For a lot of us, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the soundtrack of our lives. To me, The Last DJ, MOJO and Hypnotic Eye are the culmination and best of their career. I don't think I have heard one track on the radio from any of these albums and yet they are some of the best emotionally and artistically by this band. So much passion, heart and soul. After seeing this 13 minute video, I now know why this is true for me. I miss this band so much but very thankful I have their music to enjoy.
Totally agree. I'm so thankful I was able to see them several times throughout their career. If there was ever a band that seemed to come up with the perfect part on their respective instrument, it was this band. The grooves were killer and lyrics just magical. I miss this band very much.
I considered the Eagles the greatest American band for years but when they didnt follow up Hell Freezes over with an original album immediately and just became a regurgitating tour band ($$$) for the next decade plus they lost my interest. And when they finally came out with the dumpster fire of Long Road Out of Eden I was done with them. Id been a Petty fan for years but that's when I put Petty and the Heartbreakers past the Eagles in my opinion. And looking back I don't know why it took me that long. Tom Pettys body of work far surpasses the Eagles. I don't get ga-ga over celebrities very often but when the news broke that Tom Petty died that was a truly a sad day. Still listen to him daily 2020.
These guys are among the greatest but sorry, nobody owns the title of "greatest American rock band ever" more than Aerosmith. They have remained all original for a half-century...minus the one record and tour in the early 80s. They remade themselves to fit into the MTV era. They broke ground with the melding of rock and rap with RUN DMC. Sold 150+ million records...almost twice Tom's commercial success. They have remained relevant (as did Tom) through every musical twist and turn of the last 5 decades...and they're still going strong. I will admit their end of career output was nothing close to as strong as Tom's was but they are truly the kings of American rock.
@@aammdj Aerosmith? They should have quit in 1975, after the 3rd album. How about Chuck Berry with Johnnie Johnson on piano? Buddy Holly and the Crickets? Aerosmith tried to be cool. The Heartbreakers were cool. Big difference...
Mr. Thomas Earl Petty, your the man. Natural born entertainer. Better than the beatles. Better than the stones. You were born to bring us joy. Rest In Peace, brother. Hope to see you inheaven. Give me a thumbs if you agree. Calm cool and collected. He is the man.
I am 24 years old and I really got into Tom Petty's music a couple of years ago and over time he became my favorite artist. Such a true music legend and it's the really only the greatest musicians that have the kind of longevity and talent that he had when it comes to making so many hits over the years. The world definitely needs a better taste in music and I hope that people can find an artist that resonates with them like Tom Petty has resonated with me, because he was such a unique talent and should be celebrated as one of the greatest musicians of all-time. May God rest his soul.
As usual, Petty's instinct to let Campbell loose on this record was the right move. Man, Mike is just a RIDICULOUS player. Incidentally, Scott Thurston is a very undervalued member of The Heartbreakers. He can do a little bit of everything but his harp playing really opened up this record.
I’m just now learning about the different members of the band, and I feel bad that this clip is the first I’ve heard of Scott Thurston. It’s been 5 months now and I’ve gone from listening to everyday to listening first thing in the morning. Of course, I’ve loved Tom & really just thought of the “Heartbreakers” as Tom’s band, but Wow! NOW I am always going to think of Mike Campbell as one of the BEST guitarist’s of all times. And Benmont Tench... Can’t think of the Drummer’s name but Stan Lynch also. I LOVE how Tom says he just comes in with a song (or basically a concept) & then let’s it firm as each member contributes! They REALLY ARE SOMETHING ELSE.

Sometimes, peeking behind the curtain can be a dangerous thing. You may see something you wished you hadn't seen, you may feel different about the subject. Not in this case...if it was any more possible to love TP & The HB's, this documentary has done it. What an honor to see true musical genius at work...all of them. This should be required viewing for any fan of music, especially musicians...from beginners to lifers. This is what real talent and real players look and sound like. Guys that could have phoned it in from a successful 30+ year career but the love of music and each other compelled them to work for something bigger than themselves. Not having to chase the next hit but at peace with where they were at in their career and lives. Thank you to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for sharing their music & talent with us.
Petty and band really stepped into the deep end of the pool on this record, which they continued on with HypnoticEye. They’re best stuff imo. RIP Tom,gone, never forgotten.
Excellent album.”MOJO”. Tom Petty is very thoughtful. Like Mike CAMPBELL said, they put out some fucking great music! Peace and Love to the Hearbreaker’s. Sorry for your loss to Steve,, Scotty, Ron, Benmont and Mike. Always in awe of your music. “Great Loss”

I love this album. It's hard to have a favorite Tom Petty album, by tomorrow it will be another one by them. Tom and his band have been so prolific, with so many fine songs. I don't want to call them "hits". That's degrading to Tom and his bands. Tom wasn't about hits, and then just pumped them out one after the other. Love all of these guys forever. It's a treat to hear them talking it out and cracking jokes. Thanks for an extremely well done video.
This documentary is very inspirational, I really think this is a band that young people should really pay attention to. I like Tom Pettys attitude, you can tell he really cares about everything, and he seems very inclusive with the other band members. He seems like a very deep person, good guy.

I remember reading one time how Jeff Beck wouldn’t even ride in the same limo as the band; had his own separate limo, no hanging out ....That’s not THIS band! I LOVE the doc where Tom’s driving a car loaned to him by MTV, he looks like he’s maybe 19 or barely 20, and giving a tour of Gainesville with the guys in the car, no fan belt for AC, and showing the gator farm he used to work on. What a RIOT that one is!
Awesome that Tom put Mike Campbell out front with that 59 Les Paul!! Hes as big an influence on guitarists that play for the song as anyone i know that deserves it...Just an awesome band that still sound as fresh as they did in the beginning.
I've listened to the Heartbreakers since '76. They've always been very good (like in the mid-eighties when lots of seventies rockers "lost their way")...but quite often they've been excellent. And since basically "Wildflowers" ('93), they've done whatever they wanted, not worrying so much about making hits, as Mike Campbell comments. And since then, they've become very probably the best band in the USA. Bar none. When I got back and listen to their 70's and early 80's stuff, which is great, I cant' help but feel that somehow, Petty and the Heartbreakers have actually gotten BETTER with time. Like a fine wine. Thanks for posting this!
The early stuff is magnificent as well it's absolutely timeless. His heart and soul are in everything ❤ Tom did. There is no one else like Tom and the HB's what a talented band ! Keep Rocking Heaven Tom!!

I always love documentaries on musicians and bands that "Focus" on their music. So this is a great video. I wish more upcoming wanna be pop stars would pay attention to films like this. Partially because the attention is on The "Heartbreakers" not "TOM PETTY" Tom has always made mention of how fortunate he feels to have these specific musicians for a band. and this video and of course the album itself shows us all why. thank You.
I am actually the very proud owner of #97 out of 1OOO Produced to the public... it’s a Mint condition 1991 Rickenbacker 66O 12 String Tom Petty Limited Edition.... Ive never really been blown away by any signature guitars, however this is by far my very favorite guitar ... very low action also Rickenbacker set the string spacing as close as they could without the strings vibrating into each other ... giving the effect that the two string pairs begin to feel like one string ... seriously... I could play the 12 string RIC the day I got it, never ever played a 12 in my life, friends in the neighborhood and family Actually can’t believe I’m as decent a player as I have evolved into.... huge Thank You to TOM PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS.... FOR INSPIRING ME TO LOVE VINTAGE GEAR.. LEARNING TO FLY F - C - Am - G (Repeat over an over and over until end). No other chord changes at all not even the choruses... if you don’t have a 12 string use a touch of Chorus to try to achieve that octave overtone Rickenbacker Sound it comes fairly close, close enough to play this song .... chords are easy lyrics are as well and Fun as hell to play once you get into the groove of the strumming pattern... jangly RICKENBACKERS. Tom and Mikes love affair is Rare Rickenbackers.... anyways the guitar is patterned from Mike Campbell’s Rickenbacker that Tom is wearing on DAMN THE TORPEDOES. That particular 12 string belongs to Mike ...
Saw them Sat night (June 5) in Oakland. And they ROCKED just like they always do! Already have downloaded their two preview songs from MOJO (part of the online ticket deal). Can't wait for a week from today when I can download the rest!
Really nice seeing this video, good to see them still making great music, and even greater to see Mike's playing highlighted throughout the whole album
Tom Petty is such a modest composer. Wildflowers album is a wonderful example of his ability to compose with the orcestra the the background. Absolutely love it. It's what sets this band apart from so many, the detail and complexity in the melody. Like Dr. Dre, they 'perfect the beat.' Doesnt get much better than a heart felt Heart Breakers song!
unlike a britney spears record this wonderful snap shot in time will live on. yeah when the pop icons of today are forgotten this tom petty record will continue to age well
refusetoburnout ...you're right..."Petty" is the biography by Zanes...but I think from everything I've read, Tom Petty really had a big part in it's publication, unlike most biographies.
Well, compared to anything about Prince, for example, who held the world at arm's length, that's for sure. Petty really let Zanes hang out at all kinds of things, and gave him hours and hours of one on one interviews over many months. But he only read over the final draft, gave a few comments, and held to his promise that the book was Zane's. The result is good. To me the interviews with Tom's daughter Adria were the most interesting and revealing. Rock on.
@@marimbadearco There was 1 thing he asked Zane to change. It was back from the '80's and was about Bob Dylan....so he did go back on his word once and he explained to Zane why...Zane took it out. TP was friends with Dylan and even though Zane said it was really nothing "bad" or even negative in Zane's opinion, TP didn't in any way want to do anything to tarnish his friendship with Bob Dylan. Their friendship was more important, so Zane took it out without any problems. This info came from an interview with Zane.
Those "live in the studio" recordings = pure greatness. Thanks guys, nobody could be happy with these. The dirty Knobs will be in my town this summer and my associates are buying a block of tickets (and humming at work = can't wait!!).
The heartbreakers, " in the clubhouse" ,it doesn't get any cooler than this video,,.. this is what rock& roll is all about !, tom petty,,. Is the gracious host, & lets his guys shine!
These guys have MOJO and maybe a little voodoo cuz they have put a spell on me. I cannot stop playing these new songs - at work, at play, at home, in the car. And when I heard them at Red Rocks it nirvana. These guys only get better with time. When you think they can't get better they do. No one comes close to em.

So many people feel that way. That's the mark of a true artist and a beautiful soul. The music will live forever.
Always have and always will love this band.
Something good coming always
I always love documentaries on musicians and bands that "Focus" on their music. So this is a great video. I wish more upcoming wanna be pop stars would pay attention to films like this.
Partially because the attention is on The "Heartbreakers" not "TOM PETTY"
Tom has always made mention of how fortunate he feels to have these specific musicians for a band. and this video and of course the album itself shows us all why.
thank You.
This is probably my favourite Tom Petty album. Phenominal start to finish
My daughter and I thought a Tom Petty at the amphitheater in Milwaukee one of his last concert. It was awesome. He is truly a legend.
RIP Tom! I've got my vinyl "Damn The Torpedoes" out and spinning. Still sounds just as great 38 years later.
I love this band, can't wait for hypnotic eye
Amazing stuff...!
TP and HB is definitely the BEST road music!!
GENIUS!!!!!
this stuff just keeps getting better.
love the purity.
Wow! What a find that feeds my TP & THB deep dive. I will be watching this many times. Love it!
Been a fan from the beginning. Every single album has been great. R.I.P. Tom
Oh this song Help Me. I wish it had made it on the Mojo album. I love it so much.
Rest in peace, Tom :)
This is fantastic! I love behind the scenes / behind the music insight, especially of some of the most talented musicians in the world!
Damn straight he is like a fine wine
unlike a britney spears record this wonderful snap shot in time will live on.
yeah when the pop icons of today are forgotten this tom petty record will continue to age well
OH to have the talent, commitment, longevity & friendship this band has. Some guys are jus lucky that way......
mojo was the best album that came out that year i think they should have won album of the year they got screwed
Too awesome, can't get enough of Tom and the Heartbreakers.
I just finished his autobiography - a great read for all fans of the band. What an amazing life and adventures they have had.
actually biography, by Zanes, right?
refusetoburnout ...you're right..."Petty" is the biography by Zanes...but I think from everything I've read, Tom Petty really had a big part in it's publication, unlike most biographies.
Rock on.
Definitely a good read.

There was 1 thing he asked Zane to change.
It was back from the '80's and was about Bob Dylan....so he did go back on his word once and he explained to Zane why...Zane took it out. TP was friends with Dylan and even though Zane said it was really nothing
"bad" or even negative in Zane's opinion, TP
didn't in any way want to do anything to tarnish his friendship with Bob Dylan. Their
friendship was more important, so Zane took it out without any problems.
Is the gracious host, & lets his guys shine!
already missing you Sir Tom ... may the Light within you burn ever Brighter in Eternity, thank you for sharing your gift with us all
These guys have MOJO and maybe a little voodoo cuz they have put a spell on me. I cannot stop playing these new songs - at work, at play, at home, in the car. And when I heard them at Red Rocks it nirvana. These guys only get better with time. When you think they can't get better they do. No one comes close to em.
tom,and band kept us real miss y'all man sad tonight
"more like a polaroid than a painting"....love it. Wonderful album
