This is the best way to make an 'honourable mentions' list!
I'm definitely keeping my copy of Standard Deviation so thanks for that. The second part of Sattouf's book is definitely worth reading and I'm so eager for the third. And I realise I NEED to read The Madwoman Upstairs - it sounds like my perfect book. I still feel so conflicted about O'Neill's novel but I'll be really curious to read more of her books.
Lionel Shriver's novella The Standing Chandelier would get an honourable mention from me - I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did and she says some really interesting things in it about our instinct to comment upon/form an opinion on/judge a film/book/art as soon as we experience it.
I'm hoping The Gustav Sontata might make your top books of the year! And Winter. Looking forward to it. :)

What a delightfully eclectic list! I haven’t read any of them but I unexpectedly loved Heather O’Neill’s debut novel Lullabies for Little Criminals so am very keen to try The Lonely Heart’s Hotel. 😀

I adored Hag-Seed! It had so much more in it than I was expecting and I found myself thinking about it long after I finished it. Also, The Lonely Hearts Hotel wasn't one of my favorites. I can't even remember what I rated it, but it wasn't a 5 star read for me. However, there were some lines that have stayed with me for months. I even wrote several of them down because I resonated with them so much. So, I agree that it was a very striking read!

My guesses for your favourite books of 2017 include Lincoln in the Bardo, and Ali Smith’s Autumn / Winter!

I think I need to read Mara Wilson's book! I was a huge Matilda fan as a little girl. Great video

Can I join the Brotherhood of Trash Brethren? It just seems like a calling.
It was great to hear you honorable mentions as w got an extra video through that and I' always up for an extra from you, Jen.
    My guesses:
Middlemarch. Winter. A Room of One's Own. Lincoln in the Bardo. The Lesser Bohemians. The Essex Serpent.

My friend got me Mara Wilson's book for my birthday, but I kind of forgot it was on my shelf (whoops!) - but now I'll have to pick it up sometime soon! And your reaction to The Madwoman Upstairs sounds kind of like my reaction to Jane Steele this year - not necessarily the best book of the year, but still a really fun and satisfying read. Really enjoying your end of year videos - can't wait to see which books make your top favorites :)

The Madwoman Upstairs sounds great! It will be going on my TBR.
Thank you for doing this type of video.
Again I really appreciate that you have different tastes in books than I do, because I love being able to pull from your reading to branch out my own. 😊

I've had Hagseed on my radar since it was announced, but I've never quite been compelled to buy it (mostly because it's always been quite expensive) - hopefully I'll get to it next year!

After reading The Tempest I've been of a mind to give Atwood's Hag-Seed a try. Saw there were a lot of nonplussed reactions out there but was holding out to hear a more positive take. Going to have a look at the full review
