the B5.5?
-Dan
So the cluncking was not there before you worked on the suspension?
hi great video, got a question, my steering rack boots are like almost twisted and oily, (loosing oil in the reservoir) do i have to replace the whole rack or just the boots?
There should not be any fluid behind the boots... the seals in the rack are no good. Replace / rebuild the rack or install a new / rebuilt one.
okey thanks for the quick answer
3:13 8mm hex head... not Allen, sorry.
Great video!
Thank you for watching!
I got a leaking rack tired of spending $20 a week on fluid what gaskets did you mean and where do they go? As well I need to replace the axle bolt as it's a stretch bolt yes? And were those the correct torx wrench sizes? If you remember thank you for the great video will surely help me do this soon
Its Viirn All tools & sizes are listed to the best of my knowledge. I could be wrong about some... a torx bit set should have all the sizes that are required. Same goes for metric wrenches... a set should contain all you need. I don't have time to re-watch all my videos, so I'm not sure about what gaskets I was talking about. Most likely the banjo fitting gaskets / washers. Can you tell me where in the video I referred to gaskets?
Okay thank you and yes the banjo bolts/washers were where you mentioned the gaskets also I didn't ask before but would you know if this would be same procedure on a 01 B5.5 Passat same motor? Thank you for responding so fast
Its Viirn Should be the same... let me know how things went.
Thanks again and will do cheers! ✋️
Thomas EXOVCDS so I attempted the PS rack removal got the tie rods axle and battery out just had to do the shaft disconnect and then do the banjo lines and the mounting bolts but I stripped the torx bolt under dash by accident so now sending to a shop to get it out sigh
Hi,what is the name of that program you used to find where are the third screw? Look verry usefull btw 😂😂😂
Alin Scarlat Service manual pdf... from the VW Erwin website. Link is in the description.
What a nightmare... Have you ever replace a rack on a MK2? If so, does the subframe need to come loose or removed?
No... but the engine & transmission do need to be supported, as the differential / transmission mount is removed and the passenger side engine mount is disconnected. The rack & engine can then be moved / manipulated so that the rack can be removed.
Thomas EXOVCDS
Thank you so much!
well done and much appreciated
Thank you for watching!
What did you do with it? It is necessary to change completely? Thank you.
+Abu-Salih Salamov 20 years ago we used to still overhaul steering racks... now we replace the unit (quicker turn around time for the customer) with no worry about worn components affecting new seals.
Thank you for this!
Thank you for watching!
Hey does this apply to the v6 b5.5 version too?
Should be the same, but less room / access due to V6.
👍what is the name of program you see parts maintanance
@harbinn111
PDF files / documents.
Factory information from VW & Audi... "erWin". Depending on your location, there are different official websites to download from.
In North America, it costs $35 USD for 24hrs of access. You can download as much as you want for as many vehicles as you want.
Different prices when downloading from the European website and other countries.
Morning. So I was told that mine is leaking. I just bought the 05 passat 1.8t and I think I hit a pothole. if I fill up with power steering fluid by the end of the day its empty. There's no short cut around this? All these parts have to be removed? What's the labor cost on something like this? Just want to make sure that I'm not getting jerked
Labor guide lists 3.5 hrs for a 1.8T Sedan with Auto tranny. Follow the leak to the source... it might not be the rack. The older the cars get and the area / climate that you are in, will play a role in how things come apart (rusty bolts / stripped fasteners etc), so in some cases... an "estimate / labour guide recommended time", might not be what the final bill will come to. It's not the shops fault if they run into any problems.
Thomas EXOVCDS thank you
When I replaced my InnerTRs on my a4 there was a little liquid maybe 3/4 of a spoon in the boots at 191500kms. Is that normal? fluid level has been fine for the 1500kms ive put on it since cars purchase.
With age, you will get a bit of leakage as the seals / rack wears.
what power steering oil has to be used for the car? mine's 1997 vw passat 1.8t.
Does it have to be semi-synthetic? thanks
sorry about the late reply! www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Passat/Steering/263/1
It's so much easier if the complete engine and gearbox is out🤣exact same as Audi a4 b5...do you kno of an input shaft and 1st gear for a b5 tdi quattro gearbox?🤔
Sorry, don't have a source.
Took my 98 a4 2.8l to get an alignment and on the way home i lost all my power steering fluid. Car was fine before i gave it to them. They said bad luck. Is there something they could have done to cause this?
I don't know... where is it leaking from?
Center behind motor in line with the tires, im assuming steering rack. I asked them if they turned the steering wheel with the car off because i read that can introduce air in to the system and rupture seals. The response i was given was the guy that did the alignment has been doing it since he's been 12 years old and has never heard of such a thing.
@@dachba213 Odds are that there was already fluid under / behind one of the steering rack boots... when they adjusted the toe, they had to turn the tie rod and may have had to loosen a steering rack boot clamp to allow the rod to turn. The loosening of the clamp broke the seal that the boot had against the rod (sealing the leak)... and fluid is now leaking out.
Leaks don't happen all of a sudden... you can drive fore years with fluid behind the boots and not know about it. Eventually, when there's enough fluid behind the boot, the boot will let loose during a tight turn.
How old is the rack? If still original... it has served well for 22 years.
Thank you for the advice. I dont know the complete history of the car, i have only had it for 2 years. Hasn't given me any real problems so i decided to put some money in to it.(air pump, flex pipe, rotors, brakes, tires, inspection, emissions) got it all fixed up, back on the road, everything was great and i took their advice and a few weeks later i get a 4 wheel alignment and now its a huge paper weight in my driveway. I guess their right, bad luck! Shop wants $1500 to replace steering rack. That's what i paid for the car!
@@dachba213 I know... it's tough. The cost will break even / not be as bad when averaged across the next 8+ years of leak free service. There will be many other things that may need attention as time goes on... if the car is in decent / solid shape, it's worth putting money into it. I own two 30 year old cars... they run better now then they did when I first got them. =)
Is it the same for the b5 a4?
+Jesse Silva Yes, very similar... the Audi A4 B5 is pretty much the same platform as the VW B5 Passat.
regarding this question. Is it then the same for a B5 S4?
what size are the 12 point rack mounting bolts? 10mm, 11mm,13mm
10mm 12 point as indicated in the video?
Can you adjust the rack play in b5s?
There's a preload adjustment screw at the base of the pinion. The service manual has a picture of it.
@@EXOVCDS where can i download it?
@lauris4887
Search youtube for "steering rack preload adjustment".
All steering racks operate the same way, but might look slightly different.
Once you watched a video, look at your steering rack to find the adjustment point.
Great video 😁... Post The remont pls
Installation is in reverse of removal... just like the service manual says. =)
Thank you for watching.
Hi, thanks for ur response. My passat's driver side is right sided, and cannot find the 3rd bolt.. How am i supposed to find the last bolt? is it on the driver side? (right) thanks
I would think that it is similar but reverse... 2 bolts from underneath on the driver side (right) and 1 bolt from the top on the passenger side (left)... as opposed to 2 on the left and 1 on the right for the left hand drive vehicles.
I've removed two from the top in the bonnet (under battery), and trying to get to the last bolt from underneath the car like in ur video. I've removed the right drive axle, but as its right driver side, all stuff looking like transmissions (not sure) is blocking the way to the last bolt.. how am i supposed to reach that.. im so stuck thanks
Not sure, since I only work on left hand drive vehicles. If you can not see the bolt, it might be covered by a heat shield due to the exhaust in that area?
Yeah it is.. do I have to move all the heat shield to reach the bolt?
Hi,I'm working on a 2005 (left hand) passat 4-motion. My 3rd bolt appears to be behind some kind of shield. I can't seem to figure how to get past it. Any advice?
Where have you been Thomas?
Keeping busy... trying to find time to record & edit for RUclips. Thanks for the support!
@@EXOVCDS I changed rack and pinion on my 2003 passat. I couldnt have done it without your video.
You are a blessing. Stay safe.
@@crescentandstarglory Nice to hear that one of my videos was of help to you! You and your family as well!
@@EXOVCDS Thank you very much Thomas.
So, I replaced the rack and pinion and power steering pump on my 2003 1.8t Passat. ZF brand.
Flushed and de-aired the system. But, now, steering is very stiff and has a slight whining noise. What do you think?
@@crescentandstarglory Not sure... give it some time. New parts these days are not made like they used to be. If you still have the old pump (and it's not completely broken) swap it back in to see if there is a difference (easier swap than the rack).
Would the procedure be the same on a B5.5 1.8t Passat?
Yes, I would think it is the same.
Thomas EXOVCDS thanks I'm thinking of replacing mine as I have a slow leak and tired of buying fluid already checked hoses and I'm pretty sure boot is full of fluid
Is this the same procedure for Audi A4 B6, 3.0?
Should be similar... have not had to change one yet.
yeah it's basically identical. Thanks for the vid!
Something like in video can be expected in A6 C5 2.8q?
Laimis Bernotas Yes... similar. Left exhaust pipe needs to be remove for better access.
Thanks
What about the V6 30V Dual exhaust with the exhaust also in the way?
As soon as I get a chance to record one... I'll let you know.
Ok thanks
The rack is in the same location... you just have to work around the exhaust or remove the exhaust (since there is less room with it in place).
Thomas EXOVCDS it's not at all the same it adds a lot of time on v6 it's completely hidden behind a heat shield.
I'm working on mine right now and yeah that heat shield makes it a struggle alright
bwoah i have to do this to my b6 passat and it is 3.2fsi v6 4 motion. do u have any helpful tips?
I haven't replaced one yet on a B6, but I can find some service info for you. I'm still at work, but will get back to you once I am at home later tonight.
Is yours not the electromechanical style steering rack? Lowering the subframe would be the way to replace the rack.
wv passat b5 1.9 66kw 1998.it is the same?
Should be the same / similar.
What are the torque specks for the three bolts for the rack?
Tight, but not too tight, just tight enough to be tight without being too tight.
I'd have to check the service manual.
Thanks!

OBI'JUAN you ever figure out what was the issue? I'm changed CA's and anti sway bar bushings and a weird thump has also developed from the front end.
does this work for an 2004 audi a6 3.0
Jazmine Perez Will be similar but less room... some exhaust parts might need to be removed for better access to steering rack. I have not yet replaced a rack on a 3.0l
The hammer time 😂😂😂😂
Can't touch this!
Thank you
Im doing a power steering line i was trying to figure out how to actually get the power steering line out and you have saved me probably a few bloody knuckles thank you as always
Let me know how things work out for you.
@@EXOVCDS I'll have time in 2 weeks. But you have helped me so many times with my passat before.
Does the power sterring line need gaskets for the 2 banjo bolts? The power steering line that I ordered didn't come with any gaskets so I'm not sure if it needs them. That's honestly what I'm waiting for to do the job.
@@cameronyoung2004 The banjo fittings should have washers on either side. Reuse the old ones if you don't have any new ones. Or take the old ones and have them matched up at a local parts store or Quicky Lube oil change place (they have various size washers). Soft aluminum are best, but copper washers will also do.
Well that job certainly didn't look like a boatload of fun. Looked like a bit of a prick to be honest.. Still doesn't trump that 1.8t beetle turbo job though... 2 references to that video now!
Yeah... that's one I don't want to do again for a while!
Never did a rack on a passat but that deff looks easier than some domestic cars or asian that ive done but all them hand tools 😖 take too long for me lol
Where is your shop located?
Canada.
Thomas EXOVCDS too
Bad I'm in USA Connecticut
If you ever have questions... just ask. I try to answer every question as long as I know the answer.
How much should I expect to pay for this service in a independent shop and also a timing belt I have a 1.8t. thank you
Timing belt is probably around 5.5hrs and steering rack about 3.5hrs.
Depending on shop labour rate ($/hr) and parts... the total $ can be quite different from location to location.
Is it the same for the A6 2001 4B C5 Quattro?
Not sure I would have to check.
