    I'm so glad you decided not to cut down your list. This was such a delight to watch. I ended up only picking 5 books for my own favourites list this year, but after watching yours, I kind of wish I had had been more liberal. It's great to celebrate so many fantastic books & authors. All Systems Red had such a fantastic main character. It really was a lot of fun to read that one!

      In past years I've been a lot tougher when cutting down my list - but it just didn't seem necessary this year. I'm kinda trying to lighten up on myself with these things. But if only 5 seemed the best to talk about - that's OK too!

    I'm reading Children of Time right now and I definitely echo the sentiment, "I never thought I'd care so much about spiders." hahaha

      I know, right?! The first few incarnations of Portia were my favorite, though I had a soft spot for any of the spiders that were inventors.

      I legitimately had a super sad moment when space explorer Fabian talked to Kern. I was just like..WHY IS ALL OF THIS AFFECTING MY EMOTIONS SO MUCH haha

    Just gonna add half of these to my wishlist ☺️
    Your summary of Six Wakes makes so much more sense to me than other ones and it sounds far more interesting so thanks for that.

    EmbassyTown has been on my list for awhile. Hopefully I'll be able to get to it sometime. And I still need to continue with The Broken Earth series! Ahh.
    Amatka also sounds interesting because of the setting and atmosphere. This is the first time I'd heard of it though.
    Sounds like you've had another great reading year. I haven't commented as much as I used to but your videos are always a joy to watch. 😊

    I've read four of the books and got 5 on my tbr list. I was also rooting for the spiders. I met the author at a recent convention, I asked him so you keep pet spiders, he said no, got the ideas from watching nature documentary. China mountain zang was a complete surprise , I wasn't expecting it to be so great. Happy New year.

      I've always wanted to know if Tchaikovsky has a thing for insects and spiders, because it seems a lot of his books feature them. I am a little surprised that he doesn't have at least a tarantula at home, haha :-)

    Great list, thanks for sharing. In memory of your 2017 reading year, I'll try to read Orbital Cloud in '18 =) Keep staying amazing in 2018 Rachel.

    I can't believe I missed that you read that my friend David's book on conglangs!!! Glad it made the list. He's so intelligent and good at creating languages. I don't know if you've watched his youtube videos about linguistics, but I highly recommend them! :)

      You know him?! I'd found his book before, but after I watched him on some of the Worldcon panels that were livestreamed, I went straight out and got it from the library. It was so great! I love his sense of humor.

    Great video Rachel! You had a wonderful reading year. I realized I bought at least three of these and still haven't read them yet. I have to get on those! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! may 2018 be even greater :) My favourite fiction of the year was The Collector by John Fowler, Sci-fi probably Central Station by Tidhar, and Nonfiction it was Lore...but probably because of all the audiobooks and podcasts that built up to it.

    • @Kalanadi
      @Kalanadi  6 лет назад +1

      I must try The Collector. It was such a huge hit on Booktube and everyone I know who's read it loved it too! I'm so glad you loved Central Station too. I simply can't describe what it was about it that I loved so much, but I basically got ASMR tingles when I was reading it.

    • @InfiniteText
      @InfiniteText 6 лет назад

      the first half (of the collector) is certainly better than the second, but the second half eases the ....intensiveness....I first listened to Central Station on audio when I had a fever and I remember it as a fever dream so it somehow made more sense that way. I had to properly read it for a review and I was like....woah.

    Great list with some that definitely are going on my tbr. Picked up China Mountain Zhang and Children of Time because of your recommendations last year and as expected they were fantastic. Hope 2018 is an even better reading year for you.

    I'm so happy you had such a great reading year. Let's hope for just an amazing reading year in 2018 :D
    I felt like I had a great year as well with about 20 5 star reads as well.

    I gave Embassytown to my niece who's doing her linguistics phd @ hopkins. As an audiobook, which seems appropriate. And thanks for some promising recommendations. Post cataract surgery reading has become difficult, so most new books are consumed as audiobooks which do, at , least, force me to not skim.

    I want to read more science fiction this year, so I'll be checking back on this video to get ideas. The three that stood out to me were The Invention of Nature (I actually have this one on my kindle already!), New York 2140 (I love the premise of this one), and All Systems Red because it sounds like a fun read :D

    • @Kalanadi

      I bet you will love The Invention of Nature! It strikes me as similar to some of the non-fiction/biographies you've really liked.

    Well this was a pleasant channel to discover while trying to find nine princes in amber for a friend. Thanks for sharing I was just looking for some new audiobook suggestions. I don't suppose by any chance you deal with audiobooks as well on this channel or is this purely paper? Either way, thank you and now i get to flip thru your good reads and find some other suggestions. Cheers and happy new year!

      Hello! I do listen to audiobooks, but they are scattered here and there in my wrap ups.

    I cannot comment on most of the books (planning to read Raven Stratagem, Seven Surrenders, Stone Sky and Children of Time this year). But Embassytown and Name of the Rose would be on my top list any year. For Name of the Rose one question, is there any Latin text in it? I read the German trantaltion in which the Latin was only translated in the appendix. But I saw an English edition in which the Latin was gone and just translated. I wonder if it is true for all english editions.
    If you are interested in a fictionalized account of Humboldt (and Gauss) I can recommend Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann. It was a huge bestseller in Germany a few years ago. I read it just recently.

    • @Kalanadi
      @Kalanadi  6 лет назад

      Yes, I noticed that the Name of the Rose edition I read (which wasn't the Vintage one) had lots of Latin with no translations of it at all. Thank you for recommending Measuring the World! I would love to check that out.

    I haven't done a top ten either as I couldn't narrow it down any more. I knew EmbassyTown would be on this list for the linguistics aspect. I was able to predict an awful lot of the books on this list actually. I go by how enthusiastic you are when talking about it in previous videos :)
    Instead of adding all the unread books to goodreads I'll just bookmark this video itself, simpler plus it has the advantage of hearing your enthusiasm for them again.

    And the struggle to read in English, or some other language you know, because some books are never going to be translated in your language. Profit above all :/ the struggle is real!
    But this aside I have so many books to look into ♥ thanks for not narrowing the list down!
