One of the most underrated bad asses of all time
I own two TP albums. Casual fan. Went to a show in '07. Knew every song. Mind blown. Grew up on FM in the late 70's into the 80's. If you have a chance to see him, GO. It is a guitar extravaganza. A fellow pair of guitar geeks called out the guitar changes (every song). The Broadcaster was there. 3 hours of great hit songs and deep cuts. MC's playing brings tears to my eyes. So tasteful.
"how the the songs were crafted", hit the nail on the head. single most important aspect for any original rock band. the smartest tech i've ever seen.
I'm so happy to see Steve still touring with Mike. They both did a GREAT job the other night 8-30-22
Mike has always been one of my favorite guitarists from way back. Always was in love with his sound. Always will be. People don't seem to bring up his name enough, as far as I'm concerned. He and Tom are perfect for each other.
I agree! Such great licks and solos, too. He doesn't over do it and always seems to come in with the perfect lead lines. He's actually a really good guy to learn from for those exact reasons.
Just think of how many songs Mike Campbell has to know and play? One of the best of the Rig Rundowns.
Thanks for This. Awesome Video. Saw Bob Dylan at Lang Park outdoor football stadium Brisbane Australia in 1984(?). Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were Dylans Back-up Band. So The Heartbreakers played a 2 hour lead up set, then backed up Dylan for another 3 hours or more ...... So Non-Stop for 5 Hours ..... During a Cyclone(Hurricane) of Flooding Rain. That night Mike Campbell became my favorite Guitarist, His Lead break on Refugee went for 15 minutes. True Professionals.
THE BEST RIG RUN DOWN YET. And Oh My God!!! He absolutely lives a charmed life. He rules.
that was such a likable guitar tech!
Runnin' Down a Rig..
😂Best comment yet
lol
Ha!! Perfect
How clever.
Working on a mystery…
Played some Petty today with a band, and looked up Mike Campbell’s tone after fumbling through different pedals, a VOXAC30, and a few classic Gibson’s and Fender’s. I’ll be sure to mortgage my house, get a loan from the bank, and sleep in my car to have all that cool stuff to get the sound of The Heartbreakers….. In all seriousness, this guy is The Man for gear and care of all of it. Really enjoyed the cruise through axes and amps. Long Live Tom Petty. Looking forward to see what Mike does with Fleetwood Mac.
Just need a fender tweed.
Who in the hell would ever dislike this? These guys are legends, amazing songwriters STILL and Mike is so freaking underrated as a guitar player.
Greetings from the future. Tom petty is dead...
Not underrated by us.
Mike Campbell is just the bull's balls, man. Great guitars, great amps, doesn't get crazy with FX, and tone tone TONE.
Hey Carlo,
Thanks for the suggestions, but festival enviroments are impossible to do Rig Rundowns because the quick changeover between sets. But both QOTSA and NIN are hitting the road this fall so we'll try our hardest to bring those videos to you!
We're all gonna miss Tom Petty...one of the best men in the music business...Hopefully Mike Campbell and the rest of "The Heartbreakers" will continue on with Petty's legacy...
I wish they would. He doesn’t need to be in the Fleetwood Mac drama.
@@jimferris9447 Ya I don't get why they don't just tour as the heartbreakers with Mike singing
Nice to see the Excelsior (Fender) amp in his rig. I ♡ my Excelsior.
Great interview, Jason asks the right questions and the techs respect that
Can't help but love these rigs that are thoughtfully put together after years of experience in the search for the best tone possible. these guys are at the top , no, I should say pinnacle of their game, and playing style. Decades of experience and touring & playing condensed into one brief burst of knowledge and style......and it doesn't cost anything at all......
Finally! A coherent, and beautifully put comment!
@@TheMusicalElitist this
Coolest tech we've met yet IMHO! Thanks for all the great rig rundowns you guys do. Love 'em!
Unbelievably cool. Beautiful guitars, pedals and awesome amps. Very informative.
This guy has convinced me to stop cleaning my maple neck. Not only does it look cool but I always liked the feel and now I don't feel crazy for liking it. Thanks Mike!
In honor of Mike/Tom, I will never clean the neck of my Schechter.
In tribute to Tom Petty and Mike Campbell I will never clean my EVH Striped Series Frankenstein
When I dream about the Lottery win, this is pretty much how it goes.
wildcatter63 you could spend 10s of thousands on a small handful of guitars!
I’ve never been more fascinated by something I don’t have a clue about.
I always liked tom petty. After he died, I've seen all the interviews and WOW I love tom petty and the heartbreakers. They are awesome dudes.
Now that's a real guitar collection. Got me salivating.
best rig run down and I've seen them all.
We are all SOO appreciative for the hard work y'all have been putting in so that we can all get a closer look at these players, their rigs, and all of the work and love that goes into their sounds. Any chance we might be able to see a Philip Sayce rig rundown anytime?
Once again, thanks so much for all the vids!
I am going to have to go out and just say this, All the rig rundowns and premier guitar videos I watched Mike Cambell has the coolest setup. Great guitars amps and pedals, I have a very similar taste and collection minus a lot of the vintage guitars but still..
Just noticed the A string spacing on the first tele. Wide space between the A and D strings due to bending bridge screws for better intonation. My tele has the same thing.
"Little Ricky"....The Rickenbacker Mandolin WITH a whammy Bar! That pretty much explains everything about how Mike Campbell Rolls! Steve Winstead has lived the life many of us dreamt about back in those days we played in our own garage bands. The Roadies are absolutely The Guts of a Band! Cheers From Ohio
so many beautiful guitars
Custom made Rickenbacker. Only 1 in tbe world. Plays it as a backup loll
R.I.P. Tom
That man is the definition of a roadie. Complete badass
This is precisely what I want Mike Campbell's guitar man to look like .. right down to the small sweat stains on the front of his shirt.
Agree completely.
No badass at all just A professional! Not a school girl😊Check the tech of the Edge! No badass at all!
Yep he’s likely an awesome player too
but it would've been better if it was Mike Campbell talking about the gear, this video was boring as heck cos of this stupid techie
I don't care for any of premier guitars interviewers but it's worth it just to see what the bigshots are runnin with, that mandolin is fantastic
How have i not seen this yet?!
I want my roadie to be as awesome as Steve here, and Bugs. They live up to the tough job they are needed for. Congrats, Steve for your dedication! Bravo clap clap! I have come to see how absolutely invaluable a good good roadie is! Total testament to that! Thanks for all the great tunes you helped do :)
Edit...I have to watch this a few times its so packed!!!
That was really cool. What a collection and those are just the ones he tours with!
Awesome. I love factory relic’d guitars. Fantastic look and feel.
Fascinating. The specific interests for each song. I never clean my neck either. And clean my fingers well before use. Thanks for the video.
This was one of my favourites so far! Keep up the great work !
Nice rundown , really enjoyed that one.
This is great! What an amazing rig!
Great set list !
Allen Woody owned something like 500+ instruments. There's a GREAT article about him by Fly Guitars, where they interview Warren Haynes about Woody. The first page has a pic of Woody sitting in from of a couple hundred guitars, basses, mandolins, and double necks. He looks like he was almost in heaven. 🙏❤️🎸
We miss you, Woody!
#AllmanBrothersBand #Brother4Life #AllenWoody #AllmanBrothers #GovtMule #WarrenHaynes
I believe the guitar he introduced as a 175 is actually a 2 pickup ES-125TD, based on depth and P90's.
Incredible collection! Wow
I loved this one. To the point: "Here's the goods, pay attention to your tone."
i hated this one, i find it very boring when it's not the artist showing the gear
@@KeeperOfPoops I know what you mean, but I also think of an artist's guitar tech as their gear guru/sidekick, and really dig it when they take the time to do these and share their knowledge.
What a dreamy setup
Man o man
Talk about a great collection of guitars!!!
Mike is the glue of the heartbreakers
Thanks Jason , enjoyed that . Steve seems like a great guy . Mike Campbell
is a tone master .
I totally agree. Those Neutrik "Quiet Jacks" are tons better than the ones from D'addario with the button. My D'addario cable ALWAYS mutes itself when I don't want it to. Always.
The unfortunate part is my D'addario cable has the lowest capacity of all of my cables, including the Mogami. So I still use it often. I may switch the jack with a Neutrik jack to make it a little better.
Ty premier, great show!
love these guitars
l love how, with all the money and endorsement potential that these A-listers have, it comes down to putting Sharpie marks on tape and keeping the dials in place with...more tape! "It's all about the tone." Thanks for a great Rig Rundown.
In my dreams i would love to have a guitar for each song🎸👍
I really enjoy the music.please keep up the good work.your a good artist.
That was awesome! Thank you, PG!
would be cool to be in a pawn shop buying back my toaster and run into Mike Campbell...I'd ask him if he likes toast
betpow red dwarf?
Who doesn't like toast?
By toaster you mean one of those Kemper things? 🤣😉
This interview was done at Jiffy Lube live amphitheater Bristow VA
6:55 "Oh, gosh... i should have known it...a... oh no!" LOL Loved it
CampbellToe Indeed! Has to happen! Loving what that company is doing these days!
very nice guy! Cool review of Mike's rig. Thanks!
I have both of the Line 6 pedals. They’re pretty cool.
Small low watt tube amps are king. Mike is the tone king! 🇺🇸🗽🦅🇺🇸🎸
Awesome! Fingers crossed!
Cool collection, really cool.
I always wanted to see TOM'S rig and I don't think it ever got shown.
Well done, thanks!
Jason, great interview!
Honestly all of those guitars look bloody awesome, some of my favourites have gotta be the Tenesseean and the Rickenbachers. I'm a massive Beatles fan and George Harrison is one of my absolute favourite guitarists and one of my biggest influences, and if I could I'd love to own either of them (Or even both of them, I've played them and they sound awesome)
Just Angus Young uses an SG, Malcolm mostly used a Gretsch jet firebird.
Great guitar collection. I am surprised there are not more teles on the road. Pedal board very straight forward though.
Nice rundown, thanks
Rip Tom Your gone too soon but never forgotten
This guys racing through those guitars like they're nothing. Fastest rig rundown ever
Love that Gretch Clipper Toru Notano? Does he work for Norman's? He's the only one I've seen use those string benders. Must be a beeyatch to modify.
so many nice guitars, mike campbell is awesome
Starts at 14:00, WORD! Hope younger players are listening.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreaks enough said classic rock
Cool guy. Thats was good. I love it when the guitar tech is really into it.
Another fantastic rundown, thanks guys!
Is there any chance you.could interview Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro when they come over to the states? There isnt really much on the web regarding his tone. Thanks!
Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown would be Sick!
Plus it would raise awareness to get Pinky and Graham's 59 LP back from whoever stole them... oh and The SG Jr & Gold top too.
I'd love to get a rundown of Their boards...
Its funny how he's all rough around the edges, but is wearing a Rolex watch.
RIP Tom Petty
I had no idea a collection like this exists... So cool he loves Ebay....
Mike's the only guy who not only tells his wife about gear on eBay, but then has her go and bid for him!
Chad Van Oostendorp not the only ! : )
I have to hide my purchases from my wife. I'm such a terrible liar and I'm not slick in the least, so she usually finds the new axe before I'm ready to "reveal" it.
+Daniel Simon 3 yjbv.m .
Why on earth would anyone hide things and lie like that? If those things happen then you're with the wrong woman.
Jammy Git thanks for your advice, but I didn't say I lied about it. And we've been happily married for more than 20 years.
What a super cool tech
I would so love to be in a band with Mike. I love how he's all heart, no purity, no pompous bullshit. He doesn't care if his vintage guitars or amps get fucked up if he's playing 'em, and he makes em scream.
Wow. If Fender ever reissues the Pawn shop series (and for some reason, I think they will), I hope they do a tweed version. That thing is gorgeous.
all right, this is gonna be interesting to watch
So. To recap:
1. 64-65 SG
strings - 10 thru 52 - D'adario lt top hvy btm. XL140's
2. Gretch'61 86 Clipper (refinished) - Open G for 'I won't back down.'
3. '54 tele (actually a '59) he obviously got the two teles mixed up. 54 teles, didn't have a rosewood neck. Fender started to use rosewood in '56. guy who sold the Tele to Mike says it is a late '59.
4. '59 (actually a '54) tele w/ b bender* - tuned for 'american girl'.
5. Princeton amp. post 1964. so it's 65,66,or 67. 12 watts 10" speaker.
6. Fender Deluxe wide panel. 15watts through an alnico 12" speaker.
7. Rick 370-360? MapleGlo - (it's a 360 in Fire Glo) mid-60s - used on 'free falling'.
8. Rick '67 375? nope. '67 360/12 double-bound also fireglo.
9. backup tele w/B-bender*. Newer model. maple neck.
10. Rick mandolin with a whammy bar.
11. '59 Falcon stereo - backup for the tennessean
12. '62 Gretch Tennessean
13. Gibson Firebird VII (it's a III, not a 7) - used for 'runnin down a dream'
14. Line-6 wireless modules with cable-emulator.
15. '65 sherwood forest green strat. (that's actually a very rare '64 strat color, charcoal frost) - used for 'you wreck me'. tuned up 1/2 step.
16. Custom black Rick 6-string, 2 pickup.
17. les paul. tuned down a full step for 'I should've known it.'
18. Tom's sitar. tune up to F for 'don't come around here'
19. Gibson Dove acoustic.
20. '54 Barney Kessel
21. Gibson 175 (actually a 50's ES-225 or 125 with original factory spec P-90s) - backup for the clipper. open G.
22. Stratotone.
23. Signature Duesenberg w/ active electronics.
24. Duesenberg Mike Campbell model.
25. wacky guitar w/ drums and distortion - used on learning to fly.
26. les paul re-issue.
27. Pedal Board:
> digitech whammy II > Tuner > Green Meany (toggle switch for Excelsior) >
> Line6 Delay > Camel Toe Overdrive (1st Version) >
> line6 leslie/tremelo/flange/chorus > RC-20 Loop Station > Cry-Baby >
28. Amps n stuff
> Fender 62 re-issue Reverb Unit (notice how they jerry-rigged a piece of plywood to stop the sound from bleeding onto the stage. wonder why?)
> Little Labs Splitter (1 in - 3 out + DI out )
> Fender Vibrotone (Leslie) >
> Fender Tweed Excelsior (13w 15" speaker) for solos
> '66ish Princeton >
> '55 Tweed Deluxe (Tone: 9, Vol: 2.5)
* B-Bender - a guitar accessory that enables a player to mechanically bend the B-string up a whole step. The resulting tone sounds like a pedal steel guitar and contributes a "country" feeling.
** The 'Campbel Toe' idea didn't happen.
Oh HELL YES!!! Mike is unbelievable. Have you heard the live version of 'Runnin down a Dream'? there's a video out there, i'll send it to ya if you can't find it, a video of Live footage of Tom Petty and the muthafuckin Heartbreakers, coming back onstage for an encore, and they do 'Runnin down a Dream' and Mike has a 5 minute solo before they end it!!!!
I just found and bought an old Line6 MM4 Modulator just like Mike's! The one with chorus, tremelo, leslie, flange.
No Tele has a rosewood neck, you mean fingerboard
Actually, carfreak824, you're wrong:
reverb.com/p/fender-rosewood-telecaster-natural-1971?gclid=Cj0KCQiAg4jSBRCsARIsAB9ooauBlQ_qXJTWPBmBXDW4673Q4wDFmGRw-Mfrca2rPEKILW8iRc2Q-doaAjepEALw_wcB&hfid=106686
carfreak824 I have a Tele with a rosewood neck. It's pretty amazing.
He's a really cool guitar tech, seems like a nice guy who does his job well.
Really interesting how Mike uses those small Tweed Deluxe and Princeton amps and Tom used largely bigger amps like his red Marshall, the Vibro King and the Bassman.
Tom used AC30's a lot too
Just so the record is set straight, that first Rickenbacker that they pick up is a standard post-1964 360/12 in FIREGLO (mid-60s vintage I'm sure). The other one is a 360/12 double-bound, I couldn't tell you the year, also in fireglo. A 370/12 in Mapleglo would have 3 pickups and be a blonde color. There are not, to my knowledge, any 375 12-strings, as the "5" on the end would mean it has a whammy bar.
I played through a Fender Excelsior and thought it sounded great so I bought it. It looks like someone else likes it too. Those things are dirt cheap, if you have a chance to get one, grab it.
I love hearing Tom on the microphone and speaker. Testing 1-2-3 That made this video for me. Love TOM But then again this guy Steve has to and does know his shit.
Wow so many guitars. I would lover to see Tom';s becuz I know he plays a different one every song. I love Tom Petty &the Heartbreakers
Denise Mason There is videos of where they are playinfg in the studios and they have entire walls of guitars. WOW Amazing.
So it comes out of the fender and how can it as there's only one input and that's occupied by the cable
I happened to pick up one of those Excelsior amps on sale at GC for $200. I figured, a 6V6 amp for 200? What the hell? That thing sounds great. Then I see Campbell uses one. Feelin' pretty smug about now ;-)
How does (or did 😔) he hear those little amps on a big stage? I may have missed it. In ears? Floor Monitors?
