This was a great video
Pausing at the bottom helps as well, good to strengthen your tendons
Dude i was literally searching about dip form today, thanks a lot for the video
It's so subtle, like some deadlift form cues. I gotta explore these. Thank you for the content!
Been had this problem, switched dips out for a unilateral high to low fly (more stability than the traditional bilateral version). With this advice though, I’ll see how I can re-include heavy dips into my program. Thanks Austin 😃
this dip method works very well for me. i recommend you to watch Micha Schulz (if you havent been watching him yet) on yt for more weighted calisthenics tips. he helped me out a lot i this regard.
but please be carefull how you wrap the belt. try to put it on your hip height. if not you could injure youre disc and spine as in my case with heavy loading.
Did it work?
I’m getting over Costo as we speak. It’s been 2 months or so, but finally improving.
What did you do to fix it?
Yes bro, this is how I’ve been doing dips and I love them. I was confused when you said weighted dips were bad, and I’m thinking man they’re such a good exercise and probably the one that increased my bench the most. Glad to see you back on the weighted dips and putting people on to game as always.💯
Dislocated my sternum two years ago. Haven’t been able to do a dips since. Weighted dips was one of my favourite exercises
How did that happen to you?
im only 17 and ive been having sternum pain from dips for a while. i shook it off because it didn't feel too "severe" but after not listening to my body, ive had to pay for it. i wanted to do pull ups yesterday but felt discomfort around my chest and ribs and back. i had also previously did dips a week ago because i wanted to get back into the exercise after a month. i will definitely try this form out after ive fully healed, maybe a few weeks, but if it continues i will just continue my push up journey. also a coincidence that i look into how to fix sternum pain and austin posts this video.
Bro I'm 17 too and a game changer for me was externally rotating your arm basically tucking your elbows throughout the whole movement, it will alleviate pain for the most part. I heard a pop in my sternum from bad form. After about 2 weeks I recovered and now I'm back to doing 3 plates. Street lifting form + tucking your elbows will alleviate most pain. And you can lift heavier. Just keep your chest tight and depress and tuck as hard as possible
Also another tip to recover faster is actually not avoiding pressing movements, doing incline bench and stuff. Once your recovered try my method. It works
@@davidmacamay7099 I’ll definitely try both your method and Austin’s method. But to be safe, I will be taking a break from dips for a while. I’ll definitely keep this comment saved until I know for sure that I can do dips without any pain. Thanks, bro. 😎
Chest pain keeping you big as hell
Awesome tips, Austin 😀
chest pain? Bruh I get elbow paim
@@thelamboman4085 wrong, sonnygirl that is golfers elbow. Do one girlie curl and leaves.
@@ericB3444 🤣
@@thelamboman4085 but seriously cure golfers elbow simply by using a natural grip for push-ups and all floor work. Use push-up handles to gain a neutral grip.

good thing about this technique is, that u get more control over your shoulders.
I had sternum pain once cause I collapsed into shoulder protraction with weight on me. So engaging chest helps alot :)

Bro doin the barseagle style
yea that’s a good observation was just about to comment that. ngl i always thought ian’s form looked weird but then i figured it had to be intentional cuz he strong af and knowledgeable and it turns out there’s a method to the madness
I was thinking the same thing
Yep about time i would say
@@Zevyq Ian form is horrible. He is bending at the hips while his lower body and weights are barely moving. He uses that form to deceive his audiance .
@@sukmikehok1384 You try dipping 100kg then, loser.
I've been practicing this technique for a year. I was making quick progress in terms of lifitng heavy ass weight. That is until I hit 90 lbs at 130 lbs bodyweight for 2x2. I was fine for a couple of days, but a then I felt my triceps were on fire. So I took a long break from that. Present day, I am still having trouble going past 45 lbs without extreme DOMs. But I am working with 35 lbs at 135 lbs bodyweight, which I am okay with. 😅
All this is doing its reducing the range of motion even if your elbows deem to bend your upper body uts literally just folding which reduces pec stretch and activation which its great for competition but not the best for hypertrophy ecen tho its still safer than the open chest version
I can't even do weighted without street lifting form, overloading with competition technique will give you more gains than doing bodyweight with more stretch
Correct form is straight body not bent. Also this form puts a lot of stress on your shoulders.
@@sukmikehok1384 No it doesn't. My shoulders have never felt better and my sternum pain is gone. Stop with these arbitrary "form" standards.
@@davidmacamay7099 You obviously know nothing about training. This is not arbitrary "form" this is the correct form. You can lean a little bit forward but not bend at the hips. Also they don't allow bending in street competition.
@@sukmikehok1384 I've literally completed and rounded my upper back on my dips. As long as you weight moves, and you hit 90 degrees, it counts. The record holder for dips quite literally advises people who compete to crunch their spine. You know nothing about streetlifting. You are trying to instill arbitrary standards that aren't even enforced or even listed in the rule book in the only sport that has dips. Stop it.
Hollow body vs no hollow body. Hollow body is when your scapula stays in a protracted position while pressing where as no hollow body your scapula is in a retracted position. Aka calisthenics form dips vs bodybuilding form dips.
Your turning your body into a press..excellent technique
How many sit-up do I do a day Austin ? 100 is good ? Jimmy in nyc
Hey, so this is kind of random, but I just watched your day in the life of a rotc cadet and I was wondering if now all these years later if that experience was worth it to you?
... weighted dips sometimes gives me wrist or elbow pain... so I stopped and just do weighted ring dips, which for some reason, don't give me the same pain as straight bar.
Austin Dunham your phenomenal. Amazing physique. Great video.
Let's gooo!!!
Do your dips only one set.... go all out in one go.... reach technical failure... do your reps perfect full ROM with decent eccentric phase... you don't need to go super slow... your reps will eventually get slower in the last reps which cause real growth.... do other exercises for other sets... again each one set... For calisthenics, variations are much more important than doing the same exercises...
Can you do a video on healthy sleeping and eating habits
Dips are just 🔥 all around
thats what i did too... good shit man
Guys is dumbbell bench press 50kg as 63kg good or cuz my friends hating on me
25 kg in each hand is amazing brother, how long do you train for. Your friends are just some losers who joke about you
50kg on each arm?

When I started getting sternum pain from dips, I started doing straight bar dips which was good vertical push exercise alternative 👌🏽
Good motivation video
Nice video bro!
Yeah, streetlifting form >>> than any other bodybuilding form
I did this before he made this video and i was goin to make a tutorial about it but guess he beat me up to it😅
I started to do this way casue of my own thoughts now i know is it better really
Is it bad to do dips if you’re somewhat overweight? I’m somewhat new to exercise and now I’m 227 pounds mostly fat, the most I’m able to do now is 7.
I would be surprised if you can do dips but you definitely need some sort of strength for dips since ur overweight just do a chest press machines flat, Incline machine and once you feel comfortable with ur BW you can incorporate dips
@@Bigbiceps301 I started off doing that last September, I started off doing dumbbell bench press, now that I think about it I might be able to do it because of my triceps
I don't think so, there's a big fella at my gym who occasionally comes with his gf, he looks almost 300 but was able to do 8-10 dips each set. His gf looks more athletic tho.
Although mostly big the guy said when he was younger he use to do sports but let himself go over the years.
That said if he can do it, anyone who is determined can do it too. Good luck brother man 👍🏾
@@Khahlil-i1mgive it a shot but with caution. your joints will not be that strong so just be wary of any pain
So if I do it the "wrong" way, but stick to bodyweight dips, will I get sternum pain?
Nah but focus on going straight up and down if your gonna have your chest open and vulnerable
just be safe and use good form
Did you quit calisthenics skills
Great content as usual. The background music is a bit too loud.
So now, it’s :
Pull-ups = back
Pushups = chest
Dips = triceps
Dips is more chest than anything.
@@harisjaved994 Depends on how you do it, I used to do it for my chest, but I completely changed my technique and grip. Now it's primarly a tricep exercise for me. Barely feel anything in the chest.
I think ur just emphasizing more on the triceps with that form, so ur chest takes less of a load which is why u don't get chest pains anymore.
Exactly, pretty much. Most calisthenics athlets who compete use the tricep dominant form too
Nope. Your chest and shoulders will burn. If youre lucky, youll get sore lats too.
exatly, you work your chest but not as much as on the stretch pec position, if u want to grow chest, its not as efficient of a movement
@@foreignM bro really said dips aren't an efficient movement for pec development. How to tell me you've never dipped heavy without telling me you've never dipped heavy.. lmao
Nah u didn't get it
Chest gets even more activated with this form that's why u can lift heavier
U think u can dip heavier focusing more on triceps??
For sure nah u feel better and stronger in that position cuz ur pecs get even more activated
Bro said he self diagnosed himself
Good morning sherlock
What about the ring dips variation

The original way ain't bad form, though.. if you get pain from doing it weighted, then I'd suggest that you're using too much weight
Poor dip form keeping you big as hell
Dips gives me shoulders and elbows pain
How about not doing dips with a million pounds hooked to your waist might help prevent injury lol
So you stopped a year ago. But they began doing them around a year ago.
